ESO Materials Types
Materials actually come in 4 different types:
- Crafting Materials - used to create equipable gear through professions.
- Furnishing Materials - used to create house decorations and furnishings.
- Style Materials - used to change the visual look of the gear. So, they’re not used for creating gear but to change what it looks like.
- Quality Improving Materials - used to upgrade the quality of gear.
Crafting materials come in an unrefined form, which then needs to be refined to get a material that can be used for crafting. Each material type has its own range of sources where you can get it from. Let’s look at each category of crafting materials to learn what kind of resources there can be and where to find them.
Crafting Materials
Crafting materials have several sub-categories, one per profession that uses materials:
- Blacksmithing crafting materials
- Leather and hide clothing crafting materials
- Fibre clothing crafting materials
- Woodworking crafting materials
- Jewelry crafting materials
Each of them has their own range of resources or mats that you can find in various places:
Material sub-category | Materials | Sources |
Blacksmithing | Ores & Ingots | Mining nodes |
Leather and hide clothing | Scraps & Hides | Animals, monsters |
Fibre clothing | Textiles | Outdoor nodes |
Woodworking |
|
Trees |
Jewelry |
|
Seams & Placers |
Even though some of these materials are obtained by interacting with various nodes, there are materials that take a bit more effort to find. BLOG20
Furnishing Materials
If you have a house, you must want to make some furniture and some cool items for it. This can be done through crafting. Furnishing is not a separate profession. In fact, the materials for this type of items are used by many professions:
Material Category | Profession | Source |
Resins | Alchemy | Reagent nodes |
Bast | Clothing | Fiber nodes |
Pelts | Provisioning | Animals & monsters |
Wood | Woodworking | Woodworking |
Runes | Enchanting | Runestone nodes |
Ochre | Jewelry Crafting | Jewelry crafting |
Regulus | Blacksmithing | Ore nodes |
Not all ore or wood materials are used for making furniture. Only certain types are. It’s best to research the recipe for the item you want to make to learn what materials you need to find to make it.
Style Materials
Style materials used to change the visual look of pieces of gear also come in two forms - unrefined and refined. Each material in this category has a specific style, which is a reference for what the new look will be. It’s important to note that your character must have the ability to craft in a certain style. Anyway, let’s have a look at the materials themselves, where to find them, and what style they belong to.
Style | Material | Source |
Ancient Elf | Palladium | Deconstructing Ancient Elf style equipment, refining raw ore |
Barbaric | Cassiterite | Deconstructing Barbaric style equipment, refining raw ore |
Daedric | Daedra Hearts | Found from Daedric creatures, reward containers |
Dwemer | Dwemer Frame | Deconstructing Dwemer style equipment, refining raw ore |
Primal | Ferrous Salts | Deconstructing Primal style equipment, refining raw ore |
We haven’t listed all possible styles and materials because not all of them are available in the base game. Some styles require a DLC or game subscription.
Quality Improving Materials
All materials, as well as items they’re used for have different rarities or levels of quality. There are five rarities in total:
- Normal
- Fine
- Superior
- Epic
- Legendary
And so, the improving materials are needed to go to the next rarity tier. Let’s look at our handy table:
Type | Material | Upgrade |
Tempers | Honing Stone | Fine |
Dwarven Oil | Superior | |
Grain Solvent | Epic | |
Tempering Alloy | Legendary
Resins | Pitch | Fine |
Turpen | Superior | |
Mastic | Epic | |
Rosin | Legendary | |
Tannins | Hemming | Fine |
Embroidery | Superior | |
Elegant Lining | Epic | |
Dreugh Wax | Legendary | |
Platings | Terne Plating | Fine |
Iridium Plating | Superior
Zircon Plating | Epic | |
Chromium Plating | Legendary |
Now, the sources for these materials are varied, but to make it easier to memorize what improving material corresponds to which skill line, we can make this list:
- Tempers - blacksmithing
- Resins - woodworking
- Tannins - clothing
- Platings - jewelry
How to Farm Materials
If we’re talking about material nodes, farming them can be done very effectively. It all comes down to a few factors. Farming materials is not only needed to make new items, it is actually also one of the best ways to make gold! In fact, if you gather enough mats and sell them, you can easily make around 200,000 gold per hour!
First of all, you should try an addon called “Harvest Map.” What it does is – whenever you find a material node out in the wilds, the addon will automatically mark it on your map. That way, you don’t have to memorize the specific location. Instead, you can just return the node the next day using the mark on your map. BLOG20
From there on out, you need to do two things:
- Find the best route that includes multiple nodes. You have to consider how many nodes there are, how close they are to each other, and how popular these nodes are. A perfect route is one that will allow you to minimize the downtime that you spend by running from one node to another.
- Then, you’ll need a special build that will allow you to run faster and get more mats from one node.
Once you have the build and the perfect location with the best set of nodes, you can start farming as much as you want.
ESO Best Materials Farming Location
Even though, there are ESO material farming spots all over Tamriel, inducing DLC locations, there are not that many actually good locations that meet all of our criteria. You might find your own locations, but for the purpose of this guide, we’ll use Craglorn.
Craglorn, found in northeastern Hammerfell between Bangkorai and Cyrodiil, offers a mix of solo and group adventures. Once reserved for veterans, it's now accessible to all players. Split into three regions, Craglorn features towns like Belkarth and Dragonstar. Keep an eye out for nirncrux ore, which is used in crafting unique gear and is found exclusively in this area. Craglorn is often considered one of the best ESO material farming locations for several reasons:
- The abundance of Nodes: Craglorn is rich in resource nodes for various crafting materials, including ores, plants, and wood. These nodes respawn relatively quickly, allowing for continuous farming.
- High Yield Nodes: The resource nodes in Craglorn often yield a higher quantity of materials compared to nodes in other zones, making it efficient for gathering large amounts of resources in a shorter time frame.
- Varied Materials: Craglorn offers a wide range of crafting materials, including those used for blacksmithing, woodworking, clothing, alchemy, and provisioning. This diversity allows players to gather materials for multiple crafting professions in one location.
- Group Farming Opportunities: Craglorn's challenging group content encourages players to team up, making it a social hub for cooperative play. Grouping up for resource farming can increase efficiency and make the process more enjoyable.
- Additional Rewards: While farming materials in Craglorn, players may also encounter treasure chests, world bosses, and other valuable rewards, providing additional incentives to explore the area.
All of this means that Craglorn is good enough for our needs.
The Best Materials Farming Build in ESO
You need a build that is designed to farm mats and loot various containers that might also contain materials.
Your main objectives for the good farming build are:
- Fast stealth mode movement
- Fast sprinting/walking speed
- Best passives for farming
There are several ways to increase the movement speed up to 200%. While regular sprinting does provide such an increase, you want to make your regular jogging speed to be close to 200%. On top of that, you need to be able to avoid getting into fights as much as possible, because that’s just a waste of time when you’re trying to farm. This means that you need something that gives you enough stealth to enable you sneak past enemies. BLOG20
Improving Walking Speed | Improving Sprinting Speed
Item/Set | Effect | Item/Set | Effect |
Jailbreaker set | 15% speed (Minor Expedition) | Sprint Medium Armor passive Athletics | 1 piece = 3%, 7 pieces = 21% |
Retreating Maneuver skill | 30% speed for 7 seconds (Major Expedition) | Coward’s Gear set | While sprinting, you gain 30% speed (Major Expedition) |
Ring of the Wild Hunt set | Movement speed buff of 15% in combat and 45% out of combat | Fiord’s Legacy set | While sprinting, you gain 15% speed (Unique buff) |
Steed Mundus Stone | 16% speed (with 7 Divine trait) | Swift Warrior Orc passive | While sprinting you gain 10% speed (unique buff) |
Steed’s Blessing Perk Champion Points | 20% speed
Swift Trait | 7% speed gold quality (6% purple, 5% blue)
Concealed Weapon skill | 25% movement speed while in stealth |
But what can you do about the standard movement speed penalty when you’re sneaking? There are two ways.
- Your character must be a Vampire – they have a passive called Dark Stalker, which ignores the movement speed penalty of Sneak. It also decreases the time it takes to start sneaking by 50%.
- Get the Night’s Silence set - while wearing all five items from the set it also removes the movement speed penalty of Sneak.
If you are a vampire, you can instead use parts of Vesture of Darloc Brae set which restores your Stamina when you’re crouching (when 5 items are equipped), and the Jailbreaker set that increases your movement speed by 15%.
Crucial Skills and Additional Items
Besides the items and set bonuses, it would be best to use specific skills that help you go into cloaking mode and give you extra speed.
Melee Skills | |
Shadowy Disguise | |
Rapid Maneuver | |
Concealed Weapon | |
Ranged Skills | |
Leeching Strikes | |
Resolving Vigor |
You can slot any other skills you want into free slots. Finally, if you’re at that point in the game where you can spend Champion points, you can make the build even more effective if you invest in certain passives from Warfare, Fitness, and Craft Trees. To allocate Champion Points for extra movement speed, prioritize investing points in the Craft tree, particularly in the "Steed’s Blessing" perk. This perk provides a significant bonus to movement speed, enhancing your mobility while farming.
Finally, there are some items that can give you more speed-increasing buffs:
- Longfin Pasty With Melon Sauce – cheap food that increases your health, magicka and, more importantly, stamina for 2 hours.
- The Steed Mundus Stone – provides a permanent buff that increases your run speed by 16% and health recovery by 389.
- Perfected Vestment of Olorime – This set creates a circle of blessings where you place it, granting allies in the area the Minor Expedition buff, increasing their movement speed.
Conclusion
Farming materials is a very lucrative thing to do, whether you’re a crafter or a trader. Not only can you make new and powerful items if you have the required materials, but you can also make good money by selling refined or unrefined materials. It all comes down to your ability to farm mats efficiently. That can be done provided that you’ve found a good place with lots of material nodes and a build that increases your movement speed and has good stealth perks.
If you have both, you just need to work out the fastest route from one node to another in a circle. When you manage that, too, you can start making some good money. Our guide has covered everything you need to make materials farming easy.
