Grand Challenge is no cakewalk. It’s one of the few truly challenging modes of the game with real stakes and great rewards. The biggest difficulty curve comes from the fact that all cards are on equal footing. No matter if your Royal Ghost is level 16 in other normal modes. Here, everyone is on the same level, so you can’t just outstat your opponent. That’s why good Grand Challenge decks are independent and can work no matter the odds. Ideally, they always need an answer to any card thrown at them. Below, I’ll list the best Clash Royale Grand Challenge decks, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t lose with them. It’s Clash Royale after all, and there’s always a bigger fish in the ocean. Nonetheless, these decks give you a very good chance of getting to 12 wins. Here’s what a Grand Challenge deck should have:

At the time of writing an article, there’s a strong Grand Challenge deck that includes Prince and Dark Prince, a classic oppressive deck. For the best aggressive deck in Clash Royale Grand Challenge, you’ll need:

There are a few ways to play Royal Hogs, but I like the classic RH with Hunter and Royal Ghost combo. In my opinion, this is the best deck for Clash Royale Grand Challenge:

  3. Golden Knight
  4. Three Musketeers
  5. Royal Ghost
  6. Hunter
  7. Barb Barrel
  8. Heal Spirit

The idea is always the same: force a response from your opponent, then follow up when their spell or building is out of cycle. Royal Hogs decks are especially good for players who understand split-lane pressure. It’s not a deck you go all in with. The skill of taking your time and waiting for your opponent is super important here. Pro Tip! Put the hogs in the middle of the field and let them split and attack both towers for positive Elixir trades.

Miner Control Decks

Miner Control is a very safe Grand Challenge archetype, but that’s if you know how to play this deck. It severely punishes players who can’t use Miner creatively, so if you’re one of those players who sends Miner to the same tile every single time as a backline chip damager, you won’t capitalize on this deck archetype. This deck is great for:

  • Defensive players
  • Chip damage
  • Counterpush control
  • Beating players who overextend

The strength of Miner decks is that they defend well and chip over time. Giant Skeleton Miner versions are especially good. That’s why below I list the cards for the best Miner deck for Grand Challenge:

Golem is a high-risk, high-reward type of deck cause if your opponent doesn’t expect a Golem, and nobody does most of the time, let’s be real, then you’ll be able to win in just one Golem drop. In theory, the deck works quite simply. You survive, get to double Elixir, build a big push wave, and trample your opponent. This deck will suit you best for these reasons:

  • You like the beatdown playstyle
  • You enjoy Double Elixir chaos
  • You like to feel dominant when breaking through weak defenses
  • You’re a player who knows when not to play Golem

The problem in this deck often lies in the fact that good players know how to deal with Golem, so a surprise factor here is key to victory. If you show your Golem too early, your opponent will expect a big push, and they’ll act accordingly. Even though Golem decks winrate looks quite good, it’s definitely not a safe choice if you want a smooth ride to 12 wins. Here are the cards for the best beatdown deck in Grand Challenge:

Bait Decks

Bait decks are always in the loop and never out of meta, especially in Grand Challenge, because people really tend to waste their small spells for naught. Wall Breakers Bait, Goblin Barrel Bait, and Mortar Bait all work similarly well. You force the opponent to spend Log, Barbarian Barrel, Arrows, or Zap, then delete the tower in a nanosecond. This archetype is enjoyable if you like these things:

  • Spell tracking
  • Lightning-fast pressure
  • Cheap cycle
  • Players who like making opponents defend nonstop

The difference between good and bad bait players is spell tracking. If you don’t know where their small spell is in the cycle, you’re just setting cards and praying. That can work in a ladder. In Grand Challenges, especially near higher wins, people will definitely know how to counter you, so it might be a bit more difficult to reach 12 wins, unless you know how to outsmart them. A strong bait deck in the current Grand Challenge meta looks something like this:

  1. Evo Skeleton Barrel
  2. Hero Goblins
  3. Evo Mortar
  4. Cannon Cart
  5. Fireball
  6. Minions
  7. Rascals
  8. Barbarian Barell

Bait decks are great because they are cheap, have good defense, and have multiple pressure options. They’re not always easy, but they reward matchup knowledge more than many other decks.

Bridge Spam Decks

Bridge Spam is quite a unique archetype since its defense is its offense, and that’s why it’s hard to play against it. Typical cards for Bridge Spam are ones that can quickly kill enemy troops while having enough health to convert it into attack. Bandit, Royal Ghost, EWiz, and Golden Knight are examples of such cards. You’ll enjoy this archetype if you like:

  • Counterpushes
  • Punishing players who cycle poorly
  • Playing from defense while still having pressure
  • Beating ground decks

The upside is that Bridge Spam is a Swiss Army Knife. It can respond to nigh every deck archetype well. P.E.K.K.A is good against tanks. Electro Wizard helps against charge units and air. Bandit and Royal Ghost punish cheapskates with poorly prepared cycles. The downside is that, despite the name, you can’t just spam the bridge and call it a strategy. Against good players, that gets shut down fast. Current meta bridge spam deck for Clash Royale Grand Challenge is:

How to Choose a Grand Challenge Deck

Simply copying the highest winrate deck and expecting 12 wins isn’t the way to complete a Grand Challenge. That’s why I didn’t write the win percentage next to any of the decks like I usually do. In order to win in Grand Challenge, you should pick a deck that fits your playstyle. If you like pressuring the enemy King, use Hero Giant or Royal Hogs. If you like defending and slowly choking the opponent out, use Miner Control. If you like one huge push, use Golem. If you’re good at tracking spells, Bait decks are always worth trying. Here’s a quick way to pick:

  • Newer GC player: Royal Hogs or Hero Giant
  • Defensive player: Miner Control
  • Beatdown player: Golem
  • Fast-cycle player: Bait
  • Counterpush player: Bridge Spam
  • High-skill player: Mortar, X-Bow, or Miner variants

The worst thing you can do is pick a deck because it looks cool on a stats page, then realize by game three that you have no idea how to defend Balloon. Test the deck first in Challenges, friendly battles, or Ranked. Grand Challenges cost Gems, so it’s not wise to use them as your practice room.

Grand Challenge Tips

If it’s your first time in Grand Challenge or you just don’t play this mode often, I’ve prepared a few handy tips that will help you immediately get better than most other players. Check them out:

  • Don’t enter with a deck you barely know
  • Pick a deck that covers many matchups, and don’t rely on the fact that your opponent might not be familiar with your deck
  • Make sure you have air defense and an anti-tank troop
  • Get into the habit of tracking small spells if you play Bait
  • Do not overcommit, but don’t sit on your Elixir as well. Find balance in your deck
  • Save your best punish push for when the opponent is out of cycle
  • If you lose two games in a row, stop and come back later. Tilt in Grand Challenge is a quick way to lose
  • On the contrary, if you’re in a flow state, don’t let a few defeats stop you
  • Update your deck after balance changes, but stick to the same deck-building rules

Following these tips will save you a lot of frustration. I had to figure it out on my own back when Clash Royale just added this mode, but now I’d say I’m pretty successful and get to 12 wins quite frequently, unless I don’t really vibe with the meta.
