What's New in Midnight PvP

Let’s start with the fun stuff and talk about the new things that Midnight brought to PvP, all while trying to avoid awkwardly mentioning the addons that are now useless. As of pre-season and Season 1, it looks like PvP isn’t the focus of the expansion, although we do get a whole bunch of unique rewards that we’ve all come to expect. So, what’s really new?

Training Grounds

For those looking to get into instanced player vs player activities, you can now actually learn how things work by visiting the brand-new Training Grounds mode. In this mode, you’ll join a team of players and will play one of 3 battlegrounds against a team of AI bots. Which means, you’ll be able to learn how each BG works and what you need to do without risking letting your team down in a real BG against other players. Training Grounds mode is available from the PvP Group Finder, and you can either choose a random BG or a specific one:

  • The Battle for Gilneas
  • Silvershard Mines
  • Arathi Basin

There’s no reason to join those before reaching the max level 90, because you would be wasting a lot of time trying to queue. But as soon as you hit level 90, you’ll be able to pick up a quest called Early Morning Training that tasks you to complete 3 Training Grounds BGs and reward you with a Hero track (ilvl 259) ring or a necklace slot item of your choosing. It’s a pretty good quest that will introduce you to the basics and give you that much-needed gear that will help you in real BGs.

New Battleground: Slayer’s Rise

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a new large-scale, 40vs40 battleground, and Slayer’s Rise, located in the Voidstorm, is just that. Designed in the same style as Alterac Valley and Isle of Conquest, this map includes several main and optional objectives.

Each team spawns on the opposite side of the map in Hate Spire or Grief Spire, respectively. Other points of interest serve as additional map objectives. For example, Shenzar Refinery is a point that can be captured to activate the weapons of war that will damage the home base of the enemy team.

The objective is to push the lane and destroy key NPCs on the way to the enemy base. The Take Flight buff that you can get from various black holes around the zone will help you get around the map faster. The map also features neutral NPC camps like Wardens of Grief, which, when captured, will help you defend and push the lane.

Slayer’s Rise objectives:

  • Attack and defeat NPC’s at Bastion of Might or Bastion of Valor.
  • Defend Stareater Pavilion and Shadow Ridge Outpost from being destroyed.
  • (Optional) Hire Griefspine Ultradon or Kronus to help with the attack
  • Defeat the Domanaar leader: Vidious <Domanaar of Grief> or Ziadan <Domanaar of Hate>.

The map itself isn’t empty either; it will host weekly PvP events, its own faction called Slayer’s Duellum, and rewards tied to its reputation.

Midnight PvP Currency and Schedule

Honor is still the primary currency for all things PvP, and your lifetime Honor Level, along with the rewards remain unchanged. Bloody Tokens earned through War Mode (open-world PvP) are also back. What’s different is the currency cap and the list of rewards available. Let’s start with the currency availability and important dates:

Starting March 2nd (Midnight release)

  • Honor cap is set to 15,000 per character in Warband.
  • Honor gear is available at the quartermaster in Silvermoon City
  • Conquest gear is not available until Season 1
  • Warband honor is not transferable.

Starting March 17 (Season 1)

  • Warband Honor is transferable
  • Conquest currency and gear become obtainable
  • Conquest honor cap is set to 1600 with 800 increments each week. (week 2: 2200, week 3: 3000, etc.)
  • Bloody Tokens are obtainable with the cap set to 1600, and 800 increments each week
  • War Mode gear is accessible

So, what this basically means is that during the pre-season period (March 2-16) you don’t need to engage in PvP too much. Everyone will be leveling their main and alt characters. If you want to know more about that, check out my leveling guide. The honor gear is available at level 90 anyway, and it gives you ilvl 217. When Season 1 hits, that’s when you can start farming your Honor, Conquest, or War Mode gear more.

Midnight PvP Rewards and Gear

This is the most exciting part and the only thing that is actually new besides the added BG map and the Training Grounds. The following list contains rewards from Season 1 and will be updated to showcase the most current rewards.

PvP Gear and Vendors

You can find your PvP gear vendors in Silvermoon City, Falconwing Square:

Each type of PvP gear offers a different ilvl:

  • Crafted PvP Gear - ilvl 263-289, aka Champion-Mythic track
  • War Mode Gear - ilvl 276 aka Hero track
  • Honor Gear - ilvl 276 aka Hero track
  • Conquest Gear - ilvl 289 aka Mythic track

As you can see, PvP gearing is a valid way to get the current highest ilvl in the game, so PvP fans will not be missing out on character progression by not doing any PvE activities.

Season 1 PvP Mounts

In Season 1, you can earn 2 mounts tied to achievements:

The Snaplizard has two color variations depending on your faction. It is also a ground mount, while the Goredrake is a flying mount.
