Best Cars for Drifting in Forza Horizon 6

The world owes it to Japan and its iconic figure, Kunimitsu Takahashi, who created the drifting techniques in the 70s, and Keiichi Tsuchiya, aka the Drift King, for the creation and popularization of drifting. So, it’s only fitting that the best entry in the Forza Horizon series to focus on this racing activity is the one set in Japan.

I have looked over multiple sources online and compiled a list of the best Forza Horizon 6 drift cars that I believe everyone should try out. Personally, I don’t stick to just one. I make a build, drive it for a while, and then find some other project car. These five cars below are loved by the community and are commonly referred to as the best suited for drifting.

Formula Drift #151 Toyota GR Supra

The Formula Drift #151 Toyota GR Supra is the safest overall drift pick because it checks every box. 

Formula Drift (Formula D, FD) is North America’s largest professional drifting championship series, and the cars accepted for this championship are practically hand-picked.

The car is based on Fredric Aasbo’s 2020 Toyota GR Supra, but this is not a lightly tuned street car. Papadakis Racing rebuilt it into a full drift machine, pushing the 3.0-liter inline-six from 382 hp to around 1,030 hp. The build uses a huge turbo setup, upgraded fueling, forged engine parts, a reworked valvetrain, and many other competition-focused upgrades.

What it means is - this GR Supra is a drift-ready car right out of the box. You don’t need to make any changes. If you do want to make your own build, I would suggest just starting with a regular Supra from the same year.

Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT Apex

The Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT Apex is the best style pick on this list. I’ve already mentioned this icon in my best cars article as the best car for drifting, but let me explain why here.

The Trueno is light, rear-wheel drive, and easy to control, which is exactly why it became so famous in touge and drift culture. Its 1.6-liter 4A-GE engine only makes 128 hp in stock form, but the car’s low weight and balanced chassis make it feel much sharper than the numbers suggest. It is also tied closely to Keiichi Tsuchiya, the “Drift King,” and later became even more famous through Initial D where it was driven by Takumi Fujiwara.

I’m not going to drop any tunes here; there’s a bunch of those made for this car, and all of them are great. So, pick this car and go try it out on the Hakone Nanamagari Touge, for example. It’s a run that features 12 consecutive hairpins. Or try out the Haruna/Akina touge, created by the community.

Nissan Silvia K’s 1989

The 1989 Nissan Silvia K’s is the best beginner drift car from the final five. It has the classic front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, a light body, and enough turbocharged power to slide without feeling too wild. That makes it easier to recommend than the heavier or more extreme S1 drift cars.

This S13 Silvia uses a 1.8-liter CA18DET turbocharged inline-four with around 172 hp. The car’s lightweight chassis and multilink rear suspension give it the kind of balance that made the Silvia platform legendary among drift fans.

I couldn’t ignore this car, because its actually one of the starting cars, and everybody can get it easily right in the beginning. It’s also very easy to tune for drifting, because it has upgrades with the perfect stats for drifting. You got the 2.6 I6-TT engine swap that gives you that perfect Power/Torque ratio. You can choose between the stock Twin Turbo or Single Turbo aspiration and a wide body kit, which doesn’t really matter for drifting. At the end, the full build will cost you around 120k CR, which is not an insane amount, if you ask me.

Toyota Chaser GT Twin Turbo

The Toyota Chaser is the best budget sleeper pick. It costs less than the other highlighted cars, but still gives you that iconic JDM drift platform with some of the best community tunes out there.

So, the 1991 Chaser GT Twin Turbo uses Toyota’s 1JZ-GTE, a 2.5-liter twin-turbo inline-six with 276 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. It also has rear-wheel drive, independent suspension, and a limited-slip differential, which makes it much more than a simple sedan.

For FH6 drifting, you can absolutely tune it to have 1000 horsepower, especially if you put the 3.0L I6-TT engine, throw in some race cams and valves for the camshaft. Get the drift suspension with the right springs and dampers. Then get the 6-speed transmission and upgrade the driveline. While I'm not going to list a full list of things to tune, I bet you get the idea.

Mazda RX-7 Type R 1992

The 1992 Mazda RX-7 Type R is the best rotary drift car in the top five. It is one of the most recognizable Japanese sports cars ever made. The FD RX-7 is small, low, light, and built around a very unique engine setup.

Its 1.3-liter 13B-REW rotary engine uses sequential twin turbos and makes 261 hp in stock form. That power delivery, combined with the RX-7’s low weight and sharp chassis, gives it a very different feel from the Toyota and Nissan picks. I know and love this car from the NFS: Underground 1 and 2, where I loved using it for just about everything.

Anyway, it’s an amazing car. You do not need a 1000hp on it for a drift tune, just slap some good brakes, the right tires, keep the stock turbo, and pick the best-suited engine. An 800hp build is enough.

Drifting is about personal preference, so don’t listen to anyone who says that you have to choose that specific car or you can’t put that upgrade. As I said before, these are drift-ready cars that are tuned perfectly for this kind of racing. Fun fact - about 3 months ago, people on Reddit were worrying whether or not Formula D would come back for FH6, since drifting is not exactly big in this series. Turned out, all of those worries have been for naught, since Drifting culture is huge in Japan.

 

 

How to Tune Your Car For Drifting in Forza Horizon 6

Lastly, I’d like to leave you with some tips for making a good drifting build/tune on any car. If you like drifting and want to try it out for yourself, it’s actually pretty easy to make a build that you can use to practice with.

Start simple, then adjust the tune after a few test runs. Do not change everything at once, or you will not know what fixed the car.

For RWD drift cars, a locked rear differential makes the car easier to control because both rear wheels spin together. For AWD Drift Zone builds, use a rear-biased split, around 70 percent rear and 30 percent front.

When you’re playing on a gamepad, going to automatic shifting is fine. In that case, all you control is the acceleration, steering, and the handbrake. Obviously, it's much easier to do on a racing setup that includes a wheel, e-brake, and a gear shifter.
