AION 2 Abyss Explained

The Abyss is the place where AION 2’s Elyos-versus-Asmodian rivalry turns into full-fledged faction warfare. It’s far from being a beginner mode. It is a permanent PvPvE zone for both factions where they fight over objectives, farm Abyss Points (further shortened to AP), hunt bosses, and try to ruin each other’s day. Unlike normal zones where PvP is optional, the Abyss is built around hostile faction interaction from the start. Another thing that makes the Abyss different from battlegrounds in other MMOs is that your gear level influences your ability to deal and soak damage. The gear inside the Abyss is not normalized, so even though you’re all the same level, if you see an enemy player dressed in endgame gear coming your way, scram. Now let’s quickly overview the Abyss and its features:

Additional faction-based Abyss activity |
As you can see, Abyss is not just a PvP zone with some extra stuff to do if you’re too weak. A lot of your progress comes from participating in its systems. It’s an endgame zone cause you can exchange your AP for some really good gear that usually outscales your current gear by a large margin and there’s no point in grinding this area early on. For instance, an Archon Decanus Longsword that can be purchased in the Abyss store costs ~126k AP and provides a huge boost of item levels. For me, it was +23 iLvl with just one item. Also, though it’s a PvP zone, you’re not obligated to only go there for it. You can just go and do the daily and weekly quests that award you with AP points for slaying mobs or just flying around.
AION 2 Abyss Requirements
On Global release, the only Abyss area available is Reshanta. You can only access the initial area of the zone called Lower Reshanta at level 45 and a minimum of 1000 Item level, so if you want to get to this region faster, be sure to check out our AION 2 Leveling Guide. In short, Abyss is not something you jump into as soon as you create a character. Check out the Aion 2 Abyss requirements for entering it:
- Level 45
- Minimum of 1000 iLvl
Since this is endgame content, I advise you to have a great build for your class if you want to stay competitive. This is a must, basically. Other non-mandatory things I advise you to also have:
- Important Stigmas unlocked
- Healing and recovery consumables
- Good flight mobility
Thought this was it? No, the info dump continues. Abyss access is time-limited. In the current patch, you can spend only 8 hours per week in the Abyss, so you really don’t want to spend half of that time figuring out what to do. This timer seems a little tight for me, especially on the global release, and it’s like an artificial way to stop players from maxing out the gear too fast before finding out that there’s not much to do in the game. One thing it really does well is that it forces you to plan your route and tasks instead of mindlessly wandering around the map looking for player kills.
How AION 2 Abyss PvP Works

The Abyss mixes PvP and PvE instead of separating them into two completely different activities. Before global release, the AP you farm there could be lost upon character death, and farming AP generally took such a long time that it was really infuriating. No more of that. The only thing you’re losing is your ranking points, but if you’re not someone who’s chasing them, you don’t have to worry. Now it’s a straightforward farming ground where you choose how to do that. Or, well, not you, but your quests. Below are the main Abyss activities you’ll be doing most of the time:
- Killing enemy players
- Completing Abyss Battle Directives
- Participating in Artifact Siege
- Killing Abyss bosses
- Using the Abyss Corridor
- Completing weekly missions
- Earning Abyss Points and Medals
PvP itself also works differently from a normal ground-only MMO fight because AION 2 brings back full aerial combat from the original game. Players can attack from above, disengage vertically, use terrain in three dimensions, and reposition in ways that are impossible in a flat battleground. This means your spatial awareness matters a lot more. Look up sometimes. Somebody can come from above, below, or from behind a piece of floating terrain and wipe you out in cold blood like they’re a bald eagle.
AION 2 Abyss Points
Abyss Points, or AP, are the main progression currency tied to Abyss activities. You earn them from PvP-related content and spend them in the Abyss shop to grow your item level. There are other things in that store, including a loot box and a set of wings, but it’s mostly useful for getting gear. Common Abyss Point sources include:
- Enemy-player kills
- Abyss Command Scrolls/Directives
- Season Weekly Missions
- Field and Abyss bosses
- Artifact Siege
- Abyss Corridor activities
Don’t be in a hurry to ignore Abyss as a PvE player. First of all, it’s a very PvP-heavy game so I just don’t see why you would ignore it, but I’m not judging. Second of all, Abyss Points go into broader character progression, including Stigma Skill progression. This makes the weekly Abyss runs useful even if you’re not trying to become a PvP warlord. The best and most efficient way to farm AP is by stacking objectives when you can. You can take up to 5 quests at the same time, so try to mix and match them and always go for Epic quests, or at least Rare rather than Common ones, as they barely reward you.
AION 2 Artifact Siege
Artifact Siege is one of the main large-scale faction activities in Lower Reshanta. Elyos and Asmodians fight over Artifacts, and these battles turn into full faction clashes rather than local, smaller-scale conflicts. This obviously leads to huge FPS drops even on the most powerful machines, so check out this optimization guide. You can do Artifact Siege in Lower Reshanta from the beginning, so you don’t have to wait for later Abyss layers to participate in one. Usually, this is how the Artifact Siege goes down:
- A group of players gets to the objective
- Area control around the Artifact is established
- Tanks protect healers and ranged classes
- DPS players try to stop enemy players from approaching
Don’t forget that this is very much a vertical game, so controlling airspace is as important as holding ground. Also, please don’t chase the enemies who fly away, leaving the Artifact behind. You get far more from successfully guarding or capturing the Artifact. Ideally, you want to be a part of a clan or at least in a party to be more organized in Artifact Siege. Playing solo is quite hard and often leads to players flying around the field without knowing what to do. Artifact control also connects to other Abyss gameplay mechanics, including the Abyss Corridor. On the KR/TW servers, the Artifact Siege influences faction access and server competition, and the core Artifact system itself is already part of Lower Reshanta.
AION 2 Abyss Bosses
Abyss bosses add the PvE side of PvPvE. Both factions want the boss rewards, which means what starts as a normal boss fight quickly turns into another full faction fight within seconds. This activity is quite chaotic and fun, but less organized, so if you’re a solo player, you’ll probably prefer this over Artifact Siege. During an Abyss boss fight, your group usually needs to handle:
- Boss damage
- Enemy pressure
- Healer protection
- Clearing adds
Later updates increased boss and Artifact stats several times because players were killing them too quickly, which gives you a pretty good idea of how important these targets are to the Abyss economy. One of the biggest mistakes players often make is tunneling the boss while the enemy faction is competing for it. If another group owns the position, killing the boss faster doesn’t matter much when your entire team gets wiped five seconds before getting the reward.

AION 2 Abyss PvP Gear
Progressing the Abyss eventually leads to you getting dedicated PvP gear. The system has several gear tiers, with stronger sets requiring more AP and Medals. Higher tiers also get stronger Abyss-specific set bonuses, so this isn’t the same as PvE gear. If you are an avid Abyss player, you’ll find PvP-specific equipment especially important because gear difference is a key factor in winning fights. This is not a normalized PvP mode, so someone with significantly better PvP progression will be much stronger than you. It creates a FOMO factor cause while you’re away or even skipping full weeks of Abyss grind, your enemy faction doesn’t stop grinding. If you want to play AION 2 for a long time, ignoring Abyss is something I wouldn’t recommend doing. I hope that in the future, the devs will introduce some catch-up mechanic, but for now you have to grind it weekly.
Best Classes for AION 2 Abyss PvP

In Abyss PvP, the meta is different from that of Arena. In large faction fights, it’s important to have AoE, mobility, healing, and CC in your skill set, compared to small-scale PvP, which is more focused on single-target burst damage. This isn’t the best AION 2 classes tier list, as we have a separate article for that,
|
Class |
What they’re responsible for in Abyss |
|
Cleric/Chanter |
Healing, buffs and debuffs, utility |
|
Templar/Gladiator |
Durability, initiation, CC |
|
Ranger/Sorcerer/Spiritmaster/Chanter |
Backline pressure, AoE |
|
Assassin |
Burst, isolated target kills |
Generally, all of the classes are quite viable in the Abyss, but some perform a far more important role than others. As you can see, Assassin isn’t that great for the Abyss due to its focus on single targets. Most Assassins play as healer killers, trying to sneak into the enemy’s backline. As for healers, you won’t get far without them, so guard them well. With simple math, the more alive players you have, the higher the chances are of winning Artifact or killing a boss.
AION 2 Abyss PvP Tips and Tricks
The Abyss rewards people who play around the faction and the objective, not people who chase kills. You’ll get plenty of kills naturally anyway if your group controls the important areas. Chasing a low-HP player away from your team usually just gets you baited into five of their friends. Here are a few AION 2 Abyss PvP tips and tricks:
- Don’t Stray from Your Group: Isolated targets are much easier to focus, even if your enemies don’t have dedicated Assassins for that
- Protect Healers: You will feel it if even one healer is downed really quickly, I promise you
- Save Mobility Skills for Disengaging: It can be tempting to fly in at high speed to quickly kill a low-HP target, and sometimes it’s worth doing it, but more often than not this results in you dying with no means to escape damage
- Don’t Ignore Verticality: You can fly in this game, so don’t play as a pedestrian
- Fight around Objectives: Don’t fight for nothing even if there’s a crowd of enemies pinned down. You’ll just drain your resources for nothing
- Have a Cooldown Discipline: Don’t dump your every skill to deal damage quickly or to heal up your group, unless they’re really low. This game has an answer for almost every skill in the game, so play it like a rock-paper-scissors game
- Don’t Chase Forever: If you see an enemy within your reach who tries to escape the fight and they’re low, you can chase them only if you’re sure that you can take them down quickly. If not, you just waste your time and weaken your team
The last point is the most important one. If somebody escapes and you have to fly halfway across Reshanta to catch them, you already lost, even if you eventually get them. This is a team activity, so play it like a team. I’m gonna make a semi-stupid comparison, but imagine if a real soldier would chase a single target, straying away from their squad. Though this is just a game, in Abyss you have to keep your ground and listen to the squad leader. If you manage to grasp this simple concept, you’re already better than half of the archer players.
