Runes of Aldur League Challenges

Traditionally, every new league in Path of Exile 1 comes with a set of challenges designed to encourage players to interact with all of the game’s content. Up until this point, PoE 2 didn’t have these challenges, but that changes with the 0.5 update titled Return of the Ancients that comes out on May 29, 1 PM PDT.

Below, you can see the full list of challenges and their requirements:

Challenge

No. of tasks

Description

The Runeseeker

6

Inscribe runes at Runic Remnants using crafts with 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 or more rune slots.

The Hunter

6

Kill 6 optional campaign bosses.

The Ascendant

4

Earn all 8 Ascendancy points by finishing the full Ascendancy trial progression.

The Master

1

Unlock all the other challenges (not confirmed).

The Reliquarian

50

Identify 50 different Unique items.

The Artisan

14

Craft an item using each of the league crafting materials tied to remnant encounters.

The Cartographer

301

Fully allocate the main Atlas Passive Tree.

The Vanquisher

3

Defeat 3 pinnacle bosses, including Vessel of Kulemak at full strength.

The challenges will be active throughout the duration of the league, so when the next league comes around, there’ll be a new set. As you can see, some challenges will ask you to interact with the runecrafting, which is a mechanic unique to Runes of Aldur league. Check out my Runes of Aldur league guide if you want to know what else is included.

Now, let me go over each challenge tab and give you some tips.

The Runeseeker

Inscribe Runes from your Tome at Runic Remnants using each of these lengths:

  • 2 Runes
  • 3 Runes
  • 4 Runes
  • 5 Runes
  • 6 Runes
  • 7 or more Runes

This is the one that asks you to interact with the runecrafting mechanic. Throughout the game, you will come across these Ezomyte Remnants, which are kind of like your crafting stations. Each one has a predetermined list of things you can make with them. Each recipe requires runes that you need to insert to make the item. If the recipe requires 4 runes, 1-3 runes might already be there and you just need to slot the missing one. If there are recipes with the same combination of runes but different 4th rune, then you basically select which item you want.

All recipes are recorded in Farrow’s tome and are unlocked automatically. You can find even more info about the league’s mechanic here.

Early on, the recipes will only ask 2 runes for crafting. But later on, you’ll come across Remnants with recipes that require 7 or even more, apparently up to 10, however, for the last one, you only need a recipe with 7 runes.

As soon as you insert the required amount of runes, it will spawn the enemies infused with the power of runes used in the recipe. To complete the craft and get the item, you must defeat all enemies. There are some crazy runic effects, like the one that makes one of the monsters immune to damage and the only way to defeat it is to kill its followers. If you’re doing it for 7 runes, you’ll have to fight 6 waves of enemies, apparently, one wave for each rune in the recipe.

The Hunter

Kill these optional Bosses in the Campaign:

    • The Crowbell is found in Act 1, The Hunting Grounds
  • Great White One is found in Act 4, Whakapanu Island, at the Shark Pit.
  • Kabala, Constrictor Queen is found in Act 2, Keth, inside the Venom Pit.
  • Akthi, the Final Sting is found in the Interlude, The Khari Crossing.
  • Blackjaw, the Remnant is found in Act 3, Jiquani’s Machinarium, inside The Oubliette.
  • Anundr, the Sandworm is found in the Interlude, The Khari Crossing.

The Hunter sends you after six optional campaign bosses. Some of these are optional and require a bit of an exploration on your part. Don’t worry, though - I included boss locations to help you out with that.

For example, Akthi, the Final Sting and Anundr, the Sandworm as the trickiest ones to locate. Both are found in Khari Crossing. To reach them, follow the dry riverbed until you arrive at their arena.

The Ascendant

Earn all 8 Ascendency Points by completing the Trials of Ascendancy:

  • First Trial
  • Second Trial
  • Third Trial
  • Final Trial

The Ascendant requires you to gain all 8 Ascendancy points for their class. This means completing the full Ascendancy trial progression, from the first trial through the final trial.

The last set of points is the hardest part. You can either defeat Zarokh on the fourth floor of the Trial of the Sekhemas, or defeat the Trialmaster in the Trial of Chaos after finding all three keys. The Trial of Chaos takes longer because it can require multiple runs, while the Trial of the Sekhemas final boss is more difficult. You have a choice to make here.

The Master

So, I don’t actually have confirmed information about what this challenge is about, but if I had to guess, I’d say this is the “completionist” challenge that requires the completion of the other 7 challenges. I will update this once I have more info.

The Reliquarian

Identify 50 Unique Items:

  • 50 Unique Items

The Reliquarian is simple compared to the other challenges. You need to identify 50 different Unique items during the league. Uniques drop even on low levels, and as you know, not all of them are for your class. They also drop as “unidentified” and you need to use your Scroll of Wisdom to reveal its stats.

If you have trouble finding enough Uniques, you can use Jado, the Atlas Master, since he has several abilities focused on finding Unique items. He can be first met at the Qimah Reservoir. This is done via Masters of the Atlas “ascendancy” tree for the endgame. Jado’s Spycraft has an upgrade for “Strongboxes in your Maps have 100% increased chance to be Unique.” This makes the challenge much easier to target once players reach endgame.

The Artisan

Craft an Item using each of these Verisium Ingredients:

  • Verisium
  • Runic Alloy
  • Adaptive Alloy
  • Protective Alloy
  • Expansive Alloy
  • Swift Alloy
  • Any Kalguuran Crest
  • Exceptional Verisium
  • Cyclonic Alloy
  • Prismatic Alloy
  • Mystic Alloy
  • Sovereign Alloy
  • Celestial Alloy
  • Any Flux

The Artisan is the crafting challenge for Runes of Aldur. To complete it, you need to use a wide range of crafting materials that come from Runic Remnant encounters. Verisium and Alloy are the two new crafting materials slash currencies and just like other currencies, there are grades to them.

So, first you need to collect these materials, all of which come from Remnant encounters, and then use them on an item. Remember, its best to have a spare item to use them on, if you don’t actually need to make specific changes on your equipped gear.

The Cartographer

Fully allocate the main Atlas Passive Tree:

  • Main Atlas Passive Tree

This is the endgame completionist challenge. There are 301 total nodes, making it one of the longest goals in the league.

You can do this by naturally clearing the maps inside the Fortress, which is going to take you some time. The faster method is tied to the Arbiter of Divinity. Each time you defeat the Arbiter, you gain the ability to automatically complete a large section of the fortress. His fight is accessed by finding keys hidden in the Citadels in the Atlas, which are marked by large glowing beams in the fog. After four Arbiter kills, the entire fortress can be completed.

The Vanquisher

Kill these Endgame Pinnacle Bosses:

  • Vessel of Kulemak at full strength
  • The Bodach
  • Tangmazu

The Vanquisher is the hardest bossing challenge in the set. It requires you to defeat three pinnacle bosses tied to Delirium, Ritual, and Abyss content.

The most important detail is the Vessel of Kulemak requirement. The challenge asks for a full strength kill, so players must return the finger, risk the item during the fight, and still defeat the boss. A normal Vessel of Kulemak kill will not complete this part of the challenge.

How to Unlock Runes of Aldur Challenge Rewards

Runes of Aldur rewards are unlocked by completing league challenges during Return of the Ancients. You can find more details regarding challenges by reading the official patch notes.

You do not need to complete specific challenges for the early rewards. Completing any 1 challenge unlocks the Runes of Aldur Totem Pole, while completing any 2 challenges unlocks the Knight of Aldur Boots. After that, the armor set continues at 4, 6, and 8 completed challenges.

The full Knight of Aldur armor set requires all 8 challenges. This includes the easier early goals, such as The Runeseeker and The Hunter, as well as harder endgame goals like The Cartographer and The Vanquisher.

These rewards are league-exclusive. The Knight of Aldur set will only be obtainable during the Runes of Aldur league, so players who want the full cosmetic set need to finish all 8 challenges before the league ends.
