Pokemon GO Best Gym Defenders Tier List 2026

Welcome to my Pokémon GO Best Gym Defenders Tier List, where I ranked the best defenders for your gym. I also went in depth explaining how I ranked them and how to pick them on your own.

Blissey, Snorlax, and Chansey from Pokemon Go

Pokemon GO Best Gym Defenders Tier List Quick Summary:

  • Blissey and Chansey are the best Gym Defenders.
  • I ranked defenders by bulk score = Defense x Stamina.
  • Lower-CP tanks like Chansey, Wobbuffet, and Shuckle retain motivation longer.
  • Avoid stacking defenders that all share a Fighting weakness.
  • Switch bulky Normal-types with Fairy, Ghost, Flying, or Psychic Pokémon.

Pokemon GO Best Gym Defenders Tier List

So, you want to know about the best Gym Defenders in Pokemon GO. Those are not necessarily the ones with the highest CP (Combat Power). Actually, their job is to make sure the attacker takes as much time to defeat them as possible and spends as many consumables as they can. Because eventually, they will defeat your defenders. You just need a chance to get back at them with Golden Razz Berries.

Tier

Best Gym Defenders

S-Tier

Blissey, Chansey

A-Tier

Snorlax, Togekiss, Umbreon, Mandibuzz, Florges, Milotic, Goodra

B-Tier

Wobbuffet, Drifblim, Shuckle, Alomomola, Sylveon, Steelix, Lapras, Metagross, Clodsire, Annihilape, Skeledirge, Azumarill, Toxapex, Melmetal, Garganacl, Gardevoir

C-Tier

Slaking, Ursaluna, Avalugg, Hisuian Avalugg, Rhyperior, Tyranitar, Garchomp, Dragonite, Bastiodon, Coalossal

Obviously I didn’t rank all Pokémon in the game, only those that are usually used as gym defenders.

S-Tier Gym Defenders

Blissey and Chansey are the only defenders I would place in S-Tier. Pokémon GO Hub gives them bulk scores of 83.8k and 62.3k, putting both well ahead of the rest of the roster. Snorlax is close next at 55.8k. I’ll explain what bulk is later on; just bear with me for now.

Blissey is the better choice, though. Its higher CP and enormous health pool make it harder to deal with, especially when the motivation is at maximum.

Chansey has a max CP of only 1,418, so its passive motivation decay is slower than Blissey’s. It still has 487 Stamina, which is why such a small CP number is on one of the game’s best defenders.

A-Tier Gym Defenders

You need more than two defenders, though. So, pick someone from A-Tier.

Snorlax, Umbreon, Mandibuzz, Milotic, and Goodra bring high bulk score. They are not as aggressive as Blissey, but attackers still have to spend a reasonable amount of time dealing with them.

Then take a looksie at Togekiss and Florges, who are here because both counter Fighting, which makes them good to use alongside Normal-type defenders. An attacker using a Fighting counter against Blissey or Snorlax will be forced to switch up.

Togekiss has 42,966 bulk, which is lower than several Pokémon beneath it. I still rank it above them because defending a Gym isn’t a one-on-one brawl.

B-Tier Gym Defenders

B-Tier is the tier for special-use Pokémon. Hear me out!

Wobbuffet has only 40,492 bulk and a Max CP of 1,160. That is not enough for A-Tier as a general defender, but its low CP, 382 Stamina, and resistance to Fighting make it excellent for Gyms that aren’t being constantly attacked. If you’re in such an area, you’re lucky!

Shuckle takes this idea even further. It has 396 Defense but only 85 Stamina, giving it 33,660 bulk. Its Max CP is just 458, so it stays motivated for a long time. I would not pick it if I’m being constantly attacked, but it can be surprisingly annoying after spending days in a quiet Gym.

Drifblim, Azumarill, Toxapex, Annihilape, and Gardevoir are good for Fighting counters. Gardevoir is not especially bulky, but its Psychic/Fairy type mix is great against Fighting and gives it a place next to Normal-types. Its base stats are 237 Attack, 195 Defense, and 169 Stamina.

The rest of B-Tier have a mediocre bulk or niche matchups, so they’re whatever. These Pokémon can contribute to a varied Gym, though I would not really spend too much on most of them for defending.

C-Tier Gym Defenders

Imma be honest, C-Tier Pokémon tend to look better in the selection screen than they are at defending anything.

Slaking is the most obvious example. Its enormous CP and 284 Stamina make it look intimidating, but Yawn is kinda useless. Attackers can build energy and work through it without facing the threat suggested by its CP.

Avalugg has 51,840 bulk, exactly the same total as Umbreon. Pure Ice type makes it weak in defense, though. Hisuian Avalugg adds Rock type and becomes especially shitty to Fighting and Steel attacks.

Rhyperior, Tyranitar, Garchomp, Dragonite, Bastiodon, and Coalossal have similar problems. Their stats are good enough, but their types are the ones most players know how to counter and do it fast.

How I Ranked Best Gym Defenders

Basically, I ranked each Pokémon by how much of a pain it is to remove from a Gym. I looked at how long the fight takes, whether the attacker has to do a good ol’ switcharoo counters, how many healing items they burn through, and how much time the defender’s owner gets to feed Berries.

Defense and Stamina are just a baseline. I then adjusted the placements for motivation decay, type, moves, lineup, and investment cost.

What is Bulk Score?

Pokémon GO Hub was my main source for the numbers in this tier list. It ranks raw bulk by multiplying Defense by Stamina. That does not account for moves or typing, but it gives me a solid baseline before I start adjusting placements.

If you look at the top 3 Pokémon, you can see that their bulk number is much higher than the rest. Check this out:

  • Blissey: 169 Defense × 496 Stamina = 83,824 bulk
  • Chansey: 128 Defense × 487 Stamina = 62,336 bulk
  • Snorlax: 169 Defense × 330 Stamina = 55,770 bulk

By this epic math, Blissey leads Chansey by around 21,500 score. Chansey then leads Snorlax by more than 6,500. That gap is large enough to separate the top two defenders from everything else.

But this number becomes less important further down the tiers. Umbreon and Avalugg both reach 51,840, but I placed them several tiers apart. Umbreon has fewer severe weaknesses, while Avalugg is waay easier to counter.

Motivation and Current CP

Every Gym Defender loses motivation over time, and its effective CP falls with it. The passive decay rate scales with the Pokémon’s maximum CP, which gives lower-CP tanks a useful role.

Chansey, Wobbuffet, and Shuckle retain motivation better than massive high-CP defenders. This makes them useful in rural, residential, or otherwise quiet Gyms where they may remain unattended for several days.

That does not mean low CP is always better. When a Gym is already being attacked, I want a bulky defender with high current CP. A fully motivated Blissey is far better than a Shuckle.

I therefore treated CP as kinda situational:

  • High current CP helps during an immediate attack.
  • Lower maximum CP helps with passive motivation retention.
  • High CP without good bulk or moves does not make a strong defender.

Type and Common Counters

Normal-type tanks dominate Gym defense, but they all share a Fighting weakness. A Gym containing Blissey, Chansey, Snorlax, Slaking, and Ursaluna allows an attacker to keep using the same counter. That is why I ranked defenders that resist Fighting higher.

Togekiss, Florges, Gardevoir, Wobbuffet, Drifblim, Azumarill, and Toxapex are all like that. The attacker may still win, but changing Pokémon adds time and makes the enemy keep switching up their team.

I did not rank every Flying, Psychic, or Ghost Pokémon as a great Fighting counter just because of its type. Dual typing can mess with that advantage, and sometimes it gives the attacker an even easier weakness to fight against.

Bulk score can also hide dangerous matchups. Rhyperior has 47,690 bulk, compared with Togekiss at 42,966. Rhyperior still ranks lower because its Rock/Ground type is extremely vulnerable to Water and Grass attacks. Togekiss adds more to a Normal-heavy Gym despite having less theoretical bulk.

Defensive Pressure

Attack was my lowest-priority base stat, but I did not ignore defensive damage.

A defender that threatens a Charged Attack can force dodges or consume more Potions and Revives. There is a tradeoff, though. Gym attackers gain 0.5 energy for each point of HP damage they take, so harder-hitting defender attacks can also help them reach their next Charged Attack.

This is why I focused on total time and resource pressure rather than Attack alone.

Chansey has only 60 Attack and still ranks second because its 487 Stamina takes so long to work through. Slaking has much larger headline stats, yet Yawn barely threatens the attacker.

Teamup and Investment

Obviously you gotta have more than one defender. Adding Snorlax behind Blissey gives the attacker another large health bar to deal with, but it also provides another favorable matchup for their Fighting counter. Adding Togekiss or Drifblim is another cause for headache.

This is how a defender with 43,000 bulk can contribute more than one with 48,000.

I also downgraded some Pokémon that require large investments that don’t do much for your defense. Local activity, Berry feeding, teammates, and placement timing have a greater effect on Gym control than pushing a mediocre defender to Level 50.

How to Pick Defenders for Your Gym

Check every Pokémon already defending the Gym before choosing yours. A Gym can contain up to six defenders, and only one Pokémon of each species can be assigned at a time.

The order is also important. Attackers battle defenders in the order they were placed, starting with the Pokémon that has occupied the Gym the longest.

If you have S-tier in your defense but you placed them like this, you’re asking to get beaten up:

Blissey → Chansey → Snorlax → Slaking → Ursaluna → another Fighting-weak defender

The health bars are large, but one Fighting-type can handle nearly the entire Gym.

A more irritating order would be:

Blissey → Togekiss → Snorlax → Drifblim → Chansey → Gardevoir

Now the attacker has to switch counters or fight through several unfavorable matchups. You normally control only your own placement, so treat this as a model for what the Gym needs rather than a team you can freely arrange.

For an actively contested Gym, add a healthy, bulky defender such as Blissey, Chansey, Snorlax, or Togekiss.

For a quiet Gym, Chansey, Wobbuffet, Shuckle, or a lower-level bulky Pokémon may retain useful motivation for longer.

Do not just throw in another Normal-type because it has the highest CP in your collection. If the Gym already has Blissey and Snorlax, adding something that can punish Fighting-types will usually help a lot more.

Finally, active Berry feeding beats any passive lineup. A Golden Razz Berry fully restores a defender’s motivation and can force an attacker to repeat battles they have already completed.

F.A.Q.

What Is the Best Gym Defender in Pokémon GO?

Blissey is the best overall Gym Defender. It has very high Defense and Stamina, making this Pokémon far ahead of the rest of the roster.

Is Blissey or Chansey Better for Gym Defense in Pokémon GO?

Blissey is better during an active attack. Chansey is better suited to long stays because its lower Max CP gives it slower passive motivation decay.

What Is the Best Low-CP Gym Defender in Pokémon GO?

Chansey is the strongest overall low-CP option. Wobbuffet and Shuckle are useful alternatives for quieter Gyms.

Is Slaking a Good Gym Defender in Pokémon GO?

Slaking is usable but overrated. Its CP looks frightening, yet Yawn puts very little pressure on the attacker.

Does CP Matter for Gym Defense in Pokémon GO?

Yes, but CP is situational. High current CP helps during an attack, while lower maximum CP slows passive motivation decay. Bulk, type, and lineup utility are better ranking factors than CP alone.

What Is the Best Gym Defender Team in Pokémon GO?

Variety is your best ally. Blissey, Togekiss, Snorlax, Drifblim, Chansey, and Gardevoir would be one irritating example.

Can Legendary Pokémon Defend Gyms in Pokémon GO?

No. Legendary Pokémon and most Mythical Pokémon cannot defend Gyms. Meltan and Melmetal are the exceptions, which is why Melmetal is ranked in this tier list.

Should I Power Up Pokémon Only for Gym Defense in Pokémon GO?

Usually not. Use suitable Pokémon you already own before spending major amounts of Stardust or Candy XL on a dedicated defender.
