Rogue Guide for WoW Forever

The best thing in WoW Forever is that it doesn’t change the core class identity, but changes it just enough to make it feel fresh. Rogue is no exception. This Rogue guide for WoW Forever explains all changes to Rogue, rotations, races, leveling, gear, talent builds, and so on. WoW Forever Rogue Changes

WoW Forever Rogue Class Infographic

Just like Paladin, Priest, Warrior, Shaman, and other classes my colleagues and I already covered, Rogue has kept what makes the class stand out without giving it a talent for every occasion as WoW does in Retail. Gameplay for Rogue is still based on Combos, Finishers, Stealth, and Poisons. Even though Rogue is considered to be way stronger in PvP than PvE, the developers brought some QoL changes to make it less stressful to play. Assassination and Subtlety Rogues received the biggest changes, and Combat Rogue remains pretty much the same, as we can all agree it was pretty well designed from the ground up. Possibly the biggest change most of you Rogue players coming from Classic will notice is the constant Energy regeneration. It doesn’t regenerate in big chunks as it did in original WoW. Combo Points are also way more forgiving, allowing you to switch between targets and not lose them, so now you’re not forced to fight only one enemy at a time, and when the situation changes, you can attack another enemy and not lose your DPS as long as you don’t start gaining your Combo Points on the new enemy. Pretty balanced. Otherwise it’d turn an already powerful PvP class into an absolute deity. These changes keep the main tendency of classes feeling more convenient and less clunky to play. The intention is pretty clear: the devs don’t want us to play like that one gif of a sweaty dude mashing the keyboard aggressively. The most important WoW Forever Rogue changes are:

  • Poisons have more charges: You won’t have to reapply them nearly as often
  • Poisons stack with temporary weapon enchants: Now you can use them alongside Sharpening Stones and Weightstones
  • Poison damage scales with Attack Power: This way poison stays relevant way longer and more powerful
  • Feint has doubled threat reduction: Allows you to push for more damage and still get away scot-free
  • Sap no longer breaks Stealth: Now Rogue’s crowd control is way less clumsy to set up
  • Distract reduces enemy Stealth detection: Useful for sneaking past dangerous mobs and obviously big in PvP
  • Expose Armor is stronger: Its armor reduction now matches roughly five stacks of Sunder Armor at the same level
  • Rogues can use one-handed Axes: Somewhat minor change imo, but now you have more options from the weapon pool

As for talents, we still have 11, 21, and 31 point milestones. Forever adds another major 16-point talent. Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40, which should be pretty useful for Rogues who want one build for raids and another for PvP. As I repeated myself 10 times at this point, the specs themselves became more pronounced and have clearer distinctions between each other. Assassination is all about daggers, Poisons, and trying to keep Finisher buffs for as long as possible. Combat works with direct weapon damage, auto attacks, and burst windows. Subtlety gets more from Bleed, Stealth moves, and using Rupture to lower the cost of next attacks.

Rogue Pros and Cons in WoW Forever

Rogue's biggest upside is also its biggest downside for some: single-target damage. This doesn’t change with the WoW Forever release, as the team behind it explicitly said that downsides of the class are also what makes this class unique and stand out. I rock with this philosophy. If you’ve never played Rogues before and feel like this might be a dealbreaker, know that developers straight up describe the class as having the potential for the highest single-target melee damage in the game. Another tradeoff is that Rogues don’t have any raid buffs that get them invited regardless of performance. You’re also a melee DPS, which for some is a big downside, but you have many options to get away in one piece. Your utility is second to none when it comes to control and interrupts, and your ability to survive situations that would kill less slippery melee classes.

Pros

Cons

Extremely high single-target damage

No tank or healer spec

Stealth and crowd control utility

Almost no AoE damage

Three different melee DPS playstyles

Energy management can be hard in the beginning

Kick, one of the best interrupts in the game

Relies heavily on melee uptime

Poisons now work with temporary weapon enchants

Poison-immune enemies make Assassination spec borderline useless

Great defensive utility like Evasion and Vanish

Bleed-immune enemies make Subtlety suffer as much as Assassination suffers from poison immunity

Can use many different weapon types

Lacks raid utility

One of the strongest PvP classes with all specs being very viable

Positioning is important for several key abilities

Rogues are quite interesting to play cause it’s a class that becomes stronger with your skill, along with talents becoming stronger. When you know the encounter and learn it, you are able to deal more damage and control the enemy better. In a way, it’s a push-and-pull playstyle where you react to opponents' attacks and skills, then use yours, then react again. In short, Rogue is not a class you play when you just wanna press buttons. You need to understand what you’re doing, but it’s very rewarding to play this class. At the same time, Vanish, Evasion, Sprint, Blind, Gouge, Sap, and Feint are all there to let you fix your own mistakes. Rogue is quite squishy, but the whole point is making sure that you just don’t get hit.

How to Play Rogue in WoW Forever

Every Rogue spec uses the same resource system. You spend Energy on attacks that generate Combo Points, then spend those points on Finishers. More Combo Points make the Finisher stronger or increase its duration. Despite that mechanical similarity, Rogue’s specs play nothing alike. Here’s how the three Rogue specs differ:

Specialization

Role

General Playstyle

Assassination

Melee DPS

Daggers, Poisons, Mutilate, Slice and Dice, Venom

Combat

Melee DPS

Weapon damage reliance, auto attacks, burst damage

Subtlety

Melee DPS

Stealth attacks, Rupture, Hemorrhage

Subtlety feels like the most classical cloak and dagger from D&D. Combat is more like a duelist. Assassination is pretty much in the name. Choose your specialization according to your RP preference, or pick the most meta spec. IIRC, the strongest raid Rogue back in Classic was Combat Rogue and Subtlety for PvP, but in WoW Forever this can change drastically. Even though it’s based on Classic, it’s more like a modern remake of that era.

How to Play Assassination Rogue

WoW Forever Assassin Rogue Spec Gameplay

Assassination is the poison spec, which means DoT damage. Your new signature builder is Mutilate, a 21-point talent that requires two daggers and strikes with both weapons. It generates two Combo Points and deals extra damage when the enemy is poisoned, so Assassination has a strong incentive to keep poison effects applied at all times. The other major addition is Venom, the new 31-point Finisher. Instead of dealing immediate damage, Venom buffs you, increasing Poison damage by 30% and your chance to apply Poisons by 10%. Its duration scales with the number of Combo Points spent.

Assassination Talents and Mechanics

How to Use It

Mutilate

Main Combo Point builder. Use it against poisoned enemies for higher damage

Poisons

Keep them applied at all times because most talents profit from them

Slice and Dice

Maintain it to increase melee attack speed

Venom

Keep the buff active to increase Poison damage and proc chance

Eviscerate/Rupture

Secondary options for spending Combo Points

Kick

Leaving enough Energy on this talent is important when there’s a big spell coming that you can interrupt

Assassination’s Finisher priorities are all about keeping Slice and Dice and Venom active. Mutilate is the best Combo points builder for that. Seal Fate can accumulate these points faster with the help of critical strikes. Out of the three Rogue specs, this one is the easiest to understand and master. Maintain two buffs, stab, keep your Poisons applied, and don’t forget to dump spare Combo Points for direct damage. As mentioned before, the biggest downside of the Assassination spec is enemies resistant to poison.

How to Play Combat Rogue

WoW Forever Combat Rogue Spec Gameplay

The most popular spec back when grass was greener. The least changed spec out of the three. The tree does get a few important improvements. The first is Flawless Execution, the new 16-point milestone talent, which reduces Eviscerate’s Energy cost by 10. Second is Hack and Slash, which combines the old weapon specialization talents into one talent and supports Daggers, Swords, Maces, Fist Weapons, and the newly added Axes. Different weapon types get different bonuses, but you no longer need to commit to a separate branch of the talent tree just because a great Axe dropped.

Combat Talents and Mechanics

How to Use It

Sinister Strike

Default Combo Point builder for most spec setups

Backstab

Alternative builder for dagger builds

Slice and Dice

Your main Finisher and one of the highest priorities in your rotation

Eviscerate

A Finisher that’s used after Slice and Dice has been spent

Blade Flurry

Use when fighting two targets or during burst windows

Adrenaline Rush

Save for periods where you can stay on the target and afford spending the extra Energy

Kick

Leaving enough Energy on this talent is important when there’s a big spell coming that you can interrupt

Combat spec also gets better at Backstab builds with talents like Aggression and Puncturing Wounds. So Sinister Strike isn’t necessarily the only way to build a competitive Combat Rogue anymore. In a typical PvE fight, your main concern is keeping Slice and Dice active and spending extra Combo Points efficiently while using Blade Flurry and Adrenaline Rush when a damage window comes up. Combat still has the best cleave option among Rogue specs with Blade Flurry, but don’t get your hopes up. It’s not a very big achievement since Rogues are just that bad with AoE damage.

How to Play Subtlety Rogue

WoW Forever Subtlety Rogue Spec Gameplay

Subtlety gets the biggest identity change because the studio clearly wanted it to be something more than “that Rogue tree people pick for PvP.” The spec now has a decent PvE cycle with Hemorrhage and Rupture, while not losing all the Stealth tomfoolery that makes Subtlety fun. Hemorrhage now increases the damage your Rupture deals to the target by 15%. Then the new 31-point talent Thousand Cuts makes each Rupture tick reduce the Energy cost of your next Hemorrhage or Backstab by 3, stacking up to five times. To put it bluntly, you proc the Bleed, the Bleed makes your builders cheaper, and those builders generate the points you need for your next Finisher.

Subtlety Talents and Mechanics

How to Use It

Stealth Opener

Start fights with Ambush or another stealth option

Hemorrhage

Keep this effect active as long as possible to increase Rupture’s damage

Rupture

Core Finisher and the trigger for Thousand Cuts

Thousand Cuts

Use the Energy discounts it generates on Hemorrhage or Backstab

Backstab

Strong builder when you actually can damage enemies from behind, pause

Cutthroat

Gives Backstab a chance to proc Ambush outside Stealth

Subtlety gets Cutthroat, which lets Backstab occasionally make your next Ambush usable without Stealth, which is a huge bump in DPS. You still need the correct weapon and positioning for Ambush, so it doesn’t completely remove the ability’s restrictions, but it gives dagger builds some pretty fun lottery.

Best Rogue Race in WoW Forever

WoW Forever Race Selection for Rogue

Rogue has one completely new race option in Forever: Skyborne, and both Horde and Alliance Skyborne can play the class. Strangely enough, I don’t think there is a certain race that is gonna be much better than others for Rogues, as there are arguments to be made for each of them. Below are all races Rogues can play in WoW Forever and why they’re good for the class:

Race

Faction

Useful Rogue Traits

Human

Alliance

Ruthless crit bonus, Perception

Dwarf

Alliance

Stoneform, physical survivability

Night Elf

Alliance

Elune’s Light crit window, improved Stealth

Gnome

Alliance

Eureka!, larger Energy pool, Escape Artist

Orc

Horde

Blood Fury, stun resistance, Axe synergy

Undead

Horde

Will of the Forsaken, Touch of the Grave

Troll

Horde

Berserking, Beast damage

Skyborne

Either

Haste, mobility, Elemental damage

Gnome is mildly interesting because Expansive Mind increases maximum Energy and Eureka! can reduce Energy costs temporarily, but Rogues aren’t very resource hungry if you play them right. Humans get passive crit. Night Elf has a large crit window, and Skyborne gets passive Haste. Horde has equally strong arguments for Orc and Troll depending on how much you value Blood Fury or Berserking.

Rogue Stat Priority in WoW Forever (WIP)

Since there’s still no access to level 60 Priest, it’s hard to talk about stat priority with full certainty. I can’t test endgame raid gearing in the current beta, but I know a thing or two about Rogues to make educated guesses. I’ll create a Stat Priority list when the full version releases, but for now I can safely say which stats are the most important for Priest in WoW Forever:

Stat

Why Rogue Needs It

Agility

Attack Power, Crit, Dodge

Hit

Prevents attacks from missing

Attack Power

Directly increases physical and Poison damage

Critical Strike

More damage and talent interactions like Seal Fate

Strength

Adds melee Attack Power

Weapon Skill

Affects weapon performance, though its role has been rebalanced

Agility, Hit, Attack Power, and Crit are the PvE stats you’ll care the most about. One important change is that Weapon Expertise no longer gives weapon skill. Instead, it reduces the enemy’s chance to Dodge or Parry your attacks. Weapon Skill itself is still present as a separate gearing consideration.

Best Rogue Builds in WoW Forever (WIP)

The best Priest builds in WoW Forever are open for debate now. Though full talent trees are already datamined, the level 30 beta cap means that it’s impossible to test the level 60 builds yet. For now, I can guess that the best Rogue builds in WoW Forever are:

Expect Combat to be the easiest one to optimize right at launch day because so much of its Classic PvE core remains intact. Assassination and Subtlety have more new systems that need actual raid testing before there’s any point claiming one exact build is the best. I just hope that Assassination’s rebalancing will make it more viable, though you can’t make all specs strong. It would be unfair to other classes. Then again, if everyone’s OP, no one is.

Rogue Leveling Guide in WoW Forever

If I were leveling Rogue as my first toon, Combat would be my default recommendation. It works perfectly even during early stages, doesn’t rely heavily on talents hidden deep in the talent tree, works with a large range of weapons, and its damage isn’t built around waiting for late-game abilities to finally make the spec function. Some would argue that Combat doesn’t really feel like Rogue, and I partially agree with that, but at the same time I gotta give credit where credit’s due. Rogue leveling itself is pretty straightforward:

  1. Use Stealth to avoid enemies you don’t need to kill
  2. Start from Stealth when possible
  3. Build Combo points with Sinister Strike or any other main builder if you choose a different spec
  4. Keep Slice and Dice active for enemies that can survive longer
  5. Use Eviscerate to finish shorter fights
  6. Use Evasion when you fight something that can kill you quickly
  7. Use Gouge or Blind to create space
  8. Vanish if a pull goes awry

Rogue isn’t the fastest class for killing big groups because your AoE is wack. The upside is that Stealth lets you skip half the annoying trash mobs between you and the quest objective. You’re slower when forced to kill everything, but faster when the game lets you choose what actually deserves to die. First Aid is borderline mandatory while leveling. You don’t have good self-healing, but Gouge or Blind gives you enough time to use a bandage even during combat. Campsite buffs also help a lot during the 1-60 journey, especially early when Rogue feels weaker between major weapon upgrades.

Rogue Best-in-Slot Gear in WoW Forever (WIP)

The section about Rogue’s BiS gear in WoW Forever will be fully developed when I get to level 60 in the full release of the game. I’ve seen people showing BiS gear for level 30 Rogues, which is the current beta cap, but I don’t think there’s much point in writing about it when beta is over, and the full game is just around the corner. Itemization has been reworked for old content, new dungeons were added, and there are hundreds of new profession recipes, which is why I can’t just list old Classic Rogue Best-in-Slot gear either.

Best Rogue Rotations in WoW Forever

Rogue isn’t that hard to play mechanically, but it requires good knowledge of the game, so if you want to learn attacks that raid bosses do or understand PvP rotations of other classes, Rogue is gonna be a little difficult in the beginning. Rogue rotations are mostly about maintaining the right Finisher buffs while not wasting Energy or Combo points for naught.

Assassination Rogue Rotation

Assassination is mostly a maintenance game. You want Slice and Dice keeping your melee attacks fast while Venom boosts your Poison output. Unlike many other specs, Assassination has pretty much a normal rotation and not a priority. Here’s the Assassination Rogue rotation:

  1. Apply Poisons before combat
  2. Start from Stealth every time there’s an opportunity
  3. Use Mutilate to generate Combo Points
  4. Maintain Slice and Dice
  5. Maintain Venom with enough Combo Points so that it doesn’t end the very moment you apply it
  6. Spend excess Combo Points on Eviscerate or Rupture when both buffs are already applied
  7. Keep enough Energy available for Kick when an interrupt is needed

Don’t use Mutilate on a target with no Poison effect, as you’ll waste your energy and a button. The ability explicitly deals extra damage to poisoned targets. It’s a common rookie mistake, so don’t feel bad if that happens. Just learn the rotation, and you’re gonna be fine.

Combat Rogue Rotation

Combat is the easiest Rogue spec to understand and at the same time one of the strongest. Most of your damage comes from weapon attacks, keeping Slice and Dice up, and using your cooldown windows properly. Your Combat Rogue rotation is:

  1. Build Combo Points with Sinister Strike or Backstab depending on your build
  2. Maintain Slice and Dice
  3. Use Expose Armor if your group assigns that job to you
  4. Spend excess points on Eviscerate
  5. Use Blade Flurry when you can hit two targets or during a burst window
  6. Use Adrenaline Rush when you can maintain uninterrupted uptime
  7. Keep Energy ready for Kick against dangerous casts

Flawless Execution makes Eviscerate cheaper, so Combat should have more room to fit direct-damage Finishers between Slice and Dice refreshes than before.

Subtlety Rogue Rotation

Subtlety can be difficult for beginners, but it’s an unmatched toolbox for PvP. Playing Subtlety Rogue can feel like you’re controlling a train that anxiously wants to go off the rails. If this comparison doesn’t make sense to you, play this spec and then read it again. You need Slice and Dice, you want Rupture ticking, and Hemorrhage needs to be active to improve the Bleed. Subtlety is too complex to be fit into a straightforward rotation, so it’s more of a Subtlety Rogue skill priority:

  1. Open from Stealth
  2. Apply Hemorrhage so your Rupture deals increased damage
  3. Build Combo Points with Hemorrhage or Backstab
  4. Maintain Slice and Dice
  5. Maintain Rupture on targets that don’t die immediately
  6. Spend Thousand Cuts discounts on Hemorrhage or Backstab
  7. Use Eviscerate when a target won’t live long enough for another Rupture
  8. Use Vanish and Stealth talents when they create a worthwhile opener or proc

Don’t refresh Rupture simply because you hit five Combo Points again. If the old one still has plenty of ticks left, replacing it early wastes damage and the Thousand Cuts value you would have gained from those ticks.

Best Rogue Professions in WoW Forever

My default Rogue recommendation would be Leatherworking + Skinning. You wear Leather, Skinning naturally supplies a lot of the materials you need, and Forever adds a huge amount of new profession gear that could keep Leatherworking useful well beyond leveling. There are two other combinations I’d also consider:

  • Engineering: An obvious choice for PvP/utility profession because Rogue already loves having more gadgets and ways to control fights. Just note that it will add more buttons to press, and if you already play Subtlety, be ready to take a break after every other Arena fight
  • Herbalism + Alchemy: Great if you want consumables and self-sufficiency, and Stealth makes gathering herbs in dangerous areas much easier.

You can also start with Skinning + Leatherworking, craft the important gear you want, and later replace Skinning with Engineering at max level. Also, do not ignore First Aid. Rogues have excellent crowd control but basically no normal healing. Gouge or Blind into a bandage is one of the most Rogue solutions to a problem imaginable.

Best Rogue Consumables in WoW Forever (WIP)

There isn’t enough endgame information to make a relevant Rogue consumables list yet. Forever adds hundreds of new profession recipes, so copy-pasting Classic consumables would miss a lot of new options. If we are talking generally, the consumable stat buffs are pretty obvious: Attack Power, Agility, Crit, weapon enhancements, healing consumables, and Energy recovery should all be relevant depending on your build. Thistle Tea is especially notable because extra Energy has always been powerful for Rogue, and the smoother Energy regeneration in Forever changes how you want to time it. Food also gives useful stat bonuses while leveling, and some campsite profession items can give effects such as Attack Power or broad stat increases. I’ll save the exact consumables for when level 60 recipes are actually known instead of padding this section with old Classic items.

F.A.Q.

What is the best Rogue spec in WoW Forever?

There isn’t a proven best spec at level 60 yet. Combat is currently the safest known PvE option because its core gameplay was already strong in Classic, while Assassination and Subtlety have received much larger changes that still need endgame testing.

What is the best Rogue spec for leveling in WoW Forever?

Combat is the safest leveling recommendation. It gets useful talents early, works with many weapon types, and doesn’t depend on deep talents to establish its main gameplay loop.

Can Skyborne play Rogue in WoW Forever?

Yes. Both Horde Windshaper Skyborne and Alliance High Order Skyborne can become Rogues. Skyborne are the only completely new Rogue race option in Forever.

Do Poisons work with Sharpening Stones in WoW Forever?

Yes. Rogue Poisons can now coexist with temporary weapon enchantments such as Sharpening Stones and Weightstones instead of occupying the same exclusive weapon effect slot.

What is the best Rogue race in WoW Forever?

There’s no mandatory race right now. Gnome, Human, Night Elf, and Skyborne all have useful Alliance advantages, while Orc, Troll, and Undead each bring different Horde benefits. Final racial rankings need level 60 data.

What professions should Rogue use in WoW Forever?

Leatherworking + Skinning is my default recommendation for leveling and early gearing. Engineering is probably the better long-term choice for PvP and utility, while Herbalism + Alchemy is good for self-sufficient players.
