What is the War Plans Playlist in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred

War Plans consists of two parts, and I find it easier to understand what it is if you treat it that way. One of those parts is a “playlist” of endgame activities. Basically, you can queue up to 5 different activities, select additional modifiers for them if you want, and then complete them in that order to get additional rewards.

What’s the point? Well, the idea behind this was to make less relevant endgame content more popular. Things like Nightmare Dungeons or Kurast Undercity are always overshadowed by the Pit and Helltides, but with War Plans, this is no longer the case.

It’s very easy to set up and use - you select 5 activities, then open the map and use the direct teleport to the first activity in the queue. There’s no need to travel to the location or find the right teleport on the map. The list of activities that can be selected is:

  1. Tree of Whispers
  2. Nightmare Dungeons
  3. Kurast Undercity
  4. Infernal Hordes
  5. The Pit
  6. Helltides
  7. Lair Bosses

When you select a node on the War Plans, it shows you the activity objectives and rewards. Among the rewards, you’ll see a certain amount of Activity Experience. Some nodes have icons that showcase the type of rewards you’ll get. If you see a small ring icon under the node, it means you’ll get jewelry spoils. If the icon shows an anvil and a hammer, you’ll get resources.

War Plans Rank

There are 10 ranks for War Plans. You increase the rank by completing the War Plans playlist several times over. Higher rank increases the rewards from the playlist system and also expands the selection options when selecting the next 5 activities. You get more nodes with a greater variety of rewards and objectives. This makes target farming much easier.

Daily Reroll Tokens

War Plans also includes a daily reroll token system. In Blizzplanet’s hands-on review, the review build had a daily reset that granted 3 tokens, and each token could be used to swap an unwanted War Plan objective for a randomly presented alternative. That adds another layer of control to the playlist, since you are not forced to accept every node exactly as it appears. For target farming, this matters a lot. If one step in your route does not match the loot, materials, or activity type you want, you can spend a token and try to turn it into something more useful for your current grind. Because the tokens reset daily, they are best treated as a tool to smooth out weak boards instead of something to save forever.

Full Board Reroll

If the problem is not just one bad node but the entire board, War Plans lets you reroll the full board and generate a fresh path. In Windows Central’s developer interview, Blizzard described the system as flexible rather than locked in, noting that players can reroll a board if it does not fit their current build or mood. That is an important part of why the playlist system feels easy to use. You are guided into a structured route, but you are not trapped in a setup that makes no sense for your character. In practice, that means War Plans gives you two forms of control: small adjustments through daily reroll tokens, and a full reset when the whole board is not worth running.

War Plans Activity Skill Trees

The second part of the War Plans has to do with skill trees, created specifically for each type of endgame content that can be selected in War Plans. These Skill Trees offer unique modifications that change how their type of content works. I can’t help but compare it to the Atlas from Path of Exile, so if you know how that system works, Diablo 4’s version is just that, but in a very rudimentary form. As you play War Plans, you earn Activity Experience, and that experience is used to level these trees and unlock points.

Note: Activity Experience is granted even if you’re playing an activity outside of the War Plans, on its own.

The important part is that these trees are not just flat buffs. They are designed to modify the activities themselves. Instead of simply giving you more loot or increasing difficulty, they can replace rewards, add new enemy encounters, or inject mechanics from one activity into another.

For example, a node called Infernal Bargain: Obducite from the skill tree for Infernal Hordes. This node removes Gem Fragments from Infernal Hordes and replaces them with bonus Obducite. So instead of getting a resource you may no longer need, you can switch it up to a different one. That makes the mode far more useful for players who are targeting gear upgrades. 

The skill tree is done in such a way that selecting one node might make it impossible to unlock another one, especially if the effects of one cancel the effects of the other.

  • Undercity Invasion - Invasion Portals that spawn enemies now appear as you progress through the Undercity. These enemies grant a small amount of Attunement when killed.
  • Last Gasp - Time collected from slain enemies with 5 seconds or less remaining in the Undercity doubles the Time earned.
  • Cabochon Merchant - If you slay a Portal Prankster within the Undercity, the Cabochon Merchant will appear after killing the District Boss. The Cabochon Merchant will sell you Runes and Gems for Gold.
  • Forgotten City - Gain additional Forgotten Souls when completing the Undercity. All enemies within the Undercity have +1 Monster Power.

So, you see, it's more than just targeting resources. You can change monster spawns or add mechanics from other activities.

The system is also built around specialization. There seems to be only seven points that you can invest in each activity’s tree. Since there are way more nodes than that, you are not meant to take every node in a tree, and some choices can block access to others. In other words, the point is not to max everything out. The point is to shape each activity around the rewards, encounters, and farming goals that matter most to you.

And that’s what War Plans are - a system that is meant to tie together endgame activities that previously felt disconnected.

It is possible to play the same War Plans playlist in coop with friends, but some players reported an issue where non-leader players don’t get completion. Only the party leader gets the full credit.
