Pokemon TCG Pocket Meta Decks Explained

The current Pokemon TCG Pocket meta is in a weird state right now cause it’s kind of a Wild West. There are maybe around 20+ decks that can take you to Master Ball without much trouble. If you didn’t find your favorite deck here, don’t think of it as weak, cause the number of viable decks is stupendous. Picking the right decks from this list was kind of a bother, but all things considered, I made a list with 7 decks that will take you to the highest of the summits. If you’re aiming to reach the top 1000, these are the decks to look out for. In this meta, if you want the strongest Pokemon TCG Pocket decks for climbing higher, I’d focus on decks that have good matchups against Sleep, enough draw support, and good game-enders. Here’s how I’d rank the best decks right now:

Zoroark EX & Darkrai

I think Zoroark EX & Darkrai is probably the best deck in Pokemon TCG Pocket right now, hands down. It’s a tournament deck that plays insanely well in ranked games. The tempo of the deck is high. It always has an answer to any scenario, and most importantly, it’s consistent in gameplay. You won’t find situations where you’ll be cursing the RNG for not giving you a needed card. The main appeal of this Dark deck is that it’s very unrequiring of its player. I mean, of course, you have to be aware of the stuff as prize mapping to really be good, but it’s viable at all play levels. It can go up against pretty much any other deck, so if you don’t know your matchups all too well, this deck is a great all-rounder that will almost carry you yourself. Zoroark EX is a strong Stage 1 attacker, and Darkrai adds lots of pressure on your opponent. You can also use Mega Absol EX as another threat, though I still think Mega Absol EX loses more games than people want to admit. Adding Rocky Helmet, Pokemon Center Lady, Sabrina, Cyrus, and Copycat creates a deck that feels quite complete and ready to bite back. If I had to choose one deck for ranked without knowing what I’d face, this would probably be it.

Greninja & Mega Altaria EX

Greninja & Mega Altaria EX is the Altaria deck I like the most, if you want more upside, which means normal cards with benefits. It’s not the safest, nor the most popular version, but it can do some disgusting things once the pieces are in place. A list of cards for one of the best psychic decks is:

Your hidden gem of this deck is Chingling. Chingling is one of those cards your opponents won’t respect enough. You’ll be shocked how many ranked games it wins by itself. And if your opponent takes out your Chingling fast, your Lucky Egg is there to show them that it was a bad idea. Mega Altaria EX is a very easy Pokemon to put into your deck. High HP, good damage, and a pretty neat attack cost. You don’t need much to get it going. Greninja adds the extra damage to further beat down on your opponent. The only real downside is that the deck can be quite wonky if you don’t pull the needed cards in the beginning. But when it works, it is much stronger than Sleep Altaria, which is another popular deck I’ll talk about later.

Suicune EX & Chien-Pao EX

Suicune EX & Chien-Pao EX is the meta Water deck right now. I don’t think there’s much competition there. If you want to play Water energy, this is the deck. The main strength of the deck is good drawing power, and it has beefy Pokemon. Suicune EX is for steady card cycling, and Chien-Pao EX is a game finisher. Baxcalibur helps with energy support. Giant Cape and healing cards make it even more annoying to break through. Here are all the cards you’ll need:

This deck also benefits from the fact that not many people are hard-teching against it. Protected Poncho is not something you’ll see every other game, so Chien-Pao EX usually gets to do what you need. I’d recommend this deck if you like slower, more controlled games. It’s not flashy like some Mega Altaria EX decks, but it just works, in the words of Todd Howard.

Mega Altaria EX & Gourgeist

Yet another version of Altaria. This isn’t the last time you’ll see it. It doesn’t have the same potential as Greninja Altaria, but it’s also more reliable. This is the deck I’d recommend if you like having a plan every game. Gourgeist is quite a strong attacker and helps in certain matchups where Altaria alone isn’t enough. It’s a good counter to Oricorio, which you’ll face here and there, and it would usually hinder your winning odds. Here are the cards:

The main appeal of this deck is that you’re always online. You kinda sacrifice the highest highs for a safer approach. You don’t beat people as often, but you also don’t lose as many games to your own hand. If you’re someone who prefers high-roll decks, this deck isn’t for you. Some prefer consistency, though. This deck is very much the second type. If you want to play Mega Altaria EX without relying on Sleep or coin flips, Gourgeist is a really solid version.

 

 

Sceptile EX & Ogerpon EX

Sceptile & Ogerpon is still one of the top Grass decks in Pokemon TCG Pocket. I don’t think Grass is the king of the format anymore, but this deck has enough good matchups to stay relevant. The biggest draw to playing the deck is the Sleep counter. Ogerpon helps against those decks, and since Sleep is everywhere in ranked, it’s a big point to consider. Sceptile also gives you a strong Stage 2 payoff that can handle a lot of the slower decks that are now in the meta. The cards you’ll need for this deck are:

The deck’s main downside is its speed. Most Grass decks need time to realize the setup, and some of the current Dark and Lightning decks aren’t gonna wait for you. If your opponent starts punching you in the face from turn two, Sceptile is helpless. Still, I like the deck. It’s not the most exciting choice, but it’s balanced and has good counters for popular ranked decks. If I have a bad day, I pick this deck and pray that Sleep decks are matched against me.

Hydreigon & Mega Absol EX

Hydreigon & Mega Absol EX is one of the easiest ranked decks. If you don’t want to study the meta like it’s a college course, you can consider picking this deck up. It’s easier than the Zoroark/Darkrai one. The strategy is to get Hydreigon on the board, attack with it, then finish with Mega Absol EX. That’s the whole idea. And this is the biggest value. In a meta where you need to consider lots of various options, Hydreigon just doesn’t do that. It has a very direct game plan, and for ranked, that can be a good thing. You’re not countering every popular deck, you’re trying to outpace your opponent. The cards for this deck are:

The obvious problem is that it can lose to itself. If you don’t draw your evolution pieces or Rare Candy doesn’t arrive on time, you’ll probably think I baited you into building a bad deck. I didn’t, but that’s something you have to bear in mind when playing a deck like this. When it hits, it hits hard. I still recommend it for ranked because it’s powerful and very straightforward.

 

 

Sleep Altaria

Sleep Altaria is the most popular deck in Pokemon TCG Pocket, so it deserves a mention. Even though I don’t think it’s the best deck that currently exists. The deck uses the scourge of this patch, which is Sleep with Mega Altaria EX. It tries to slow the opponent down while preparing for damage. When it works, it feels unfair. When it doesn’t, you lose because of the coin flip. Maybe that’s fun for some people, but for me it feels like a one-armed bandit draw. I personally don’t like relying on RNG as the main reason my deck wins, even though RNG is present in every deck to some degree. If you want to build this deck, here’s what you need:

That being said, you will face this deck a lot. If you play ranked, your deck needs to have some sort of counter against Sleep. If it doesn’t, you’ll have a bad time. Play Sleep Altaria if you enjoy the rush you get from randomness, but I’d rather suggest playing Greninja Altaria or Gourgeist Altaria.
