What is the Ruins of Lordaeron?

Ruins of Lordaeron is a level 16-22 Horde-oriented dungeon located above the Undercity. It is the first new addition to the dungeon landscape of the game that a Horde player will encounter, and it offers a fair share of secrets and solid non-linear exploration.

There are clear upsides and downsides to this, of course. If you want to immerse yourself in the game and do something that is at least partially different from constant mob killing, you’ll enjoy the ruins, even if it takes a while to complete. If you’re only here to get the loot and XP, then getting lost in the maze is going to be quite annoying, especially when you realize that you still don’t know where to go despite replaying the dungeon several times.

It’s also quite challenging compared to some other lower-level dungeons added by Forever devs. Secret encounters absolutely feel like they’re here to test your knowledge and mechanical skill, so veterans will probably enjoy these a lot, especially considering how rewarding completing the whole dungeon is.

Ruins of Lordaeron Walkthrough

Unlike many dungeons, Ruins of Lordaeron is a non-linear experience, and your party is free to roam wherever you like, stumbling upon boss fights as you go. It is a very deliberate design choice to ensure that you get to explore and personally witness what’s left of the once great kingdom.

There are six bosses in the area, which can be done in any order. In terms of difficulty, Witherfang and Bjork are the least threatening ones, while the rest can become somewhat of a problem depending on your party composition.

In terms of gameplay, Ruins of Lordaeron is an area that tests you in a lot of different aspects. It is recommended to come in bearing some reliable stuns to interrupt powerful abilities, some good heals to recover from heavy direct attacks, and decent options for dealing with hordes of enemies.

Ruins of Lordaeron Bosses

Witherfang

Spiders are scary, but Witherfang is among the least scary ones, actually. The boss patrols a large area around the King’s Alley and is always followed by a bunch of Broodlings, so it’s only a matter of time before you meet them intentionally or they sneak up on you first.

Mechanics

All that Witherfang really does is poison your tank. Aside from that, it’s a basic autoattack enemy with a few extra limbs.

Strategy

Being an unimpressive combatant, Witherfang compensates for it by bringing her two spider mob bodyguards to the fight. These are easy to deal with, as long as you focus them first. After that, just heal your tank and cleanse poison from time to time, and you’ll be just fine.

Potential loot: Witherbite Bracers, Atrophic Girdle, Segmented Spider Leg.

The Baron

The Baron resides in the southeast part of the dungeon. You’ll spot him right away, as he’s quite a prominent figure.

Mechanics

The Baron is a big boy who uses big boy Cleave to make melee characters suffer as if they don’t suffer enough in other boss fights. He finds fighting tanks rather boring, so he’ll try to Knockback your vanguard to get to those pesky little healers and damage dealers.

Strategy

Try to make sure that your melee heroes don’t make it easy for The Baron to Cleave half the party with every swing — your healers won’t be able to fix the situation. Stay behind his back or attack from range.

Knockback can deal some nasty damage and poses several potential problems: it enables The Baron to switch targets, it can toss you into a mob group, and it can even kill your tank due to high burst damage. The best strategy here is to make sure the boss never gets to use it at all by keeping him stunned.

Potential loot: Leftover Abomination Skin, Abomination Bones, Meathook Slicer.

Viktor the Vile

Viktor the Vile is a semi-secret boss that can only be found by activating the campfire in a building located in the southwest part of the dungeon. Prepare for a tough fight — there’s a good reason why they teach young Azerothians to never touch cursed stuff in godforsaken ruins.

Mechanics

Before you decide to activate the chimney, prepare for a long-winded combat encounter. You will have to clear five waves of skeleton mobs before Viktor deigns to face you in combat directly, using the same poison ability as Witherfang as well as some heavy swings to deal most of the damage.

Strategy

The whole fight is essentially a strain on your healers, since they’re the ones who will have to avoid multiple skeletons while trying to heal the right targets, all while managing their rapidly depleting mana. Help them out by keeping the hordes in check and ensuring your backline isn’t constantly threatened by loose mobs.

Some players recommend deliberately keeping the last mob in the last wave alive so that you can restore your mana and health before the boss fight, but I personally haven’t tried it, so do it at your own risk.

Potential loot: Bloodied Chestwraps, Vilewalkers, Vileblood Scimitar.

The Abandoned

Similar to Viktor, The Abandoned likes to hide behind a cursed object. That said, he is nowhere near as patient and will manifest himself soon after you walk near the statue in the southwest part of the dungeon.

Mechanics

Once you’ve triggered the encounter, you’ll have to dispose of three waves of trash mobs before the boss decides to join the party. Unfortunately for you, he has multiple party tricks that he’s willing to show even if everyone else asks him not to. Get ready to deal with Frost Nova, Drain Life, and Frost Armor.

Strategy

The Abandoned punishes melee characters by slowing their attacks. He also has decent AoE damage and survivability thanks to Frost Nova and Drain Life. The easiest way to counteract all of that is to use stuns to interrupt his casts and rely on ranged damage dealers to get the job done.

Potential Loot: Rotmender's Leggings, Grip of Fear, Scepter of the Abandoned.

Bjork

You can find Bjork in the northwest part of the ruins doing the usual ghoul stuff.

Mechanics

Bjork is kind of a joke. A boss who only has a short-duration Anti-Magic Shield aside from basic attacks. That said, devs decided to balance Bjork by ensuring these attacks hit quite hard, so don’t become overconfident.

Strategy

You tank, and then you spank. You know, the usual.

Potential Loot: Tuskwrap Belt, Bonerust Leggings, Corpse Chopper.

Rath’mael

Rath’mael is The Boss of the dungeon, which is why he’s located right in the middle of it. He is towering over the place, looking all important, and you’ll have to run around a bit to actually get to him.

Mechanics

Rath’mael has a constant AoE damage effect around him that cannot really be avoided by melee characters, so you’ll just have to clench your teeth and rely on healers. Aside from that, he only has one ability — a powerful Flamestrike that deals serious damage and simply cannot be ignored.

Strategy

The best way to fight Rath’mael is just stunning him when he tries to cast his Flamestrike. Running away from it is not as reliable, and it prolongs the fight, which only enables him to cast more Flamestrikes. Heal your melee heroes, keep interrupting his spellcasting, and you will win eventually.

Potential Loot: Rotmender's Treads, Mirror of Rath'mael, Coldspire Staff.

F.A.Q.

How long does Ruins of Lordaeron take?

The dungeon is expansive, and boss fights can often result in wipes due to small mistakes, so expect something around 50 minutes.

At what level should I do Ruins of Lordaeron?

The dungeon’s recommended levels are 16-22, but some of the fights are quite demanding. The less experienced you are as a player, the higher your level should be to compensate for it.

What is the best boss order for Ruins of Lordaeron?

You should certainly start with Witherfang and Bjork, since they aren’t much of a threat. The rest, however, can pose different challenges depending on your party, with Viktor the Vile being the most dangerous encounter for the unprepared.

Who is the final boss of Ruins of Lordaeron?

The correct answer is Rath’mael, but some secret encounters might feel more like the actual final boss of the dungeon. Viktor the Vile arguably fits this role better.
