  • Use leveling events like Winds of Mysterious Fortune, Turbulent Timeways, and Timewalking Weekly Bonus Event to get to 80 and access Midnight story and zones.
  • Go from level 80 to 90 by leveling in the Midnight Zones: Eversong Woods, Harandar, Zul’Aman, and Voidstorm.

How Leveling Works in WoW Midnight

Any WoW player will tell you that the modern leveling experience is trivialized to the point of being a background system. It no longer feels like your character’s power grows - that is reserved for the last 10-15 levels when you unlock your hero talents. So, in this guide, I want to just help you make sense of how retail WoW leveling works. But before I do, know that 90% of it is already too fast. The real progression is the new 10 levels that you gain by leveling in Midnight zones. Here’s how retail WoW leveling is structured:

  • Levels 1-10 - Exile’s Reach or race-unique starting zone
  • Levels 10-80 - Leveling through the previous expansion (recommended) or leveling through Timewalking with Chromie Time.
  • Levels 80-90 - Leveling in Midnight zones (current content).

What this means is, besides the last 10 levels, you have options for how and where you level up.

But I need to make a few remarks. First of all, allied races start with level 10 automatically, thus skipping the tutorial island. They all start in their unique locations that bring you up to speed, after which, you’re almost immediately sent to the expansion where you’ll level up all the way up to level 80.

Secondly, at any point of leveling, until you hit level 80, you can come to Chromie, who is found by your capital’s embassy, and choose to level up in any of the previous expansions. When you do that, all content in that expansion will be scaled to your current level, and you will be able to follow its main story to get to level 80.

At least that’s how it's supposed to work, but there are some bugs with level scaling.

Finally, when you get to Midnight and start following the campaign, after a few starter quests, you’ll have the option to choose between one of four locations. You’ll endup doing them all, but you do get to choose which one you visit first.

How to Skip Leveling Completely

When you create your character, you have the option to apply the 80-level character boost, which immediately levels up your character to that level. You are one such boost that you can apply to one character. Here’s how it works:

  1. Click on the “Enhanced Level 80 Character Boost” on the character selection screen
  2. Choose the character from the list or create a new one
  3. Select one of the specializations (you can switch them later)
  4. Click “Level Up”

That’s it! Congratulations, you now have a max-level character. This option actually also includes a bunch of other benefits, like the maxed reputation ranks, mounts, starter gear, etc.

Alternatively, you can start with the character Trial, which gives you a level 70 character for a few hours, after which you must use the boost on them to keep playing.

Getting Level 80 Fast for Midnight

If you think that the largest level gap that you have to go through will take you months, you’re wrong. I was able to get level 80 in just a few days when I played about 2-3 hours after work. But my leveling is going to be different than yours for a few reasons. One of those reasons is leveling a new character at the right time. The developers know that from time to time, players create new characters, and nobody wants to spend too much time leveling alts up. That’s why we have events that provide bonus XP, such as Winds of Mysterious Fortune, Turbulent Timeways, Timewalking Weekly Bonus Event, and others.

Leveling During Pre-Patch

Leading up to the release of Midnight, the pre-patch is a period that’s best for leveling up characters. This is when you can get decent ilvl gear, and the Winds of Mysterious Fortune runs in parallel. I’ve dedicated a few guides to the pre-patch, namely the leveling and gearing guides. In short, pre-patch introduces a unique event called “Twilight Ascension,” where all you have to do is kill rare mobs with other players to get currency, which you then exchange for level 80 gear.

Winds of Mysterious Fortune

Just to be clear - this event isn’t exclusive to pre-patches, it runs whenever the devs decide to turn it back on. I strongly believe that this event has been made specifically for new players, as it gives you more than just a level bonus. So, how does this work?

First off, there’s a buff buff that applies to all characters who haven’t hit max level. This buff gives you a 20% bonus to experience gain, which, when paired with Bottle of Mysterious Wisdom - an event-unique consumable gives you a total of +30% to all experience you get. That, I would say, is what made me level up so quickly during the Pre-Patch.

Besides the XP bonus, during this event, your non-max-level characters will randomly loot a Weathered Mysterious Satchel that comes in 3 rarities: green, blue, and purple. When you open the satchel, it gives you a number of random items. The best thing you can get out of this satchel is the gear that will be the best in slot for your current level. This gear also has a unique design, but most of all, it makes you forget about gearing up as you’re going through levels.

Turbulent Timeways

This is another event that increases XP gain but in a more specific way - by doing older content, scaled to your level.

Every week of Turbulent Timeways, there’s an active Timewalking Weekly Event that increases your XP for completing specific Timewalking Dungeons. This version of old dungeons makes all monsters and bosses scale to your current level.

After you’ve completed a Timewalking Dungeon, you get a 2-hour +5% XP bonus buff called Knowledge of Timeways. But if you complete 3 more Timewalking Dungeons, this buff will become Mastery of Timeways, which gives you +30% XP bonus.

There’s a bunch more rewards for doing this event, but as far as leveling goes, that extra 30% to leveling is how you get to max level as fast as possible.

Leveling from 80 to 90 in Midnight

Once you hit level 80 by any means necessary, you’ll be able to start the Midnight story and progress through the new zones to reach the max level 90. This last stretch of 10 levels is the truest leveling experience as most MMORPG players expect - there are no XP bonuses, and main story quests don’t give you enough XP to hit the next level. You’ll have to do side quests, dungeons, and other activities to hit that max level.

This path is rather straightforward, too. You have to see these last 10 levels as a way to unlock endgame systems of Midnight that you will be interacting with once you hit level 90. So, the best advice here is to not skip any important quests, even if they’re not main story related.

The campaign gates major features such as:

  • Weekly content
  • World quests / Special Assignments
  • The Prey system
  • Stormarion Assault
  • …more

So, don’t just speedrun through the story. If you skip something or half-finish it, you’ll have to come back and do those quests.

Midnight Leveling Zones

The Midnight campaign will take you through 4 major zones, not all of which are brand-new. As I said earlier, you will have the freedom to choose the order in which you complete these zones that serve as chapters of the leveling campaign. Here’s a short breakdown of each leveling zone.

Eversong Woods

As you may know, Silvermoon City and Eversong Woods are both part of Quel’Thalas. These locations have been updated and now serve as the expansion’s hub.

In Eversong Woods, you’ll be completing quests to help Arator to deal with the recent challenges that the zone is facing. Quel’Thalas includes 2 dungeons and 3 delves that you could visit for some extra XP.

Harandar

The homeland of the new allied race, Haranir, where you’ll help Orweyna and her people. Harandar includes the Legends of the Haranir zone, the Blinding Vale dungeon, the Dreamrift raid, and Thorm’belan world boss.

Zul’Aman

Zul’Aman is another updated old zone and the home of Amani trolls. It features Loa temples, the settlement Atal’Aman, and 2 zones - Den of Nalorakk, and Maisara Caverns. Besides that, there are 3 delves here: The Darkway, Twilight Crypts, and Atal'Aman.

Voidstorm

The final zone of the campaign is brand-new. It contains the Howling Ridge that serves as a hub and a bunch of sub-zones like Stormarion Citadel, Locus Point, Obscured Citadel, Masters Perch, Grief Spire, and others.

This is where you will likely reach max level 90 before returning to Silvermoon City to officially enter the endgame.
