WoW Forever Professions Tier List

I have to say - seeing this many new recipes across all professions is impressive. It’s been getting pretty stale crafting the same things and even seeing the same prices time and time again. Blizzard has confirmed more than 600 new recipes. Existing recipes are also being updated across every skill range. So, it’s not like you will only get to the new stuff at max level. The devs made sure to spread them out across all character and profession levels so we’ll always have something new to try out. Don’t forget that the Legacy system has perks that help with crafting too. Furthermore, the Camping system also utilizes professions in its own way.

Blizzard has also shown hundreds of actual crafting recipes. These include new armor sets, gadgets, consumables, enchants, and weapons. Find out what else is new in the game from my WoW Forever Overview!

I’ve looked through all of them and ranked professions based on how busted those new recipes are.

Tier

Professions

S-tier

Engineering, Alchemy, Enchanting

A-tier

Leatherworking, Blacksmithing, Tailoring, Mining, Herbalism

B-tier

Skinning

Secondary Professions

Cooking, First Aid, Fishing

This ranking is based on several factors. Personal character power, leveling value and goldmaking potential are the main criteria. Recipe variety is another major factor. Profession-exclusive tools get extra value. Tradeable gear is ranked slightly lower. That distinction matters much more in WoW Forever.

At the same time, I wouldn’t treat this tier list as anything more than an “educated guess”. It’s been made prior to access to the beta and should serve as only a suggestion for which professions to start with.

Why Professions Matter More in WoW Forever

Blizzard wants professions to become part of character progression again. More than 600 new recipes are being added. They appear across every profession and skill range. Many existing recipes are being reworked too. That means professions should matter before level 60. Characters can find meaningful crafts while leveling.

Camping Gives Every Profession More Utility

Camping also connects directly with professions. The Basic Campfire supports up to three crafted campsite objects. Each player can contribute one object. Different trade skills provide different campsite bonuses. The devs demonstrated several examples:

  • Blacksmithing creates a Sharpening Wheel for Strength.
  • Tailoring creates a Faction Banner for Spirit.
  • Herbalism creates an Incense Candle for Intellect.

These effects do not freely stack with equivalent class buffs. The Intellect effect competes with Arcane Intellect, for example. The first profession campsite objects appear around 20 skill. Better versions can come from Blueprint recipes.

Camping therefore gives professions value outside traditional crafting.

S-Tier WoW Forever Professions

Engineering

Engineering currently looks like the best overall starting profession of choice. The showcased recipes offer something other professions cannot easily match. Engineering provides direct mobility, utility, stealth, and unusual active effects. More importantly, several gadgets require Engineering to actually use. That gives Engineering genuine character-exclusive value. Here are some nice examples:

Recipe

Main Effect

Key Details

Floppy Goggles

Lets the wearer look far into the distance

Level 40; requires Engineering 200; BoE Cloth headpiece

Tinkerbox: Teleport

Teleports the player forward 20 yards

Level 45; 3-minute cooldown; requires Engineering 260

Tinkerbox: Nitro Boosts

Increases movement speed by up to 160% for up to 8 seconds

Level 45; 3-minute cooldown; requires Engineering 260

SAF-T Disposable Parachute

Reduces fall speed for 10 seconds

Back item; 1 charge; 30-minute cooldown; requires Engineering 250

Stealthman 52

Grants stealth for up to 1 minute while stationary

Level 55; stealth lasts up to 6 seconds after moving; 5-minute cooldown; cannot be used in combat; requires Engineering 250

Emergency Field Cloak

Grants invisibility for 10 seconds

Trinket; 1 charge; 1-hour cooldown; requires Engineering 225

Ultrasafe Rechargeable Battery

Restores 3 charges to a SAF-T or EZ-Thro device

Unique (5); 1-minute cooldown; requires Engineering 300

Gnomish Poultryizer

Turns the target into a chicken until cancelled

5-minute cooldown; transformation can apparently backfire; requires Engineering 300

I would definitely recommend engineering to any class regardless of role or combat style. Literally everyone can benefit from these utility gadgets.

Alchemy

Alchemy also looks to be pretty good of a choice for starters. WoW Forever expands Alchemy beyond just simple healing and stat consumables. Several showcased potions have active combat effects. This gives Alchemy more value than usual. I bet it will come in handy even more on Hardcore servers. Here are some datamined examples:

Recipe

Main Effect

Key Details

Caustic Smog Potion

Creates a damaging Nature cloud

Lasts 12 seconds; enemies inside take 285–315 Nature damage each second; requires Level 45

Disorienting Smog Potion

Reduces enemy hit chance inside an area

Cloud lasts 8 seconds; enemies inside suffer 15% reduced hit chance

Dragonfire-style Potion

Deals heavy Fire damage in a frontal cone

Deals 450 Fire damage immediately, then 125 every 2 seconds for 8 seconds; requires Level 35

Venomous Blood Potion

Punishes enemies when the user suffers Bleed damage

Grants 10 doses; a dose spreads to a nearby enemy after Bleed damage and deals 325 Nature damage

High-Level Combat Potions

Temporarily increases major combat stats

Revealed Level 55 versions grant +40 Attack Power, +75 Healing, or +40 Spell Damage for 30 seconds

Elemental Spell Potion

Greatly increases damage against Elementals

Grants +265 Spell Damage against Elementals for 2 minutes

Defensive Elixir

Increases survivability for 30 minutes

Revealed version grants +400 maximum Health and +500 Armor

Mana Regeneration Elixir

Restores Mana over time

Lesser version restores 6 Mana every 5 seconds from Level 25

I’d say it’s S-tier because everyone will always need consumables regardless on what level content we’re talking about. There will always be high demand for healing potions, all sorts of buffs, and whatnot. The goldmaking potential is enormous. But even if you’re not looking to make gold with Alchemy, being able to whip up a potion or two for your own character will save you tons of money.

Enchanting

Enchanting is now more than just about making, well… enchantments. It can now also make class relics. Their effects can directly alter class gameplay. Examples shown include mana restoration and mana regeneration. Others improve Holy Shock or reduce ability costs. Some provide cooldown reductions or offensive bonuses. These items give Enchanting another market beyond normal enchants.

Enchanting can also create:

  • Wands
  • Staves
  • Off-hands

Some showcased high-level staves appear to be Bind on Pickup. That could be extremely important. A strong BoP Enchanting item creates genuine profession-exclusive power.

Besides that, there are new enchants to craft too:

  • Spell Power
  • Defense
  • Intellect
  • Strength
  • School-specific spell damage
  • New weapon procs
  • Defensive absorption effects
  • Healing effects
  • Critical-strike-related effects

Some enchantments provide unusual conditional bonuses. That makes Enchanting more than a passive stat service.

Forceful Thick Armor Kit

Permanent armor enhancement

Adds +8 Attack Power and +32 Armor to Chest, Legs, Hands, or Feet; usable on Level 25+ items

The only thing I personally get from it is the greatly increased variety. There’s now like an insane amount of gear that you can make. I’m not sure they’ll all be extremely viable, but they might!

Besides, leatherworking also receives improved armor kits.

One demonstrated example is the Forceful Thick Armor Kit.

It permanently adds:

  • 8 Attack Power
  • 32 Armor

It works on Chest, Legs, Hands, or Feet. The target item must require at least level 25.

Blacksmithing

Blacksmithing has changed a lot too. We’ve seen more than 60 examples. WoW Forever Blacksmithing now allows you to make more than just Plate armor. New Blacksmithing Armor Families include:

  • Acolyte
  • Crusader
  • Enriched Thorium
  • Guard
  • Justicar
  • Officer
  • Prefect
  • Protector
  • Sentinel
  • Veteran
  • Warder

These sets cover many different roles. Check out these recipes:

Recipe

Main Purpose

Key Details

Acolyte's Silvered Chain Shirt

Healer Mail

+7 Intellect, +6 Stamina; +22 Healing and +7 Spell Damage; Level 22

Crusader's Silvered Chain Shirt

Hybrid Mail

+6 Strength, +7 Stamina; +12 Spell Damage and Healing; Level 22

Sentinel's Gauntlet

Tank Mail

+9 Strength, +10 Stamina; +7 Defense; Level 35

Prefect's Gauntlet

Healer Mail

+7 Intellect, +9 Stamina; +21 Healing and +7 Spell Damage; Level 35

Enriched Thorium Breastplate

Tank/caster Plate

+25 Stamina, +9 Defense; +14 Spell Damage and Healing; Level 57

Officer's Gauntlet

Physical DPS Mail

+10 Strength, +7 Agility, +9 Stamina; Level 35

Legionite Glaive

High-level physical DPS weapon

Two-Hand Polearm; +16 Agility, +1% Hit, +54 Attack Power; Level 58

Thorium Greatmace

Hybrid two-handed weapon

+21 Strength; +23 Spell Damage and Healing; Level 50

Thorium Cestus

One-handed physical DPS weapon

+9 Stamina, +16 Attack Power; Level 50

I bet players will spend hours testing out different sets and gear combos, which means those who make these will be swimming in gold.

There’re also a few new high-level weapons that blacksmiths can make. For example, the Legionite Glaive. It requires level 58 and provides:

  • 16 Agility
  • 1% Hit
  • 54 Attack Power

All this makes blacksmithing a pretty good profession, but only to those classes that can actually benefit from its products.

Tailoring

Tailoring may become one of Forever's best leveling professions. This is because a lot of new recipes are actually for low-level gear, meaning there’s now a real reason to learn and start using tailoring to make gear for low-level characters. You might not make much gold from it, since I doubt low-level players will have any spare gold to buy crafted gear, but if your character uses cloth armor, this might be useful.

Also, tailoring has dedicated gear for several damage schools. You can now make gear with the name that starts with:

  • Fire
  • Frost
  • Shadow
  • Arcane
  • Holy
  • Healing

So you know it’ll have dedicated bonuses or resistance stats for these elements. This is very different from normal Classic leveling gear.

On top of that, tailoring also creates new Reagent Bags. The demonstrated bags include:

  • Mageweave Reagent Bag: 12 slots
  • Runecloth Reagent Bag: 14 slots

So, not to repeat myself, but you can now make a lot more useful stuff with this profession, which seems to be the case for all existing professions.

Mining

Mining is a lot more useful as a gathering profession since those professions that use it now have way more recipes. Specifically, Engineering and Blacksmithing require large amounts of metal. There also appear to be new materials that you can gather with mining. Among those are:

  • Azerothium Bar
  • Legionite Bar
  • Torbernite

There’s also a Mining buff from the Legacy system. Bountiful Harvest increases scarce material yields. That could make Mining extremely profitable during launch.

By the way, check out our full WoW Forever Legacy system guide for more details on how the bonuses work.

Herbalism

Herbalism should remain one of the best gathering professions as well. Alchemy has dozens of new consumables. That alone creates constant material demand. Other crafting professions also use botanical reagents. Death Lotus appears in demonstrated Blacksmithing recipes, for example.

Herbalism also benefits from Bountiful Harvest. Its campsite object provides an Intellect-style buff too. Herbalism therefore has unusually broad value for a gathering profession.

B-Tier WoW Forever Professions

Skinning

Skinning should still be useful. Leatherworking now has a massive recipe library. That naturally creates higher demand for hides and leather. Bountiful Harvest can also increase scarce Skinning materials. The problem is opportunity cost. Mining supports both Engineering and Blacksmithing.

Skinning currently appears more concentrated around Leatherworking. That places it slightly below the other gatherers. This could change once more recipes become available.

Best Secondary Professions in WoW Forever

Secondary professions deserve much more attention in WoW Forever. Cooking and First Aid have particularly significant changes.

Cooking

Cooking looks almost mandatory while leveling. Blizzard confirmed that almost every crafted food provides stats. These foods also provide a small experience bonus. The demonstrated tooltip showed 5% increased experience from kills.

It does not mean all leveling becomes 5% faster. Quest experience is not increased by that tooltip. Even so, constant bonus kill experience adds up. Cooking also requires no primary profession slot.

So, I suspect everyone will be using Cooking way more often. Either that or there will be higher demand for food consumables because there’s like a hundred new foods with all sorts of useful buffs and bonuses.

First Aid

First Aid looks far more useful than Classic First Aid. New curatives target specific debuffs. Demonstrated examples can remove:

  • Bleeds
  • Diseases
  • Poisons

First Aid also appears connected with healing consumables. Its Camping contribution can provide a Stamina-style bonus. The relationship with Alchemy still needs clarification. Healing potion overlap could affect both professions. Regardless, First Aid looks worth leveling on most characters.

Fishing

Fishing has fewer demonstrated changes so far. But the Legacy system has at least one perk for it: Luremaster can provide an additional fish while using lures. That should improve gathering efficiency.
