Legacy Runewords Explained

Season 15 is full of shameless nostalgia. Legacy Uniques, which are returning items from the Diablo franchise’s history, are a big part of this season, but it turns out that these are not the only items making a comeback. Along with Legacy Uniques, developers shadowdropped Legacy Runewords, which are the OG Runewords from Diablo II days. Much like before, they are used to craft Unique gear by transmuting Runes with common items in the Horadric Cube. All classic items like Stealth and Enigma are making a comeback to the game, and they’re as good as they were before. Do note that the naming can be quite confusing, since the Ritual and Invocation Runewords are still present in the game. To make things easier, these new Legacy Runewords drop at Unique quality, so you won’t mistake them with normal Runewords. They also have various effects and can be socketed much like normal ones, but their true power lies in creating new Unique gear. Just so you understand the difference:

Just so we are on the same page, this guide is not about the effects of Legacy Runewords, although they have Ritual and Invocation effects tied to them. In this guide, I only focus on what you can craft by using these Legacy Runes, in order to avoid confusion. 

All Diablo 4 Legacy Runes Recipes

There are currently 19 known Legacy Runewords in Season 15. Most likely, that’s all of them. Several recipes have multiple possible base types, like a one-handed sword or a one-handed axe, so the actual number of craftable item variants is much higher than 19, but the Rune recipes themselves stay the same, and also produce the same Unique. The most important thing is matching the Rune combination with a valid base item, cause if you mix Jah + Ith + Ber together with a common sword, it won’t turn into Enigma, obviously. In the current patch 3.2.1, we have the following recipes:

Some Runewords are much less restrictive than others. Spirit can be made from several weapons and off-hands, while Lore is always a helm and Enigma is always a chestpiece. The finished Unique also scales from the base gear you use, so there’s no point in keeping a common chest armor that dropped when you were level 13. If you want to create Enigma in the endgame, you’ll need at least an 850 item level.

How to Craft Uniques from Legacy Runes in the Horadric Cube

The actual crafting process is pretty easy once you figure it out. One common misconception is that people think that you just need to slot these Runewords into your gear, much like Soul Splinters, and that’ll turn it into a Unique. This sounds semi-reasonable, but there are recipes that require 5 Runewords, and I ain’t seen a 5-socket sword yet. You only need to have a valid Common base item and the correct Runes. Once everything is inside the Horadric Cube, the recipe will initially appear as ???, but the Transmute option becomes available when the combination is valid. Let’s take a look at the process by using Stealth as an example:

1. Choose the Runeword: For example, Stealth uses Tal + Eth.
2. Find a valid Common base: Stealth needs Chest Armor
3. Horadric Cube Transmuting: Put the base gear and required runes into the Horadric Cube
4. Check that Transmute becomes available: Hidden recipes will appear as ??? at first
5. Click Transmute: The base item is consumed and replaced by the Runeword Unique

And that’s how you make Stealth, which is the best early-game Unique you can get. Put Ort + Eth together with a Bow or Crossbow, and you get Zephyr. The Runewords are written in their familiar Diablo 2 order throughout this guide for clarity, but current live testing proves that the Cube itself doesn’t care about the insertion order as in Diablo 2.

Best Diablo 4 Runeword Uniques to Craft First

Even though all Legacy Runewords are of Unique quality, some are harder to get than others. Not every Runeword deserves your Runes the second you can craft it. There are some workhorses that are extremely cheap and can carry you through leveling, while others require rarer Runes that you might regret spending later. From my and other players' experience, the most notable recipes are:

• Stealth and Lore for early game/leveling
• Spirit and Insight stay relevant way longer for classes that benefit from them, like Necromancer, for instance
• Enigma is one of the most sought-after items due to its effect once you have the required Runes

Overall, we’re still quite early in the season, so the meta is still pretty fresh and barely formed, but as someone who practically lives in this game, I’m fairly certain that this is how it’ll look until the season’s end. Now let me explain the usefulness of these items.

Lore	Cheap Helm and a pretty easy early power spike, especially for Spiritborns
Spirit	+5 All Skills, Attack Speed, damage, Maximum Resource
Insight	Generally strong weapon stats and is extremely useful for resource-hungry builds
Enigma	Turns Evade into Teleport and gives +2 All Skills, Movement Speed, Maximum Life, and DR. An absolute must-have for builds that rely on their speed, such as Rogue’s Dance of Knives build, Whirlwind Barb, or Spiritborn’s Eagle builds.
Call to Arms	Insane for Barbarian builds that regularly use Shouts
Infinity	Hard to craft, but its Unique affix that makes close enemies Vulnerable and the damage it grants makes it an obvious endgame target

Stealth

Stealth is the first Runeword I make on a fresh character because Tal + Eth is dirt cheap compared to the endgame recipes. It gives Movement Speed, Attack Speed, Resource Generation, Life, and Damage Reduction, which is pretty much everything you want while leveling. It can carry you until around Act 3 before you replace it with something more build-specific. If you follow the news about Diablo 4, you probably heard about an early Season 15 bug where transfiguring three Ancestral Stealths could produce a Stealth carrying Enigma’s power, but it was fixed on September 17.

Spirit

Spirit is a great Unique to craft once you have Runes piling up. It currently gives +5 to All Skills, Attack Speed, a 50% multiplicative damage bonus, Maximum Resource, and Impairment Reduction, and it can be built on several one-handed weapons and off-hands. That flexibility makes it a lot easier to fit Spirit into a build than some of the more restrictive Runewords.

Enigma

Enigma is a truly iconic Unique. The one anybody who played a decent amount of Diablo II immediately recognizes. Its Unique affix turns Evade into Sorcerer’s Teleport for 33 Primary Resource, and the chest itself also gives you +2 to All Skills, +45% Movement Speed, Maximum Life, Armor, and Damage Reduction. Jah + Ith + Ber aren’t easy to find, but if mobility is what you need for your build, this is one of the best items you can get.

Insight

Insight is less flashy than Enigma, but players who use resource-heavy builds will definitely love it. You get Attack Speed, Critical Strike Chance, Weapon Damage, All Stats, and a huge Critical Strike Damage multiplier. Barbarian players in particular have been talking it up as a very strong option, although what counts as “best” obviously depends on which weapon slot and Unique power your build is giving up.

How to Get the New Unique Runes

Season 15 added 12 new Runes total, alongside these recipes. Some recipes also reuse older Runes such as Jah, Vex, Ohm, and Thul, so not every ingredient in the table above is one of the 12 new additions.

You can find these Runes while playing Season 15, and the Countess in the Forgotten Tower, Hawezar, is currently one of the best farming spots players are using for the legacy Rune pool. You can also turn duplicate Runes into higher ones through hidden Cube recipes, which is extremely useful when the Rune you need refuses to drop.

Diablo 4 Legacy Rune Upgrade Recipes

This part is easy to miss and probably deserves just as much attention as the Runewords themselves. Season 15 has a hidden upgrade path that lets you feed duplicate Runes and, later on, Gems into the Horadric Cube to get some harder-to-find ingredients. You can kind of call these upgrade paths ladders. There are actually two ladders, with Tir eventually reaching Sol and then Mal starting the second chain toward Jah. You cannot currently go directly from Sol into Mal through one of these fixed recipes. Below you’ll find the transformation recipes for Legacy Runewords in Diablo 4:

Don’t cube every duplicate the second you get one, though. A cheap Rune like Tal or Eth might be worth keeping if you plan on making several Stealths on better bases. Using two Ber Runewords to make Jah is a much more difficult decision. Figure out which Runeword you’re chasing before mindlessly turning your entire stash into one Rune.
