Abyss Anglers Guide for Midnight 12.0.5 Quick Overview:
- Abyss Anglers is a new mini-game where you dive under the water and harpoon fish to earn a score
- Abyss Anglers isn’t tied to gear progression, so it is completely optional.
- When underwater, you get a supply of Oxygen that will let you stay under for about 2 minutes, after which you need to replenish by going back to the surface.
- Abyss Anglers is not an instanced activity; you will meet other players. You can team up with them to take down a boss-level underwater monster
- The rewards include housing decor, a pet, crafting reagents, a couple of transmog sets, and a weapon transmog.
Catching fish with a harpoon is exciting, but what's even more exciting is being able to buy WoW Gold at Skycoach. Getting any amount of gold has never been easier!

Midnight 12.0.5 Abyss Anglers Explained

I’d like to start with a quick overview of what this activity is, so you have a general idea right off the bat. So, Abyss Anglers is sort of a mini-game where you dive deep underwater in a suit, you swim around, and harpoon all kinds of fish or loot relics. The whole thing has a score system that rates each dive based on the action that you took, which includes more than just harpooning fish. When you’re diving, you get a temporary, quick bar with only 3 abilities and a bar that shows your current Oxygen level.
![]()
If you run out of Oxygen, the dive will end, and you won’t get bonus points for exiting safely. So, there aren’t any real consequences for failing a dive, besides losing some points.
By all intents and purposes, this is a casual activity, something to do to take a break from the regular gameplay. All rewards are purely cosmetic, so if you don’t like it, you don’t have to do it because it doesn’t offer any gear progression whatsoever. Now, let’s go over some details, starting with the quest and accessing the Abyss Anglers.
How to Unlock Abyss Anglers

To unlock Abyss Anglers, all you have to do is locate the Depthdiver Jeju NPC, who can be found on a remote island to the East of the Temple of Jan’alai in Zul’Aman. There’s no direct flight path to that island, so just use any flying mount. The precise coordinates are 68.2 20.0. He will have a quest for you, simply titled Joining the Abyss Anglers. The quest will have you catch 3 fish, loot one Sunken Relic, and then use the Surface ability to finish the dive.
Abilities and Gameplay Loop

As I said before, you get a temporary HUD that features only 3 abilities and a bar that shows your oxygen level. Those abilities are:
- Dash - mostly used to get around faster or dodge incoming attacks
- Fire Harpoon - this is how you deal damage and catch fish. The aiming part is manual.
- Surface! - ends the dive by sending you to the surface.
You start a dive by speaking with Jeju or just by entering the water near him. Once you’re under the water, the interface will switch to a temporary one with those 3 abilities on display. The swimming is similar to regular swimming in the game. The oxygen bar lasts you about 2 minutes, but it can be upgraded later on to allow you to go on longer dives.
Catching fish is done by shooting a harpoon at them, but you have to aim manually in order to hit them with it. Aiming can be a bit tricky at times, because you have to do it at a distance. Otherwise, the fish gets spooked and will try to swim away quickly. Trying to hit a fish that is trying to get away from you in this sort of “panic” state is very difficult, and it might be frustrating to hit it like that.
If you want to land your harpoon shots a bit more consistently, I suggest doing it while not moving around. Just hold the right mouse button to aim and let go of movement keys, then press “2” to use the Fire Harpoon ability. I’ve noticed that this way I hit more times than when I’ve done it while moving.
You can even do regular fishing using your Fishing Pole during a dive! Yes, it’s called Abyss Bubble fishing, and basically, the seabed has some bubbles, if you stop near them, you’ll be able use your Fishing Pole and Bait in the same way as you do when finishing on the surface.
Fish Scales Armor

Catching a fish takes a bit more than hitting it with a harpoon once. You see, fish have scales, which act as some sort of armor or health, so you have to hit the same fish several times to decrease the amount of scales on it and then hit it one more time to catch it. Different fish have different numbers of scales.
Types of Fish
Just like with everything else in the game, fish have different rarities, and the number of scales they have depends on it. Generally, the rarer the fish, the harder it is to catch.
- Common - 0-2 scales
- Uncommon - 1-2 scales
- Rare - 2+ scales
- Epic - 3+ scales
- Mythic - 3+ scales
- Legendary - 3+ scales
Some fish have over 90 scales, and they represent a sort of boss fight. But since this is an open-world activity, players in the area can bundle up and work together to break the scales.
Some fish, such as shark-looking ones, can and will attack you. Taking any damage depletes your Oxygen reserve. Luckily, you can find Oxygen refills near the air whirlwinds, each of which gives you +100 Oxygen.
Then there are schools of fish, which are the easiest to catch, but they don’t give you as many points for capturing them.
Relics and Other Interactables

Besides fish, there are a couple of other objects you can interact with. There are grapple points that you can use to move around more quickly, and air whirlwinds that you can use to get to the surface quickly.
Then there are relics, which are essentially chests hidden somewhere on the seabed. There are two types: Sunken Relic and Ancient Relic, and the only difference between the two is how much score each one gives you for interacting with it. Although you need a Pressurized Eyeglass upgrade in order to find Ancient Relics. This is a great segue to talk about the scoring system.
Small Creatures
Besides capturing fish and looting relics, there are also small creatures that you can capture with a special item called a Net. There are two types of nets:
- Shallows Net - used for capturing Barbed Crawlers and Thorny Seahorses
- Tripple-Thread Net - used for capturing Deep Whelks and Bilejellies
You can buy these from Depthdiver Tu’nakit after completing two achievements - Abyss Anglers: Shallows Net and Abyss Anglers: Triple-Thread Net. A lot of other upgrades for the dives are unlocked by completing achievements. Check out my achievements section for more information about that.
Abyss Anglers Scoring System
During a dive, different activities give you a different amount of points, which is then summarised in a total score at the end of the dive. Why does score matter? The final score decides how many Angler Pearls you’ll be rewarded, and that is the main currency for this activity. I’ll talk about what you can spend the Pearls on in the Rewards section. Here’s a list of actions and the points you’ll get for them:
|
Abyss Anglers action |
Points gained |
|
Catch a common fish with the harpoon |
50 |
|
Catch an uncommon fish with the harpoon |
100 |
|
Catch a rare fish with the harpoon |
200 |
|
Catch an epic fish with the harpoon |
300 |
|
Catch a legendary fish with the harpoon |
500 |
|
Catch a mythic fish with the harpoon |
1,000 |
|
Pass through a fish school while swimming |
25 |
|
Collect a fish from an Abyss Bubble |
25 plus fish rarity bonus |
|

Varies |
|
Find a Sunken Relic |
500 |
|
Find an Ancient Relic |
750 |
|
Return to the surface safely |
1,000 |
Note that the safe return to the surface is equal to catching a mythic fish, so while dying from lack of oxygen isn’t the end of the world, it does take away a lot of points from the final score. Also, it’s worth noting that it's entirely possible to not get any Angler Pearls whatsoever if you finish a dive without a single catch.

Abyss Angler Rewards and Vendor Items
As I already mentioned, the main currency that you spend on Abyss Angler unique items is called Angler Pearls, which are rewarded based on the score you earn at the end of the dive. I’ve already covered the suit upgrades that you can purchase with this currency, but now let's talk about what else you can buy. Depthdiver Tu'nakit is the vendor that sells all the things you can buy, namely there are:
