What is WoW Forever?

If this is your first time trying out World of Warcraft, you’re in for a treat, because WoW Forever actually gives you the opportunity to practically experience the same feelings as the players did in 2004 when this game first came out.
I don’t think I can explain what the game is any better than the developers did during BlizzCon panels, but if you’ve not been following this game much, I’ll paint you a picture: WoW Forever is the original World of Warcraft before it received its first expansion (Burning Crusade), and it is also greatly expanded in terms of new content like zones, quests, monsters, dungeons, etc. So, in other words, Forever is the original game plus what would happen if the following expansions never came out.
What this means is that, first and foremost, WoW Forever is its own game. It's not any kind of expansion to WoW Classic or retail; it’s not the short-lived Season of Discovery (although it seems to have inspired a lot of things you’ll see in the game); it is a standalone game that will exist parallel to the retail WoW with its latest expansion and whatever other iteration of the game exists - Anniversary, Classic, etc.
This is a big deal, because while WoW Classic was created so that players could relive the same sense of discovery and excitement they had when they started the game and basically go on the same journey from the very start, what Forever does is reignite the sense of discovery by actually adding new stuff to the very first version of the game, so instead of going through the same zones, killing the same monsters, and beating the same raid bosses, there’s actually something new to find and experience.
The reason this approach works is that if you haven’t played WoW yet, the original World of Warcraft and its world called Azeroth is so incredibly massive, it’s practically a canvas for expanding and adding new content. And the other thing that makes Forever actually stand out is the fact that while it is staying true to the original, it still introduces some modern features, especially in terms of visuals such as the volumetric fog and actual weather effects that make the game way more atmospheric and awesome to immerse yourself in.
How to Create a Character in WoW Forever?

Now, I know that intro was a little bit long, but why stop there, right? I don’t suppose any current WoW players, but there are some important changes that need to be highlighted. And if it is your first time, even better!
So, it all starts with selecting the ruleset or a realm type. Even before creating a character, you must decide what type of ruleset you want to play on. Here are your options:
- Normal – This ruleset allows you to focus on adventuring and fighting monsters while allowing you to fight other players at your own discretion.
- PvP – This ruleset allows you to focus on player-versus-player combat. You are almost always at risk of being attacked by opposing players.
- Roleplay (RP) – This ruleset has strict naming conventions and behavior rules for players interested in immersing themselves as a character in a fantasy-based world.
- Hardcore – This challenging ruleset features permanent player character death. Dead characters may transfer to other rulesets to be resurrected.
The choice is yours, but if this is your first time, then you should know a few things. This game was originally focused on the confrontation between the Alliance races and the Horde races. You will pick a side during the character creation, as each side has a unique selection of races.
The game world has areas that are neutral (or contested) where players from opposing factions can freely attack each other. Also, due to the open nature of the game’s world, it is possible to travel to the territories that are owned by the enemy faction. So, the difference between the normal and PvP is the fact that, in contested and friendly zones, PvP is optional and enabled by toggling the PvP flag on a player, by a player. In the PvP ruleset, the player-versus-player conflict in contested zones is not optional, so it's a free-for-all. In my mind, that’s how it's supposed to be.
The roleplay ruleset is for those who want to actually roleplay as their character, and so the rules enforce that a little. In terms of PvP, it’s the same as Normal, but whenever there are any community-run RPG events, you’re not allowed to interrupt them, and apparently that’s a bannable offense. But don’t quote me on that.
Hardcore is not available at the launch of the game; it will be released a month later, but basically you get only one life per character. If you die, your character cannot respawn. It’s an interesting challenge that has its own community behind it, and apparently it has its own rewards.
Once the ruleset is chosen, it cannot be changed. You can only make a new character in a different ruleset.
Choosing a Race and a Class

There are 10 races in total to pick from, 5 of which represent the Alliance and the other 5 represent the Horde. There are also 9 classes, but not every race can be any class. There are some restrictions. On top of that, each race has a few racial traits; these are unique effects or abilities only available to that specific race. For example, the only separately paid-for ($30 no less!) race, Skyborn, can hover in the air due to their unique racial ability called Walk on Air.
As someone who has written multiple class tier lists for every conceivable version of World of Warcraft, I would suggest not picking a class or a racial trait first. Pick which race you want to play and then the class. This game has a very long leveling process, and you will be playing your character a lot, so it's best to make a character you connect with rather than picking from a tier list.
But if it's the tier list you want, then check out the WoW Forever Classes Tier List.
Once you get to the appearance editor, there aren’t that many options here compared to retail, but at least you have the option to toggle between the actual classic vanilla low-polygon models and the more modernized ones. However, what’s arguably even more important is the name. Unlike in retail (and obviously I wish they did it for retail too), your character name actually consists of two parts: a main name and a secondary name. You can treat it as first and last names. This might not seem like anything out of the ordinary for new players, but it’s actually a huge difference compared to how WoW handled character names until Forever came along.
What to Do in The First Minutes of WoW Forever
As soon as you’re done creating your character, you’ll see a short cutscene that quickly goes over the lore behind the starting area that’s different based on the chosen race. This is going to give you some background for your character and their place in the world of Azeroth. But before you actually go and get your first quest, I recommend getting into some settings for a quick minute.
I’m not actually going to go into great detail about settings and UI customization here, because we do have a great WoW Forever Settings guide, which I suggest you check out.
Right now, I just want you to know that the game allows you to edit the HUD. So, if you press Esc and click on the “Edit Mode,” you can actually move around different UI elements on the screen to where you want them. You can also resize those elements, toggle them on or off, etc. This is one of those things that got adopted from the retail version of the game. And for a new player, this might not be a huge deal, but I’m sure that veteran players will appreciate that. I know I will.
You can also install and use various addons from third parties (mostly CurseForge.com). Some of the addons are designed for seasoned players who know exactly what they need, but there are addons designed specifically for first-time players. We’re currently working on the best addons for WoW Forever, so stay tuned. I’ll add the link here once it's ready.
Your First Quests
Once you’ve picked your first quest, depending on whether or not you have that option on, you’ll have a quest helper that will show you the quest objective area or the monster you need to kill. This wasn’t in the original 2004 version of the game, but it's here in retail if you need the extra help. I would recommend using it, unless you want to go full-on old-school.
Inventory and Bags Management

You may notice that your inventory (‘B’ by default) is made of chunks of inventory slots. The fact of the matter is, your inventory consists of separately equippable bag items. Each bag comes with its own number of slots, and while it may feel unnecessarily overcomplicated, the advantage of bags is that you can bind them to make sure that different bags are used for specific types of items. That helps sort the items in your inventory quite a lot.
Speaking of cleaning up your inventory, certain items that you will get along the way are nothing more than Junk. This means that their only use is to be sold to a vendor. Well, once you interact with the vendor, there’ll be a “Sell All Junk Items” button in the menu. Click on that, and all Junk items will be sold at once, which is pretty handy!
Repairs!

As you fight enemies, your equipment gets damaged over time, and that means the lower the durability of your gear, the worse its stats are. So you need to repair your gear every so often. This can be done at special merchants that have the repair options available in their menu.
You can either repair all gear at once or repair individual pieces. Repairs cost coins.
How to Unlock New Skills and Talents

To unlock new skills, you need to learn them from a class trainer. There are class trainers all around Azeroth for each class, and learning new skills costs money. Plus, there are level requirements and ranks. Ranks are basically skill levels; for example, for a warrior:
- Rend (Rank 2) requires level 10 and costs 10 Silver and 70 Bronze coins
Starting from level 10, you’ll start getting talent points each time you level up. Each class has 3 (sometimes 4) talent trees with a bunch of talents, some of which add passive bonuses, change how a skill works, or add new skills. Talent trees make your class work differently, changing the role from Tank to DPS or Healer depending on the class. Dual Specialization also becomes available at level 40, allowing you to switch between two builds.
Respeccing talent points is possible,e but it costs money, so it's always best to look up a class guide such as my Hunter guide for WoW Forever, which is a class I’ll main to make sure you’re not wasting talent points.

Professions Overview

Professions are a very big part of World of Warcraft. So, it’s not all about fighting monsters or the opposite faction. A Profession can really be seen as a peaceful secondary class, if you will. Because just like classes, professions can be leveled up and improved.
Professions are super important because they can do a lot for you: help you earn extra gold by selling resources or crafted items at the auction house, craft better (sometimes best-in-slot) gear, make consumables and potions, and so on. And I know this is getting too much for a new player to wrap a head around, but I wouldn’t sleep on these. Sure, you need to worry about your class skills, talents, questing, surviving, and all. But trust me, with professions, the game becomes easier and more interesting at the same time!
There are 12 professions in WoW Forever, divided into Gathering, Crafting, and Secondary categories. Gathering professions let you collect materials out in the world, while Crafting professions turn these materials into useful items. Secondary professions are available to everyone and provide additional ways to earn Gold, heal yourself, or prepare food. You can learn 2 Primary Professions (Gathering or Crafting) and all 3 Secondary Professions on one character.

To level up a profession, you need to gather materials or craft items. Some professions require special tools, like a Mining Pick or Skinning Knife, which you can buy from supply vendors. Herbalism and Mining also have tracking abilities that show nearby resources on your minimap. You can tell whether gathering or crafting something will increase your profession skill by its color: orange means a guaranteed skill point, yellow and green mean there's a chance, and gray means you won't get any. My advice is to start leveling professions early, alongside your character, so you don't have to return to low-level zones later.
Professions received some major updates in WoW Forever. There are over 600 new recipes, and many existing ones have been improved to make crafting useful even before you reach level 60. But I’m sure that if you’re new, you wouldn’t be able to tell new from old ones. Some of the more interesting changes include:
- Camping: Each profession can contribute special objects to campsites that provide buffs and useful services. For example, Blacksmiths can place Sharpening Wheels, while Herbalists can provide Incense Candles. You can also benefit from other players' camps. Simply sit down near a campfire using /sit and wait around 60 seconds to receive the available buffs.
- Legacy Progression: Leveling crafting professions to skill levels 150, 225, and 300 earns Legacy Points, which you can spend on permanent progression perks.
- New Crafting Options: Alchemists can create dyes, Tailors can make Reagent Bags, and First Aid can now craft Healing Potions.
- Improved Cooking: Certain cooked foods now provide a 5% experience bonus from killing enemies, making Cooking especially useful while leveling.
One final thing: professions have their own skill levels, separate from your character level, with a maximum of 300. You improve them by gathering materials or crafting items. You can also change your Primary Professions later, but doing so means losing your progress in the profession you abandon.
Bank and Auction House

While leveling your character, you'll collect tons of items, and your bags will eventually run out of space. That's where the Bank comes in. You can find Bankers in major cities and use them to store items you don't need right now but want to keep for later. You can also purchase additional Bank slots and fill them with bags to increase your storage space.
The Auction House (AH) is where players buy and sell items to each other for Gold. You can find Auctioneers in major cities, and they're especially useful if you're leveling professions. For example, you can sell herbs, ore, leather, and other materials you've gathered instead of using them for crafting. You can also buy equipment, materials, bags, and other useful items from other players.
To sell something, talk to an Auctioneer, select the item, set your price, and list it for sale. Keep in mind that you can't sell Soulbound items, and posting auctions usually requires a deposit. The Auction House also takes a small cut when your item sells.
Personally, I'd recommend storing useful crafting materials in your Bank and selling anything you don't need at the Auction House. Just check the current prices before listing your items, since some low-level materials can actually sell for a surprising amount of Gold.
Dungeons, Raids and Group Finder

Dungeons and raids are quintessential World of Warcraft activities. These are challenging, instanced adventures designed for groups of players where you will have to fight your way through a series of difficult encounters with monsters that are much stronger than in the open world and also defeat the bosses. The rewards in both dungeons and raids are rare, but they’re always better than anything you find when questing outside.
WoW Forever introduces 9 new Dungeons alongside the original Classic ones, including the Hall of Thanes, Ruins of Lordaeron, and City of Dalaran. There are also new Raids, such as the 10-player Barrow Deeps and 20-player Hyjal Summit. The first Raids are scheduled to open on December 9, 2026, so you won't be able to jump straight into them at launch.
How to Find a Group in WoW Forever
To complete dungeons and raids, you need a group,p and luckily, a Group Finder menu has been added to WoW Forever from retail. Just a side note, I know that having to use chat and talk to people is often praised by those who played the original game before they added this quality-of-life function. But you can’t argue with the fact that finding a group with the Group Finder saves a lot of time!
Here's how it works:
- Open Group Finder and select the Create Listing tab.
- Choose your preferred role: Tank, Healer, or DPS. You can select more than one if your class allows it.
- Select your preferred playstyle and add a short message if needed.
- Click List Self to let other players know you're looking for a group.
- Alternatively, open the Group Browser tab, filter by Dungeon or activity, and find players to invite or message.
One important thing to understand is that WoW Forever doesn't have automatic matchmaking or Dungeon teleportation. Group Finder helps you organize a party, but you'll still need to invite other players and travel to the Dungeon entrance yourself. Meeting Stones can help you access the group interface, but they won't teleport your party members.
Mounts and Flight Masters in WoW Forever

Azeroth is a massive world, and you'll spend a lot of time traveling between locations. Luckily, you don't have to run everywhere on foot. WoW Forever has Mounts that increase your movement speed and Flight Masters (sort of like a public transportation network) that let you travel between discovered locations automatically. However, unlike modern WoW, there are no flying mounts, so you'll spend most of your time traveling on the ground. In the original WoW from 2004, mounts were something to be proud of because they were incredibly expensive to get and learn to ride.
How to Unlock Mounts in WoW Forever
Mounts are creatures you can ride to travel faster, and each race has its own, like Horses for Humans, Wolves for Orcs, and Raptors for Trolls. You unlock your first Mount at level 40, but you'll need to learn Riding from a trainer before you can use it. Here's how much it costs:
|
Riding Skill |
Level Required |
Speed Increase |
Training Cost |
|
Apprentice Riding |
40 |
60% |
100 Gold |
|
Journeyman Riding |
60 |
100% |
1,000 Gold |
These prices are before faction reputation discounts. Your first racial Mount is free when you unlock Apprentice Riding, while additional basic Mounts cost 20 Gold. Epic Mounts, which become available at level 60, cost 200 Gold each.
One important detail is that Mounts don't automatically scale with your Riding Skill. A 60% Mount will remain at 60% even after you learn Journeyman Riding, so you'll need a faster Mount to benefit from the upgrade.
WoW Forever also keeps racial Riding Skills. You'll automatically learn your race's Riding Skill when you unlock Apprentice Riding, but if you want to ride another race's Mount, you'll need Exalted reputation with its faction and purchase the appropriate training. There are some exceptions, including rare Mounts that don't require racial Riding Skills.
Also, Paladins and Warlocks have their own class Mounts, which they can unlock through special quests without paying the usual Riding training costs.
How to Use Flight Masters in WoW Forever
Flight Masters are NPCs that offer transportation between different locations for a small amount of money. You can find them in major cities and many leveling zones, usually standing near a flight path with a flying creature waiting nearby.
Before you can travel to a location, you need to discover its Flight Point first. Simply talk to a Flight Master with a green marker above their head to unlock it. After that, you can use connected Flight Points to travel between locations you've already discovered.
My advice is to unlock every Flight Point you come across while leveling. Flight Masters save you a ton of traveling time, especially before you get your first Mount at level 40. You can also enable Flight Master tracking on your minimap to make finding them easier.
Guilds in WoW Forever

Guilds are a huge part of any classic MMORPG, and WoW Forever is no exception. A Guild is basically a community of players who team up to complete Dungeons, Raids, PvP activities, or simply hang out and help each other. You can play WoW solo, of course, but I'd say joining a Guild makes the experience much better, especially if this is your first time playing.
Guilds can have completely different goals. Some focus on competitive Raiding and require you to play at specific times, while others are much more casual. You can find Guilds dedicated to PvP, Roleplaying, leveling, or just socializing. Being in a Guild also means you'll have people to ask for advice, help you with difficult quests, craft items, or run Dungeons with you.
How to Join a Guild in WoW Forever
Finding a Guild isn't complicated, but you should look for one that fits your playstyle. You can ask around in the in-game chat, respond to recruitment messages, or look for Guilds on community Discord servers and websites.
One useful option is the Forever Community Guild Directory, where you can browse recruiting Guilds based on your faction, ruleset, region, language, and preferred activities.
Once you've found a Guild you like, contact one of its members or officers and ask for an invitation. You can then use Guild Chat to talk to other members, organize activities, and ask questions.
Personally, I'd recommend joining a beginner-friendly Guild as early as possible. You don't need to commit to a strict Raiding schedule or even play with other members every day. Just having a group of familiar players around can make leveling much more enjoyable. And if the Guild doesn't suit you, you're always free to leave and find another one.
F.A.Q.
Is WoW Forever free to play?
No, WoW Forever requires an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time. However, you don't need to purchase the game separately, since it's included with your regular WoW subscription. Optional editions offer additional bonuses, including access to the new Skyborne race.
What is the max level in WoW Forever?
The maximum character level in WoW Forever is 60, just like in the original Classic WoW. Reaching level 60 takes time, but leveling is a major part of the experience rather than something you should rush through. Once you get there, you can focus on endgame Dungeons, Raids, PvP, and other activities.
What is the best class for beginners in WoW Forever?
Personally, I'd recommend Hunter or Warlock for complete beginners. Both classes have pets that can help you fight enemies and survive while questing, making solo leveling more forgiving. However, every class is viable, so I'd prioritize whichever playstyle you find interesting.
Can you play WoW Forever solo?
Yes, you can complete most leveling quests, explore Azeroth, level professions, and enjoy plenty of other activities entirely solo. However, Dungeons and Raids are designed for groups, so you'll eventually need other players if you want to experience that content. Joining a Guild is a great option, but it's not mandatory.
What is the difference between WoW Forever and WoW Classic?
WoW Forever builds on the original level 1–60 Classic experience but introduces new zones, quests, Dungeons, Raids, and gameplay systems. It also features modern conveniences like an improved interface, optional HD character models, and the new Legacy progression system. Unlike WoW Classic, which preserves or revisits earlier versions of the game, Forever is designed to keep expanding its version of Azeroth with new content.
