What Separates Darkness Decks From Others

If you decided to build a Dark-type deck, you gotta know how it’s different from other meta decks. Mainly, the type decides a card’s strength and weakness against other types. For instance, Darkness type in Pokemon is strong against:

  • Psychic: Is very widespread with decks like Sleep Altaria or Mega Altaria EX & Gourgeist

However, Darkness type is weak against:

  • Grass
  • Fighting

Right now, the biggest and ultimate counter to Darkness builds are Grass-type decks, specifically decks that use Mega Sceptile EX. Another counter is Mega Lucario EX, which belongs to the Fighting type. However, you still can win if you outtempo them, and that’s where the true strength of Darkness decks in this patch comes. Darkness’s main identity is the ability to be aggressive throughout all stages of the game. Let’s compare it to other popular meta deck types:

Deck style

Usual game plan

Typical Decks

Big attacker decks

Build one card and do high damage

Mega Lucario EX, Mega Blaziken EX Greninja, Mega Sceptile EX Sceptile

Energy ramp decks

Gain Energy faster than the opponent

Suicune EX Baxcalibur, Miraidon EX Magnezone, Magnezone Miraidon EX

Control decks

Deny combos and drag the game out.

Mega Altaria EX Espeon, Mega Lucario EX Greninja, Greninja Mega Absol EX, Mega Altaria EX Greninja

Darkness decks

Chip damage and constant pressure

Zoroark EX Mega Absol EX, Hydreigon Mega Absol EX, Darkrai EX Mega Absol EX

Most of the time, Darkness decks outplay others, except for big decks, where their main way to win is landing big punches once they have enough energy. Your general strategy is to start applying pressure as soon as possible, and I’m gonna tell you exactly how to do that with each deck below. Let’s start.

Mega Absol EX & Hydreigon

One of the strongest darkness decks in Pokemon TCG Pocket. This deck isn’t the absolute powerhouse like the Zoroark Mega Absol Darkrai deck we’ll talk about later, but it’s up there. It’s easy to pick up and doesn’t require extensive understanding to fully realize the potential. Even if you’re just a mediocre player, this deck will work anyway. Of course, this doesn’t mean that it’s an autowin button. It’s still very much possible to counter with Mega Sceptile EX or Mega Lucario EX decks, since this deck is slower than the majority of other Dark decks. To pull this deck off, you’ll need these cards:

  • Mega Absol EX x1
  • Deino x2
  • Hydreigon x2
  • Bombirdier x1
  • Roaring Moon x1
  • Rocky Helmet x2
  • Cyrus x1
  • Rare Candy x2
  • Copycat x2
  • Lucky Ice Pop x2
  • Hiking Trail x1
  • Poké Ball x2
  • Professor’s Research x1

The biggest trick here is balancing Hydreigon’s HP since it hurts itself when you use the ability. Your cycle is to use Mega Absol EX to weaken the opponent, then evolve Deino into Hydreigon, charge the Hydreigon, and blow the big targets up. You heal it with Lucky Ice Pop and dish out the wounded Pokemon with Cyrus. In short, Absol is your softener, and Hydreigon is your finisher. Pretty straightforward game plan. Don’t commit the biggest mistake using this deck - don’t put Hydreigon into the Active spot before it’s ready. Reserve it for the late game. Eating too much damage will make it a nuisance and not a combo finisher.

Darkrai EX & Mega Absol EX

Another strong contender for the name of the top darkness deck in Pokemon TCG Pocket, a slower version of a stronger deck. This one is far more technical and the most complex of the three. Unlike other Darkness decks, this one is less about relying on the tempo and more about chipping the enemy and controlling their attempts at beating your Pokemon. If you enjoy clever outplays and setting up traps for your opponent to fall into, this is your deck. Here are the cards for this spectacular deck:

  • Froakie x2
  • Greninja x2
  • Darkrai EX x1
  • Chingling x2
  • Mega Absol EX x1
  • Rocky Helmet x1
  • Cyrus x1
  • Rare Candy x2
  • Inflatable Boat x1
  • Copycat x2
  • Hiking Trail x1
  • Poké Ball x2
  • Professor’s Research x2

Your game plan is to deny the opponent’s items with Chingling while evolving Froakie into Greninja. Start chipping away with Darkrai EX’s ability. Same for Greninja’s Water Shuriken. Mega Absol EX is a finisher, though it’s not the best at that role, but we mainly use it to control the field. In summary, you slap your opponent on the wrist until you win. This deck is especially vulnerable to high-hitters, so you might as well surrender immediately.

Mega Absol EX, Zoroark EX & Darkrai EX

You know how some people call tempo decks brain-dead? Well, they’re not wrong with this one. It’s brain-dead in the best possible way. It’s one of the best decks in Pokemon TCG Pocket in general, not just for the Darkness type. It’s fast and easy to understand. Your goal is to start beating your opponent down before they establish their board. Here are the cards you’ll need for it:

  • Darkrai EX x1
  • Mega Absol EX x1
  • Zorua x2
  • Zoroark EX x2
  • Bombirdier x1
  • Sabrina x1
  • Giant Cape x1
  • Rocky Helmet x2
  • Cyrus x1
  • Pokémon Center Lady x1
  • Copycat x2
  • Lucky Ice Pop x1
  • Poké Ball x2
  • Professor’s Research x2

The plan draws itself. Just for fun, try ignoring this section and just play the deck intuitively. You’ll realize how to play it almost immediately. But anyway, let me break down the game plan. Your goal is to set Zorua on the board asap and evolve it into Zoroark EX. Zoroark is your main attacker for the first couple of stages. Darkrai EX provides passive damage support, and Mega Absol EX is there to disrupt your opponent’s plans. All Trainer cards are here to make your opponent’s trades disadvantageous, and you should use them all the time. Your win route is by just overwhelming your opponent. The biggest mistake here would be playing it as a slower control deck. In this case, you’ll lose every time. Go full Moon Knight with throwing everything you've got.
