Pokémon GO Armored Mewtwo Raid Guide

Armored Mewtwo is back in Pokémon GO Raids after five years, and this version of Mewtwo plays very differently from the regular one. It has much more defense and lower attack. In this Armored Mewtwo Raid guide, I’ll go over its weaknesses, best counters, recommended group size, and why you want to catch this new-old Pokémon.

Armored Mewtwo Raid Quick Summary:

  • Armored Mewtwo is a pure Psychic-type Pokémon. It is weak to Dark, Ghost, and Bug attacks
  • Dawn Wings Necrozma is currently the best overall counter
  • You need at least 3 very strong Trainers, but 5-8 is a much better group size
  • Raid catches range from 1740-1821 CP normally and 2175-2276 CP in Windy weather
  • Armored Mewtwo is much better for PvP than for Raids due to its high Defense and relatively low Attack

To beat Armored Mewtwo, you’ll need to have strong Pokémon alongside you. If your account isn’t strong enough yet, check out any of our Pokémon GO Accounts and find the one that you like.

Pokémon GO Armored Mewtwo Raid Overview

After five years, the Armored Mewtwo returns to Pokémon GO. And it’s still not Shiny. Armored Mewtwo sounds way more daunting than regular Mewtwo, and it kinda is, just not for the reason you might expect. It has 182 Attack, 278 Defense, and 214 HP, which makes it significantly sturdier than the normal version but also much worse as a damage dealer. It doesn’t even break the top 50 as a Raid attacker. The Raid starts on Saturday, 5th of September 2026. The important note for the Raid itself is that Armored Mewtwo is a pure Psychic type. It has the same three weaknesses a normal Mewtwo has:

  • Dark
  • Ghost
  • Bug

Dark and Ghost generally offer the best choice of Pokémon attackers to counter this Mewtwo. There are simply more strong Pokémon available in those types, especially if you have Mega Evolutions, Shadows, or stuff like Dawn Wings Necrozma, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t fight it with more budget options. Here’s a complete Pokémon GO Armored Mewtwo raid overview:

On paper, three Trainers can pull this raid off with strong enough counters, but I do not recommend organizing a raid with just two of your friends unless - and that’s a big unless - everyone is an expert with their roster. Five to eight Trainers is way more comfortable, and with nine or more, the fight should barely give you trouble. Current simulations put three as the minimum and five to eight as the optimal group size.

Best Armored Mewtwo Counters

Armored Mewtwo is called Armored for a reason. It’s sturdy as hell, so this is one Raid where bringing proper counters makes a noticeable difference. Dawn Wings Necrozma is the strongest Pokémon you can take here, followed by Mega Mewtwo Y and Mega Tyranitar. If you have any of these already upgraded, use them. Here are the best Armored Mewtwo counters:

Dawn Wings Necrozma is my go-to pick if you have it leveled. The damage is great, and unlike some glassier Ghost attackers, it doesn’t die the moment Mewtwo lays its eyes on it. Mega Tyranitar, on the other hand, is the working-man's choice out of the top few. Make no mistake, Dawn Wings is overall stronger, but Tyranitar is pretty bulky, has both Bite and Brutal Swing hitting for super-effective damage, and is pretty safe for fighting the Raid boss thanks to its good defense (276) and HP (225). Necrozma is 220 DEF and 200 HP in comparison, which is not bad as well. Shadow Hydreigon is another good choice. Bite + Brutal Swing is an excellent Dark moveset, and the Shadow damage bonus pushes it all the way into the top five of this list. Regular Hydreigon is weaker, obviously, but is still perfectly usable if you don’t have the Shadow version. Mega Gengar is the glass cannon choice, but it can work. Its damage is great, but it dies if Mewtwo as much as sneezes. Mega Absol has pretty much the same problem, though Brutal Swing is really hard-hitting, as long as it stays alive.

Budget Armored Mewtwo Counters

As I said, you don’t need a full team of Megas, Shadows, and fused Legendaries to beat Armored Mewtwo. There are quite a few regular Pokémon that perform well enough, and some of them are much easier to build if your account isn’t as blessed as some veteran ones. Without further ado, here are the best budget Armored Mewtwo counters:

Hydreigon is the best budget option in my opinion. Bite + Brutal Swing is exactly what you want against a Psychic-type Raid boss, and you don’t really need a Shadow version for it to perform well. If you already have one upgraded, don’t waste resources trying to replace it just for this Raid. Gholdengo is quite helpful in this raid too. The problem is getting Gholdengo in the first place, so “budget” Pokémon is a bit of a stretch, but still. Regular Tyranitar is probably the safest choice of Pokémon you can go with. Bite + Brutal Swing works great, plus it has good DEF and HP, and if you’ve been around for some time, you probably already have one upgraded. Dragapult and Chandelure are our Ghost options. Chandelure is more accessible, while Dragapult performs better. If you have Dragapult, it’s an easy choice. Kingambit and Incineroar are also very usable Dark types if you already have them leveled. You’re probably already eyeing that Salamence now. Bite + Brutal Swing combo puts it on this list despite it not being a type that Armored Mewtwo has a weakness to. I wouldn’t get one specifically for Armored Mewtwo, but if you already have a strong Salamence with this moveset, it’ll do the job. But yeah, it’s like the last resort option.

How Many Players Do You Need for Armored Mewtwo?

Technically, three. Would I recommend doing it with three? Not really. Armored Mewtwo has a lot of Defense, and that’s what makes the fight drag. It’s unlikely to KO all of your Pokemon with a low Attack score, so the problem isn’t surviving it as much as getting through all that Defense and HP before the timer runs out. In case you missed it in one of the previous sections, current counter simulations estimate around three Trainers as the absolute minimum, while five to eight is the sweet spot. Here’s how I’d put it:

Group Size

Difficulty

3-4

Possible with strong counters and good teams. Four is slightly better, but you still need to be thoughtful about what Pokémon you bring with you

5-8

The best and recommended way to take on Armored Mewtwo

9+

Super easy

Weather and moves can also make a difference. Windy weather boosts Armored Mewtwo itself, while certain other weather conditions, like fog for Dark and Ghost, or rain for Bug type, can boost your attackers. If you’re raiding with randoms, I’d wait for at least five other players unless all players in the lobby have upgraded Mewtwo counters.

Armored Mewtwo Catch CP and Weather Boost

Once you beat the Raid, the CP tells you roughly how good the Armored Mewtwo is before you even start throwing balls. Without a weather boost, Armored Mewtwo appears at Level 20 with:

  • 1740 CP minimum
  • 1821 CP maximum

During Windy weather, the encounter is Level 25:

  • 2175 CP minimum
  • 2276 CP maximum

The 1821 and 2276 CP catches are your 100% IV targets for normal and weather-boosted Raids, respectively.

Armored Mewtwo has a maximum CP of 3603 at Level 50, but let’s be honest, it’s not gonna be a meta Pokemon ever. Max CP is not really why you want to get it. Armored Mewtwo is a collector’s Pokemon. It’s somewhat good in PvP, thanks to its good defensive stats, but for PvE, it’s very subpar. Regular Mewtwo is a much better Raid attacker because of its higher offensive stats. If you want to make use of your Armored Mewtwo, he can be one of the quite strong Gym Defenders.

Is Armored Mewtwo Even Worth Catching?

Yes, but mostly for PvP and collection rather than PvE. While Armored Mewtwo has the Mewtwo name and Psystrike, it’s not the same insane Psychic Raid attacker. Its Attack stat is simply too low compared to regular Mewtwo. For PvP, though, it might be a decent choice. General consensus on its recommended moves for PvP is:

  • Fast Attack: Confusion
  • Charged Attack: Psystrike
  • Second Charged Attack: Dynamic Punch

Psystrike is especially good. It deals significantly more Psychic damage over a battle than Psychic or Future Sight. Ultra League is where Armored Mewtwo shines the most. Its high Defense becomes useful there. Psystrike + Dynamic Punch gives it two Charged Attacks with very different coverage. Dark and Ghost Pokémon are still gonna make its life miserable, obviously, but against a favorable matchup, Armored Mewtwo can be incredibly annoying to remove. There’s also the collector angle. Armored Mewtwo isn’t an edgy-dressed normal Mewtwo. It’s a separate form that you could only get five years ago before this return. Strangely enough, the devs didn’t make it Shiny for the grandiose reveal cause it would gather way more hype, though people are still excited. Do note that I write this article as of September 2026, so if you’re reading it from the future and they dropped the Shiny Armored Mewtwo, ignore what I previously said. I got carried away. In short, if you already have six perfect IV Psychic Raid attackers, you probably don’t need to dump all your Candy XL into Armored Mewtwo. Catch a good one, feel the dopamine rush, forget about it in a week.

F.A.Q

What is Armored Mewtwo weak to in Pokémon GO?

Armored Mewtwo is weak to Dark, Ghost, and Bug attacks. Dark and Ghost are generally the strongest options because of Pokémon like Dawn Wings Necrozma, Mega Houndoom, Mega Gengar, Mega Tyranitar, Darkrai, and Hydreigon.

What is the best counter for Armored Mewtwo?

Dawn Wings Necrozma with Shadow Claw and Moongeist Beam is currently the strongest overall Armored Mewtwo Raid counter. Mega Houndoom, Mega Mewtwo Y with Shadow Ball, Mega Gengar, and Mega Tyranitar are right behind it.

What are the best budget Pokémon counters for the Armored Mewtwo fight?

The best budget counters for Armored Mewtwo are Hydreigon, Gholdengo, Tyranitar, Dragapult, Kingambit, Incineroar, Absol, Chandelure, and Salamence. Out of these, I’d prioritize Hydreigon and Tyranitar, cause both can have Bite + Brutal Swing and deal great super-effective Dark damage without needing a Mega or Shadow version. Chandelure is another good option if you want Ghost damage with Hex + Shadow Ball.

Can Armored Mewtwo be Shiny?

No. Shiny Armored Mewtwo is currently unavailable in Pokémon GO.

What is the perfect CP for Armored Mewtwo?

A perfect Level 20 Raid catch is 1821 CP. With a Windy weather boost, a perfect Level 25 Armored Mewtwo is 2276 CP.

Is Armored Mewtwo better than regular Mewtwo?

Not for Raids. Regular Mewtwo has much better offensive potential. Armored Mewtwo sacrifices Attack for Defense and is much more prevalent in PvP, especially in the Ultra League.
