How XP works in Modern Warfare 4

Modern Warfare 4 doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel with its Multiplayer progression system — if you’ve played other Call of Duty games, you already know how it works. Players get to earn XP by playing and completing various objectives, including both actual tasks and simple kills.

Note that your Multiplayer XP and DMZ XP are two different systems. DMZ has its own 70-level progression bar with a separate set of tasks and rewards. However, DMZ XP still contributes to your Multiplayer XP, but it doesn’t work in the opposite direction.

So, the core Multiplayer mode features a long progression meter starting with level one and ending at level 55, with each level offering new unlockable rewards: loadouts, weapons, equipment, field upgrades, perks, and killstreaks.

However, reaching level 55 is actually only the starting point of the journey. After that, you get two Prestige options to choose from.

  • Classic Prestige resets your level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress but offers a 20% XP boost as well as bonus cosmetic rewards and a Permanent Unlock Token.
  • Regular Prestige also restarts your progression, but keeps all of the level unlocks and Create-a-Class content, although you don’t get the bonuses offered by Classic Prestige.

Overall, there are 10 levels of Prestige. If you play long enough and grind through that as well, you enter the true endgame state called Prestige Master.

This leveling system replaces the constant Prestige resets with a simple progression bar that finishes at level 1,000. At first, Prestige Master rewards are provided every five to ten Levels up. However, once you reach Level 99, they become even less frequent, providing stuff only every 25 levels. Prestige Legend, achieved at level 1,000, is the current level cap.

As you can clearly see, there are always reasons to grind XP in MW4, and the cap is so high that most players will never reach it unless they’re willing to spend literal months farming XP non-stop. The question is: how do you unlock all the cool stuff as quickly as possible?

How to Level Up Quickly in Modern Warfare 4

Completing All Daily Challenges

No matter which online game you choose, Daily Challenges are always going to offer some of the most lucrative rewards. The developers really want to guarantee that you log in consistently and play the game regularly, and they’re going to incentivize that behavior until the pattern is set for good.

In the case of Modern Warfare 4, Daily Challenges are about what you expect: you get three simple tasks per day, and each of them rewards you with 2,500 XP. If you complete all three, you get an extra 10,000 XP on top of it. The challenges themselves aren’t particularly inventive: land a few headshots, kill some enemies with a particular type of weapon, and so on. If you don’t like one of them, you are allowed to reroll it once. You still might get something suboptimal, but that’s just how life is.

What’s crucial is completing all three of them, because the extra bonus is way too good to pass up. Considering that completion shouldn’t take too long, Daily Challenges are by far the most consistent way to earn solid chunks of XP.

Prioritizing Objective Modes

One unfortunate truth about XP in MW4 is that some Core Multiplayer modes are just better than others when it comes to leveling. Domination, Hardpoint, and Kill Confirmed enable you to earn XP from both Objectives and normal kills, so you simply have more opportunities compared to highly popular Team Deathmatch, for instance.

Just learn a few maps and perform consistently enough, and you’ll see your results improve, leading to better XP scores overall. Make sure to focus on objectives and not chase random kills. Sometimes this will contradict your Daily Challenges, so there’s no definitive answer here — it all depends on the risk-reward ratio in each particular case.

Action over Tactics

Another unfortunate truth behind MW4 progression is that it only rewards you for measurable results, and not overall smart moves and gameplay decisions.

You can secure an amazing spot for your team in Ground War, ensuring that no enemy feels comfortable even sneezing in your general direction, and that will earn you nothing. Now try logging in a completely mindless massacre in Transit 213, and you’ll likely get something that the game recognizes, like kills, headshots, and so on.

Think of it this way: in any mode, there is time spent on actual shootouts, and there is time spent on everything else. Moving from one place to another, exploring locations, waiting for the round to be over — all of it is idle time that the game currently doesn’t really reward. If you want to level up as quickly as possible, you will have to minimize that.

Essentially, this is where you have to question yourself: is it even fun to grind levels the optimal way? If the answer is no, then you should probably stick with what you like about Modern Warfare 4 — otherwise you’ll burn yourself out for a bunch of levels that won’t mean much since you don’t get any satisfaction out of the game itself.

Doubling Down on Double XP

If you have stockpiled a bunch of tokens from the previous title, then you’ll have no problem leveling up, especially considering how player-friendly the tokens are these days, counting only the actual playtime.

Obviously, nothing can boost your progress quite as much as doubling the XP earning rate, so try to make these even more effective by playing the best modes and performing well. Speaking of which…

Consistent Performance

You might think that it’s not particularly useful advice — git gud never really helps. But the thing is that you don’t need to be better than most players to get good XPM in Modern Warfare 4 — you just need to stay at a consistently decent level so that you don’t spontaneously collapse during a crucial point in Hardpoint after activating a valuable Double XP Token.

If you can follow the meta and be good at using the best current weapon, great. But if you find more success with something else entirely, and you know that re-learning would take a while, you probably should stick with what you know best. A mediocre rifle that regularly earns you Killstreaks is better than a meta weapon that you simply don’t find comfortable. Play to your strengths and learn a bit more about how to do things you’re already good at better and faster.

At the same time, if you find a particularly useful trick, learning it won’t hurt as long as practice mode is not going to devour most of your playtime. Remember that your Field, Lethal, and Tactical equipment can provide some passive XP bonuses, so pick upgrades thoughtfully.

What are the Leveling Rewards in Modern Warfare 4?

Now that you know the best leveling strategies, you might be wondering if the rewards are even worth the effort. It is fair to say that hardcore fans will play the game no matter what, and the progression system just further incentivizes them to do so.

However, what if you are a casual player who is only interested in having a good time with friends? I’d say, MW4 progression is still relevant for you, although it does lose its importance after a certain point. Essentially, no matter what type of player you are, the initial 55 levels will unlock some new weapons and tools that are interesting to try out. Additional content is always a good thing, and even if you end up disliking most of what you get from leveling, some of it might stick with you.

The road to level 55 is paved with 24 unlockable weapons, including:

  • 7 Assault Rifles (M4, Hyeon Burst, Patriot XMR, Kastov 762, Oden, Axion, Cronen Squall)
  • 4 SMGs (VEL 46, WZ.55 Striga, PPSh-41, X-58 Nyx)
  • 3 Launchers (RPG-8, JOKR, PM-40 Anvil)
  • 3 Pistols (Krait P68, .50 GS, Mojave .357)
  • 2 LMGs (Type 73, APOC-338)
  • 2 Marksman Rifles (Oris 8.6, Mosin-Nagant)
  • 2 Sniper Rifles (Astaroth .57, Signal 50)
  • 1 Shotgun (Warlord)

Aside from all sorts of cool guns, leveling rewards you with multiple useful tools and perks:

  • Two Default Loadouts (Demolition and Sniper)
  • An option to Create a Class
  • 16 Equipment pieces (Drill Charge, Snapshot Grenade, Proximity Mine, Concussion Grenade, Zip Gun, Trip Wire, Heartbeat Sensor, Thermite, Molotov Cocktail, Shock Stick, Claymore, Decoy Grenade, C4, Stim, Throwing Knife, Screaming Mine)
  • 14 Killstreaks (Bomb Glider, Care Package, Impact Warhead, Wheelson, Crossfire, Missile Salvo, Combat Drone, Counter UAV, Deathstalker, Railgun Sentry, Advanced UAV, Argonaut, Gunship, Air Lockdown)
  • 12 Perks (High Alert, Battle Hardened, Bomb Squad, Fast Hands, Ghost, Scavenger, Ninja, Resupply, Tracker, Cold-Blooded, Birdseye, Kill Chain)
  • 10 Field Upgrades (Munitions Box, SAM Airburst Turret, Riot Shield, Trophy System, Seeker Drone, Inflatable Decoy, Smoke Wall, Recon Drone, Razor Wire Trap, Tactical Insertion)

To put it simply, the more you play, the more variety you get, so make sure to at least unlock all of these.

F.A.Q.

What are the best leveling maps in Modern Warfare 4?

You want to pick maps that don’t require a lot of movement to get into action — something like Transit 213 works great. The most important thing is the game mode, however — choose objective-oriented ones like Kill Confirmed, Hardpoint, or Domination so that you earn XP for kills as well as the objectives themselves.

What are the best ways to earn XP in Modern Warfare 4?

Playing Objective 6v6 Modes like Domination and completing Daily Challenges are the best ways to earn XP. Make sure to complete all three of your Daily Challenges to get a free 10,000 XP boost — it is incredibly valuable, especially in the long run.

How many player levels are there in Modern Warfare 4?

The baseline progression bar features 55 levels, each unlocking a new feature, tool, or a weapon. However, your leveling doesn’t stop after you reach level 55 — instead, you enter Prestige mode, which will take you an incredibly long time to complete if you ever plan on doing so.

How many Prestige levels are there in Modern Warfare 4?

There are 10 Prestige levels in Modern Warfare 4. After you’ve completed your 10th, you enter a new Prestige System called Prestige Master, which offers a massive 1,000-level grind. If you manage to complete that, the progression truly stops — at least in the current version of the game. That said, reaching that endpoint is incredibly difficult, so don’t get your hopes up high.
