WoW Forever Alchemy Changes

Alchemy is still pretty much the same profession as it was in Vanilla or Classic WoW. The basics are the same - you gather herbs, combine them with other reagents to create various consumables like potions, elixirs, and flasks that give you all sorts of buffs. In WoW Forever, you get way more new materials that you can use to make a lot more new consumables. Plus, there are new crafting mechanics.
Alchemists did lose one thing - the Healing Potions. These are now available to First Aid, which is a secondary profession. Instead, Alchemists get Discolored Healing Potions that restore a substantial amount of health immediately but deal damage to the user over time afterward.
And that’s the kind of trade-off that you get. I guess the First Aid secondary profession needed something more to justify its existence, while what you make with Alchemy is useful in other ways.
Here’s what else is new or different, a blitz recap:
- New herbs: Marefoil, Demonsage, and Death Lotus are important additions for high-level Alchemy.
- Scarce materials: Rosecap, Stranglevine, and Frilled Lichen can be obtained through gathering and are used in new crafting recipes.
- New dyes: Cerulean Dye, Magenta Dye, and Viridian Dye, along with Sulfuric Acid, are used by other professions to craft equipment.
- New combat consumables: Alchemists can make temporary damage and healing buffs, as well as throwable Disorienting Smog Potions and Caustic Smog Potions.
- Camping features: Mana Well, Fermenter, and Alchemy Laboratory allow using alchemy “on the go” with a sort of mobile lab.
- New transmutations: Legionite Bar can be created through Transmute: Legionite and used to craft powerful equipment.
I gotta say I do love the new middle-level crafting recipes and materials. In Classic, Alchemy relied a lot on selling consumables to other players. Now, Blacksmiths, Tailors, Leatherworkers, and other crafters can also become regular customers.
New Alchemy Herbs and Materials
WoW Forever introduces several materials that weren't available in the original game. Some are regular herbs, while others belong to the new Scarce materials system, which gives gatherers a chance to obtain additional rare materials.
Here are the new materials you should know about:

The dyes and Sulfuric Acid are particularly interesting because they appear in a large number of crafting recipes across several professions. You can learn Cerulean Dye and Sulfuric Acid at 40 Alchemy, Magenta Dye at 120, and Viridian Dye at 220.
I wouldn't recommend crafting these exclusively for leveling, though. They're potentially more expensive than regular potions. However, if you can sell the finished materials for enough gold to recover your expenses, they could be worth making even when cheaper leveling recipes are available.
Leveling Alchemy in WoW Forever
Alchemy leveling has changed in WoW Forever compared to Classic because of the fact that some recipes and their ingredients got reshuffled, so the skill ranges aren’t the same anymore. In other words, the Classic WoW guides for this profession aren’t really compatible anymore.
Unfortunately, I can’t tell you what Alchemy looks like at the highest skill level and endgame. Since the game has just launched, realistically no one has that kind of experience yet. For now, I'll focus on the tested 1–225 progression and update the rest as more information becomes available.
Before you begin, remember how recipe colors work:
- Orange recipes guarantee a skill point whenever you craft them.
- Yellow recipes have a good chance of increasing your skill, but aren't guaranteed.
- Green recipes have a relatively low chance of providing a skill point.
- Gray recipes no longer increase your Alchemy skill.
That’s actually similar to how other professions and recipes work. However, sticking with cheaper yellow recipes can sometimes save you gold, especially if you've invested Legacy Points into Working Overtime.
Alchemy Levels 1–100
The first 100 levels are relatively straightforward. Start by crafting Elixir of Minor Force until approximately skill 10 or Minor Arcane Elixir (1× Peacebloom, 1× Empty Vial), then switch to Elixir of Minor Defense. You can continue making the latter until around skill 55.
At 55, move to Minor Mana Potion and craft it until 65. After that, use Elixir of Minor Fortitude until approximately 90.
You can finish this stage by crafting Elixir of Wisdom, which remains a useful leveling option beyond skill 100.
Here's the recommended route:
|
Skill |
Recipe |
Materials per craft |
|
1–10 |
1x Silverleaf, 1x Empty Vial |
|
|
1-10 |
1× Peacebloom, 1× Empty Vial |
|
|
10–55 |
1x Silverleaf, 1x Peacebloom, 1x Empty Vial |
|
|
55–65 |
1x Mageroyal, 1x Peacebloom, 1x Empty Vial |
|
|
65–90 |
2x Earthroot, 1x Peacebloom, 1x Empty Vial |
|
|
90–100 |
1x Mageroyal, 2x Briarthorn, 1x Empty Vial |
Most of these materials are common herbs, and it's pretty easy to find them, so you shouldn't have too much trouble gathering them yourself. Silverleaf and Peacebloom are particularly useful, and I recommend saving them while leveling Herbalism.
By the way, I got a great addon in my Best addons for WoW Forever list that will help you locate any herb node and even draw gathering routes right on your map!
Alchemy Levels 100–200
The next stage introduces more expensive herbs, so you should start paying closer attention to Auction House prices. Continue crafting Elixir of Wisdom until approximately 130. Keep in mind that the recipe turns yellow at 120, meaning you won't receive a skill point from every craft.
Afterward, switch to Lesser Mana Potion. You can also consider Elixir of Lesser Defense if its ingredients are cheaper. Wild Steelbloom is one of the main materials to watch here, since its price can make alternative recipes considerably less attractive.
From 165 onward, I recommend sticking with Mana Potion. You can continue using it for quite a while, especially if Kingsblood and Stranglekelp are relatively affordable.
|
Skill |
Recipe |
Materials per craft |
|
100–130 |
1x Mageroyal, 2x Briarthorn, 1x Empty Vial |
|
|
130–165 |
1x Mageroyal, 1x Stranglekelp, 1x Empty Vial |
|
|
165–185 |
1x Stranglekelp, 1x Kingsblood, 1x Leaded Vial |
|
|
185–200 |
Mana Potion / Elixir of Agility |
Depends on material prices |
At around 185, you get more options, including Elixir of Agility and Elixir of Defense. However, I wouldn't automatically switch to these recipes.
Goldthorn can be expensive, especially at launch when everyone is leveling professions. If Mana Potions remain cheaper, you may save gold by continuing to craft them even when their skill-up chance decreases.
Alchemy Levels 200–225
The final part of the tested leveling route is somewhat flexible. Mana Potions can remain useful, but their skill-up chance becomes less reliable as you progress.
I recommend comparing the cost of Mana Potions with Elixir of Agility and Elixir of Defense. The latter recipes may be worth crafting if you already have their materials or find them cheaply on the Auction House.
|
Skill |
Recipe |
Recommendation |
|
200–225 |
Good alternative if Goldthorn is affordable |
|
|
200–225 |
Another option depending on materials |
|
|
200–225 |
Can remain cheaper if you have spare herbs |
Keep in mind that some recipes will be yellow during this stage. This means the number of required crafts can vary quite significantly.
Alchemy Levels 225–300
The most efficient Alchemy leveling route from 225 to 300 hasn't been properly established in-game yet. While the Forever database already contains high-level recipes, I wouldn't recommend blindly following an untested progression, especially when rare herbs can cost a lot of gold.
This is where we’re still kind of in the unknown. I personally struggle to get my main character to level 60; the rest of the community is more or less in the same position. I will update the guide when I have more information.
For now, my advice is to prioritize recipes that remain orange or yellow and compare their material requirements before crafting. Remember that some recipes also require special crafting stations, vendors, or reputation unlocks.
I'll expand this section with a proper leveling route and material shopping list once the endgame progression has been tested more thoroughly.

Best Alchemy Recipes in WoW Forever
WoW Forever adds plenty of new Alchemy recipes, and not all of them are simply stronger versions of the old consumables. Some provide temporary offensive bonuses, while others have more specialized effects that could be useful in PvP, dungeons, or raids.
I would divide the most interesting additions into three categories: flasks, combat potions, and elixirs.
New Alchemy Flasks
There are four new Natural Flasks in WoW Forever. All of them grant 60 Stamina, but they also provide an additional bonus while you're in Mount Hyjal, Hyjal Summit, or the Barrow Deeps.
These effects make them particularly relevant for the new endgame content. Outside these locations, you still benefit from the Stamina bonus, but not the additional offensive effect.
|
Flask |
Additional effect in designated areas |
|
+5% Hit Chance |
|
|
+4% Critical Strike Chance |
|
|
5% reduced chance for attacks to be dodged or parried |
|
|
+5% Haste |
All four flasks require 300 Alchemy to craft, according to the current database. Their effects last two hours and persist through death, making them particularly useful for longer raid sessions.
Personally, I think these are among the most interesting additions to Alchemy. The bonuses are substantial, and because they're tied to specific endgame activities, players may want different flasks depending on their class and build.
New Alchemy Potions
Forever also introduces a new category of temporary combat buffs. Unlike flasks, these potions provide relatively short effects that you can use during important moments in combat.
For example, physical damage dealers can use Major Frenzy Potion for additional Attack Power, while spellcasters get Major Spellblasting Potion. Healers also receive their own version that increases spell healing.
|
Potion |
Effect |
|
+80 Attack Power for 30 seconds |
|
|
+47 Spell Power for 30 seconds |
|
|
+88 Healing for 30 seconds |
|
|
Creates a cloud that reduces enemy hit chance by 10% |
|
|
Creates a cloud that deals Nature damage every second for 12 seconds |
The Smog Potions are particularly unusual because you throw them at an area rather than drink them yourself.
Disorienting Smog Potion could potentially help against groups of enemies, while Caustic Smog Potion provides additional area damage. It's still too early to say whether either will become essential in endgame builds, but I definitely wouldn't ignore them.
New Alchemy Elixirs
The new elixirs provide more traditional character buffs. Some improve spell damage or healing, while others combine different physical damage bonuses.
Here are three notable examples:
|
Elixir |
Effect |
|
+40 Nature Spell Damage |
|
|
+40 Healing |
|
|
+25 Strength and +2% Critical Strike Chance |
Elixir of the Grizzly is probably the most interesting one here for physical damage dealers, considering it combines two offensive stats. However, the best choice ultimately depends on your class, specialization, and what other buffs you already have.
How to Unlock New Alchemy Recipes
Not every Alchemy recipe in Forever can be learned from a regular trainer. While basic recipes are relatively straightforward to obtain, many new consumables require reputation, special vendors, quest rewards, or drops.
One of the most important additions is the Merchant's Favor system. You earn this currency by completing supply crate deliveries, then spend it on profession recipes and other rewards.
Both factions have their own profession vendors:
- Alliance: Azeroth Commerce Authority vendors in Redridge Mountains.
- Horde: Durotar Supply and Logistics vendors in the Barrens.
Some recipes can be purchased immediately once you have enough Merchant's Favor, while others require Friendly or Honored reputation.
For example, the current database lists Greater Cleric's Elixir at Friendly reputation for 120 Merchant's Favor. Higher-level recipes, including Elixir of Nature Power and Caustic Smog Potion, require Honored reputation and 180 Merchant's Favor.
This is why I recommend working on your supply crate deliveries while leveling. Reaching 300 Alchemy won't automatically unlock everything, and you probably don't want to start grinding reputation from scratch once you're already at the profession cap.
Making Gold with Alchemy in Forever
I would say Alchemy has excellent gold-making potential in Forever, although it's difficult to predict which recipes will be the most profitable this early after launch.
What makes the profession interesting is that you don't have to rely on one particular market. There are several categories of items that players will need repeatedly, and some aren't even consumables.
Here are the methods I'd focus on:
- Sell dyes and intermediate reagents. Cerulean, Magenta, and Viridian Dyes, along with Sulfuric Acid, are used in recipes from other professions. Check whether selling these materials is more profitable than selling the herbs directly.
- Craft combat consumables. Frenzy, Spellblasting, and Mender's Potions provide temporary combat bonuses, meaning players will have to keep replacing them.
- Sell flasks and elixirs. Endgame players will need consumables for raids, dungeons, and other difficult content. Natural Flasks could become particularly valuable because of their powerful bonuses.
- Use your transmutation cooldowns. High-level transmutations can convert valuable materials into crafting reagents with limited daily or multi-day production.
Personally, I'd start by checking dye prices. It's a relatively straightforward market to enter, and demand isn't limited to players buying potions for combat.
At the same time, remember to calculate your crafting expenses. A potion selling for several gold doesn't necessarily mean you're making a profit if its herbs are even more expensive.
Transmute: Legionite
Transmute: Legionite is one of the most interesting new high-level Alchemy recipes.
It requires 275 Alchemy and allows you to convert a Heavy Thorium Bar and Fel Crystal into a Legionite Bar. Legionite is used in crafting powerful equipment, including new high-level weapons.
The important part is that the transmutation has a cooldown of approximately two days, so you cannot produce unlimited quantities.
This creates a potential opportunity for Alchemists who reach the required skill early. If other professions need Legionite for expensive crafted equipment, players may be willing to pay a premium for it.
However, the source of the recipe hasn't been conclusively confirmed yet. I'll update this section once its availability is established.
Alchemy Camping Features in WoW Forever
The Camping system introduces another useful improvement for Alchemists. You can now create profession-specific features that provide bonuses or enable additional crafting functionality.
There are three main Alchemy camping features:
|
Camping feature |
Alchemy skill |
Purpose |
|
20 |
Provides a mana regeneration benefit |
|
|
140 |
Required for certain Alchemy recipes |
|
|
300 |
Allows crafting recipes that require an Alchemy laboratory |
I particularly like the Alchemy Laboratory because of how inconvenient flask crafting used to be in Classic WoW.
Previously, certain flasks required visiting a special Alchemy laboratory, such as the one in Scholomance. Now, you can eventually place your own laboratory through the Camping system, which makes crafting much more convenient.
It might not be as exciting as the powerful equipment other professions can create, but it's a good quality-of-life improvement that should save Alchemists plenty of unnecessary travel.
Best Profession to Pair with Alchemy
Herbalism is easily the best profession to pair with Alchemy in WoW Forever. Most potions, elixirs, and flasks require herbs, so being able to gather them yourself can save you quite a lot of gold.
This is especially important early after launch when profession materials are in high demand. Instead of purchasing everything from the Auction House, you can collect herbs while leveling your character or completing quests.
The combination also gives you more flexibility when making gold. If the finished potions aren't selling for enough, you can simply sell the herbs themselves.
As for classes, I wouldn't say there's one that benefits significantly more from Alchemy than everyone else. Healers and spellcasters will get plenty of use from Mana Potions and spell-related buffs, while physical DPS characters can benefit from Frenzy Potions and offensive elixirs.
However, Alchemy doesn't currently appear to offer the same amount of profession-exclusive character power as Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, or Tailoring. The Alchemist's Stone is listed in the Forever database, but its actual availability still needs confirmation.
If you're choosing a profession purely for exclusive endgame gear, Alchemy might not be your first choice. If you want useful consumables and a potentially profitable crafting profession, it's a much more attractive option.
Alchemy Legacy Bonuses in WoW Forever
Alchemy also benefits from the new Legacy system, which rewards you for progressing through professions and completing specific challenges.
Reaching 150, 225, and 300 Alchemy for the first time awards Legacy Points through the corresponding profession challenges. You can then invest these points into bonuses that improve your crafting experience.
One of the most useful perks is Working Overtime. It has five ranks, each increasing your chance of gaining a profession skill point by 4%, for a total bonus of 20%.
This can be particularly useful when crafting yellow or green recipes, where skill points aren't guaranteed. However, remember that it doesn't provide additional benefits when crafting orange recipes because those already guarantee a skill increase.
There's also Dedicated Study, which allows you to increase your lowest profession skill by one on a daily cooldown.
Neither perk is absolutely necessary for leveling Alchemy, but both can help you save materials in the long run.
