Before I dive into explaining what Evo cards I ranked as the best, let’s clarify the tiers. Cards in, say, C-tier are not necessarily among the worst cards in the game. They might be just out of meta currently, or slowly but surely returning to it. Rating the top Evolution cards in Clash Royale is not that straightforward, as most cards have some use. Only a few examples in this list are objectively bad cards that you shouldn’t pick. Take a look at our explanation of ranks:
- S-Tier: Absolutely broken cards and cards that never go out of meta
- A-Tier: Meta cards, working well, and cards that are highly unlikely to get out of meta soon
- B-Tier: Strong cards that are returning to the meta or are outperformed by others
- C-Tier: Cards that are fine, but either not in meta, or their meta might be returning
- D-Tier: Cards heavily reliant on meta sways and not returning to it anytime soon
As you can see, lower-tier cards are usually the cards that rely on the meta too much. Cards like these are often nerfed or buffed because they are poorly balanced. Now that I cleared that up, let’s move on to our ranking.

The best cards in Clash Royale are usually the ones that stay relevant independent of the meta. It’s usually the case of the features the card already has. Some are generally strong because of their kit, and it’s very hard to nerf the kit without reworks. Here, I have ranked all 38 possible Evolutions in the game. Before getting angry that I have placed your favorite card so low, read our explanation! Maybe you would even agree with our point after reading it. Here’s our Clash Royale Evo cards tier ranking explained.
S-Tier
Best cards to use in the current meta. Include them in your decks if possible.
- Royal Ghost: The must-upgrade Evo and it’s not even close. Ridiculous value in basically every archetype, plus an insane 19% usage rate.
- Skeleton Barrel: The definition of “guaranteed value”. Even when you defend it right, the damage they deal when dying leaves your troop with only part of their HP.
- Giant Snowball: Knockback plus slowdown is disgusting. It farms extra hits in decks like Drill, Balloon, and Giant Graveyard, and people are abusing it hard. Honestly everytime I see a Giant Snowball, I want to pull my hair out.
- Zap: Two Elixir, and it does everything. Deletes annoying supports, resets, defends, attacks, and still sits around a 10% usage rate. Any group of mobs just disappears from the arena like it never was.
- Royal Hogs: The flying mechanic plus landing damage makes defense feel awkward every time. Pair it with Earthquake, and buildings basically stop existing.
- Skeleton Army: Nerfed or not, it still wins games off one bad spell cycle. It’s a bait deck nightmare and forces super-specific answers.
- Tesla: Stun, reset, pulse value, underground safety, all in one slot. If you want safe defense that always works, this is it.
- Inferno Dragon: Tanks just evaporate if they misplace anything. It’s loved for a reason, with around 11% usage because it counters popular decks.
- Royal Giant: Months of dominance because it’s stupidly consistent. Knockback adds defensive utility, and it pairs perfectly with Lightning, Fisherman, and obviously Royal Ghost.
- Valkyrie: Defensive monster, simple as that. Huge use rate around 13% because she hard counters Royal Hogs and stabilizes games.
You really can’t go wrong with these cards. Building a deck around them will win you many matches.
A-Tier
These cards are super strong, though not OP. They are probably the safest to Evo, as they won’t be hit with nerfs first.
- Cannon: The most consistent defensive building in the game. Cheap, flexible, and it fits into basically anything that wants clean defense.
- Wall Breakers: Still feels illegal after multiple nerfs. A two Elixir that forces ugly defenses and rarely gives opponents a clean positive trade.
- Goblin Drill: Finally, not a meme Evo anymore. The recent buff gave it real pressure again, sitting around 6% use with a 50% win rate.
- Baby Dragon: Still very strong in Lavaloon, Golem, and Graveyard. It’s just not “plug it anywhere and auto win” anymore, which is good.
- Executioner: If you place it right, pushes just collapse. Hog X-Nado and Graveyard Freeze love it, and Heroes being popular only makes it better.
- Furnace: Annoying last season, still annoying now. The recent buff helped, and the 6% use rate shows it’s still a real option.
- Archers: Absolute monster in X-Bow. Outside X-Bow, it’s basically homeless, and that niche keeps it down.

B-Tier
These cards can provide great support to your top cards. On their own, they’re not as great, though.
- Battle Ram: Fell off because the meta got too fast and too toxic for bridge spam lines. Use rate dropped from 7% to about 4%, and it might keep sliding.
- Witch: One of the most frustrating Evos to face right now. Spells barely matter unless you have Lightning, and the “nerf” didn’t fix the core problem.
- P.E.K.K.A: The heal-per-kill buff finally made her feel tanky again. The only reason she isn’t higher is Hero Goblins existing to ruin her life.
- Barbarians: Back because Lavaloon made ground defense valuable again. They did great in Royal Giant, Royal Hogs, and Graveyard, but there’s a better ground Evo choice.
- Firecracker: Deck-locked into Hog lists, and that’s it. Inside Hog, she’s pure annoyance and chip, but Arrows still deletes her instantly.
- Mega Knight: It still crushes Beatdown, sure. But it feels worse than the normal Mega Knight because air, control, and fast cycle make it look meh.
- Musketeer: High skill Evo that got its spot stolen by Hero Musketeer. With Hero Musketeer getting nerfed, this one might finally get picked again.
They’re still good investments, but here I suggest being a bit more cautious.
C-Tier
These cards are very situational. Some of them are just outmatched by other cards present in the game. Others are just not good. Think three times before upgrading them.
- Skeletons: Fine if your deck has no better Evo slot. Hero Goblins are so broken that running both often feels pointless.
- Mortar: One of the most reliable Evos, but it’s in a rough spot. Nerfs to Hero Knight and Hero Musketeer dragged the whole Mortar package down.
- Goblin Cage: Feels great into tanks like Golem or Mega Knight. Into air or fast cycle, it doesn’t give enough extra value over the normal Cage.
- Bomber: Had a moment in Giant decks, then the meta moved on, and spells started farming it. Now it sits around 2% use and feels unreliable.
- Goblin Barrel: Meta is packed with Log, Arrows, and Barbarian Barrel. If your opponent is good, you’re basically paying three elixir to watch goblins vanish.
- Wizard: Not “weak,” just irrelevant now. Hero Wizard got buffed and is simply the better pick, so the Evo got pushed out.
- Royal Recruits: They just cannot live in this splash and spell-heavy meta. Around 1% usage is the game politely begging you to stop.
Evolve these cards only if you have no other option, and even then, I'd suggest waiting til you get something better.
D-Tier
Do not upgrade these cards, even for the memes. You’re just wasting your precious resources. We doubt that they’ll ever see a return in the meta soon.
- Electro Dragon: The most coin flip Evo in the game. It stomps Beatdown without Lightning, but Cycle decks bully it, with under 1% use and around 49% win rate.
- Lumberjack: Swarms are everywhere, so it gets countered for free. You’ll see it in a few Giant lists, and nowhere else.
- Bats: Outclassed by Minions in most situations. Add Hero Mega Minion plus cheap spells everywhere, and they die instantly.
- Hunter: Only shows up with Royal Giant, and even then, it loses the Evo slot war. Losing the permanent immobilizing effect was basically the death of it.
- Ice Spirit: Freeze duration nerf double-nerfed the Evo because it freezes twice. Defensive value dropped hard, and it feels underwhelming now.
- Knight: This one didn’t get worse, it got replaced. Hero Knight exists, so players just switch, and the Evo gets left behind.
- Dart Goblin: The poison cloud used to be the whole identity. With the poison duration shortened, the chip is gone, and even bait decks prefer the normal version.

- Royal Hogs Evolution: This is split lane pressure that almost always gets something, even when defended. Put it in the middle and watch your opponent waste way more Elixir than needed.
- Baby Dragon Evolution: The wind gust aura turns it into tempo control, not just splash. F2P value is simple here, it helps you win equal trades by slowing enemies and speeding your troops.
- Mortar Evolution: It forces answers over and over and beats slow setups for cheap. You can win any game purely from your positioning of it.
- Wall Breakers Evolution: Not an all-or-nothing card anymore, so even correct defense loses to it. Two Elixir pressure is exactly what F2P needs to farm Elixir leads and chip.
- Witch Evolution: She heals when her skeletons die and can overheal, so she does not get chipped out for free. For F2P, that means more room for error and a support card that keeps paying you back in Beatdown and Control.
