WoW Forever Paladin Changes

I would say that Paladin is the class that has gotten the biggest changes. No wonder the devs showcased this class as the example of class overhaul in general. All 3 specs have been changed. Let’s get through all the changes one by one.

Paladin retains three talent trees with seven rows. Traditional 11, 21, and 31-point milestones are still there. Forever also introduces another milestone talent at 16 points in every tree.

Several passive improvement talents disappear because their effects become baseline. Blessing of Kings is one example. This gives the devs more space for talents that noticeably change gameplay.

Forsaken Paladins in WoW Forever

Forsaken Paladins are playable in WoW Forever. They are one of six new race-class combinations. The others are Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, and Troll Warlock. Blizzard has also said more combinations can arrive later.

I don’t know why, but undead pally seems to get all the hype. But to me, this combination doesn’t make any sense. However, it fits directly into Forever's timeline. The game takes place after Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom, which includes the first Forsaken Paladin, and before Molten Core.

Forsaken also receive a heavily revised racial toolkit:

Forsaken Racial

WoW Forever Effect

Will of the Forsaken

Removes Charm, Fear, and Sleep instead of granting the old immunity window.

Cannibalize

Restores Mana alongside Health.

Underwater Breathing

Greatly increases underwater breathing time.

Touch of the Grave

Attacks and spells can drain Health from enemies.

Cannibalize is especially relevant to Paladin because it now restores Mana. The team of devs specifically called this out during its Forsaken racial showcase. Touch of the Grave also gives Forsaken extra damage and self-sustain.

There’s also the iconic Paladin mount questline, which is also available to the Forsaken race and gives them their own unique mount with level 40 and level 60 variants.

This means the Forsaken Paladin addition is more than cosmetic. Their racial kit directly interacts with a mana-using hybrid class.

There are so many more changes to go through, but I’d like to keep this section nice and short, so here are the rest of the changes crammed into a list:

  • Holy Strike returns: This ability originally appeared in WoW's 2004 beta. Blizzard removed it before launch. In Forever, every Paladin learns it at level 6. It is an instant, weapon-based Holy attack with a 12-second cooldown. All three trees modify it differently. Holy lowers its cooldown. Protection turns it into mitigation. Retribution increases its damage and uses it to maintain Judgements.
  • Judgement no longer consumes Seals: Paladins no longer need to reapply their active Seal after every Judgement. This removes repetitive Seal maintenance while keeping the mechanic intact. It is especially important for Protection, where Judgement doubles as a taunt.
  • Seal of Fury gives Protection a real taunt: This new tanking Seal adds Holy damage to melee attacks. Attacking with a shield also creates small absorbs. Judging Seal of Fury taunts the target for four seconds. Judgement reaches 10 yards, compared with five-yard Warrior and Druid taunts shown by Blizzard.
  • Consecration becomes baseline: Every Paladin gets access to Consecration without investing into Holy. Its stronger damage only affects the first four enemies entering the area. Additional targets receive much less damage. This keeps Protection useful for multi-target tanking without enabling unlimited AoE pulls. It may also weaken traditional Paladin AoE farming.
  • Holy gets more healing variety: Improved Holy Strike lowers Holy Strike's cooldown. Voice of Truth provides temporary Silence and Interrupt immunity. Reverence makes Spirit contribute to Mana regeneration while casting. Infusion of Light lets Holy Shock and Flash of Light criticals shorten the next Holy Light. Holy Shock also moves from 31 to 21 talent points and gets a 10-second cooldown. Consecrated Ground supports offensive Holy builds. Light's Vigil adds setup-based party healing through Holy Shock. It can also be triggered offensively for extra Holy damage. Holy still remains primarily a strong single-target healer.
  • Protection becomes a complete tank: Improved Seal of Fury restores Mana when Seal of Fury's absorb breaks. Its Mana return increases against higher-level enemies. Shield Specialization restores Mana through blocks. Swift Judgment can reset a failed Judgement for another taunt attempt. Templar's Bulwark grants a large absorb and interacts with Forbearance. Reckoning can now trigger from blocks. Iron Creed makes Holy Strike temporarily reduce incoming damage. Holy Shield remains in the tree. Righteous Fury also appears to have some old talent bonuses built into its baseline effect.
  • Retribution gets stronger melee and hybrid options: Vindication now reduces enemy Attack Power instead of Strength and Agility. Sacred Arbiter increases Holy Strike damage and refreshes active Judgements. This lets one Retribution Paladin help maintain several Paladin debuffs. Champion of the Light converts Intellect into Spell Damage and Healing, supporting Forever's new hybrid gear. Instrument of the Law lowers threat and improves Hammer of Wrath, according to the BlizzCon demo.
  • Seal Twisting returns through Twist of Light: Twist of Light replaces traditional TBC-style timing with an Echo mechanic. Swapping from Seal of Command to Seal of Righteousness, for example, creates an Echo of the replaced Seal. The next melee attack applies that effect. Esfand's demo testing showed no normal TBC-style Seal overlap without the talent. Players who dislike twisting can skip Twist of Light and reach Holy Shock instead. Combined with Champion of the Light, this creates a supported Shockadin-style Retribution build.
  • Illumination now refunds only 50% of the base mana cost on crits - down from 100% in Classic. Holy Paladin mana sustain is tighter than it looks

All of this combined kind of makes Paladin a brand new class, at least to me. But do they make the class better or worse?

Paladin Pros and Cons in WoW Forever

I’ve written pros and cons for the Paladin class a few times now, for different versions of WoW; now it’s time for the WoW Forever version.

Pros

Cons

Can tank, heal, or deal melee DPS

Still lacks a traditional interrupt

Protection finally has a reliable taunt

No general-purpose slow

Excellent defensive utility

Limited ranged damage

Powerful single-target healing

Group healing requires setup

Strong against Undead and Demons

Mana management still matters

Several Retribution playstyles

Final tuning remains unknown

Forsaken opens Paladin to Horde

Hybrid builds may require unusual gear

Strong Classic class identity

AoE tanking is intentionally restricted

Despite all the cons I am still thrilled to try out the class and possible main it when the game releases. Paladin does lack a traditional interrupt and generic slow. Its ranged toolkit also remains limited. But against Undead and Demons, however, Exorcism, Holy Wrath, and Turn Undead preserve a powerful class niche.

How to Play Paladin in WoW Forever

Paladin gameplay still revolves around Mana, Seals, Judgments, Blessings, Auras, and powerful utility.

The biggest change is that every role is now more pronounced in a way. I mean the specs are now more different from each other.

Specialization

Role

General Playstyle

Holy

Healer

Single-target healing with planned party recovery

Protection

Tank

Block-based tanking with controlled AoE threat

Retribution

Melee DPS

Weapon attacks, Seals, Judgements, and Holy damage

Also, Blessings now last 1 hour, which is a massive quality-of-life win that removes one of Classic Paladin's most tedious chores.

How to Play Holy Paladin

Holy is still the healer. Flash of Light handles faster and cheaper recovery. Holy Light covers larger healing needs. Infusion of Light connects those spells with Holy Shock. Critical heals encourage switching between several buttons. Light's Vigil should be prepared before predictable party-wide damage. Its interaction with Holy Shock then provides burst group recovery. Holy still cannot spam group healing like several other healers. Setup remains part of its design. The tree also supports offensive Holy gameplay through Consecrated Ground and Holy Shock.

How to Play Protection Paladin

Protection starts with Seal of Fury. Melee attacks deal extra Holy damage and create small absorbs. Improved Seal of Fury can turn those absorbs into Mana sustain. Judgement becomes the main taunt while the tanking Seal is active.

For groups, Consecration establishes threat. Its strongest component only applies to four enemies. Blocking gains extra value through Shield Specialization. Holy Strike becomes a defensive tool with Iron Creed. Skilled Protection players can time it around incoming damage. Protection therefore looks much more complete than Vanilla Paladin without abandoning Classic's slower threat model.

How to Play Retribution Paladin

Retribution currently has two obvious build directions. The first centers around Twist of Light. Damaging Seals are swapped to create Echoes for upcoming melee swings. The second is a hybrid build involving Holy Shock and Champion of the Light. Both directions rely heavily on Holy Strike. Sacred Arbiter also allows Retribution to maintain Judgements for other Paladins.

Blizzard's stated goal is to make every talent tree a meaningful dungeon and raid option. Actual Retribution performance needs beta testing.

Best Paladin Race in WoW Forever (WIP)

The revealed Paladin race options are Human, Dwarf, and Forsaken.

Race

Notable Strengths

Forsaken

It’s hard to say if the Forsaken will be meta compared to the other two choices. I’ll update this section once I have played more.

Paladin Stat Priority in WoW Forever (WIP)

Right now, there isn’t much known about stat priority. Having the Vanilla (or classic) stat priority is good enough of a starting point, but I’m going to withhold from making any definitive lists here as well. The main reason is that WoW Forever changes several fundamental stats:

  • Melee, ranged, and spell Hit become one stat.
  • Melee, ranged, and spell Critical Strike are unified.
  • Weapon Skill remains but has been rebalanced.
  • New itemization can reduce enemy dodge and parry.
  • Healing gear also provides offensive Spell Damage.
  • Hybrid gear receives significantly more support.

Best Paladin Builds in WoW Forever (WIP)

At the moment of writing this, all we have to work with are the online talent calculators, and since Paladins have had these massive changes, I wouldn’t want to just copy/paste Classic builds in here. Please bear with me as I’ll add some great builds for each spec a bit later.

Paladin Leveling Guide in WoW Forever

There’s a lot that’s changed in leveling, but not necessarily for Paladins specifically.

In broad terms, Forever places heavy emphasis on the level 1-60 journey. The devs are adding quests, dungeons, items, profession recipes, and entire leveling regions.

Paladin should also feel more active from very early levels. Holy Strike unlocks at level 6. This gives Paladin an active melee attack early in the leveling journey. Consecration becomes a basic ability instead of requiring a Holy talent investment.

Retribution would be my first choice for solo leveling. Two-handed damage and offensive talents fit open-world questing well.

Protection should be way better for dungeon leveling than Vanilla Protection. Seal of Fury provides a real taunt, while blocking helps with extra Mana sustain.

Holy is probably good for group-focused leveling. Forever's Legacy System also affects alternate-character progression. This is important to keep in mind. Legacy Points can unlock perks for leveling, professions, resources, and class convenience.

Paladin Best-in-Slot Gear in WoW Forever (WIP)

Once again, this is just too early to make any prediticitons right now, simply because it has been revealed that all loot in all instances (old dungeons and raids) have been reviewed and potentially changed in terms of stats or items. And that’s not counting the new dungeons and raids. So, for now, I’m leaving this section empty for future updates.

Best Paladin Rotations in WoW Forever

I wouldn’t call these the most optimized rotations, but these are the rotations that players have used during BlizzCon demo access. So, you can treat them as something like a preview.

Holy Paladin Rotation

Holy uses a healing priority rather than a fixed rotation.

  1. Use Flash of Light for quick and efficient recovery.
  2. Use Holy Light for larger damage events.
  3. Use Holy Shock when immediate healing is required.
  4. React to Infusion of Light when it changes the next cast.
  5. Prepare Light's Vigil before party-wide damage.
  6. Trigger Light's Vigil with Holy Shock when needed.

Spell ranks and downranking efficiency need beta testing.

Protection Paladin Rotation

Protection's preliminary priority looks like this:

  1. Keep Righteous Fury active.
  2. Maintain Seal of Fury.
  3. Use Judgement when a taunt is required.
  4. Place Consecration for multi-target threat.
  5. Use Holy Strike regularly.
  6. Time Holy Strike around incoming damage with Iron Creed.
  7. Maintain Holy Shield when talented.
  8. Use Swift Judgment when a vital taunt fails.

The exact threat priority requires testing.

Retribution Paladin Rotation

Retribution depends heavily on the chosen build.

A Twist of Light setup should roughly work like this:

  1. Maintain the appropriate damaging Seal.
  2. Use Judgement without losing the Seal.
  3. Use Holy Strike consistently.
  4. Swap Seal of Command and Seal of Righteousness to create Echoes.
  5. Consume each Echo with the next melee attack.
  6. Maintain Judgements through Sacred Arbiter.
  7. Use Hammer of Wrath during execute range.

Shockadin hybrids instead emphasize Holy Shock and spell scaling.

Best Paladin Professions in WoW Forever (WIP)

We know that the game contains more than 600 new profession recipes. Many existing recipes are also being redesigned. Camping makes professions even more relevant.

Different professions can place campsite objects that provide temporary buffs. Blacksmiths can provide a Strength-focused effect. Other professions offer different stats or utilities.

Blacksmithing is the obvious choice for Paladin. Coupled with Mining just like in Classic, this should be the best choice for now. I’ll update this section if we find a better combo.

Best Paladin Consumables in WoW Forever (WIP)

Almost all crafted food provides a stat bonus alongside a small leveling XP bonus. This increases the importance of Cooking throughout the 1-60 journey. I’ll add a list of the best consumables to use once we have the names for them.
