Modern Warfare 4 Maps Overview

According to the official Modern Warfare 4 roadmap, the game will have 20 maps available for playing on October 23, as well as an extra one (Shipment) added on October 27:

  • 12 + 1 Core maps (6v6)
  • 4 Gunfight maps
  • 3 Ground War maps
  • Kill Block

As well as many other players, I’ve already had the opportunity to test out six Core Multiplayer maps as well as two out of three Ground War maps. As for the rest, the situation is a bit mixed.

The devs have provided some crucial info on the rest of the Core maps, even though they aren’t playable yet. Unfortunately, the dev team offered basically no information on the Gunfight maps so far, so there isn’t much to cover aside from their names: Smuggler, NYC, Cafe, and Library. As for the Kill Block, the whole point of the mode is to create a new unique combination out of existing map blocks — no guide can truly help you out as each particular match will likely be fully unique.

This is why, for the purposes of this article, I’m going to focus on the Core maps as well as Ground War ones.

Core Modern Warfare 4 Maps

Before I get to describing all of the Modern Warfare 4 Core maps, I have to acknowledge the obvious: so far, I’ve only been able to personally test some of these maps, as the rest aren’t available before October 23. Still, there’s a decent amount of information available, and it’s not too difficult to set some expectations before players can test these out themselves.

Overall, I feel like Modern Warfare 4 does a good job with its maps, although currently there is a lack of some long-range-friendly options. The maps I’ve played are designed well and provide exactly what they promise: either a lot of quick action in enclosed spaces, or a fair mix between tactical maneuvers and direct combat.

Cachette

Cachette is a rural warehouse area with containers and some heavy machinery, clearly designed to feel a bit constricted and troublesome for those who love having a clear view of their enemy. There are many different paths to try out so that you can surprise your opponent (and even yourself at times) and turn the tide of the combat in your favor.

If you’re in for some tactical movements and clean flanking options, Cachette has you covered. It is also really rewarding if you learn its secrets. Earning kills by jumping on certain containers that no one else even considered is satisfying. The cool part is that even if you are an experienced player who still educates themselves on how Cachette functions, you get to show off your reaction time in close range, which sometimes looks quite sick.

Coal

Coal is a map set in an old Soviet coal processing plant. From what I’ve seen, it offers quite a bit of verticality and a few very interesting chokepoints — I’m especially intrigued by how the second-floor tunnel will work out in multiplayer. Even from screenshots alone, you can see how messy the map can be, and that means lots of opportunities for those who are willing to experiment with their loadout.

Lithium

Lithium is located in a sunny Mexican processing facility, meaning that you won’t have many problems with opponents who are trying to be sneaky. Instead, it is mostly about being better at actual shooting at mid-range and knowing the best cover spots with decent sightlines.

As always, learning the map is very helpful, but this time it’s far more difficult to get away with sudden flanking, so most of it comes down to being better at shooting. That said, there are several cool tricks you can use to your advantage — namely, controllable garage doors and a nearby truck that you can get into for cover.

Lotus

Lotus is a Korean village area absolutely packed with random cover options: from abandoned vehicles to unused containers. It is essentially a street surrounded by multiple buildings with large windows, punishing anyone who dares to try and cross it. The map is all about securing these good spots and making sure no one gets up close to you.

As far as weapons go, close- and mid-range options are still preferable because of how difficult it is to shoot someone without getting right in their face, but there are good opportunities to show off your marksmanship as long as you secure one of the better spots.

Mumbai

Mumbai is probably going to be the most colorful map in Modern Warfare 4, but it’s hard to say a lot about it in terms of gameplay. It is clear that the devs intend to make it a tight, enclosed area with a rail line, but I am not feeling confident enough to predict how the latter will come into play.

Munition

Munition looks tough, and for a good reason — it is a map designed to show you what it’s like to fight inside an active North Korean command facility. The devs highlighted many different spots you will be able to take advantage of, like a linked skybridge, crane, water tower, various hangars and monitoring rooms, as well as a large eponymous munitions depot. This particular map sounds like it has a lot to offer in terms of variety, but I won’t be too optimistic before I get to test it out personally.

Nautical

From what I can tell so far, Nautical is one of the most creative maps in the entire game, because it is set on a big South Korean ferry. You get a bunch of space filled with vehicles on the lower deck, and likely a few extra floors with multiple rooms to work with. The only concern I have is that the design might be a bit limiting and the map turns out to be imbalanced because of it, but my expectations are very high.

Reactor U92

A nuclear reactor is about as cool as a Call of Duty map can be, and if you add the fact that its containment pool is in the process of an active meltdown, it means that the devs don’t pull their punches with this one. Maybe players are incentivized to make some hard choices: do I run straight through the contaminated area to get an advantage, or am I going to act safely and try to win through other means? At least that’s something that I hope to see.

Rooftops

Rooftops is located on the rooftop of a New York hotel, and it’s somehow one of the more “standard” maps in the game. The map is basically a large rectangle with several elevated spots and a balanced mix between closed-off rooms and open spaces.

It rewards most playstyles equally and provides options for rapidly turning the battle in your favor by using flanking options like the catwalk or surprise attacks from the scaffolding.

Sentry

You can’t have zero snowy maps on release, so Sentry fulfills that role. It is yet another North Korean military base with a bunch of strategic locations like a maintenance garage, generator room, command center, and substation, as well as a few partially destroyed barracks. I imagine that low visibility is going to be the main game mechanic here, but the devs might have something else in mind.

Shipment

Coming late to the party, Shipment is probably one of the most popular CoD maps among fans, so I expect it to be just as populated as it was in previous titles. It was never a good one from a balance standpoint, but that’s why people love it, and it’s probably the closest a Core map can get to pure casual fun and chaos.

I see why the devs decided to add it separately, because it is not intended to feel like a part of the base experience. I’m curious to see how this version of Shipment turns out to be and if it manages to maintain its spot in people’s hearts or gets overshadowed by something else.

Silkworm

Silkworm is probably my favorite map so far. Located in the South Korean shopping district, it offers some fast-paced action as well as lots of tactical decisions to make. Getting through the streets never feels safe, as the opponents can hide behind every corner.

Grenades become very valuable because they can turn abandoned vehicles into explosive traps. The roleplay element of jumping into a random building and frantically looking around to not get immediately shot also adds to the tension. Admittedly, long-range shooting is a bit difficult here due to all the obstacles, but you can’t have it all in one map.

Transit 213

Transit 213 is probably the tightest map I’ve seen in the game so far, and it rules. This small abandoned Indian parking lot is just the perfect playground for those who like to show off their reaction time, accuracy, and smart grenade usage.

The rounds are quick and chaotic, and you are immediately locked in as soon as the map loads. You have to think quickly, and that isn’t easy, so one moment you feel like you’ve secured an amazing spot for your team, only to get immediately punished the very next second.

One of the benefits of Transit 213 is that there isn’t much to learn about it, and you can simply get to know all about it in just a few quick rounds. Essentially, if you don’t have much time and just want to land some juicy shots and move on with your day, this is a perfect map for you.

Modern Warfare 4 Ground War Maps

Forest

So far, Forest is the only Ground War map that wasn’t available for players. There also isn’t much information about it coming from the devs, aside from a screenshot showing a gas station with a destroyed vehicle nearby, all located within the eponymous forest. I can imagine the area is going to be a mix between large swaths of trees and random locations of interest.

Imjin Farmlands

Imjin Farmlands is mostly a flat map with a few key mills located on it so that snipers can have their fun. Securing said mills is one of the priorities, although getting there is not going to be easy when enemy vehicles are riding (and flying) all around the area.

Imjin Farmlands feel closest to classic war movies, where everything happens in a large open field, and you can see both armies just running at each other. Staying alive on your feet is problematic, but that’s part of the fun.

Wolves Stadium

Wolves Stadium is a large urban area map that offers a great variety of different locations. You have open theaters, the stadium itself, random streets and alleys, and all of it is torn to shreds during the match thanks to all the vehicles riding around. Unlike Imjin Farmlands, this map offers quite a lot of verticality, and you can be far more creative with your positioning.
