Legacy System Guide for WoW Forever

Legacy is WoW Forever’s new account-wide progression system for all kinds of things. It’s kind of an achievement system that gives your character various perks. You earn Legacy Points for your account, then spend them differently on each character for leveling, profession, or convenience perks.

WoW Forever Legacy System Quick Summary:

  • Legacy is WoW Forever’s account-wide progression system, built around completing challenges across different parts of the game
  • Legacy Points are unlocked for the whole account, but every character can spend those points independently
  • Three Legacy Trees let characters specialize around leveling, professions, or broader quality-of-life bonuses
  • Challenges cover classes, professions, PvP, adventure, dungeons, and raids, encouraging players to engage with more than just endgame content
  • Points beyond the per-character spending limit still matter because they advance the Legacy Reward Track and unlock additional rewards

While the Legacy System serves as a fun ride for your character to go through while you’re leveling from 1-60, it’s not mandatory. If you want to skip the leveling altogether and get some Legacy Points along the way, check out our WoW Forever Powerleveling boost.

How the WoW Forever Legacy System Works

Legacy is basically an account progression in WoW Forever for people who actually play more than one character. Or should I say, it incentivizes playing more than one character now. In order to get the points, you complete Legacy Challenges and unlock those points for your entire account. Your characters can then spend them independently in the Legacy Trees. The best thing about Legacy Points is that all your characters get to spend the 16 points available in beta independently. That means if your Warrior spends these points, it doesn’t mean that your Mage will be left without them. Here’s a breakdown of the Legacy system:

Details

Current Number

Legacy Points initially earnable

65

Legacy Points spendable per character

16

Legacy Trees

3

Known challenge categories

6

The 16-point cap is one of the most crucial parts of this system. You won’t unlock every gameplay perk on one character, and that’s on purpose. You need to pick and choose what your characters will do. Considering that now you can always be at max level, this isn’t that big of a deal, but you have to be ready to split the responsibilities between your characters.

How to Earn Legacy Points

Legacy Points come from Legacy Challenges, which are just glorified achievements spread across WoW Forever content. Do note that not every individual challenge necessarily awards a Legacy Point, though. The BlizzCon demo suggested that points are mainly attached to larger milestone or meta-style challenges. There are currently six categories:

  • Classes
  • Tradeskills
  • PvP
  • Adventure
  • Dungeons
  • Raids

The thought behind this is pretty obvious: instead of making everyone farm a specific endgame activity, Legacy rewards you for playing different parts of Forever’s 1-60 journey. It’s specifically described as a system supporting leveling and alt play. This is great, cause one thing that WoW traditionally suffered from was a lack of things to do until endgame, and with the Legacy system, the developers address this issue. Does it solve the issue completely? I wouldn’t say so, but at least now you can enjoy the game as you progress, not when you finally reach the end of the expansion’s storyline.

WoW Forever Legacy Trees

In this section, I’ll briefly describe each of the three trees that you can put your points into. Note that not every perk in the tree is known so far, but the community already has a general idea of what’s there. Here are the trees that will be available at launch:

Legacy Tree

Area it Targets

Adventure

Leveling, Rested XP, exploration, open-world bonuses

Professions

Crafting, gathering, fishing, Cooking, profession skill

Resourcefulness

Reagents, durability, Reputation, Honor, buffs, convenience

You can mix points between the trees rather than locking yourself into one of them. Some perks also have prerequisites, so you won’t be able to invest your points into anything you want immediately. For instance, the Dedicated Study perk in the Professions tree requires you to first spend 10 Legacy points in this tree before you can unlock it. Let’s take a closer look at these trees.

Adventure Legacy Tree

Adventure tree is perfect for leveling your character. It focuses on making your XP gains better and making your traversal easier. Known perks include:

  • Well Rested: Improves how fast your Rested XP grows and its cap
  • Talented: Lets you begin earning talent points at Level 9 instead of Level 10, though you’re still capped at 51 talent points
  • High Alert: Improves Stealth detection by 1 outside Battlegrounds
  • Thrill of Adventure: Restores Health and Mana after killing non-trivial enemies outside instances
  • Field Guide: Reduces cd on adding Camp features by 8%
  • Frequent Flier: Get a 50% discount on all flight paths, and your flight path mount flies 20% faster

There are two more locked skills in that tree that haven’t been revealed yet, but I’m pretty sure they’ll continue with the theme of being QoL perks.

Professions Legacy Tree

It’s in the name. It’s a gathering and crafting tree for your alts. I don’t advise you to invest in it for your first character in Forever. Known perks are:

  • Working Overtime: Increases the chance to gain a skill when using tradeskills
  • Bountiful Harvest: Gather 20% more Scarce mats
  • Bartering: Reduces the price from all vendors
  • Performance Bonus: Gives a 5% chance to gain 100% increased Merchant’s Favor
  • Master Chef: A 10% chance to get an extra dish when cooking
  • Dedicated Study: Increases your lowest tradeskill by 1. If all tradeskills are at 300, grants 2 to 4 Elemental Essences
  • Luremaster: A 25% increased chance of catching extra fish when using Lure

If you have a character whose entire reason for existing is Mining, Herbalism, or crafting, don’t think twice before dumping all your 16 points here.

Resourcefulness Legacy Tree

Possibly the best tree for quality-of-life improvements. Resourcefulness removes a lot of old Classic annoyances. Known perks include:

  • Gourmand: Duration of food effects increases by 33%
  • The Quick and the Dead: Greatest skill in this tree, in my opinion. Increases movement speed while dead by 5% per point invested, and your helpful spells and abilities cost no resources for 1 minute after being resurrected or until entering combat.
  • Reinforce: You take 8% less durability loss when you die
  • For Great Honor: Gain 2% more Honor Points
  • Permanence: Class abilities with long duration stat or attribute bonus last 50% longer. Resting at camp effects also last 50% longer.
  • Diplomat: Reputation gains increase by 2%
  • Reagent Economy: Class abilities require no reagents that can be purchased from vendors. Your Tier 1 camping features cost no reagents to craft.

This is the tree you want on your main. Reagent Economy in particular looks nice if you aren’t keen on keeping bags full of spell components.

Best Legacy Perks

First and foremost, this is not a tier list or an objective list of the best perks. This is an observation made by a veteran player.

  1. Leveling: Well Rested is the best. Less time on the grind is always good. It grants a 4% Rested XP increase and a cap, which means you get a 20% bonus at level 5 of this skill. Not bad.
  2. Professions: Bountiful Harvest gives a 100% increase in ingredients gained at level 5
  3. Main Character: All of them. I will invest 1 point in Gourmand, 1 point in The Quick and the Dead, 5 points in For Great Honor (planning a PvP character), 5 points in Diplomat, and 1 in Reagent Economy. If you’re planning a Raiding character, consider investing 3 points in Gourmand, 2 in Permanence, and 2 in The Quick and the Dead.

I think the beauty of this Legacy Points system is that there’s no one answer for “best” build, as it’s mostly quality-of-life fixes. If you’re not annoyed by spending gold on repairing your armor, then don’t put your points there, even if the build you’re using from Wowhead recommends it.

Legacy Reward Track

What’s interesting is that you can earn far beyond 16 Legacy Points. You can only spend 16 points on your character, but you can gain up to 65. To make them useful, devs came up with a Reward Track. It’s a prestige system that lets you get rewards based on the amount of Legacy Points you have. So far, there were only 4 rewards shown at The BlizzCon:

Legacy Points

Rewards

15

Replica Ironforge Air Rifle

25

Spectral Bear Cub

40

Spectral Bear Tabard

55

Reins of the Spectral Bear

That’s a good way to not feel that your extra points are wasted, and from what I understand, each phase will bring new rewards that will look especially good with new graphics of WoW Forever. Legacy and Hardcore

If you are a Hardcore player, know that Hardcore uses separate Legacy rules. Progress earned on normal Forever characters does not transfer to Hardcore. It prevents a player from maxing the Legacy system and then starting Hardcore with a bunch of account bonuses. Legacy progression earned in Hardcore can, however, flow back to your normal Forever account, so it’s a one-way road.

F.A.Q

Are WoW Forever Legacy Points account-wide?

Yes. You unlock Legacy Points across your account, but every character spends those unlocked points independently. One character’s build doesn’t consume points for another.

How many Legacy Points can you spend in WoW Forever?

At launch, each character can spend up to 16 Legacy Points, while your account can initially earn as many as 65.

Can you respec Legacy Points in WoW Forever?

Blizzard hasn’t confirmed the final respec rules yet. We still don’t know whether respeccing will be free, cost something, or support saved builds.

Will the Legacy system expand later in WoW Forever upcoming updates?

Yes. Blizzard has positioned Legacy as part of WoW Forever’s long-term progression, and current coverage says the system is expected to gain more challenges, perks, and additional ways to spend points after launch. WoW Forever itself launches November 4, with Beta starting September 17.
