How to Prepare for WoW Midnight Patch 12.1 and Season 2

Patch 12.1 and Midnight Season 2 are close together, but they are not the same update. Patch 12.1 introduces most of the new playable content first, while Season 2 begins one week later with its new Mythic+, PvP, Delve, and gearing progression.
That gives you two separate preparation windows. Some tasks should be completed before Patch 12.1 so you can start the new campaign and zone without delays. Others are tied to the end of Season 1 and must be finished before the next season officially begins.
Here are the main things to work on:
- Complete the Patch 12.0.7 story quests
- Unlock every Omnium Folio row
- Finish Season 1 raid rewards
- Claim Mythic+ seasonal rewards
- Earn PvP rewards
- Complete Delve rewards and level Valer
- Spend Season 1 currencies
- Finish limited events and achievements
- Prepare your characters for Season 2
- Sort your bags, quest log, and add-ons
You do not need to complete everything here. Collectors should prioritize rewards that will become unavailable, while progression-focused players can spend more time preparing their main character and preferred alts.
Patch 12.1 and Season 2 Are Different Deadlines
Patch 12.1 brings most of the new playable content. Season 2 follows one week afterward and activates the next seasonal progression cycle.
Here is the basic difference:
|
Update |
What It Introduces |
What You Should Do Before It |
|
Patch 12.1: Curse of Ula’tek |
Coiled Isle, new campaign chapters, Venomous Abyss raid, Altar of Fangs dungeon, Delves, world bosses, and outdoor activities |
Finish prerequisite story quests, prepare add-ons, create bag space, and organize your characters |
|
Midnight Season 2 |
New Mythic+ rotation, PvP season, Delve journey, seasonal rewards, higher item levels, new crests, and Great Vault progression |
Finish Season 1 achievements, ratings, currencies, catalyst upgrades, and limited rewards |
Blizzard has confirmed the one-week separation, but it has not announced the exact Patch 12.1 launch date yet. Because of that, I would work through limited Season 1 rewards now instead of relying on an estimated date. If you want to learn more about the 12.1, checkout this WoWhead article.
Complete the Patch 12.0.7 Story Quests
The first thing I recommend doing is finishing the story quests added in Patch 12.0.7.
The questline begins with Hagar’s Invitation, which you can pick up from Awenna in Silvermoon City. It introduces more of the Amani storyline and acts as the first chapter of the Patch 12.1 campaign.
You will still be able to complete these quests after Patch 12.1 arrives. However, leaving them unfinished means you may have to work through older chapters before reaching the Coiled Isle and its new activities.
Finishing the setup now lets you start the new campaign without that interruption.
Unlock Every Omnium Folio Row
Omnium Folio progression is another task worth completing before Patch 12.1.
Its quests unlock additional rows of passive damage and healing bonuses. These effects are not expected to switch off when Season 1 ends. They continue through the expansion and apply across your Warband after you complete the required quests on one character.
The individual bonuses may not feel enormous, but there is no reason to leave permanent character power unclaimed. They can help with your final Season 1 goals and give you a small advantage when you begin the next raid, Delves, and Mythic+ rotation.
Complete each weekly Folio quest as it becomes available. You can also leave several quests and finish them together later, though I would not carry them all the way into Patch 12.1 unless necessary.
Finish Season 1 Raid Rewards
Midnight Season 1 contains three main raids:
Each raid has its own Ahead of the Curve and Cutting Edge Feats of Strength tied to the final encounter. These achievements become unavailable when Season 1 ends.
The seasonal housing trophies are also time-sensitive. Each final boss awards different Argent, Gleaming, and Aureate trophy versions depending on the difficulty completed. Even Raid Finder and Normal players can collect the Argent versions, so these rewards are not limited to high-end raiders.
|
Raid Goal |
Requirement |
|
Defeat the final boss on Heroic difficulty before Season 1 ends |
|
|
Cutting Edge (1) |
Defeat the final boss on Mythic difficulty before Season 1 ends |
|
Argent Trophy (2) |
Defeat the final boss on Raid Finder or Normal |
|
Gleaming Trophy (3) |
Defeat the final boss on Heroic |
|
Aureate Trophy (4) |
Defeat the final boss on Mythic |
The Ashes of Belo’ren mount from Mythic Midnight Falls is not listed among the removed Season 1 rewards. I would therefore prioritize achievements and trophies that Blizzard has specifically marked as seasonal before spending the rest of your available time farming a reward that remains accessible.
You should also continue clearing Sporefall if you are collecting the Luminous Spore Glider. Four Delicious Spore Snacks are required, and the weekly acquisition limit means you cannot finish the mount in one evening.

Claim Mythic+ Seasonal Rewards
Mythic+ has one of the longest lists of Season 1 rewards. Your preferred stopping point will depend on your current score and how much time you have left.
|
Mythic+ Rating |
Season 1 Reward |
|
1,500 |
“the Umbral” title |
|
2,000 |
Calamitous Carrion mount |
|
2,500 |
Keystone Hero achievement and access toward the Gleaming Sunmote |
|
3,000 |
Convalescent Carrion mount |
|
3,400 |
“the Umbral Contender” title and a Timelost Saddle |
|
Top 1% |
Umbral Ashes mount |
|
Top 0.1% |
“the Umbral Hero” title |
The top-percentile thresholds continue moving until the season ends. Do not stop directly on the current cutoff and assume your position is safe. Leave yourself some room if you are pushing for Umbral Champion or Umbral Hero.
Dungeon teleports are another permanent reward worth chasing. Timing an individual Season 1 dungeon at Mythic Level 10 or higher unlocks a teleport to that dungeon.
I would prioritize the four Midnight dungeons currently in the rotation:
They may be absent from Season 2, so this is your current opportunity to earn their teleports. Returning dungeons can eventually appear in another rotation, but there is no guarantee when that will happen.
The Spectral Hawkstrider from Windrunner Spire and Lucent Hawkstrider from Magisters’ Terrace are not being removed. However, farming them becomes far less convenient when their dungeons leave the Mythic+ pool because you lose access to endlessly repeatable low keys.
Earn PvP Rewards Before Season 2
PvP cosmetics are among the least forgiving seasonal rewards. Most elite appearances, titles, weapon effects, and mounts cannot be earned after the season ends.
Important Season 1 goals include:
- Vicious Snaplizard: Win rated PvP matches while at 1,000 rating or higher
- Elite Armor Set: Earn the required rating milestones up to Rival I
- Galaxy Weapon Illusion: Reach Rival II at 1,950 rating
- Prestigious Cloak: Reach Duelist at 2,100 rating
- Galactic Gladiator’s Tabard: Reach Elite at 2,300 rating
- Galactic Gladiator’s Goredrake: Win 50 3v3 games while at 2,300 rating or higher
There are also seasonal Solo Shuffle, Battleground Blitz, healer, and top-ladder titles. These should only take priority when you are already close to their requirements. Starting a top-0.1% push in the final stretch is probably not a pleasant use of your remaining time unless high-rated PvP is already your usual activity.
The Vicious Snaplizard may become available through a Vicious Saddle later. Even so, completing your current progress bar saves you from spending a future saddle on it.

Complete Delve Rewards and Level Valer
Your Season 1 Delve journey will be replaced when Season 2 begins. Check its reward track in the Adventure Guide and claim anything you still want from its vendors.
The three major Nulleaus rewards are also seasonal:
|
Achievement |
Requirement |
Reward |
|
Defeat Nulleaus in his lair |
Nullaeus Domaneye cosmetic |
|
|
Defeat Nulleaus on Tier ?? |
“the Ominous” title |
|
|
Defeat Nulleaus solo on Tier ?? |
Arcanovoid Construct mount |
The solo mount should be your highest priority here. Blizzard’s Season 1 reward list states that these achievements must be completed before the next Delve season begins.
You can also level Valer to 60 before Season 2. Her level carries practical value into the next Delve season and should make your early runs more forgiving. The first Delve completed each day provides a larger experience gain for her, so spreading your runs across several days is more efficient than farming everything at once.
Do not spend too much time upgrading Season 1 curios. They are expected to reset and be replaced with new Season 2 options.
Spend Season 1 Currencies and Use Gear Upgrades
Several Season 1 currencies will reset or lose their current use when the new season begins.
Check your currency tab for:
- Dawncrests
- Restored Coffer Keys
- Coffer Key Shards
- Dawnlight Manaflux
- Undercoins
- Other Season 1-specific tokens
Use these currencies for gear upgrades or vendor rewards while they still provide value. Saving Season 1 crests for Season 2 will not help because Season 2 introduces a different crest family.
Undercoin vendor rewards should receive special attention. Many items may remain obtainable later, but they are expected to move to Voidlight Marl vendors. Spending your Undercoins now avoids losing one currency and then paying for the same reward with another.
Catalyst charges also reset. Any remaining Season 1 equipment may become free to convert after Season 2 begins, but Season 1 gear will no longer be upgradeable.
That creates an important transmog deadline. Upgrade Hero-track pieces to 6/6 before the season ends if you need the associated Mythic tier appearance. Converting the item later will not help when its upgrade path has already been disabled.
Finish Limited Events and Miscellaneous Rewards

A few easy-to-miss rewards are not tied directly to raids, Mythic+, PvP, or Delves.
Decor Duels
Decor Duels will close when Curse of Ula’tek arrives. Blizzard has doubled Illusionary Coin rewards during its final surge, making this the best remaining period to purchase its mount, toys, weapons, and other cosmetics.
Housing decor from the activity will remain available for Voidlight Marl afterward. That does not necessarily make waiting worthwhile, since you would be trading an expiring activity currency for a new-season currency that may have more useful purchases.
Goal! Achievement
Visit Richmond near Thalassian University, equip the faction Tabard of Participation, and score three goals with the Kickable Practice Ball.
Completing the achievement awards:
The activity takes only a few minutes, so there is little reason to skip it. You must unlock the rewards through gameplay before duplicates become available from other vendors.
Turbulent Timeways
The Master of the Turbulent Timeways V achievement requires you to obtain the Mastery of Timeways buff during four separate weeks.
You earn the buff by completing four Timewalking dungeons on one character during a qualifying week. Check your achievement progress now. This objective cannot be rushed after you miss too many weekly opportunities.
Timewalking vendors also offer mounts, ensembles, toys, pets, reputation tokens, and dragonriding customizations. Some expansion-specific vendors may not return for several months.
Prepare Your Characters for Season 2
After your limited rewards are handled, you can begin practical Season 2 preparation.
Reach Hero-Track Gear
You do not need maximum Season 1 item level. Season 2 gear will replace even strong current equipment fairly quickly.
I recommend aiming for a full Hero-track set on characters you intend to play early in Season 2. That should be enough to begin Bountiful Delves, Nightmare Prey hunts, and lower Mythic+ keys without farming the lowest gearing tiers first.
Good late-season Hero gear sources include:
- Turbulent Timeways weekly quests
- Current world bosses
- Patch 12.0.7 zone rares
- Field Accolade vendors
- Higher-level Delves and Mythic+
Past that point, your time is usually better spent on seasonal rewards unless you genuinely enjoy pushing your item level.
Review the Season 2 Dungeon Pool
Season 2 introduces a different Mythic+ rotation. Run the returning dungeons on regular Mythic difficulty or study their boss mechanics before keystones become active.
The expected pool includes Midnight dungeons such as Den of Narak, Murder Row, the Blinding Veil, and the Void Scar Arena, alongside returning instances including King’s Rest, Ruby Life Pools, and Temple of Sethraliss. The new Altar of Fangs dungeon is also part of the Season 2 pool.
Temple of Sethraliss receives mechanical changes in Patch 12.1. Several old Mythic achievements, including Snake Eater, Snake Eyes, and Good Night, Sweet Prince, are being retired due to those reworks. Finish them before the patch if you collect discontinued achievements.
Prepare Professions and Consumables
Season 2 introduces the Spark of Tides, which will be used for the next generation of crafted equipment.
Decide which character will craft each armor, weapon, or profession item. You do not need every profession on your main, but an organized group of alts can reduce crafting-order fees throughout the rest of Midnight.
No broad replacement of current combat consumables has been announced for Patch 12.1. That makes the end of Season 1 a good period to buy:
- Flasks
- Combat potions
- Healing potions
- Weapon oils and enhancement items
- Preferred food buffs
Demand normally rises when a raid and Mythic+ season begin. Buying a few stacks before everyone starts gearing saves gold and keeps you from returning to the Auction House between runs.
Sort Your Bags, Quest Log, and Add-ons
The final preparation step does not award a mount, but it will make Patch 12.1 less annoying.
Start with your bags and bank. Sell outdated gear, move valuable materials into storage, and use any tokens that are about to expire.
Then review your quest log. Finish Patch 12.0.7 campaign quests and abandon old daily or weekly quests you no longer plan to complete. This makes the new campaign quests easier to identify when the update launches.
Finally, update your add-ons and remove anything you stopped using. Patch 12.1 may require several add-on updates, especially for combat, raid, dungeon, and UI tools. It is better to deal with that before your first group is waiting at the entrance to Altar of Fangs.

F.A.Q.
When does WoW Midnight Season 2 start?
Blizzard has confirmed that Midnight Season 2 starts one week after Patch 12.1: Curse of Ula’tek. An exact release date has not yet been officially announced.
Is Patch 12.1 the same as Midnight Season 2?
No. Patch 12.1 introduces the Coiled Isle, campaign chapters, Venomous Abyss raid, Altar of Fangs dungeon, Delves, and outdoor activities. Season 2 begins one week later with the new Mythic+, PvP, Delve, and gearing progression.
What should I do first before Season 2?
Start with anything that becomes unobtainable: seasonal raid achievements and trophies, Mythic+ rating rewards, PvP cosmetics, Nulleaus Delve rewards, Decor Duels items, and limited achievements.
Will Season 1 currencies carry into Season 2?
Most seasonal currencies will reset or lose their current function. Spend Season 1 crests, Undercoins, Coffer Keys, and similar resources before the season ends.
Is it worth gearing alts before Season 2?
Yes, but you do not need maximum Season 1 gear. A Hero-track set should provide a strong enough starting point for early Season 2 Delves, Prey hunts, and Mythic+ dungeons.
Which rewards are easiest to miss?
The seasonal raid housing trophies, Nulleaus solo mount, Galaxy weapon illusion, Mythic+ teleports, Decor Duels rewards, and the Goal! achievement are all easy to overlook.
