WARDOGS Leveling Guide

Who would have thought you’d see RuneScape-style leveling in an FPS. In this WARDOGS leveling guide, I’ll explain how leveling works, the difference between role level and WARDOGS level, and what actions give you the most XP.

WARDOGS Leveling Guide Quick Overview:

  1. WARDOGS features permanent player progression in the form of levels for each role.
  2. The Skill system tied to the levels is in the works. We have no ETA yet.
  3. The general level in the game is the sum of each role’s level.
  4. Gaining XP for your role can be done by performing specific actions or using specified equipment.
  5. If you want to unlock a specific gun or a vehicle, you have to grind the role level it is tied to.

WARDOGS Leveling Explained

If you’ve heard about WARDOGS, the good chance is you’ve heard that in this game you are not locked into classes or roles like in Battlefield games; instead, your loadout (the things you take with you) defines what you can do. This is what I’ve mentioned at least in one of my guides for this game so far. And if you want a broader overview for this game, please do check out my Beginner’s Guide.

In any case, in terms of progression, the roles do exist. So, in simple words, if you like doing medic stuff, you’ll unlock better things related to medic. And there are six roles:

  1. Assault
  2. Medic
  3. Support
  4. Recon
  5. Drive
  6. Pilot

These roles are pretty self-explanatory, and I don’t think I need to break down what each one does.

Furthermore, each role is basically its own progression track with levels. So when you gain XP for a certain role and level it up, you will unlock something for that role. Each role’s maximum level is 100.

There’s also the WARDOG level, which isn’t a separate XP bar; it’s just a combined total of your six role levels. For example: Assault 5 + Medic 5 + Recon 3 + Support 9 + Driver 5 + Pilot 10 = WARDOG Level 37.

How to Level up a Role in WARDOGS?

Weapons and items all grant XP towards a specific role; just hover over an item, and it’ll tell you which role it's meant for. And remember that you can just combine weapons and items for different roles and therefore level up different roles at the same time as you naturally use those items in your loadout.

Right now, I’ll give you a small preview of what counts towards gaining a level in each role and later on, I’ll list specific actions that do that for you. Here we go:

  • Assault: combat with Assault-tagged weapons.
  • Medic: SMG kills and using medical equipment such as Bandages and Defibrillators on teammates.
  • Recon: sniper/DMR combat plus spotting. This is one of the best fast-leveling methods to substantiate.
  • Support: construction, Support weapons, explosives, vehicle destruction/repair, and logistics-related activity.
  • Driver: transporting players, moving supplies, and operating ground vehicles, making round trips in ground vehicles
  • Pilot: the airborne equivalent. Transport teammates, move supplies, and operate helicopters.

You can naturally combine these roles and get XP for multiple roles, for instance:

  • Helicopter + supplies → Pilot + Support

and

  • Truck + supplies → Driver + Support

Oh, and before I forget, performing role-specific actions (basically anything besides walking and running) also gives you cash on top of XP. And by the way, read more on how to make more cash in the game with my “How to make money fast in WARDOGS” guide.

And now, I’ll try to list which weapons and actions grant role XP.

Weapon kills: which role gets the XP?

As I’ve said, using each weapon and item in the game grants role XP, and honestly, the correlation makes perfect sense. Here’s the table:

Weapon / attack type

Role XP

Assault Rifle kill

Assault / Infantry XP

Pistol kill

Assault / Infantry XP

M67 Frag Grenade kill

Assault / Infantry XP

SMG kill

Medic XP

Sniper Rifle kill

Recon XP

Marksman Rifle / DMR kill

Recon XP

Compound Bow kill

Recon XP

Shotgun kill

Support XP

LMG kill

Support XP

Launcher kill

Support XP

Support explosive kill, such as C4, AT Mine, Claymore or IED

Support XP

Driver-tagged ground vehicle weapon kill

Driver XP

Pilot-tagged helicopter weapon kill

Pilot XP

SPH-2/L52 artillery kill

Support XP, despite being a ground vehicle

Basically, every AR and every pistol is Infantry XP (meaning Assault). Medic contains only the four SMGs. Recon contains sniper rifles, marksman rifles, and the Compound Bow. Support contains shotguns, LMGs, and launchers.

Vehicle weapons are tagged individually too. As far as I’m aware, 35mm Oerlikon, L55A1 cannon, M249 mounted MG, and MG3A1 coaxial to Driver; the 2A42 autocannon, B-13 rocket pods, and M134D Minigun to Pilot; and the L52 artillery cannon to Support.

Assault XP Actions

I’m sure everyone could guess what actions provide Assault XP, but here’s the list anyway:

  • Kill an enemy with an Assault Rifle
  • Kill an enemy with a pistol
  • Kill an enemy with an M67 Frag Grenade
  • Use the Halligan Bar to breach/pry open locked doors

So don’t disregard the sidearms! All five currently indexed pistols, Deagle, GGX 17, GGX 18, Judge, and M1911, carry the Infantry Role XP tag just like ARs.

Medic XP Actions

Medic has more separate XP triggers than you think. Most of it has to do with the fact that you might get XP not right away, but after time.

  • Kill an enemy with an SMG
  • Heal an injured teammate
  • Use Bandages on teammates
  • Heal teammates with an Individual First Aid Kit
  • Heal teammates with a Medical Bag
  • Manually revive a downed teammate
  • Revive with Emergency Resuscitator
  • Revive with Field Resuscitator
  • Revive with Defibrillator
  • Revive with Medical Bag
  • A player you revived later gets a kill or assist

The particularly interesting one is the last action. After reviving someone, subsequent kills or assists made by that player will award the Medic additional Medic XP.

I’ve even heard players say that using Bandages on yourself is wasteful!

Recon XP Actions

You can farm Recon XP while practically doing nothing; check these out:

  • Successfully spot an enemy player
  • Successfully spot an enemy vehicle
  • A target you spotted gets killed
  • Get a kill on a target you spotted
  • Get a Kill Assist on a spotted target
  • Kill with a Sniper Rifle
  • Kill/assist with a Marksman Rifle or DMR
  • Kill/assist with a Recon-tagged Sniper Rifle
  • Kill/assist with the Compound Bow

All you have to do is whip out your binoculars and mark the enemies, which then get highlighted on the minimap for your team for some time. If that spotted target then gets killed by your teammates, there is another Recon XP reward.

And it's not just something silly like “ooh im just gonna sit in the corner and watch through binoculars while not helping”. No, marking enemies is actually OP, because it gives the teammates information about, at least, the distance to the enemy and their general location, and that is mega useful when you’re trying to attack or defend some sort of POI.

The spotting tools currently associated with Recon are:

Binoculars → Monocular → Range Finder → Infrared Range Finder.

Interestingly, unlike in Battlefield games, you can’t tag your enemies using a sniper scope or just by pressing a button; you do need those recon items.

Support XP actions

There are actually a lot of things that you can do to get Support XP, and it’s not all about just building stuff. Here’s the list:

  • Drop a Supply Crate at a FOB
  • Deliver/drop Supply Pallets at a FOB
  • Teammates purchase/use supplies from your crate
  • Hit an unfinished structure with a Hammer
  • Hit the yellow critical-build marker
  • Construct FOB defenses/structures
  • Kill with a Shotgun
  • Kill with an LMG
  • Kill with an RPG or other launcher
  • Destroy an enemy vehicle with a launcher
  • Destroy enemy defenses with Support explosives
  • Kill/destroy vehicles with Mortars
  • Kill/destroy vehicles with an Anti-Air emplacement
  • Repair friendly vehicles
  • Kill with C4, AT Mine, Claymore or IED
  • Use SPH-2 artillery/L52 cannon for combat

Everything you do related to helping your team counts towards Support level. That includes delivering supplies, building, repairing, and even using artillery and anti-air encampments.

Dexerto independently summarizes the non-combat loop as: build FOB structures, drop supply pallets, and repair vehicles.

Manual vehicle refueling with the Fuel Can is similar to repairing, so that also counts.

Driver XP Actions

You get Driver XP mostly for taking teammates from the HQ (spawn base) to the controlled zone and dropping them off. There are various bonuses provided like the one where you get extra XP if everyone survives you being behind the wheel.

  • Transport a teammate from HQ into the Control Zone
  • Transport multiple teammates
  • Operate Driver-tagged ground vehicles
  • Drive the team's Spawn Vehicle forward
  • Teammates spawn from your deployed Spawn Vehicle
  • Get kills with Driver-tagged mounted weapons/cannons
  • Get Driver combat assists
  • Deliver supply crates by Ural/ground vehicle
  • A transported passenger later gets kills

Any vehicle counts: Bobcat, Dune Buggy, Flakpanzer Gepard, Humvees, Kodiaks, L2A6, M113 APC Spawn Vehicle, Ural and Ural Defender variants.

Driving the Spawn Vehicle into the fight and leaving it there will give you XP for every teammate that spawns on it.

Pilot XP Actions

Pilot is similar to Driver, just faster and riskier. Flying actually requires skill and can be dangerous because you might kill yourself and the teammates you’re transporting if you crash. This is partially negated by the parachute - any player who has it can just jump off and you don’t need to land. And landing is the most difficult thing to do compared to taking off and actually flying, in my opinion.

  • Transport teammates from HQ into the Control Zone
  • Fly/operate Pilot-tagged helicopters
  • Bring supplies toward the FOB/front by helicopter
  • Get Pilot combat assists
  • Kill enemies with helicopter-mounted weapons
  • Destroy vehicles with helicopter weapons
  • Deliver/drop logistics crates from a helicopter

The current helicopter roster is Pilot-tagged, including the MH-6, AH-6 variants, Havoc, and Z20 variants. The corresponding combat weapons will also give you Pilot XP: M134D Minigun, B-13 Rocket Pods, and 2A42 Autocannon.

Your transcript independently reports the particularly useful cross-progression method:

The reason I didn’t list specific XP numbers for any of these actions is that there have been two betas that I took part in, and they had different XP rewards, with the second beta purposefully having faster progression. Anyone who had complained about the progression being too fast and easy was reassured that on release, the actual progression will be much slower. And speaking of that…

WARDOGS Role Track Rewards

In this massive table, I’ve listed almost every reward that you get by reaching a certain level in each role. I would fully expect these rewards to be shuffled around at the game’s release and then after wipes. There will be regular wipes that reset the game’s economy, and I suspect that the role track rewards might change over time. This is the list that’s been put together based on the rewards from both betas:

100 levels in every role means that the total max WARDOG level is 600. Now, I can’t tell for sure if the role progression will reset during post-launch wipes like in Escape from Tarkov, but either way, I’ll make sure to update this table so you can look up how to unlock something specific, on what level, and what role.

Read our other WARDOGS guides:
