Modern Warfare 4 Weapon Tier List

According to the official Call of Duty weapon overview, MW4 launches with 8 assault rifles, 5 SMGs, 2 shotguns, 3 LMGs, 3 marksman rifles, and 3 sniper rifles. The other 9 weapons include pistols, launchers, and a knife.
Now, this tier list is a hypothetical one; it’s based on the tier list of weapons for DMZ and the one from the MP beta. Of course, Warzone is a different beast, and it will be covered separately. Since MW2019, over the years it has become pretty easy to tell which guns will peak, especially in season 1, when the number of guns is still fairly manageable and balanced.

While I will explain what each tier means below, if you want the best pick for MP, a jack of all trades with as few downsides as possible, then I suggest you take a look at the S-tier Assault Rifles. They have it all - the damage, recoil, fire rate; it’s all there. My picks also overlap with the leading weapons on the WZStats MW4 rankings, although I've given more thought to what you would use at mid-close range for 6v6 maps mostly.
How This MW4 Weapon Tier List Works
I've ranked all Modern Warfare 4 weapons based on their damage, fire rate, recoil, mobility, and overall usefulness in Multiplayer. I'm mainly focusing on regular 6v6 matches, where winning gunfights quickly and moving between objectives matters more than having the biggest magazine or longest effective range.
All guns in MW come with their own stats, and even the returning guns have had their numbers adjusted. So, when ranking guns, you gotta look at the base stats first and then how much these guns are used. For example, despite the fact that you had a decent range of assault rifles in the beta, everyone pretty much stuck to using the M4.
With that being said, here’s what each tier means in my tier list:
|
Tier |
Description |
|
S-Tier |
The best MW4 weapons overall. Either best in class or best overall by having the best combination of stats right out of the gate. |
|
A-Tier |
Highly effective guns with great stats, but maybe a bit more skill-dependent. |
|
B-Tier |
These are great middle-tier weapons for variety picks and leveling. If you’re done playing with S-tier, these will still be nice to level up. |
|
C-Tier |
Below-average weapons would be difficult to play with or main. Have sub-par stats or awkward mechanics. |
|
D-Tier |
Meme picks |
At this point, we don’t have access to the MP, and the tier list is pretty much hypothetical. But I will update it as soon as the community chooses its favorite weapons in this year’s CoD.
Best Guns in Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer
The best weapons in MW4 are the easiest to use and level up. Even someone who doesn’t have that great of a reaction time in such a fast-paced multiplayer game will still find tons of joy playing with these guns. I've narrowed the full list down to six weapons worth checking out. I would consider the M4 and ISO Nightshade meta, which is not that different from Dexerto's MW4 weapon tier list, which means I’m gotta be onto something here, right?
M4 - Best Overall Weapon

The M4 is my number one choice for Multiplayer. It fires at 810 RPM, has a standard 30-round magazine, and you just can’t go wrong with it. It’s basically a benchmark for gun builds because, with near-ideal stats, you can make it either a long-range weapon with more damage and penetration or a short-barreled SMG-like gun with instant ADS and sprint-to-aim speeds. Even if the devs nerf this gun, its still not going to be worse due to how versatile it is.
ISO Nightshade - Best SMG

SMGs have always been in the meta since MW19’s MP9. This year, ISO Nightshade takes the cake. Its 923 RPM fire rate, mobility, and manageable recoil make it ideal for clearing rooms and winning close-range fights. You also unlock it at Level 4, which is a huge plus in my book. Players will absolutely be laser-beaming others with this thing
Kastov 762 - Best High-Damage Assault Rifle

The Kastov 762 and its harder-hitting 7.62mm rounds are an alternative to the M4 if you want a bit more damage. Its 600 RPM fire rate is lower compared to the M4, and the weapon has quite a kick in terms of recoil, but I actually prefer it that way. There’s something so satisfying about seeing how this gun behaves. It’s crunchy, loud, and deadly. Classically, the AK platform is highly modifiable, and so you got lots of options there to get rid of the recoil or make it use 5.45 caliber rounds for a higher fire rate.
Type 73 - Best LMG

The Type 73 combines 821 RPM with a 60-round magazine, giving you plenty of ammunition for longer gunfights or prefire. Yes, it's heavy, but sometimes you just want to mow down your enemies that hide behind closed doors or thin wooden walls. In a game where reaction usually wins, people with no reaction just hold down the fire button with an LMG equipped and watch enemy players get sent to the spawn point.
Oris 8.6 - Best Marksman Rifle

The Oris 8.6 is my favorite precision weapon on this list. Everybody loves a bolt-action rifle, and this is the best one in MW4. It’s not as heavy as some of those sniper rifles, which means you can put on a smaller scope and stand your ground in mid-range fights. The bolt-action is pretty quick, so quick-scoping is back in the menu, boys!
Signal 50 - Best Sniper Rifle

For traditional sniping, I'd go with the Signal 50. It’s got everything you love - one-shot, one-kill attitude, all kinds of long-range scopes that you could wish for, but honestly, it’s much nicer to use in Warzone or DMZ to break armor on players or one-tap them from a distance to start a fight.

F.A.Q.
What is the best gun in Modern Warfare 4?
The M4 is my top overall pick thanks to its combination of fire rate, versatility, and reliable handling. It should work well across most Multiplayer maps without needing an overly specialized loadout.
What is the best SMG in MW4?
The ISO Nightshade takes first place for its fast firing speed and excellent close-range potential. The X-58 Nyx and PPSh-41 are also worth considering, particularly for players who enjoy aggressive flanking. Snipers can choose between the KG-7 Vulcan, Signal 50 and some Marksman Rifles.
How many weapons are in Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer?
Modern Warfare 4 launches with 33 weapons, including 24 primary weapons, 4 pistols, 4 launchers, and 1 melee weapon. All of them are included in our tier list.
What weapon should I level up first in MW4?
I'd start with the ISO Nightshade since it's available at Level 4 and should be useful on smaller Multiplayer maps. The M4 unlocks at Level 14 and would be my next priority for a more versatile loadout.
