AION 2 Empyrean Traces Feathers Guide

Empyrean Traces, or as the community calls them, Feathers, are one of the exploration collectibles you really don’t want to ignore in AION 2. You collect and resonate them with your faction’s Monolith for permanent stats, enhance scrolls, titles, and other rewards. The Global version works differently from KR/TW, especially when it comes to skill points and how many feathers you actually need. In this AION 2 Empyrean Traces Guide, I’ll explain Monolith Resonance, the rewards you get, and the best way to collect feathers without going insane.

AION 2 Empyrean Traces

Empyrean Traces are glowing collectibles scattered across AION 2’s open-world zones. Pretty much everyone and their mother calls them Feathers because that’s what they look like, and “Empyrean Trace” is a mouthful, especially when you say it out loud multiple times. You collect them while exploring and use the accumulated Traces to increase the level of a regional Monolith, which unlocks permanent character rewards. Though many players think that these are just collectibles, they’re not. This system progresses your account with skill points and other stuff. Here’s how the main Trace types are split:

Empyrean Trace

Faction

Region

Monolith

Main Focus

Verteron

Elyos

Verteron

Verteron Monolith

PvE progression

Altgard

Asmodian

Altgard

Altgard Monolith

PvE progression

Reshanta

Both

Abyss

Ereshkigal Monolith

PvP progression

So both factions' feathers help you advance in PvE, while the Abyss’s ones help you with PvP progress. Note that you cannot collect both Verteron and Altgard Feathers on the same character due to how the game works. Your choice of faction automatically locks you out of the other faction’s regions, so you really want to eventually create a character for the opposing faction, since, as I said before, the progression is account-wide. Another important thing is that every region tags Traces as a separate currency, so your Verteron Traces won’t progress the Reshanta’s ones and vice versa.

How to Unlock Empyrean Traces and Monolith Resonance

You face the Empyrean Monolith quite early in the story, so this isn’t an endgame system even though finishing it becomes more relevant around endgame. The quest that introduces you to the system is in Episode 2, with a level 10 requirement and a recommended level of roughly 16. The quest teaches you everything important in about thirty seconds: find a Feather, collect it, return to the Monolith, and resonate with it to receive a reward. Rinse and repeat. The unlock is slightly different depending on your faction:

Faction

Region

Quest

Monolith NPC/Area

Elyos

Verteron

Empyrean Monolith

Jackson at Dawn Legion Base

Asmodian

Altgard

Empyrean Monolith

Ollen at Safe Haven

The very first resonance gives you a Revelation Amulet Enhance Scroll, which is a pretty good hint that the purpose of the system is permanent equipment and character progression. If you’re following our AION 2 Leveling Guide, don’t stop leveling just to start a Feather sweep at this point. If you have them on your way to a quest, grab them. If not, you've got better stuff to do.

How AION 2 Monolith Resonance Works

Monolith Resonance is a permanent reward list that you progress by finding Empyrean Traces. A Monolith has 30 levels, with later levels requiring progressively more cumulative Trace points. Every new level gives something useful. Minor rewards include Revelation Amulet Enhance Scrolls and Empyrean Lord attributes, while larger rewards grant titles and other materials. There is no RNG involved here: you collect enough Traces - you get a specific reward. The current Trace progression looks like this. Note that these are not all the rewards, but only notable ones:

Monolith Level

Required Trace Points

Reward

2

1

Revelation Amulet Enhance Scroll + Hidden Cube Key

5

20

Scroll + Hidden Cube Key + attributes

10

70

Inquirer title

15

140

Scrolls, Soul Codex Resets, attributes

20

235

Guardian of Verteron/Altgard title

25

375

Scrolls + Unique Amplify Stone Fragments

30

560

2 Amulet Scrolls + Saint of Verteron/Altgard title

One thing I want to make clear here is that 560 refers to Trace points. Current Feathers use the reduced collection system where a node provides multiple Traces, which is why you can also see others saying that you need 140 Feathers to complete level 30. Both numbers are correct, they’re just measuring different things.

How Many Empyrean Traces Do You Need?

I’ll put it simply. You get 140 Feathers, you unlock the full Monolith list of rewards. Currently, one Feather counts as four points. In previous versions, you had to find all 560 Traces cause they gave a one-to-one amount of points. There are still 560 Feathers scattered around the map, but now you don’t need to get them all, which makes it far more tolerable and less of a grind. You do still need 560 Trace points, however, but you don’t have to collect 560 Feathers. Hopefully this clears the confusion. Bottom line, there are far more Feather locations available around Verteron and Altgard than you need for progression. That’s good news, because the thought of me looking for a final feather #560 by painstakingly sweeping the entire map over and over again is excruciating. Now I only have to find whatever 140 Traces are on my way.

AION 2 Empyrean Trace Rewards

The reason why you don’t want to ignore Feathers is that the Monolith rewards are permanent. Your leveling chestpiece will be obsolete sooner or later, but the Monolith attributes and titles continue contributing to your character. The Global version also changed the rewards compared to Korea and Taiwan. There, Feathers rewarded you with a big amount of Skill Points, iirc you got 112 by getting them. It had a whole other connection to Wisdom Stones and stuff you don’t have to worry about right now cause it does not work that way on Global. AION 2 Empyrean Trace rewards include:

  • Revelation Amulet Enhance Scrolls: Used to enhance your permanent Revelation Amulet
  • Hidden Cube Keys: Allow you to open Hidden Cubes found during exploration
  • Soul Codex: Reset: Lets you redo Soul Binding-related progression choices
  • Amplify Stone Fragments (Unique): Used for later gear Amplification
  • Empyrean Lord Attributes: Permanent Life, Destiny, Time, Space, Justice, Destruction, Freedom, Death, Illusion, and Wisdom increases
  • Titles: Special titles at major Monolith milestones
  • Permanent title collection stats: Remain useful even when you equip another title

The three big title milestones are Monolith levels 10, 20, and 30. The final Saint of Verteron/Saint of Altgard title is Unique-grade, and the Altgard version, for example, gives you strong defensive stats including Defense Bonus, Damage Tolerance, and Block alongside its other effects.

AION 2 Revelation Amulet and Feathers

The Revelation Amulet is the #1 reason Empyrean Traces stay relevant beyond exploration completion. Monolith continuously rewards you with Revelation Amulet Enhance Scrolls, and those Scrolls are specifically used to upgrade this accessory through its enhancement. The Revelation Amulet gets such useful combat stats as Weapon Damage Boost and Penetration, and each +1 increases its Penetration further. Unlike random dungeon jewelry, this is an item built to follow you through multiple progression stages, kinda leveling up with you, so you can safely invest your materials in it. Here’s how you want to work with the AION 2 Revelation Amulet:

  1. Obtain the Revelation Amulet through the early MSQ
  2. Collect Empyrean Traces in Verteron or Altgard
  3. Increase your Monolith level
  4. Claim Revelation Amulet Enhance Scrolls
  5. Enhance the Amulet to +10
  6. Use Substance Morph to move it into the next grade
  7. Repeat the enhancement process as more Scrolls become available

You get 30 Revelation Amulet Enhance Scrolls along with other Monolith rewards. This is an extremely useful piece of gear cause it stays relevant even in endgame and beyond. Don’t sleep on it.

How to Find Empyrean Traces Fast

While some people like to rush through the story and do the side content later, this is not the case in AION 2. First of all, Empyrean Traces are not side content, they’re directly tied to your account progression. The worst possible way to collect Feathers is to reach level 45 with practically zero of them, open a 560-marker interactive map, and set on a quest to get all of them and do nothing else while you’re on it. If you don’t wanna see glowing feathers when you go to bed, there’s a better way to do it. Collect them passively while doing the Main Story, Regional Quests, Sealed Dungeons, Strongholds, and other activities. Verteron and Altgard have hundreds of known Feather positions, so there is no need to follow one extremely strict route just to get the needed 140 Feathers. I recommend collecting them like this:

  1. Pick up every Feather directly on your quest route: Five seconds now saves you dedicated farming later.
  2. Don’t make huge detours while leveling: A Feather a minute away from you is fine, and one on the opposite side of the zone can wait
  3. Finish exploration region by region: Once you want to farm them properly, divide Verteron or Altgard into smaller areas rather than zigzagging across the entire map
  4. Use an interactive map for cleanup: Mark each Feather as completed so you don’t revisit the same location. I recommend this one personally, and it’s not an ad, just a genuinely convenient map
  5. Stop when the Monolith is finished: You do not need to 100% the feathers unless you’re a completionist

Something that makes some Feathers a bit more confusing to get is that there’s no indication if the Feather is above you or below. The marker can look like you’re standing directly on top of a Feather when it is actually fifty meters above you, which is not that big of a deal cause then you just fly up, but the worse thing is that when it’s hidden in a cave or a dungeon below.

AION 2 Abyss Feathers and Ereshkigal Monolith

Reshanta has a completely separate Empyrean Trace track tied to the Ereshkigal Monolith. These Abyss Feathers do not level your Verteron or Altgard Monolith, and the rewards are much more PvP-focused. The current Global client contains 20 Ereshkigal Monolith levels, compared with 30 for the faction Monoliths, with the full ladder requiring 300 Reshanta Trace points. The reward differences are pretty obvious:

Monolith

Max Level

Main Rewards

Verteron/Altgard

30

Revelation Amulet Scrolls, attributes, Keys, Soul Codex Resets, Amplify materials

Ereshkigal

20

Daevanion Crystal: Azphel, PvP stats, Amplify materials, titles

The Ereshkigal track rewards you with permanent PvP Attack, PvP Defense, Accuracy, Evasion, and Block bonuses as you progress. It also rewards Daevanion Crystal: Azphel at practically every level, with titles of Guardian of Ereshkigal at level 10 and Saint of Ereshkigal at level 20. To max out the Ereshkigal Monolith, you need 300 cumulative Trace points at level 20. Unlike the main region’s Feathers, these give 1 point per Feather collected. The funniest part is that you can only gather 200 of them right now, cause the central part of the Abyss called Core isn’t open yet, but when it opens, you’ll get another 100 Feathers to get. While you can focus on getting them all immediately, I don’t recommend it. Your time in the AION 2 Abyss is already limited to just 7-8 hours a week. Do you really want to spend a good chunk of it just looking for them instead of actually playing the game? The recommendation is still the same: grab only the Feathers that are on your way or not far from you.

F.A.Q

Are Feathers and Empyrean Traces the same thing in AION 2?

Yes. Players normally call Empyrean Traces Feathers because of their appearance in the open world, but the item you actually obtain is an Empyrean Trace tied to a specific region. Verteron, Altgard, and Reshanta Traces each progress their corresponding Monolith.

How many Feathers do you need to max out the Monolith in AION 2 Global?

You need 140 Feather pickups to complete the current home-region Monolith because each collected Feather contributes four Trace points toward the 560-point progression requirement. This is why you may see both 140 and 560 mentioned in different guides: 140 is the number of pickups, while 560 is the cumulative Trace requirement shown by the Monolith.

How many levels does the Monolith have in AION 2?

The Verteron Monolith for Elyos and the Altgard Monolith for Asmodians each have 30 levels. The PvP-focused Ereshkigal Monolith in Reshanta has 20 levels, with a different reward track based around PvP stats and Daevanion Crystal: Azphel.

Do Empyrean Traces give Skill Points in AION 2 Global?

No, the Global Monolith track does not use the old KR/TW system where Feathers were one of the main sources of Skill Points. Global moved those rewards toward Regional Quests, Sealed Dungeons, and other progression, while Empyrean Traces now focus on the Revelation Amulet, permanent attributes, titles, and other materials.

Where is the Monolith for Elyos and Asmodians?

Elyos use the Verteron Monolith around Dawn Legion Base, where Jackson introduces the system during the Episode 2 quest. Asmodians use the Altgard Monolith at Safe Haven, where Ruins Administrator Ollen handles the introductory Monolith quest.

Are Abyss Feathers different from normal Feathers in AION 2?

Yes. Reshanta Feathers give Empyrean Trace: Reshanta and progress the Ereshkigal Monolith instead of your Verteron or Altgard Monolith. Its rewards are built around PvP progression, including permanent PvP stats and Daevanion Crystal: Azphel, so I’d collect them while doing normal Abyss content rather than treating them as part of your PvE Feather grind.
