ARC Raiders Frozen Trail Update Explained

After a huge launch, ARC Raiders didn’t really have any significant updates. Most of them added weather conditions, new enemies, and some new weapons, but they were minor additions that players were quickly able to get/deal with, quickly drying up the already shallow well of endgame content. With the Frozen Trail update, it seems that the developers aim to fix that. I doubt we’ll see the half-a-million active-player resurgence in the game, even with a free period from October 8 to October 12, but in anticipation of the patch, the game already had growth from ~20k to almost 50k active players. So here's what’s new in the Frozen Trail update, and why we as players should be excited for it in ARC Raiders:
|
Frozen Trail Feature |
What It Adds |
|
Pendola Pass |
New map |
|
Frigate |
High-level ARC activity, almost a separate map on its own |
|
Outpost |
Customizable player base |
|
Weapon Amplification |
Branching upgrade paths for all weapons |
|
New Weapons |
Stiletto and Bantam |
|
New ARC |
Bully, Skulker, Hydra |
|
New Gadgets |
Grappling Hook, Tether Launcher, Yank Grenade |
|
Reward Pass |
New Battle Pass option that comes along with Raider Decks |
|
Skill Tree |
Reworked skills and progression |
What makes me excited about this update is Frigate and the Weapon Amplification part. For me, and I dare say for many players, the main issue with ARC Raiders was a distinct lack of endgame content. Like, yeah, you get your storage stacked with expensive stuff, kill a few Matriarchs, but what then? For me, it seems that getting the amped up weapons and boarding a Frigate are the endgame activities instead of insanely boring farming for the Expedition. Before I go over the most significant additions to the game, let me briefly explain some that I don’t have much info on:
- Reward Pass: That’s just a battle pass with free and premium tracks that unlock various cosmetics, such as outfits, furniture for the Raider Outpost, and Tokens. They also add loot for a free track. I kinda hate that they add rare gameplay loot in battle passes, as well as Raider Decks, so I hope that we won’t see stuff like Anvil Splitter in it
- Photo Mode: Finally, we get a fully fledged photo mode. ARC Raiders is an insanely beautiful game, largely due to its art design, which is no doubt outstanding
- Instruments: Harmonia and Banjo are coming to the game. More ways to socialize with players or lure them into your traps
- Skill Tree Rework: I don’t think I’m gonna be alone in this if I say that it seemed that the skill tree wasn’t very exciting. The need to get boring upgrades to get to decent ones is what killed all the excitement from your hard-earned skill points, and the pinnacle upgrades didn’t make any sense. Why would I want to spend points on one-shotting small flying ARC with my instrument?
Admittedly, some of the points above can be discussed in a separate paragraph of the article, but I think it’ll just drag it out. I’d happily discuss a new skill tree, but there’s only some speculated information on this topic, and I don’t want to be unsubstantiated. So let’s talk about things I have a pretty good understanding of.
New ARC Raiders Frozen Trail Map

Pendola Pass is a new map that takes us beyond the mountain range surrounding the Rust Belt. It’s the first time we get outside of an already familiar zone into the unknown. It’s an old, abandoned settlement and former Exodus transport hub from what we know. As far as POIs go, we get an old village, some supermarket, observatory, train depot, some factories, and lots of verticality, as we now have Grappling Hooks as gadgets, more on that later. The lore reason for Raiders going here is that a fallen Emperor ARC containing rare new technology has been found on this map. Of course, ARC will not give their secrets that easily. The major ARC Raiders Pendola Pass features currently confirmed are:
- A fallen Emperor that can be entered and explored
- Much greater focus on vertical traversal
- Underground and above-ground areas as on Blue Gate
- Flash Freeze weather event, which is pretty different from last year’s winter event
- New ARC enemies
- The Frigate major map condition
- New Exodus Project locations and lore
I want you to focus on two things. The first is Flash Freeze, a weather hazard that periodically sweeps the valley with its cold embrace. It’s not the same as Cold Snap, as the freezing condition is innate to this map at all times. The second is The Frigate. It’s the first time we see such a large ARC vessel, and it arrives at Pendola Pass as a reaction to the Emperor’s emergency call. You can board it, explore its internal passageways, almost like the UESC Marathon, but obviously on a much smaller scale. It’s not a separate map, it’s a map condition. Frigate is also a place where a new enemy appears, called Hydra. Speaking of.
New ARC Enemies Coming to ARC Raiders Frozen Trail

We get three new enemies, and they seem like a major threat. I believe only one of them is a big ARC, akin to Rocketeer or a Leaper, and the rest are normal ARCs that are still gonna give players a hard time. They all have distinct features, and I gotta admit, despite the developers being infamous for their game support, their imagination and ways to challenge players in new ways are bar none. I like that they have an intent to make ARCs scary again. Here are the new ARCs coming in the Frozen Trail update:
|
ARC Enemy |
How It Fights |
|
Bully |
It’s in the name. Aggressive machine that oppresses players, constantly chasing and attacking them |
|
Skulker |
Kind of like a sniper. Opportunistic enemy that stays around the edge of fights and repositions. One of the devs says that it has a tendency to appear behind your back even when you fight it |
|
Hydra |
Stationary three-part turret capable of fighting several squads at the same time |
The final ARC seems to directly address the issue of ARCs having a hard time when choosing whom to attack between the two squads. Why choose when you can target everyone? Bully seems like a Leaper 2.0 with the way it climbs and stumbles clumsily, but it also has a weapon mounted on it, unlike Leaper, whose only weapon is its weight.
ARC Raiders Outposts

A feature that I believe will be one of the fan favorites. I guess the idea has always been on the surface, cause nowadays like 99.99% of extraction shooters have some sort of base, some even making it a core part of the gameplay loop. Well, it seems that ARC Raiders isn’t falling behind (it is), and getting us a place to decorate with hundreds of rubber duckies. Instead of spending all of your downtime inside menus and the Raider Den, you’ll get a physical base located between the Rust Belt and the mountains leading toward Pendola Pass. You can decorate it, install different modules, add furniture, and eventually use it for research. It’s pretty hard not to make the Tarkov Hideout comparison here, although Embark seems much more interested in making the Outpost a personalized space rather than purely another spreadsheet of passive bonuses. The Outpost currently includes:
- Customizable modules
- Furniture and interior decoration
- The new Research Workstation
- Ways to modify your weapons
The Research Workstation is the most important part of this update. When you fully upgrade it, it unlocks Weapon Amplification, which is another huge part of Frozen Trail. I guess that Raider Den will eventually move here instead of being part of the menu. I love hubs in games like these, so I’m as happy as any player with this update. The developers explicitly said that the Outpost is only the beginning. Fingers crossed we won’t get a new part of the base only once a year, and it will be something closer to three months.

New ARC Raiders Frozen Trail Weapons

In Frozen Trail, we get two new weapons, and if you scratch your head cause you’ve heard that the weapon system is having the biggest upgrade, it’s because of Weapon Amplification. But first, let’s talk about two new weapons in ARC Raiders:
|
Weapon |
Ammo |
What it Does |
|
Stiletto |
Light Ammo |
Early-game battle rifle for medium to long range |
|
Bantam |
Heavy Ammo |
Revolver that’s described as a “contrast to the Anvil” |
Not very detailed, is it? Well, I think that Stiletto just fills the missing role of a battle rifle representative in the lower-rarity bracket. It is cheap to craft and can fire quickly, but rapidly tapping the trigger tanks its accuracy, so you’re better off pacing shots from medium or long range. The developers also described it as more effective against ARC than the Kettle while still being perfectly usable against Raiders. Bantam is way more interesting. It’s a snub-nosed revolver. There’s way less info on how it works compared to Stiletto, but it has a hip-fire animation seen in cowboy movies.
ARC Raiders Weapon Amplification

Weapon Amplification becomes available through a fully upgraded Research Workstation in your Outpost. Supported weapons gain what devs describe as essentially a fifth quality level, but it's not just a stat upgrade. Reaching it opens special branches. Only 15 weapons support Amplification at launch, with more planned later. Three examples of Weapon Amplification that have been officially shown:
|
Weapon |
Amplification Example |
|
Burletta |
Full-auto pistol working almost like an SMG |
|
Renegade |
Can turn into a full sniper rifle with a scope |
|
Rattler |
Can get incendiary ammo and a 64-round drum mag |
That Burletta example pretty much explains the entire system. You’re not just getting Burletta V with another few percent buff. The Rattler can go in a completely different direction with either special ammunition or a ridiculous magazine, so we can expect multiple choice options for an upgrade. I’m very curious to see what happens to the current weapon meta once all 15 Amplified options are released. Guns that barely get touched right now could suddenly blow in popularity. Will I ever see Bettina become the top of the food chain? Will it be like Magikarp's evolution once you unlock Bettina V? We’ll see on October 8.
New Frozen Trail Gadgets

The new gadgets all revolve around movement and physics rather than dealing direct damage, which I really like. Grappling Hook opens more traversal routes and is way more potent than Snap Hook, while the tether gadgets physically mess with ARC and enemy Raiders. Pendola Pass also has much more verticality than previous maps, even compared to Riven Tides, so these tools were pretty clearly designed together with the environment. Here’s a list of new ARC Raiders Frozen Trail gadgets:
- Grappling Hook: Attach a rope to surfaces, climb buildings, rappel downward, swing across gaps, or even attach yourself to ARCs, why not
- Tether Launcher: Connect two points with a tether, pin targets in place, or attach a Raider to an ARC and let nature take its course
- Tether Grenade: Slams the closest target toward the point where it was attached, including Raiders behind cover or flying ARC
Grappling Hook can become the next skill gadget in ARC Raiders, and learning how to use it properly will make a day-and-night difference between players.
