Rogue Changes in Midnight
Rogue has always been the class for the daring. With all 3 specializations being a variation of melee DPS, you really have to learn what you’re doing and accept any limitations you have. That said, the class fantasy, the stealth, even in combat? Rogues have their own appeals. But how did this class change in Midnight? Let’s take a look at the most important updates.
Assassination:
- Indiscriminate Carnage - this used to be a big AoE bleed spread tool. Midnight moved Assassination away from stealth-based spreading.
- Serrated Bone Spike – Removed. You lose a fast, flexible damage button that helped front-load pressure, which contributes to the spec feeling weaker in short pulls and lower keys where enemies die before your damage ramps.
- Crimson Tempest (Finisher) – Removed. The finisher version no longer exists, reducing early AoE payoff and reinforcing the spec’s identity as a ramp-based sustained AoE spec rather than a quick burst AoE spec.
- Improved Shiv – Removed. Shiv is no longer intended as a rotational button, so the talents tied to it were cut.
- Cold Blood – Reworked into a passive. You lose an on-demand burst button, which keeps the spec’s damage profile steadier and more incremental rather than cooldown-stacked.
- Crimson Tempest – Added and reworked as a combo point generator that spreads bleeds.
- Regicide’s Reward – Added. This empowers Kingsbane and pushes it into a more central role.
- Finish the Job – Added. This gives Deathmark a generic damage buff so it stays valuable in AoE.
Outlaw:
- Count the Odds – Removed. This talent used to add extra damage through random buffs during combat.
- Crackshot – Removed. This talent previously boosted damage during specific ability windows, giving Outlaw stronger burst opportunities.
- Underhanded Upper Hand – Removed. This talent helped amplify certain combo and buff interactions.
- Deadly Pursuit – Added. This ability improves Outlaw’s ability to stay on target and maintain uptime.
- Fast Action – Added. This ability speeds up parts of the rotation and helps maintain Outlaw’s fast-paced playstyle.
- Preparation – Added. This ability resets the cooldowns of key Rogue utility abilities, letting you reuse tools like mobility or defensive abilities during the same fight.
Subtlety:
- Ancient Arts (Apex) – Added. This talent improves Subtlety’s burst damage windows, reinforcing the spec’s identity as a cooldown-driven damage dealer.
- Mass Casualty (Deathstalker) – Added. This ability enhances Subtlety’s burst AoE potential, which aligns with the spec’s current strength in Midnight.
- Clever Combatant (Trickster) – Added. This talent improves damage interactions during Subtlety’s combo-heavy rotations.
- Flagellation – Removed. This removes one of Subtlety’s previous burst modifiers.
- Symbols of Death – Removed. This ability used to act as a damage amplifier.
- Rupture – Removed. This removes part of the bleed-based damage that Subtlety previously used.
- Supercharger, Shadowcraft, Planned Execution, and Warning Signs – Changed.
- Shadow Blades – Changed. This cooldown now doubles combo point generation from your generators.
- Danse Macabre – Changed. This ability now deals Shadow damage.
- Secret Technique – Changed. This ability now has a fixed 25-second cooldown that can be reduced by haste.
- Shadow Dance – Changed. Shadow Dance now has a fixed 20-second cooldown.
- Deepening Shadows – Changed. This talent now increases the duration of Shadow Dance based on haste.
- Cold Blooded Killer – Changed. This ability is now a passive effect instead of an active button.
- Nimble Flurry – Changed. This talent now cleaves from Unseen Blade and Coup de Grace.
Rogue Midnight Overview

Rogue is a melee DPS class that wears leather armor and uses Combo Points as its unique resource. While all 3 specs are pretty different, and I will explain each of them in the “how to play” section, Rogue’s class fantasy includes on-demand invisibility, dealing damage over time through poisons, bleeds, and other kinds of not-so-fair methods of winning. What’s special about Rogue’s invisibility is that, unlike other classes who can go invisible but have to meet specific conditions for it, Rogues can do it even mid-combat to escape or reset aggro, and they can even apply the party-wide invisibility, which can be especially useful in speedrunning dungeons in Mythic+.
This, obviously, makes Rogues hard to kill, which is not the same as saying that they’re durable, which they’re not. Besides the invisibility, I’d like to highlight some of the other cool utilities that you will have access to as a rogue.
First of all, you got Pick Pocket and Pick Lock, both of which are very classic Rogue abilities that will come in handy not only in the open world but also in dungeons. Only rogues can run around the dungeon in full stealth and open chests for free loot!
Besides those two, you have things like Atrophic Poison, which is a buff for your Rogue’s weapon that, when it attacks the target, makes them deal less damage. Cheat Death is another classic and unique mechanic that will save you from dying. Feint is another defensive skill that gives you a lot of damage reduction. Evasion and Cloak of Shadows provide full immunity against direct physical and magical attacks.
Rogue Pros & Cons
So, should you main Rogues or make a Rogue alt to level up in Midnight? Given its unique playstyle, I’d say go for it, but don’t take my word for it either. Here are 3 pros and 3 cons that will help you make the right decision.
Pros
- Great single-target, AoE, though cleave and DoTs, and priority damage. Every spec is its own DPS flavor, but they all deal an impressive amount of damage in their own way.
- Complexity varies per spec - generally Rogues have simple rotations, easy to play and focus on dodging boss mechanics, but Outlaw spec has way more buttons, therefore more fun to play.
- High mobility and great utility abilities - it’s not easy to die as a Rogue in a raid or a dungeon, and not just because of stealth, but also because of all of those damage mitigation abilities you have.
Cons
- All 3 specs are melee DPS - you'd better enjoy this type of gameplay because this class has nothing else to offer.
- Longer ramp-up and weak damage outside of cooldowns are something that plagues all Rogue specs. Sure, you have bursty combos, but you can use them like every 90 seconds.
- You can’t take a hit - if Rogue gets caught without having his defensive cooldowns, he won’t stay alive for long and fold quickly.
In all seriousness, I would say that Rogue is a very specific class that may lack variety and role diversity but makes up for it with fun gameplay and a unique playstyle. I’d pick it just to learn it and see what it can do.
How to Play Rogue in Midnight
Despite the fact that each Rogue spec is a melee FPS, they all play differently, prioritizing different types of targets. In this section, I’ll walk you through the playstyle of every spec and talk about its unique features.
Assassination Playstyle
Assassination spec focuses on damage over time effects like Poisons and Bleeds. Like every other spec, its special resource is combo points, which you accumulate to then spend on big-damage abilities. But just because your rotations revolve around this resource, it doesn’t mean you can forget all about Energy, a basic resource. If you keep spamming the same button to get combo points, you’ll run out of Energy pretty fast and won’t be able to use anything! Before I go over Assa Rogue’s main abilities and cooldowns, I want to start with poisons, which you NEED TO APPLY TO YOUR WEAPONS BEFORE COMBAT.
- Deadly Poison - for damage
- Crippling Poison - for crowd control
Now, to build your combo points, use: Mutilate, Garrote, and Fan of Knives or Crimson Tempest for AoE. You will generally spend your combo points on Envenom for raw damage, but not before you put Rupture on your target.
As for offensive cooldowns, you have:
- Deathmark - a debuff that boosts your damage and doubles the poison you apply.
- Kingsbane - a DoT that deals more damage the more Lethal Poison procs, stacking up to 50 times.
For hero talents, you have the choice between Deathstalker and Fatebound. The latter revolves around passive damage bonuses through the Fatebound Coins system. While the other hero talent tree has Deathstalker’s Mark, which you can put on a target, and it will deal damage every time you use a finisher move, of which Rogue has several.
Outlaw Rogue Playstyle
Unlike other Rogue specs, Outlaw can equip any one-handed weapons besides Daggers in its main hand. Another unique trait is a more complex and interactive rotation with no waiting to build up a resource or other downtime. At the same time, you must always stay on target due to Restless Blades, which increases your damage output by shortening the cooldown of a lot of your abilities by 1 second per combat point. Without it, your damage will fall short.
Your main combo point builders are:
- Sinister Strike and Pistol Shot, especially when you get 40% chance for the shot to cost less Energy.
Finishing Moves are Dispatch and Between the Eyes, both of which are pretty straightforward.
What is less straightforward is the Roll the Bones ability, which gives you one of 4 random buffs:
- One of a Kind - adds 25% chance to gain Opportunity
- Double Trouble - adds more combo point generation
- Tripple Threat - adds 40% bonus to Restless Blades
- Jackpot - adds 15% increased critical strike chance
The higher the buff, the better. This means that you will always want to reroll One of a Kind.
Your offensive cooldowns include:
- Adrenaline Rush - increases energy generation so you can use more abilities.
- Blade Flurry - a simple buff that makes all of your abilities cleave, making them AoE.
For the choice of hero talents, you have the familiar Fatebound and Trickster. Unlike Assassination’s Fatebound, for Outlaws, the Deal Fate talent makes Sinister Strike generate only 1 additional combo point. Trickster has Unseen Blade that makes your Sinister Strike and Ambush deal more damage, and Coup de Grace that upgrades your Dispatch finisher to deal damage as if it consumes 4 extra combo points.
Subtlety Rogue Playstyle
This spec is all about using shadow damage and clones with bursty single-target damage. This is one of the two easiest specs in the game, but unlike Assassination, it is anything but slow. However, just like Outlaw, you want to keep yourself next to the target because using auto-attacks is how you build up energy and combo points thanks to Shadow Techniques.
Main abilities to build combo points are:
You will spend combo points on:
- Eviscerate
- Black Powder
- Secret Technique (when in burst mode)
The source of your burst mode is Shadow Dance, which buffs your damage and also lets you use those abilities that require stealth. Shadow Blades has a longer cooldown, doubles the amount of combo points you generate, and also makes your damage become Shadow damage, which bypasses the target's armor.
The two hero talent trees you can choose between are the Deathstalker, which adds the Mark just like for the other spec, and Trickster, with a bunch of passive buffs that were streamlined in Midnight.

Rogue Stat Priority
Rogues use Agility as their primary stat across all three specializations. It directly increases Attack Power, which scales the damage of all Rogue abilities. When gearing, item level upgrades should usually come first. Once gear levels stabilize, secondary stats become more important for optimizing performance. The table below shows the general stat priority for each Rogue specialization in Midnight Season 1.

Versatility |
Assassination focuses on Agility for overall damage scaling, while Critical Strike is especially valuable because Seal Fate can generate additional Combo Points on crits. Haste improves energy flow and speeds up poison and bleed ticks, making the rotation smoother. Mastery boosts poison and bleed damage through Potent Assassin, while Versatility provides a smaller universal damage increase.
Outlaw prioritizes Agility first, then stacks Haste to around 25% to speed up energy regeneration, reduce global cooldowns, and improve Adrenaline Rush uptime. Critical Strike slightly outperforms Versatility for most builds due to its direct damage scaling, while Mastery mainly increases the damage of Main Gauche procs and is therefore the lowest priority.
Subtlety strongly favors Agility and Mastery, since Mastery increases the damage of many shadow-based abilities and cleave effects. Haste is valuable up to roughly 18% to fit more actions inside Shadow Dance windows. Critical Strike helps improve single-target burst damage, while Versatility remains the lowest priority as a general damage increase.
Best Rogue Builds for Midnight
Each Rogue spec plays differently and has its own unique mechanics. Every one of these 3 builds that I chose for you capitalizes on those unique traits. These are the 3 best talent builds for Rogues in Midnight that you can import and enjoy right now, no matter the level.
Assassination Fatebound Single-Target Raid Build

Link: CMQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYmZMbzgBAAAAAmtBbzAAAAAAy2MzMzMzYMzMzsNz2MzMYMzMzYmxwAYgFYGjGzGILDYzAgZmxYA
Even though there are a lot of options for viable raid builds, they all focus either on AoE or single-target damage, and trying to go for the middle-ground is never a good idea. This particular build is a single-target-oriented one. If you want at least some AoE options, you can switch Doomblade with Crimson Tempest and Lethal Dose with Caustic Spatter. You’re going to want to replace these specifically because they’re pretty weak for single-target.
Outlaw Fatebound M+ Build

Link: CQQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAgx2MGzMzMzsNzMzYmHYmFGmx0ygtZAAAAAAz22MzMMzMzMmZmtBAAAgBwAbwMGNmNAbTYhBAzMDM
The difference between raid and m+ builds for Outlaw Rogues lies in swapping some of the talents. Primarily, you want to get Deft Maneuvers, which lets you spam Blade Flurry even more, thanks to it generating more combo points. Another pick is the Dancing Steel, which you take instead of Preparation. Don’t forget to grab Thistle Tea at the end of the tree for quick Energy restoration.
Subtlety Trickster Raid Build

Link: CUQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAgx2MAAAAAwsMGLTMbbjxMjZwDMzMzYMbjZGbbzMzMzMjBjZ2GAAAAGMGwY2MMwAziWoFbYGwMDmxA
Trickster is the superior hero talent tree for this spec in all types of damage and content. This particular build focuses on single-target damage but can also be adjusted to do more AoE. If you want that, grab Porent Powder, The First Dance, and Unbreakable Stride, replacing Weaponmaster, Veiltouched, and Iron Stomach respectively.
Rogue Best in Slot Gear in Midnight
This section is “Work in Progress”. I need a bit more time to come up with the list of BiS gear for each spec that isn’t just another copy of the Pre-Patch BiS. Stay Tuned!
Best Rogue Professions

There aren’t any professions that Rogues must have. The most useful options include:
- Leatherworking – Lets you craft your own leather armor pieces. Early crafted gear can be very strong and often stays competitive with raid or dungeon gear for a while.
- Alchemy – Allows you to craft your own flasks and potions. This helps you stay prepared for raids and Mythic+ while saving gold on consumables.
- Enchanting – Lets you enchant your own gear upgrades instead of buying enchants from the Auction House. This becomes especially valuable early in an expansion when enchant prices are high.
The start of an expansion is also the most profitable time for crafting professions. Crafted gear and consumables usually sell for very high prices, allowing you to either gear up quickly or earn enough gold to support the rest of the season.
Best Consumables for Rogue
All three Rogue specs share most of the same core consumables in Midnight Season 1. Assassination leans Critical Strike and Haste, Outlaw often wants Haste to hit its 25% breakpoint, and Subtlety can swap flasks and even potion choices depending on gear and encounter type. Here’s a unified list of consumables that work well across Assassination, Outlaw, and Subtlety in Season 1:
- Combat potion: Light’s Potential / Draught of Rampant Abandon / Potion of Recklessness - Light’s Potential is the default combat potion for all three specs, Draught of Rampant Abandon is the technically best option for Subtlety but is harder to use due to the void pools it spawns, and Potion of Recklessness can be a situational alternative for Assassination depending on your current Crit and diminishing returns.
- Health potion: Silvermoon Health Potion - The standard emergency heal for every Rogue spec in all PvE content.
- Weapon buff: Thalassian Phoenix Oil - The best weapon oil for Rogues, applied to both weapons for all specs.
- Augment rune: Void-Touched Augment Rune - Best rune for all Rogues, but usually saved for progression pulls and higher keys due to cost.
- Flask: Flask of the Shattered Sun / Flask of the Blood Knights / Flask of the Magisters - Shattered Sun is the main pick for Assassination and a common choice for Outlaw and Subtlety, Blood Knights is specifically valuable for Outlaw when you need Haste to reach the 25% breakpoint, and Magisters is the main alternative for Subtlety depending on your current stat spread.
- Food: Silvermoon Parade / Harandar Celebration / Blooming Feast / Crimson Calamari - Silvermoon Parade is the common Assassination feast for Agility, Harandar Celebration is the main Outlaw feast pick, Blooming Feast is the primary Subtlety feast option, and Crimson Calamari is a strong personal food option for Subtlety when secondary stats matter more than feast Agility.
Consumables are optional in casual content and low keys. Once you push higher Mythic+ or do serious raiding, they become the expected baseline for performance and consistency.
