Gears of War: E-Day Best Class Tier List

While there aren’t that many Gear classes to choose from, all of them have distinct identities and fulfill different roles in the squad. I wrote this Gears of War: E-Day Best Class Tier List to help you better understand which classes are currently in-demand as well as their overall contribution to any particular Horde Siege match.

Gears of War: E-Day Best Class Tier List Quick Overview

  • All four classes in Gears of War: E-Day are fairly well-balanced, with no outliers that skew the game in any particular way.
  • Medic is arguably the most useful and demanded class in the game, while Breacher is probably going to be the most popular one.
  • Assault is a generalist class that is not particularly impressive in any field, but can be solid in basically any situation.
  • Marksman is probably the most demanding class, but it can be incredibly powerful in the right hands.

Gears of War: E-Day — All Classes Ranked

First of all, I’ll preface this by saying that the gap between the tiers isn’t really significant. There are no weak classes in E-Day — they’re all decently balanced. It’s just that some require a lot more finesse in execution than others, and that can be a dealbreaker. Essentially, any class can be S-tier in the right hands, but for some the requirements are lower.

Having said that, here’s the class tier list based on my experience with the game so far.

Medic

It’s always difficult to design a support class that players actually want to play, but E-Day devs understood their assignment perfectly. Here, Medic’s kit incentivizes you to pick it not out of sheer obligation, but because there’s a lot of fun to be had.

Let’s start with what makes Medic unique: Stim Vaporizer allows you to create a healing area that also revives downed Gears no matter which squad they’re from. While incredibly useful and powerful (which is balanced by a rather long cooldown), that’s mostly it — aside from that, you are just as good a combatant as any other Gear in the game. There aren’t any drawbacks to being a Medic, and you are actually expected to contribute to decimating enemy hordes almost as much as the rest of your squad.

In fact, you might even be impressively good at it, because you are the first to get access to the Gut-Puncher, which is definitely among the strongest weapons in the game when it comes to dealing with multiple enemies. Admittedly, using it efficiently is a separate skill that you’ll have to acquire, but the potential is certainly there.

As far as classes go, Medic feels like the one that requires the most situational awareness from its players. It can also be a bit stressful, because people will absolutely expect you to revive them immediately, every time, all the time. Their mistakes become your mistakes, because players hate being cut off from the gameplay, and when they know that you are a person responsible for keeping them on their feet, you can guess who they will focus their frustration on.

So, what makes Medic an S-tier class? I’d say it’s the fact that I don’t feel 100% comfortable playing without one in my squad. Can you technically do it? Yes, sure, but at some point you will probably wish you had him available. Medic simplifies the most dire situations without sacrificing any utility or damage output, which makes it a very good class, even if it requires some skill to truly shine.

Breacher

Breacher is the type of guy who just runs straight into the horde and somehow manages to get out bloodied, covered in guts, but otherwise just fine. If you want that close-range (or straight-up melee) action, then you will stick with Breacher simply because no other class brings anything quite like that to the table.

The great thing about Breacher is that despite being so heavily committal by nature, this class is somehow the least reliant on the team — it’s the team that has to rely on you and your ability to hold off hordes and secure some space for the rest of the squad to do their work.

If you want to just log on to a Blitz for 20 minutes, do your thing, and move on with your day, it is a perfect fit. Obviously, communication is generally important in multiplayer, but you can kind of wing it solo as Breacher and no one will bat an eye unless you start completely screwing up everyone’s gameplay.

Adrenaline Injector is truly a gift that you will appreciate more than anything. Find yourself in a pickle? Just slam it, heal to full, get more damage as well as damage reduction, and continue blasting like nothing happened. It fits the class fantasy perfectly, and it’s also just incredibly good in general, since it allows you to fix your own mistakes on the spot. It’s not a panacea, but it’s the second best thing, and you will learn to rely on it a lot — maybe even to an unhealthy degree, making other classes feel too fragile.

In terms of damage, you have many great close-range options particularly suited for dealing with multiple enemies. While the game allows you to experiment a bit with hybrid builds, I’d say that for now the best approach for every class is to just rely on the best parts of their kit. In your case, it’s all about proximity and survivability.

So, why isn’t Breacher an S-tier class? Well, it’s mostly because of this egocentric playstyle that the class encourages. As a Breacher, your main contribution to the team is only defined by your actions and choices as a player. You cannot provide useful tools and you cannot boost anyone else’s performance, so you are only as useful to the team as good you are at being a Breacher — and learning might take some time.

That said, I think that a few weeks from now Breacher will be the default class for most players simply because of how aggressive, distinct, and rewarding this playstyle is.

B-Tier Gears of War: E-Day Classes

Assault

Assault is a generalist class that is mostly suited for mid-range engagements. Its unique ability — Sonic Disruptor — stuns Drones and disrupts other enemies in a cone, giving your team some time to deal with the issue or regroup.

Now, you see this class in B-tier, so you might be wondering how it ended up here. But the truth is, there is nothing wrong with Assault per se — it’s just that its generalist nature makes it feel like it shouldn’t be your first choice (even if this impression isn’t completely fair). I can imagine an effective squad consisting of a mandatory Medic followed by two Breachers and a Marksman (or two Marksmen and one Breacher), but a squad with zero Breachers, Marksmen, or Medics feels a bit unbalanced.

Once again: I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Assault numbers-wise — you can absolutely be an effective Gear, or even a straight out MVP if you know what you’re doing. But you will also never fully be the best possible vanguard, or the best possible DPS character, since you are a bit capped by your class.

In Assault’s defense, you absolutely are a second-best option if anyone else goes down. Your Breacher won’t do what your Marksman is supposed to, and vice versa, but you can fill the blanks just fine.

Also, I am fairly certain that while Assault has a lower ceiling compared to other classes, he also has a much higher floor when it comes to general performance. A Marksman that sucks at hitting targets, a Medic that doesn’t get where they need to be on time, and a Breacher that doesn’t know their limits — all of them are far worse than a generally inexperienced Assault player. Unlike those, you will do just fine in most scenarios, and that alone is very valuable in a game with quite a wide skill gap.

Marksman

Marksman is the long-range DPS class, especially well-suited for dealing with the most threatening enemies in the game.

It is also the information class, with its unique ability, Pulse Drone, revealing and marking all enemies in a large area. Use it with Smoke Grenades, and you can turn a fair combat into a shooting range.

It is also a positioning class that requires staying safe while still hitting your targets at a steady pace.

You probably see the main issue here: you have to be very good at basically all aspects of the game to be an impactful Marksman. Hitting your shots is great, but you need to be aware of where you are relative to the rest of your squad and constantly adjust your positioning.

You have to rely on your vanguard’s competency as well, because you generally really don’t want to get involved in melee. You also have (arguably) the least useful ability that only serves as a setup for other tools in your kit, so you have to be very smart about it. Finally, you need to do all of that work consistently across multiple matches.

So, can your Marksman perform at an S-tier? Absolutely — some of them might even deserve a separate S+ tier, actually. However, most of your Marksmen will be way below that, and that’s okay.

Out of all the classes in the game, Marksman is probably the one that rewards learning and improving the most, and if you’re interested in becoming better at the game, you should pick it over anything else. But if you simply want to have fun, other classes might be a better, far less stressful choice.

F.A.Q.

What is the best class in Gears of War: E-Day?

Medic is probably the most important class in the game due to its ability to revive fallen allies, which will prove useful in almost any match. However, Assault, Breacher, and Marksman can all be very important and useful, so there’s no reason to discard them.

What is the worst class in Gears of War: E-Day?

There is no such thing as a bad class in E-Day — each class has a well-defined weakness. Marksman can be very difficult to execute on a high skill level. Something similar can be said about Medic, although to a lesser degree. Assault struggles with the opposite issue of not having a huge overall potential. Finally, Breacher is by far the most egotistical class that offers little to the team in terms of utility.

Which class is the best for starters in Gears of War: E-Day?

Assault is definitely the best choice if you want to have a good time while also contributing to the cause without having much game knowledge. However, you can pick any class and learn its basics rather quickly, so don’t be afraid to experiment during your first couple of games.

Which class is the best for skilled players in Gears of War: E-Day?

Marksman is a very demanding class that will reward you greatly if you master it. It also deals the most damage as long as you keep hitting your targets consistently, offering a very satisfying gameplay loop.
