What are Hero Classes in Fortnite Save The World?
I don’t think many Fortnite players know that, it was Save the World that was supposed to be the game’s main game mode with Battle Royale as an optional, additional option. Although the almost instant success of BR made the developers abandon STW, it was put on live support until recently. The relaunch of this game mode is great news, which means that the developers are not abandoning their original idea and are willing to put in some time to update and add to it.
Save the World has always been a little bit more complex than Battle Royale. One of the aspects is the hero classes. As you may know, you can unlock multiple playable characters, each of which belongs to one of four hero classes:
- Soldier - focuses on combat and ranged weapons
- Ninja - focuses on combat and melee weapons
- Constructor - focuses on building and crowd control
- Outlander - focuses on exploration and resource gathering
All heroes of the same class share the same pool of 5 abilities, but each individual hero within the class comes with a unique Perk. I’m not going to go into details about the other systems, such as weapons crafting through the Armory’s schematics, but what I will say is that each hero can be upgraded. Evolution, as the game calls it, unlocks additional abilities for the hero. Just like fortnite skins, Heroes in STW come in 5 rarities, and the amount of level-ups you can do depends on that rarity:
- Uncommon - up to 3 upgrades
- Rare - up to 4 upgrades
- Epic - up to 5 upgrades
- Legendary - up to 5 upgrades
- Mythic - up to 5 upgrades
Note: as of v40.00 (March 2026), Hero XP and Survivor XP are unified into People XP, so leveling up heroes now works slightly differently than before.
While, ideally, you want to play in a team of 4 players where each one plays one of those classes so you can enjoy the benefits of all abilities in the game, I believe some classes are better than others. So, next up, I will break down each hero class, starting with the best one, going down to the least useful in my opinion.
Best Hero Class in Fortnite Save the World - Constructor

The main goal of any mission in Fortnite STW is to protect the base and not let the husks reach the core. Constructor is the only class that specializes in defending. And even if you don’t like to play defensively, this class has abilities that can let you go on the offensive and enjoy bonking husks on the head with the rest of the cast. Here are the Constructor’s abilities:
|
Name |
Description |
|
Bull Rush |
The Constructor charges forward 3 tiles, collecting enemies on a shield, knocking them back at the end of the rush or when colliding with a wall. Does a base of 60 physical damage. |
|
D.E.C.O.Y. |
Deploys a DECOY, which will distract all enemies within a 1.5 tile radius for 12 seconds. |
|
Goin' Constructor |
The Constructor equips a hammer that deals a base of 60 physical damage per hit and a shield that will distract all enemies within a 1.5 tile radius and reduces -5% damage from the front. |
|
Plasma Pulse |
Deploys a device that emits exploding Plasma Pulses every 0.125 seconds for 10 seconds. Deals a base of 14 energy damage. |
|
R.O.S.I.E. |
Deploy a mountable turret that emits a shield bubble. R.O.S.I.E. has 150 ammo, deals a base of 14 physical damage per shot, and fires 7 rounds per second. |
Their perks, however, are what make them so good at defending and fortifying the base. Constructors are also very tanky and have the highest base HP and shield, so they can safely use their melee weapons to crowd control. Their perks include:
|
Name |
Description |
|
Kinetic Overload |
Melee knockbacks and staggers trigger Kinetic Overload, dealing 25 base Energy Damage to nearby enemies. After melee critical hits, increases Melee Impact Damage by 10% for 5 seconds, up to 5 stacks. |
|
B.A.S.E. |
Place B.A.S.E. to reinforce attached structures with 60 Armor. Extends 4 segments from placement. Placed from the trap wheel. |
I would say that B.A.S.E. Kyle, who is part of the default roster of heroes, is the best Constructor. His Lofty Architecture perk is the one you need to increase the structure's health points even more, which is always handy.
2nd Best Hero Class - Outlander

All missions in Save the World are divided into stages, and the first stage is for gathering resources. You’ll need a lot of resources to build as many defenses and traps as you need to make the final stand easier, and no one farms resources faster than the Outlander, which is why I give this hero class second place.
This class isn’t made for direct combat; they have less health and shield than most other classes, but their specialty lies in mobility, crown control, and resource gathering. Just take a look at their abilities:
|
Name |
Description |
|
Seismic Smash |
Smash the ground, creating a fissure of energy which deals 114 energy damage to enemies. |
|
Phase Shift |
Rapidly shifts 1.562 tiles in the direction currently moving. |
|
Shock Tower |
Consumes a Charge Fragment to place a Shock Tower that pulses every 0.5 seconds and lasts for 6 seconds. Causes Chain lightning, doing a base of 18 energy damage to enemies within 1.367 tiles, stunning small enemies for 1 second. Can stun large enemies after multiple hits. |
|
T.E.D.D.Y. |
Consumes a Charge Fragment to deploy T.E.D.D.Y. for 15 seconds. T.E.D.D.Y. will blast enemies within 4 tiles for a base of 10 physical damage, 4 times per second. |
As you can see, as an Outlander, you can put down a few placable objects that will help you deal with or, at the very least, slow down a horde of husks. Both T.E.D.D.Y. and the Shock Tower are very good at just that. But where Outlanders really shine is resource gathering, thanks to their perks:
|
Name |
Description |
|
Anti-Material Charge |
Punch forward, destroying structures and harvesting their materials. Deals X Damage to enemies. Activate Heavy Attack with your pickaxe equipped. |
|
In the Zone |
After 5 hits in a row with a pickaxe, gain In the Zone, which increases pickaxe damage by 24%. |
|
Loot Llama |
Consumes a Llama Fragment to deploy a Loot Llama. Whack the Loot Llama with a harvesting tool to get building materials and crafting ingredients before it disappears. |
I believe no further explanation is needed. All 3 perks are about resource gathering. The best one is the Anti-Material Charge that lets you basically destroy a structure with one hit and get all of the resources at once. This is invaluable for building things. Outlanders are a must-have in every mission, especially in the later zones.
I would say that Archaeolo-Jess is the best Outlander hero in Fortnite Save the World. Unfortunately, you can only purchase this hero by spending 2.8k gold, but her Strike Cost perk that increases the Anti-Material Charge efficiency is worth it.

3rd Place - Ninja

I decided to reserve the last two places for the classes that specialize in destroying husks. Both are extremely valuable because they’ll be the last line of defense once the zombies get past all the defenses, which they will eventually. So, in no way are the 3rd and 4th places bad or useless.
Let me start by saying that Ninjas are a bit riskier to play, because unlike Soldiers, they specialize in close combat and melee weapons. Naturally, their weapon of choice is a long sword, and they have an increased movement speed compared to other classes. That, coupled with some of the movement-based attacks, makes them very mobile. Let’s take a look at their abilities first:
|
Name |
Description |
|
Crescent Kick |
A quick kick that does a base of 54 damage, 800.0 impact, and stuns for 3 seconds. |
|
Dragon Slash |
Ninja springs forward 2 tiles, dealing a base of 95 edged weapon damage to all enemies within 0.5 tiles. |
|
Smoke Bomb |
The Ninja throws down a smoke bomb, creating a cloud that persists for 5 seconds. The cloud slows all enemies inside by 30%, dealing a base of 40 damage every second. |
|
Throwing Stars |
The Ninja hurls throwing stars in a straight line. Throws 1 star three times in quick succession, dealing a base of 35 edged weapon damage with each star. |
|
Kunai Storm |
Vault into the air and hurl a barrage of Kunai at your enemies. Each Kunai deals 184 damage. |
The Crescent Kick and the Dragon Slash provide that much-needed mobility, while Throwing Stars, Kunai Storm, and Smoke Bomb give you some ranged attacks for variety. Besides Ninjas can double-jump and don’t take fall damage.
If you remember, at the start of the article, I said that each hero comes with its own personalized perk, but I’m not going to dump the entire list on you here. Here’s just a taste of what kind of perks Ninjas have:
|
Name |
Description |
|
7 Points |
The Ninja throws two additional throwing stars. Throw pattern: 1/3/3. |
|
Anatomy Lessons |
Increases Critical Rating of Swords, Scythes, and Axes by 45. |
|
Assassination |
Dealing Melee Weapon Damage grants 1 stack of Assassination (up to 5 stacks). Assassination lasts 5 seconds and increases Melee Weapon Damage by 4.5%. |
|
Breath of the Dragon |
Dragon Slash has doubled its area of effect. Additionally, it increases the damage of Dragon Slash by 50%. |
|
Cascade |
The Ninja throws one additional throwing star on the third toss. Throw pattern: 1/1/2. |
|
Corrosive Blade |
Critical hits from the Ninja's edged weapons deal 30% of hit damage over time while reducing the target's movement speed by 30%. |
You can definitely find a hero and combine the perks with abilities to get the kind of Ninja that you enjoy playing. But make sure that you don’t rush into the enemy horde recklessly so that the other players don’t have to stop defending to save you.
I would say that the best Ninja hero is Dragon Scorch with the Wings of the Dragon perk that gives you that increased slash range and damage.
4th Place - Soldier

I am of the opinion that Soldier is the best beginner class in Fortnite Save the World. It feels the most familiar if you like classic run-and-gun gameplay. This is a well-rounded, jack-of-all-trades class that specializes in ranged combat. And if you know how many different guns are in the game, it may also be the most diverse class as well. Its abilities are also very cool:
|
Name |
Description |
|
Frag Grenade |
The Soldier throws a frag grenade, detonating after a few seconds, dealing a base of 101 energy damage in a 0.5 tile radius. |
|
Goin' Commando!!! |
Fires 18 times per second, dealing a base of 25 physical damage per shot, for 10 seconds. |
|
Lefty and Righty |
Equips two pistols that fire 6 times per second, dealing 57 base physical damage per shot, for 10 seconds. |
|
Shockwave |
The Soldier emits a shockwave, knocking back enemies within 1 tile range and dealing a base of 75 energy damage. |
|
War Cry |
Give a War Cry, affecting friendly characters within 4 tiles for 10 seconds. Grants 40% more damage and 40% attack speed for ranged weapons and 40% more damage and 16% attack speed for melee weapons. |
Basically, you get things like the frag grenades, which are always useful, but the ability to pull out a minigun? Come on, tell me that’s not the best ability in the game! Although I have to admit that towards the endgame, the most damage will come from your weapons rather than class abilities.
The AoE Shockwave and War Cry buff abilities are there so you can make the kind of soldier you want - the buffer, the damage dealer, the choice is yours. Some of the perks Soldiers have buff those abilities and weapon handling:
|
Name |
Description |
|
'Command Presence |
War Cry snares enemies within its range by 30% for its duration. Additionally, affected enemies take 25% increased weapon damage. |
|
'Pump Metal |
Lefty and Righty eliminations extend their duration by 2 seconds, up to a maximum of 10 eliminations. |
|
'Quick Fingers |
Whenever you use any ability, Quick Fingers reloads your equipped weapon (if it can be reloaded). When you reload a weapon this way, you have a % chance to summon a phantasm based on how empty the clip was, with a cap of 80%. |
|
'Force of Nature |
An additional Shockwave activates from your tamed pet when used. Your pet enters Frenzy for 1.5 seconds for each enemy damaged by its Shockwave, causing it to move and attack 50% faster. |
|
'Prickly |
Enemies that land melee attacks take 24 Base Damage plus an additional 13 Base Damage per second for 3 Seconds. |
|
'Goin' Again |
Decreases Goin' Commando!!! Cooldown by 30%. |
Helping the teammates deal with the husks, protecting the base, and the traps from being destroyed is the kind of job that’s perfect for new players who are learning the game and how it works.
Want to know which hero is the best Soldier? Try getting Rescue Trooper Ramirez, because she has that increased weapon damage, which is useful in every mission, even in later zones.
