The Dreamrift Overview

The Dreamrift guide is one of two raids featured at the launch of Season 1. It’s a one-boss raid where you will fight Chimaerus the Undreamt God. The story behind the Dreamrift raid is tied to the fall of Aln’hara, whose absence left the realm twisted by pain and madness. As nightmare manifestations turned on each other, Chimaerus grew stronger by feeding on the void and consuming what remained. By the time players enter the raid, Chimaerus has become the monstrous force at the center of that corruption.

The raid becomes available on March 17 for the US and March 18 for the EU in Raid Finder, Normal, and Heroic difficulties. The Story Mode is also there, in case you wondered. Mythic difficulty will become available on March 24th. The requirements to enter the raid are as follows:

  1. Level 90
  2. Ilvl 220 (For LFR)
  3. Access to Harandar: The Root Cause quest is complete (part of the “Of Caves and Cradles” questline in Harandar)

Once all requirements are met, you can queue up for the Dreamrift raid from the Raid Finder or go to its entrance in Harandar.

As for the arena itself, it is called the Dreamrift. According to the lore, this place lies deep within the Rift of Aln, where Aln’hara’s dreams once took form before the realm was twisted by pain and madness. In gameplay terms, the arena is a wide circular platform with no major obstacles, but you can fall off the edges if you get knocked back or misstep during mechanics.

Chimaerus the Undreamt God Tactics

The fight with Chimaerus has two phases, where you have to split up the raid party into two groups, one of which will be put in a separate realm called Aln. Both groups will have to deal with the summoned adds - the group in the Aln will need to attack the adds to disable their shields, after which those adds will be sent to the normal realm, and they will rush towards the Chimaerus and get consumed by the boss, which increases the damage and restores health. The group in the normal realm needs to focus on those adds and kill them before they get consumed by the boss.

Below you’ll see a table where I listed the attacks and abilities that the boss and its adds do.

Enemy

Abilities

Chimaerus

Alndust Upheaval, Rift Emergence, Insatiable, Caustic Phlegm, Rending Tear, Consume, Corrupted Devastation, Ravenous Dive, Rift Shroud; Consuming Miasma (Heroic+); Dissonance, Rift Madness (Mythic only)

Colossal Horror

Discordant Roar, Colossal Strikes

Haunting Essence

Fearsome Cry, Essence Bolt

Swarming Shade

No named abilities

Considering the fact that in this raid you can have up to 25 party members in LFG, Normal, and Heroic (20 for Mythic), you’ll typically have at least 1 tank, 2 healers, and 7 DPS in each group.

Now, how do you make sure that one group gets sent into the Aln? Once you pull the boss at the start of the fight, the boss will use Alndust Upheaval, which is an AoE attack targeted at a tank. Anyone within a 10-yard radius of the tank will be damaged, splitting the overall damage, and sent together to the Aln realm.

Once in the Aln, the tank needs to aggro all of the adds and lead them away from the boss. Think about this way - you pull the boss to the corner of the arena at the start of the fight, and then in the Aln, the tank pulls the adds into the opposite corner. Then, everyone in the Aln just deals damage to deplete the shields that adds have. Breaking the shield will spawn a pool of yellow goo, which damages anyone in it, so avoid those.

Tip: to make sure you don’t cover the entire arena with that nasty stuff, focus on breaking the big add’s shield first. That’s the highest priority. The smaller adds will naturally group up, so when you break their shields, the yellow pools will stay bundled in one area instead of being spread across the arena.

Those pools of yellow goo are called Alndust Essence, and they can be removed in a somewhat painful way.

Consuming Miasma is a debuff applied to one of the players by the boss. The debuff does about 50k damage every 1.5 seconds for 1 minute, but when you dispel it when the player with the debuff is standing over the Alndust Essence, it will remove any of those nasty pools within 10 yards, because the debuff actually has a circular radius around the player it's on.

Tip: have the player with Consuming Miasma stand over Alndust Essence and then dispel the debuff to also remove the pools.

The adds in question are called Colossal Horror - the big one, and the Haunting Essence - the smaller ones. Swarming Shades is the smallest and weakest type of add that you’ll fight in the raid. Once their shields are destroyed in the Aln, the group in the normal realm needs to tank the big one and interrupt Haunting Essence add to prevent them from using something like a Fearsome Cry, which sends players running uncontrollably, and not let them all get close to Chimaerus to be consumed.

Review the table with abilities above to learn more about what adds can do, and which of their abilities are more dangerous than the others.

Once the adds are dead, the second group needs to stand closer to their tank and prepare to get yoinked into Aln. The reason you switch groups that go into the other realm is the debuff called Rift Vulnerability, which basically prevents the same tank from taking that Alndust Upheaval damage the second time because it would just deal 600% more damage. If you’re playing on LFG difficulty, the same tank can do this every time.

At some point, Chimaerus gains enough energy to cast Consume, and if any adds are alive by the time the cast is done, it’s game over for you. Because any add consumed restores Chimaerus’s health by 200% of its HP and provides a 100% damage boost, it leads to a wipe rather quickly. Otherwise, if no adds are alive, you go to phase 2.

Phase 2: To the Skies

In this phase, the boss flies up in the air and starts spitting acid projectiles with Caustic Phlegm on the entire raid party.

Note: Don’t try to damage the boss in this phase; it’s almost immune to damage. So, just treat this phase as an intermission.

Then the boss will do a fly-by attack called Corrupted Devastation, which deals a huge amount of Nature damage and also leaves Alndust Essence on the ground as a trail. Worst of all, the boss also spawns more Manifestation adds with this attack, which you need to focus on immediately. The priority is the same as in Phase 1 - the big add first, then Haunting Essence, and finally the Swarming Shades.

After a few of these fly-bys, Chimaerus will perform a Ravenous Dive and smash into the ground, dealing damage to all players and knocking all of you up into the air. Before this dive happens, make sure there are no active adds and everyone’s health is maxed out. If not, the boss will consume them, gaining health and damage boost, which means a wipe because this far in the raid, your party will likely have run out of powerful cooldowns.

Once the boss is back on the ground, you’re basically back in phase 1, and you already know what to do there.
