WoW Forever Shaman Changes

Though Forever changed lots of stuff, including the talents and balancing, Shaman still feels like Shaman. Lots of the annoying parts of its Classic gameplay have been removed. Totem management is much easier, and each tree gets new abilities without becoming a Retail class that can do it all, even though it shouldn’t. Enhancement changed the most, while Elemental and Restoration mostly receive missing pieces of a puzzle that make their gameplay more interesting and, should I say, complete. The biggest WoW Forever Shaman changes include:
- Dwarf Shaman: Alliance can finally play the class
- Windshaper Skyborne Shaman: Another Horde race option
- Two-handed Enhancement: Dual Wield isn’t part of Forever’s design ideology
- Maelstrom Weapon: Melee attacks can turn into faster Lightning Bolts
- Rage of the Farseer: A major Enhancement speed cooldown
- Lava Burst: A new damage spell for Elemental Shaman
- Lightning Overload: Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning can trigger bonus casts
- Riptide: Instant Restoration heal with a HoT
- Water Shield: Extra Mana sustain for Restoration
- Fire Nova: Now works around your active Fire Totem
- Totemic Projection: Lets you reposition active Totems
- Saved Totem Sets: Several Call abilities let you prepare Totem combinations
- Totemic Recall: Removes active Totems and refunds part of their Mana cost
The Totem improvements are hands down my favorite part. Playing Shaman in Classic felt like busywork, which worked for some, but I just don’t want to constantly maintain them, give me some space to do something else, please. With Forever’s version of Shaman, you still have to think about which Totems your group needs, but the game cuts down on constantly replacing and reorganizing them.
Shaman Pros and Cons in WoW Forever
Shaman is one of the best classes in WoW Forever, with many answers to most problems you and your group can face. It can melee, cast, heal, interrupt, purge buffs, resurrect itself, not to mention their ludicrous Totem utility. That flexibility is also the main reason why this class has more buttons and things to keep track of than most others. Shaman used to be a very difficult class to learn as a new player, and I wouldn’t say that changed much in Forever. Quality of Life features make it less cumbersome, true, but you still juggle multiple things at a time. Mana management remains relevant across every spec as well.

Totem positioning is important |
The best part about Shaman is that your choice of role doesn’t remove the base Shaman toolkit. Enhancement will heal, Restoration will interrupt, and Elemental brings the same Totem utility.
How to Play Shaman in WoW Forever
Shaman uses one shared toolkit and changes it with three different roles through talents. Elemental focuses on ranged spell damage, Enhancement mixes melee attacks with casting, and Restoration is responsible for healing. All three keep Shocks, Totems, Purge, Ghost Wolf, and other class-staple utility.

How to Play Elemental Shaman
Elemental uses Lightning Bolt as a basic filler, Chain Lightning for multiple targets, and Flame Shock for additional damage. Forever adds new talents, Lava Burst and Lightning Overload, giving the spec more options than just throwing Lightning Bolts like you’re Thor. Mana is something you have to watch, though. Elemental Shaman burns through it extremely quickly if you throw spells at every enemy, especially while leveling.
How to Play Enhancement Shaman
Enhancement goes back to a two-handed weapon instead of DW and combines heavy melee swings with Shocks and Nature spells. Maelstrom Weapon lets melee attacks get cheaper (and faster) Lightning Bolts, while Stormstrike improves the Nature damage you deal after. Talents that unlock later in this talent tree, like Mental Quickness and Rage of the Farseer, push the hybrid playstyle even further. You’re not a pure melee with a few utility spells at this point, but you’re also not just standing around waiting for Windfury to proc. I have a soft spot for Melee Spellcaster classes in everything I play, so this is my choice for the first character in Forever, which means I’ll pursue the Adventure tree in a new Legacy System.
How to Play Restoration Shaman
Restoration uses Healing Wave for efficient healing, Lesser Healing Wave for quick damage mitigation, and Chain Heal for multiple hurt players. Forever adds Riptide, which gives you an instant heal with a HoT that also works with Chain Heal. One talent adds so much use to this spec. Restoration, much like other specs, is Mana-hungry. Water Shield and Mindfulness improve Mana sustain, which should make Restoration less punishing during long fights.
Best Shaman Race in WoW Forever (WIP)
Though Alliance players can now play Shaman with Dwarf race, Horde is gonna be the default option for Shaman, with the new Skyborne race being a major reason for that. I currently lean toward Orc for Enhancement spec. Troll and Windshaper Skyborne look interesting as caster specs. This section is a work in progress, so it will need another pass once racial performance can be properly tested at level 60.

Orc stands out because of Blood Fury. It supports both physical and spell damage, while Axe Specialization synergizes with Enhancement. Tauren has strong general utility, while Troll and Windshaper Skyborne are better for players who lean toward casting and buying a new race, wink wink.
Dwarf Shamans in WoW Forever
I know, I know, Skyborne is the talk of the town, but I think the fact that Alliance can now also play as Shamans is a big deal. Dwarf Shaman is one of the new race-class combinations in WoW Forever and currently their only option for the class. Shaman is still a majorly Horde class. Dwarf racials also work well with Shaman, particularly Enhancement.

Why It’s Useful for Shaman |
|
Defensive utility and harmful-effect removal |
|
|
Critical Strike while using a Mace |
|
|
Extra damage against Beasts |
|
|
General utility |
I mean, Stoneform is just generally good and is a big reason why Dwarves are so loved by players. Mace Specialization is especially useful because Forever unifies Critical Strike, allowing the bonus to benefit both physical attacks and spells.
Shaman Stat Priority in WoW Forever (WIP)
Forever unifies Hit and Critical Strike for physical and spell attacks, which already makes Shaman gearing way easier than it was in Classic. Enhancement also gets much more from Intellect through its talents. Restoration gets better use from Spirit. This section is done for the current level 20 cap. Exact priorities will need proper level 60 testing, and I’ll update this and all WIP parts of the article once the full game drops. For now, this is the Shaman stat priority in WoW Forever:
|
Spec |
Stat Priority |
|
Elemental |
Spell Power → Hit → Haste → Intellect → Crit |
|
Enhancement |
Weapon Damage → Hit → Strength → Intellect → Crit |
|
Restoration |
Healing Power → Intellect → Spirit → Crit |
For Enhancement, weapon quality is more important than minute stat differences. Elemental needs enough Hit before stacking damage. Finally, Restoration should balance raw healing with enough Mana sustain to actually be able to finish the fight.
Best Shaman Builds in WoW Forever (WIP)

Another WIP section that’s gonna be useful for beta. The talent trees are available, but I don’t want to call any level 60 build definitive before it can be tested. For now, the important thing is understanding what each spec usually builds around.
|
Build |
Core Talents |
Goal |
|
Elemental Lava Burst |
Elemental Fury, Lightning Overload, Lava Burst |
Ranged spell DPS |
|
Enhancement Maelstrom |
Stormstrike, Maelstrom Weapon, Mental Quickness, Rage of the Farseer |
Melee + instant spell weaving |
|
Restoration Riptide |
Water Shield, Mindfulness, Healing Way, Riptide |
Mana-efficient healing |
I’ll replace these with full talent distributions once the launch meta is established.
Shaman Leveling Guide in WoW Forever
For now, Enhancement is the best spec for leveling. It’s the easiest to learn the class with, plus it’s easier to understand how to control Mana consumption. You can heal yourself between fights by saving Mana cause fighting an enemy doesn’t require you to spend it, and Shocks or Totems can be used only when they actually save time. Elemental only truly blooms with better caster gear and later talents, while Restoration is mostly for players leveling through group content. Forever’s healers don’t do much DPS, unlike in Retail.

While leveling:
- Keep your weapon imbue and Lightning Shield active
- Upgrade your weapon aggressively as Enhancement
- Don’t ignore your Totem quests
- Use Earth Shock to interrupt dangerous casts
- Use Purge against enemy magic buffs
- Don’t use all of your Totems for one enemy, unless it’s a mini-boss or a boss fight
- Carry potions because Shaman will burn Mana quickly, especially when you’re still learning it
- Use Ghost Wolf for travel
Though I said that only about Elemental, Enhancement also improves substantially as you level. Windfury, Stormstrike, Maelstrom Weapon, and Rage of the Farseer gradually turn the simple early-game melee build into the full hybrid spec.
Shaman Best-in-Slot Gear in WoW Forever (WIP)
Talking about BiS gear when the level cap is 20 during WoW Forever’s beta is futile. Once the game releases, I’ll cover it all.
Best Shaman Rotations in WoW Forever
Shaman gameplay is more of a priority system than a fixed rotation. Don’t sweat if you can’t stick to the plan perfectly. Playing Shaman is being able to adapt to any situation the game throws at you. A few things to note: Shocks share cooldowns, Totems change with the encounter, and Enhancement has Maelstrom Weapon procs that you need to react to. Restoration’s flow is the least straightforward one, as it works around incoming damage instead of repeating one sequence.
Elemental Shaman Rotation
- Pop the Totems that make sense for the situation
- Apply Flame Shock
- Use Lava Burst
- Use Chain Lightning for multiple targets
- Fill with Lightning Bolt
- Use Fire Nova for AoE
- Use Earth Shock when you need an interrupt
The main idea is keeping Flame Shock active and squeezing in Lava Burst during normal Lightning rotation without wasting Mana.
Enhancement Shaman Rotation
- Keep your weapon imbue active
- Keep Lightning Shield active
- Maintain useful Totems
- Use Stormstrike
- Spend full Maelstrom Weapon stacks on Lightning Bolt
- Use Earth Shock
- Maintain Flame Shock when worthwhile
- Use Fire Nova for AoE
- Use Rage of the Farseer during burst windows
Windfury remains a big part of Enhancement, but Maelstrom Weapon and Stormstrike give you much more to do between procs.
Restoration Shaman Rotation
- Use Riptide for instant healing
- Use Healing Wave for efficient single-target healing
- Use Lesser Healing Wave for emergencies
- Use Chain Heal when several players take damage
- Keep Water Shield active
- Maintain useful healing and utility Totems
- Interrupt or Purge when doing so prevents more damage
Restoration is about choosing the correct heal rather than following a fixed sequence, as I said before.
Best Shaman Professions in WoW Forever (WIP)
Several profession combinations work well for Shaman. I don’t think that full version of Forever will change much of what Shamans traditionally work with. Leatherworking is good for some BiS slots, and considering Forever’s slower approach to leveling and gameplay, I’d bet that manual labor is gonna be more favored now. Alchemy is another option that can be useful, as it helps with Health and Mana management. Forever also adds 600 profession recipes, so the final recommendation can change once everything is available. For now, Leatherworking + Skinning is the easiest recommendation because you directly use the gear you craft.
Best Shaman Consumables in WoW Forever (WIP)
This section is another one that will be updated with the release of the full game. Just know that you get stat bonuses along with leveling XP bonus, so it’s gonna be a huge part of the game later on.
F.A.Q
Is Shaman good in WoW Forever?
Yes. Shaman can fill two DPS roles or heal while bringing strong Totem utility, Purge, interrupts, self-healing, and Reincarnation.
What is the best Shaman spec for leveling in WoW Forever?
For me, it’s Enhancement. Weapon damage keeps downtime low, while healing, Shocks, and Totems give you plenty of tools when fights get harder.
Can Alliance play Shaman in WoW Forever?
Yes. Dwarf Shaman gives Alliance access to the class and is currently its only Shaman race.
What is the best Horde race for Shaman in WoW Forever?
I’d currently choose Orc for Enhancement. Troll and Windshaper Skyborne look better suited to caster-focused Shaman builds.
