How Mastery Camos Work in Modern Warfare 4

Modern Warfare 4 has 9 Mastery Camos to unlock across Multiplayer, DMZ, and Warzone. This time, you have a shared weapon camo progression system, meaning you can complete many of the challenges in whichever mode you prefer.

By the way, if you’re thinking about which weapon to start grinding camos with, check out my MW4 Weapons Tier List. In there, I name the most comfortable and easy gun to start unlocking and doing camo challenges with.

This game changes how you progress through weapon camos. Instead of having completely separate camo grinds for every mode, you now have one shared progression track. Although they still technically belong to different modes. This means I can level up my guns and complete Special Camo challenges in Multiplayer or DMZ without having to repeat them in the other mode. Warzone joins this system in Season 1.

There are several camo tiers you have to complete before unlocking the actual Mastery Camos. Here's how the progression works:

Camo Tier

How to Unlock

Military

Unlock 8 camos per weapon by leveling it up.

Special

Complete 3 weapon-specific challenges after reaching the required weapon levels.

Gold

Unlock all Military and Special Camos, then complete a Gold challenge.

Platinum

Unlock Gold for every weapon in the same class, then complete a class-specific challenge.

Harmonic Break

Complete Platinum challenges for 33 weapons, then finish the Harmonic Break challenge.

Divergence

Complete 33 Harmonic Break challenges.

Mastery

Unlock Divergence, then complete the three sequential Mastery challenges for each mode.

Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break, and Divergence are technically Completionist Camos rather than the final Mastery Camos. Still, they're mandatory for progressing to the highest tier.

I think the biggest improvement according to the official progression blog post is having the option to switch between Multiplayer and DMZ for the earlier challenges. For example, Gold requires 15 eliminations in one Multiplayer match or 100 eliminations in one DMZ deployment. You can pick whichever objective works better for you rather than forcing yourself into a single mode.

All Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer Mastery Camos

Multiplayer has three Mastery Camos, with Orion Reforged being the final reward. You unlock them one after another, starting with Mercurial Drift. Unlike the earlier weapon-specific challenges, these objectives revolve around your overall combat performance, so I would recommend sticking to whichever weapons you're most comfortable using.

Here are all the MW4 Multiplayer Mastery Camo challenges:

Mastery Camo

Unlock Requirement

Mercurial Drift

Unlock Divergence, then get 10 kills in a match 250 times.

Polyatomic Reforged

Unlock Mercurial Drift, then get 3 kills without taking damage 300 times.

Orion Reforged

Unlock Polyatomic Reforged, then get 5 kills without dying 500 times.

Mercurial Drift

Mercurial Drift is the first Multiplayer Mastery Camo, featuring a bright, animated combination of pink, gold, and orange. You need to unlock Divergence first, then complete the 10-kill match challenge 250 times. For this one, I'd focus on regular Multiplayer matches where getting at least 10 eliminations is fairly easy.

Polyatomic Reforged

Polyatomic Reforged brings back the iconic purple geometric design. Its challenge is a lot trickier because you need 3 kills without taking damage 300 times. I would recommend playing more carefully and avoiding unnecessary close-range fights. Taking even a little damage can ruin your attempt, so positioning matters more than usual.

Orion Reforged

Orion Reforged is the final Multiplayer Mastery Camo, featuring a colorful cosmic animation. To unlock it, you need 5 kills without dying 500 times after obtaining Polyatomic Reforged. This is probably where I'd spend most of my Multiplayer grinding time, since consistency matters much more than having an occasional high-kill match.

All Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Mastery Camos

DMZ also features three exclusive Mastery Camos, but their challenges are completely different from Multiplayer. Instead of focusing on killstreaks, you'll be fighting tougher AI enemies, extracting valuable items, and using high-rarity weapons. Personally, I think this is the more interesting set, although the final challenge looks pretty ridiculous in terms of the number of kills required.

Here are all MW4 DMZ Mastery Camos and their requirements:

Mastery Camo

Unlock Requirement

Chiral

Unlock Divergence, then kill 2,500 Tier 3 or higher enemies.

Ripple Tide

Unlock Chiral, then extract 2 LT dog tags in one deployment 50 times.

Helio

Unlock Ripple Tide, then get 25,000 kills using Legendary weapons on a max-level Operator.

Chiral

Chiral is the first DMZ Mastery Camo, featuring a dark red animated finish. You need to kill 2,500 Tier 3+ enemies to unlock it. Tie 3 enemies can be found in the most secure location on the map. Check places like the 14th Political Prison, Haneul Nuclear Reactor, and other areas highlighted in red on the map.

Ripple Tide

Ripple Tide has an animated black and orange design. To get it, you must extract 2 LT dog tags in a single deployment 50 times. The important part here is that you need both tags during the same deployment, so extracting with just one won't complete an attempt. I'd prioritize collecting the required tags and leaving safely rather than staying around for unnecessary fights.

Helio

Helio is the final DMZ Mastery Camo, featuring a bright metallic red finish. Its challenge requires 25,000 kills with Legendary weapons while using a max-level Operator. That's an enormous number, even by Call of Duty standards. My advice is to focus on reliable Legendary weapons and avoid losing your leveled Operator, since maintaining the required setup is just as important as farming kills.

All Modern Warfare 4 Warzone Mastery Camos

Warzone has three more Mastery Camos, although none of their exact challenges have been revealed yet. These become available with Season 1, when MW4 weapon progression is integrated into Warzone. For now, we know their names and the order in which they're unlocked.

Mastery Camo

Unlock Requirement

Parallax

Classified until Season 1

Damascus Reforged

Classified until Season 1

Empyros

Classified until Season 1

Parallax features a green and purple animated finish, while Damascus Reforged brings back a recognizable camo from the original Modern Warfare. Empyros is the final Warzone Mastery Camo, with a bright blue and pink animated design. I'll update this section with the exact challenges once they're available in-game. Until then, I recommend working on the shared weapon progression in Multiplayer or DMZ, so you don't have to start from scratch when Warzone Season 1 arrives.

How to Unlock Weapon Prestige Camos in MW4

Apart from the nine main Mastery Camos, Modern Warfare 4 also has four Weapon Prestige Camos. These are all different versions of Pyroclast, an evolving weapon skin that changes its appearance as you progress. Unlike regular Mastery Camos, you unlock these by leveling and prestiging individual weapons.

Here's how to get every Pyroclast camo:

Weapon Prestige Camo

Unlock Requirement

Pyroclast

Reach Weapon Prestige 1 Level 1.

Pyroclast Terminus

Reach the maximum level in Weapon Prestige 1.

Pyroclast Scatter

Reach Weapon Prestige Master Level 150.

Pyroclast Cascade

Reach Weapon Prestige Master Level 250.

To start Weapon Prestige, you first have to reach your weapon's maximum level. Entering Weapon Prestige 1 resets its level and relocks most attachments, but you keep your earned camos and other weapon customization. After maxing it out again, you'll automatically enter Weapon Prestige Master without another level reset.

Personally, I'd treat these as a separate long-term grind. They're worth working on with weapons you already use regularly, especially since reaching Prestige Master Level 250 takes a lot of Weapon XP.

Fastest Way to Unlock Mastery Camos in MW4

If you're planning to collect every Mastery Camo, I would start with leveling all weapons and completing their Special challenges before worrying about the final rewards. You need to get through the Completionist tiers anyway, so there's no point focusing on one favorite gun while ignoring everything else.

Here are my recommendations for making the grind easier:

  • Use Double Weapon XP Tokens: Military Camos unlock through weapon levels, so faster leveling means faster progress.
  • Complete Special challenges while leveling: Check each weapon's requirements and work on them as soon as they become available.
  • Switch between Multiplayer and DMZ: Some challenges are easier against AI, while others are faster against players. Use whichever mode suits the objective.
  • Finish one weapon class at a time: Platinum requires Gold across the entire class, so I'd rather finish all Assault Rifles before moving on to SMGs.
  • Save your favorite loadouts for Mastery challenges: Once Divergence is unlocked, prioritize weapons that help you complete the final objectives consistently.
  • Work on Weapon Prestige alongside other challenges: You can make progress toward the Pyroclast variants while grinding other camos instead of leaving all weapon leveling until later.

My biggest recommendation is to avoid rushing the early stages. The complete Mastery Camo grind is already long enough, and planning which weapons and challenges to complete first will save you a lot of unnecessary matches.
