Is It Too Late to Gear Up During the Pre-Patch?

It is not too late to gear up during the Midnight Pre-Patch, but it is important to understand what that gearing actually gets you. The pre-patch is not designed to push characters to the highest possible item level before Midnight. Instead, it functions as a catch-up window for players who are returning, leveling fresh characters, or playing boosted alts.

Most of the strongest gearing systems from The War Within Season 3 are already ending or fully closed when the pre-patch begins. There is no new season, no new raid tier, and no active Mythic Plus or PvP progression that allows long-term power growth. Because of this, chasing maximum item level during the pre-patch does not make sense for players who are already well geared.

What the Midnight Pre Patch gearing offers is a reliable way to get your character’s power level up to par. It allows undergeared characters to replace outdated items with consistent, upgradeable gear that is strong enough for early Midnight leveling and open-world content. This gear will not rival Heroic or Mythic Season 3 gear, but it will remain fully usable once Midnight launches.

The Midnight Pre-Patch mainly benefits three types of players:

• Returning players who skipped most or all of Season 3
• Newly leveled or boosted characters with weak gear
• Alt characters that need a quick power baseline before Midnight

For players who stayed current throughout Season 3, the pre-patch is a transition period rather than a progression phase. Many of the strongest gearing paths are already gone or becoming unavailable, and the remaining options are intentionally capped. The next sections of this Midnight Prepatch gear guide break down what gear you can still obtain, which methods are already gone, and where each option fits in your preparation for Midnight.

Catch Up on Gear With Twilight Ascension Event

If you’ve heard about the traditional pre-patch event, here’s all you need to know about how to gear up before Midnight WoW.

The Twilight Ascension event is the primary gearing system of the Midnight Pre-Patch. You’ll find it in the Twilight Highlands, where the Twilight’s Blade cult plans a large-scale invasion. This event is in the game mostly just to help returning players, new players, and boosted or freshly leveled characters reach a stable gear baseline before entering Midnight content.

For players who were active throughout The War Within Season 3, Twilight Ascension is not a progression system. Its purpose is to prevent characters from entering Midnight undergeared and to provide a predictable, low-friction catch-up path that remains usable at launch.

Event Timing and Basic Information

• Start date: January 27, 2026
• End date: March 2, 2026
• Minimum level: 10
• Zone: Twilight Highlands
• Currency: Twilight’s Blade Insignia
• Vendors location: Twilight Highlands, elven resistance camp
• Coordinates: 49.6, 81.2

To access the event, players must complete the introductory questline starting with The Cult Within. Once finished on one character, all Twilight Ascension activities become available warband-wide.

The event offers a full set of Champion-track Midnight Pre-Patch gear catch up with a fixed ceiling. This gear is intended to be strong enough for early Midnight leveling, but it does not compete with high-end Season 3 gear.

The event offers Champion-track catch-up gear with a clearly defined ceiling.

• Base item level: 121
• Upgrade track: Champion (1/8)
• Maximum upgrade: Item level 144
• Gear type: Warbound
• Role: Catch-up and leveling preparation

Item level 144 is equivalent to early Manaforge Omega Normal raid gear. This Midnight Pre Patch Gear is strong enough for early Midnight leveling, but does not replace Hero or Myth track Season 3 gear. BLOG20

How Twilight’s Blade Insignia Is Earned

All gearing during Twilight Ascension revolves around Twilight’s Blade Insignia. This currency is warbound and can be freely transferred between characters.

Weekly quests are warband-wide and can be progressed across multiple characters, allowing fast currency generation for alts to get that Midnight pre-patch ilvl gear.

Rare Events and Gear Drops

Rare events form the backbone of the Twilight Ascension gameplay loop. Every 10 minutes, a Twilight’s Blade ritual begins somewhere in the Twilight Highlands. Players must disrupt the ritual, defeat the shielding ritualists, and then kill the exposed rare enemy.

Rare events can reward:

• Champion-track warbound gear
• Valor Stones
• Resonance Crystals
• Crests
• Twilight’s Blade Insignia

Once per hour, an Ephemeral Void may appear during these events. Completing its sub-objective summons Voice of the Eclipse, an additional rare that drops the same loot, effectively doubling Twilight Ascension gear rewards when it spawns.

Twilight Ascension Vendors

Two vendors handle all event rewards and are located at the Elven Resistance Camp in southern Twilight Highlands.

All catch-up gear sold by Armorer Kalinovan costs 40 Twilight’s Blade Insignia per item. Vendor gear is identical to gear that drops from rare events, making purchases optional rather than mandatory.

Available slots for Catch-Up Gear

The Twilight Ascension event provides full slot coverage, allowing players to gear an entire character without relying on outside systems.

All items use the Ascension Arrestor naming set and are available through both drops and vendor purchases.

Upgrading and Using Event Gear

Twilight Ascension gear can be upgraded along the Champion track using materials earned from the event itself. While it cannot reach Hero or Myth track levels, it provides a reliable baseline for leveling and early outdoor content.

This gear can also be converted using the Catalyst to unlock previous season tier appearances. This is purely cosmetic and does not grant tier bonuses.

The Twilight Ascension event is most valuable for New or returning players entering Midnight and boosted characters with weak or outdated gear. Players already equipped with Heroic or Mythic Season 3 gear, Twilight Ascension offers minimal power gains. Its role is catch-up and transition, not progression.

How to Gear Up Before Midnight Release?

While the Midnight Pre-Patch introduces a clear catch-up system, it is not the strongest way to gear a character before the expansion launches. If there is still time left before Midnight release, several Season 3–era systems continue to offer better gear than the Twilight Ascension event, even though their availability and progression are now limited.

At this stage, gearing before Midnight is about making smart use of what is still active rather than chasing new progression. Many systems no longer reset weekly in a meaningful way, some rewards are capped, and others are already frozen. Even so, these sources remain the best options for players who want to enter Midnight with stronger-than-baseline gear.

Before breaking each method down individually, it helps to understand which gearing paths are still relevant and what role they play.

The following systems can still provide usable gear before Midnight launches, though each comes with restrictions or diminishing returns:

• Weekly Timewalking quest during Turbulent Timeways
• Delves and Nemesis bosses
• Raids from The War Within Season 3
• Mythic Plus dungeons with a frozen season state
• Rated and unrated PvP with no active seasonal progression

These sources do not function equally. Some are clearly superior for raw item level, while others are mainly useful for filling gaps or gearing alts. In general, any Hero-track or Myth-track gear obtained through these methods will outperform pre-patch catch-up gear and remain valuable throughout early Midnight leveling.

In the following sections, we will go through each of these activities one by one, explain what is still available, what has changed, and whether each option is worth wasting time on.

Weekly Timewalking Quest

The Weekly Timewalking quest remains one of the most valuable gearing options available before Midnight launches. While Turbulent Timeways is active, this quest rewards Hero-track gear instead of the usual Champion-track items, placing it above all pre-patch catch-up gear in terms of raw power.

The quest is picked up in Dornogal and requires completing Timewalking dungeons, which scale players down and do not demand high-end gear. This makes the quest accessible even for undergeared or freshly boosted characters, while still offering a reward that holds value well into early Midnight leveling.

During Turbulent Timeways, the Weekly Timewalking quest:

• Rewards Hero-track gear
• Can be completed once per week per character
• Works well for gearing multiple alts in a short time
• Requires no seasonal progression or rating thresholds

Any Hero-track item obtained here will outperform Twilight Ascension gear and significantly reduce leveling friction when Midnight begins. For players who did not finish Season 3 with strong raid or Mythic Plus gear, this is one of the most efficient ways to improve item level before the expansion release.

Delves During Pre-Patch

Delves remain accessible during the Midnight Pre-Patch, but their role in gearing is much more limited than it was earlier in The War Within Season 3. Seasonal progression tied to Delves has ended, and most of their rewards are no longer part of an active progression loop.

That said, Delves can still provide meaningful gear in specific situations. Nemesis bosses can continue to be summoned, and these encounters are still capable of dropping Hero-track gear. This makes Delves one of the few remaining sources outside of raids and Timewalking that can reward items stronger than Twilight Ascension catch-up gear.

What to expect from Delves during the pre-patch:

• Delver’s Journey progression is no longer active
• No new seasonal Delve rewards can be earned
• Nemesis bosses remain available
• Hero-track gear can still drop
• Undercoin currency is not reset and remains usable

Delves are best viewed as an opportunistic gearing option. They are not a reliable or fast way to gear an entire character, but they can be useful for filling individual slots or improving item level if you already engage with Delve content.

For players who actively ran Delves earlier in the season, there is little reason to farm them heavily during the pre-patch. For players who missed out or need specific upgrades, they can still offer value, especially when Hero-track drops line up with weak gear slots.

 

Raid Gearing During Pre-Patch

TWW raids remain accessible during the Midnight Pre-Patch, but they no longer function as an active progression system. With Season 3 effectively over, there is no new raid tier, no weekly progression loop, and no advancement beyond the gear already available.

Despite that, raid gear is still among the strongest options for preparing a character before Midnight. Heroic and Mythic raid items are still better than any gear you can get in that new event that got added.

During the pre-patch, raid gearing looks like this:

• Manaforge Omega remains playable
• Raid loot continues to drop normally
• No new raid tier or difficulty changes
• Ahead of the Curve and Cutting Edge achievements are no longer obtainable

So, if you still can find a raid party, go for it, by all means! Raid gearing during this period favors players who were already raiding before the pre-patch. It is not designed to help undergeared or returning characters catch up, but it remains one of the best ways to enter Midnight with high-quality gear if access is available.

Mythic Plus Gearing During Pre-Patch

M+ is largely frozen during the Midnight Pre-Patch. Season 3 ended with the pre-patch release on January 20th, 2026. There is no replacement season running in its place. As a result, Mythic Plus no longer offers a true progression loop, but it can still provide value in some cases, if you’re that desperate.

Existing M+ dungeons remain playable, and the gear you already earned from Season 3 continues to be some of the strongest preparation gear available. However, there is no new seasonal scaling, no leaderboard progression, and no meaningful incentive to push higher keys during the pre-patch.

What remains relevant during pre-patch:

• Previously earned M+ gear stays fully usable
• No new season or gear reset occurs
• Keystone Master may still be obtainable
• Keystone Legend is no longer available
• No new seasonal rewards or upgrades are introduced

For players who already geared heavily through M+ during Season 3, this gear will also be better than all pre-patch catch-up options and will stay relevant when you get to the Midnight leveling. For players who did not engage with M+ earlier, the pre-patch is not a good time to start, as there is no accelerated or catch-up system attached to it. BLOG20

Mythic Plus during the pre-patch is nothing more than a glorified holdover system rather than something you would want to play day in and day out. Unless, of course, it’s something you enjoy doing. Otherwise, it preserves existing power but does not meaningfully help characters improve beyond what they already have.

PvP Gearing During Pre-Patch

PvP remains playable during the Midnight Pre-Patch, but like Mythic Plus, it no longer operates as an active progression system. The War Within Season 3 PvP season ends before the pre-patch begins, which means there is no new seasonal ladder, no rating-based gear progression, and no elite reward track to pursue.

Players can still queue for PvP and continue earning Honor and Conquest, but the gear available during the pre-patch does not scale beyond what was already obtainable before the season ended. As a result, PvP during this period is primarily about maintaining or finishing existing gear sets rather than upgrading into higher tiers.

During the pre-patch, PvP gearing works as follows:

• Rated and unrated PvP queues remain available
• Honor and Conquest can still be earned
• Elite PvP sets and seasonal rewards are no longer obtainable
• No new PvP gear tiers or item level increases exist

PvP gear earned during Season 3 remains perfectly usable for Midnight leveling, especially for players who already invested heavily into PvP earlier. However, for players starting from low gear, PvP is not an efficient catch-up method during the pre-patch, as it offers no accelerated gearing path compared to Twilight Ascension.

PvP during the Midnight Pre-Patch functions as a maintenance system rather than a gearing solution. It preserves existing power but does not meaningfully improve a character’s readiness beyond what was already earned.

Gearing Methods That Are No Longer Available During Pre-Patch

By the time the Midnight Pre-Patch begins, several gearing systems from The War Within Season 3 are already closed or significantly restricted. This is an important distinction, as many players log in expecting the same weekly progression loops to still exist, only to find that those paths are no longer viable.

The following gearing methods are no longer available or no longer function as true progression systems during the pre-patch.

Seasonal Mythic Plus Progression

• The War Within Season 3 Mythic Plus season has ended
• No new seasonal scaling or weekly progression exists
• Keystone Legend is no longer obtainable
• Leaderboards are frozen
• No new seasonal rewards or item level increases are available

Great Vault Rewards

• The Great Vault no longer provides new gear progression
• No weekly Vault item upgrades are available
• Vault rewards do not reset into a new season during pre-patch

Seasonal PvP Gear Progression

• Rated PvP Season 3 has ended
• Elite PvP armor sets are no longer obtainable
• Gladiator and Legend seasonal rewards are removed
• No new PvP gear tiers or rating-based upgrades exist

Delver’s Journey Seasonal Track

• Delver’s Journey progression has ended
• Seasonal Delve reward tracks can no longer be advanced
• Some guaranteed seasonal rewards are removed
• Delves no longer act as a full gearing progression system

New Raid Progression

• No new raid tier is introduced during pre-patch
• Ahead of the Curve and Cutting Edge achievements are removed
• Raids no longer represent a progression ladder

Expansion-Level Systems

• No level 90 content is available
• Apex talents are not active
• New dungeons and new raid loot pools are not accessible
• No profession-based catch-up gearing is introduced

The Midnight Pre-Patch is intentionally limited in scope when it comes to gearing. Its purpose is to stabilize characters, not to replace a full seasonal progression cycle. This means you already know about the best way to gear alts before Midnight WoW, and it has nothing to do with the regular endgame activities.
