Base Work Changes in Palworld 1.0

In short, base-building is now more complex and fun. Here’s the biggest change: Work Suitability is no longer capped like it was before. Before 1.0, getting a high-level worker was pretty quick, and you couldn’t progress from there much. Now the ceiling is much higher, and that creates new possibilities for long-term planning of your base. Now you have to look at the Pals at a different angle. Early on, it’s better to have jack-of-all-trades workers who can do multiple jobs at the base. The further you go, the more important it becomes to have workers with narrow specialization. The main Palworld 1.0 base changes that I want to highlight:

  • Work Suitability now scales up to Level 10
  • Condensing is easier than before
  • Ranking up a Pal can increase its work levels
  • Applied Technique books are easier to find
  • Some Pals now boost the work level of other base Pals
  • Ranch output and base production were adjusted
  • More ore is available in the open world, which makes mining base locations easier to find

The last point is a huge deal, actually. No more hours of looking for an ideal place to set up your ore camp. If you see a good ore cluster while exploring, there’s a decent chance it can become a proper mining base.

Best Base Pals for Every Job in Palworld 1.0

Before I show you the best base pals for every job, I gotta warn you. This table isn’t based on perfect mathematical calculations or min-maxing. Palworld 1.0 is just out, which means I gotta do more testing for the most optimized workers. Obviously, this list will keep changing as players test new Pals and combinations of them. Also, this list obviously uses a lot of job names from the game, so if you’re unsure what they mean, refer to this article. Finally, Don’t forget that the Applied technique books are much easier to find now, which unlocks new possibilities for making an ultra worker Pal. Nonetheless, I’m very confident in this table, and you can use it with certainty without worrying that your base will have a subpar performance. These are the Pals I’d invest in when building a working base:

Medicine isn’t a priority in the early game, but if you really want to invest in it, Lifmunk is the best choice. You’ll want a proper specialist later, though.

The only Pal to compete with Tombat in being able to handle multiple jobs is Penking. It can work with cooling without taking a separate slot.

Vixy is still the goat for farming and ranching. It brings Pal Spheres, gold, and supplies, which is exactly what you need in the early game.

Now let’s go through the choices of early Pals that I’ve made, and I’ll explain in detail why they’re so good.

Best Early Base Pals to Catch First in Palworld 1.0

In the early game, there’s no need for a perfectly working machine. You need a good place for a base and for your base to work, period. If you’ve never played Palworld before, it’s a task on its own cause it can kinda be hard to make your Pals do all the stuff like moving the items or watering the crops, so choosing the right Pals for this is extremely, extremely important.

Vixy

Vixy’s biggest strength is not that it’s a great worker Pal. It’s basically a passive resource generator. Put Vixy in a ranch, and it can dig up useful early items like Pal Spheres, gold, arrows, and other supplies. While that may not sound crazy, early Palworld is all about draining you of resources little by little. Free Spheres alone can save you a lot of crafting time. Use Vixy for:

  • Passive Pal Sphere income
  • Extra gold and arrows
  • A low-effort ranch worker

Vixy isn’t the “best ranch pal 4ever” or anything, but it’s a great, if not the greatest, early Pal. It’s a huge quality-of-life improver.

Tombat

Tombat is the best early worker in Palworld 1.0. The primary reason is mining. You need proper mining Work Suitability for ore, and Tombat gives you that much earlier than other Pals. On top of that, it also has gathering and transporting, which means it can do it all on its own. Send it to the mine and let it do its job. Tombat is great for:

  • Early mining bases
  • Ore production
  • Gathering crops
  • Moving items to storage
  • Working through the night

Yeah, you got it right. Not only does Tombat do some of the most important jobs on the base, but it can also work at night. In case you didn’t know, nocturnal workers keep your base running while other Pals sleep. So if you were unamused with Tombat’s stats, this alone makes it extremely efficient.

Penking

Penking is the early generalist and my second favorite Pal. Most players should get this cutie penguin. It does watering, handiwork, mining, transporting, and cooling. That’s a crazy amount of utility for one Pal you can get early through an Alpha fight. I like Penking because it deals with a plethora of things at your base. It’s just up to you to make a choice about what it will work on:

  • Watering crops
  • Mining resources
  • Moving items
  • Helping with crafting
  • Cooling food storage

Is Penking the best at every single one of those jobs? Not really. But remember what I said: in the early days of your base, one flexible worker is much better than five specialists.

Arsox

Arsox is your early fire worker. You can’t really do without it. You need kindling for cooking and smelting, and Arsox is your guy for that. The bonus lumbering is really nice when the furnace isn’t busy. Not a very varied worker, but a reliable one. Use Arsox for:

  • Cooking food
  • Smelting ore
  • Early ingot production

Arsox is not a forever worker, but it’s one of the most important Pals on your base. At least I think so cause I can’t imagine going without food in Palworld. But of course, smelting is why you want to have it.

Wispaw

A new Pal has already made its way to my heart, and not because it’s a cat monster. Wispaw is an early Pal I’d use mainly for handiwork. This kitty makes what feels like an eternal wait for construction work to be over much easier to tolerate. Wispaw also works at night, which means your base keeps moving after your day workers go to sleep. Wispaw is best for:

  • Early crafting
  • Building
  • Night work
  • General base filler

Later in the game, Anubis is a complete upgrade over Wispaw cause it does pretty much the same stuff but better.

Broncherry

Broncherry is the early Planting Pal. If you want a real food base instead of surviving on berries, planting is an important step in that direction. Broncherry gives you strong planting super early compared to most serious farming Pals. Once you get one, your food improves almost instantly. Use Broncherry for:

  • Berry plantations
  • Wheat plantations
  • Early food automation
  • Any base that needs crop production

This is one of the few early Pals I’d consider keeping around for longer, especially if you invest in it later.

Puffolt

Puffolt is kind of interesting cause generating electricity isn’t as important at the very start, but it becomes important quickly once your base starts using powered facilities, which should happen fast enough if you do everything correctly. Its real killer feature is that it can help boost electricity work at the base and not just be a battery. Use Puffolt when:

  • You start needing electricity
  • Your base gets powered equipment
  • You want to prepare for midgame production
  • You don’t have a stronger Electric Pal yet

Puffolt is the best choice for energy production bar none for the early game. Obviously, later on you’ll need to substitute it, but it’ll keep you going through early mid to early late game.

Clovee

Clovee is an amplifier. It’s there because its partner skill can increase gathering work suitability for other base Pals. This is one of the new 1.0 support Pals that changes base planning. Instead of considering which one of your Pals has the biggest numbers, you now also have to think if a Pal can make the rest of the base better. Clovee is useful if your base depends heavily on crops and gathering workers.

Best Pals for Resource Bases

For a mining or resource base, these three jobs come first:

  • Mining
  • Transporting
  • Food support

Tombat and Penking are undisputed champs early on. Tombat mines and transports. Penking mines, waters, transports, and helps with cooling. Add a planter like Broncherry and a kindling Pal like Arsox, and you already have a base that feeds itself and produces materials. A basic early mining base looks like this:

If you somehow catch Mammorest early, you've just got a jackpot. Mammorest has strong lumbering, mining, and planting early on, but catching it at a low level is not something I’d rely on as a part of your build. You either get lucky or get stomped.

Best Pals for Food Production

Food production is unnecessarily awkward cause I’ve seen a lot of newer players who build a base that technically works, but for every step forward they stumble and have to get up. A food base needs:

  1. Planting
  2. Watering
  3. Gathering
  4. Transporting
  5. Storage and Cooling

That’s why Broncherry, Penking, Tombat, and Clovee are all good choices for the early game. They cover the production without a huge investment. A good choice of Pals for early food production would be:

  • Broncherry for Planting
  • Penking for Watering and Cooling
  • Tombat for Gathering and Transporting
  • Clovee if you want to boost Gathering
  • Vixy in the Ranch for extra passive supplies

Later, you can start replacing generalists with specialists, but I wouldn’t rush it. A stable food base is far more important than a perfect one that needs six rare Pals to get going.

Best Pals for Crafting and Utility

Handiwork is one of those jobs you’ll glance over until you’re standing at a bench waiting for something to be ready. Early on, Wispaw is one of my favorite picks for that because it gives you the 2nd level handiwork and works at night. Penking can also help here, but Penking is already busy doing half the base’s other jobs. Give the poor fella some rest. For crafting, I’d use:

  • Wispaw
  • Penking as backup
  • Ribbuny later, if you need handiwork support for the whole base
  • Anubis, as soon as you can get it

I think Anubis is the long-term crafting goal for most players. The thing about 1.0 is that old early breeding strats aren’t reliable anymore. If you’re starting fresh, use these early workers first, then work toward the old favorites once your base is going.

How to Improve Base Pals in Palworld 1.0

Catching a good worker is only the start now. In 1.0, base Pals can be improved much more meaningfully. The main upgrade paths are:

  • Condensing
  • Applied Technique books
  • Partner Skills that boost base work
  • Pal Labor Research Laboratory upgrades
  • Breeding to improve passives

Don’t throw every book at the first half-decent Pal you catch. Save the serious upgrades for workers that you know will stay useful. Good early candidates for investment are:

  • Tombat: If you’re using it in a mining base
  • Broncherry: If it carries your food production
  • Penking: It covers a lot of jobs
  • Wispaw: Amazing night craftsman… Craftspal?
  • Vixy: For the ranch production

Out of all these, I’d invest in Penking. Even when there are better replacements for it, I find it hard to move away from the penguin since it’s so convenient. The Pal Labor Research Laboratory is also something you’ll find hugely useful, but the material costs can be rough, especially early on. I suggest understanding how it works early on and then, once your resources are straight, start using it more. If you're breeding for base workers, target these four passives: Artisan, Work Slave, Serious, and Lucky. Stack all four on a specialist, and the speed difference over a default Pal is dramatic.

Base Tips for Better Workers

It doesn’t matter if you have the best worker Pals if your base layout is a mess. If Pals' pathing breaks, they won’t be of any use. Large Pals also need enough vertical space. Don’t build tiny rooms and then wonder why a giant worker is having an existential crisis at the doorway. The basics I always handle first:

  • One bed per Pal
  • Enough hot springs for SAN recovery
  • Food production before anything
  • Storage close to production areas
  • At least two walls of height for areas used by larger Pals
  • Dedicated walking paths between the stations
  • Separate bases for mining, ranching, and crafting once you unlock more slots

Also, don’t ignore world settings. If you’re playing solo and want a smoother building experience, you can do many important things such as reduce structure damage, adjust deterioration, increase work speed, and tweak Ranch production. All of this is mostly preferential since you won’t understand your perfect settings until you’ve played enough, and even the best settings other players provide are only best for them but might be trash for you if you don’t understand what they do. Some players see it as cheating, but I think there’s nothing wrong with slightly tweaking the stats for your convenience. You do you, boo.
