WoW Forever Engineering Changes

Engineering has always been an outlier in WoW games.
Unlike most crafting professions, Engineering isn’t dedicated to creating great gear — it is much more about unique utility tools and consumables. However, previously these items were mostly tied to Engineers themselves, since they couldn’t be properly used by anyone who isn’t an Engineer. That led to a unique situation where Engineering had undeniably been a source of a variety of very valuable stuff, but most of it was locked behind heavy restrictions.
As with any other profession in WoW Forever, Engineering got a bunch of fun new recipes. However, the biggest change that Blizzard has introduced is the ability to give or sell a bunch of bombs and other gadgets to non-Engineer players, enabling them to use these to their fullest potential.
Since Engineering’s unmatched utility helps players solve almost every possible problem — from lack of CC or Taunt to direct AoE damage, every class in the game will find use for these tools. This affects the profession at every level, making it significantly more useful and profitable thanks to an increased buyer base.
Like all other professions, Engineering also provides unique utility when it comes to the Camping system. Reagent Bot allows players to purchase all sorts of reagents without having to get back to town. Its upgrade, Repair Bot, enables players to repair their gear at Camp. Finally, Anarchist’s Workbench gives your Engineer access to some high-end recipes.
Leveling Engineering in Forever
Engineering is not the easiest profession to level for several reasons.
First off, it’s going to require a lot of materials from other professions, which means that you’ll likely have to spend a lot of gold on purchasing them. Secondly, items that you craft are sometimes revealed to be small parts of a larger craft scheme, meaning that you’ll have to navigate it all to get where you actually need to be.
While some items might help you with leveling, you’ll have to be resourceful and creative to not waste your bombs and target dummies — and you can waste their potential quite easily by either using them incorrectly or forgetting to use them at all. Other professions can be way more straightforward in comparison — think of how Tailoring provides magic users with great leveling gear as well as means to get materials for it without investing in a gathering profession.
With all that said, the basic idea of profession leveling in Engineering is exactly the same as in other professions. You will craft items using recipes and materials, all while following the basic structure that incentivizes you to craft relevant items if you expect to get any progress:
- Orange recipes guarantee a skill up every time you craft them.
- Yellow recipes offer a decent chance of providing a skill point, which slowly decreases as you get closer to the green tier.
- Green recipes provide a low chance of getting a skill point, which gets even lower as you get closer to the grey tier.
- Gray recipes with no arrow indicators provide no skill points, no matter how many items you craft.
WoW Forever is a fresh new game, so it’s hard to provide a leveling guide that is truly 100% optimized — we simply don’t have enough data yet. That said, here’s a tried and tested route you can follow — the focus here is on minimizing the use of weird and rare materials.

Engineering Specializations in WoW Forever
In WoW Forever, you get to choose between two distinct specialization paths: Gnomish Engineering and Goblin Engineering. As soon as you get to Engineering 200 and character level 30, you are allowed to complete one of the two three-quest chains to unlock one or the other.
This already makes Engineering specializations a bit peculiar, but there’s more to it. Once you get the Membership Card, which enables you to learn the schematics for your chosen specialization, you will notice that there’s a 14-day Membership limit on it. Yes, you will have to regularly renew it by paying gold to keep access to said schematics.
So, what’s the difference between Gnomish Engineering and Goblin Engineering?
Gnomish Engineering
To put it simply, Gnomish Engineering is about crafting all sorts of utility tools fit for every possible scenario. That includes summoning pets, controlling your opponents, throwing nets, shrinking enemies, getting massive move speed boosts, and detecting invisible targets. There’s also one option to deal a massive chunk of damage to a selected target.

Goblin Engineering
Goblin Engineering is much more straightforward — it’s mostly about dealing damage with explosives and stunning enemies, really. However, there are some interesting outliers here, like tools for reviving allies, protecting them from damage, increasing move speed, or making yourself a bit better at Mining.

Making Gold with Engineering in Forever
For what it’s worth, Engineering looks like one of the best ways to make money in WoW Forever, as long as you have enough resources to operate with. It might be a bit more difficult to start your business from the ground up than with some other professions, but once you get it going, it’s likely going to be very lucrative.
The reason is very simple: you can create general-use tools that every single class in the game will benefit from. In fact, Engineering is the one profession that truly addresses the inherent struggles that come with class designs. Do you lack AoE or straight-up damage? Here’s a bunch of bombs to fix that. Need some CC? How about a tool for throwing nets? Lack mobility and protection? We have that as well!
The only thing you always have to remember is that a lot of your crafts require highly specific and expensive materials, so you’ll have to sit and calculate your potential profits before committing to anything. Still, once you figure it out, it should be quite easy to get rich.
So, what are the best ways to make money with Engineering?
I’d suggest starting with selling a bunch of useful consumable items — this is by far the simplest and most reliable route. It’s not just about bombs and utility tools I’ve mentioned earlier — you get to sell ammunition too, and it is valued among ranged weapon users for obvious reasons. Your profit margins here might not be super crazy, but the consistency is great. The only thing I’d worry about is competition — especially if everyone decides to become Engineers on your server.
Just like any other profession, you still can craft some cool gear, and there’s no reason not to sell it for profit. Goggles, scopes, belts, and all sorts of weird utility gadgets can prove to be invaluable to many players, so you’ll have a steady way to make cash. Just make sure to check which items are in demand.
Finally, as I always recommend, try to get your hands on some rare schematics so that you become one of the few players who can craft a specific thing. Of course, this strategy won’t be as good as time goes on and players get more and more access to these, but it can really help you make a fortune in the early stages of WoW Forever. Identify the gap and fill it with your rare offer to set yourself up for life.
Best Professions to Pair with Engineering
Since you only get two options for your primary professions, Mining is by far your best choice. Engineering might use a lot of weird materials from different professions, sure, but the vast majority of what you’ll use will still come from Mining, and being able to gather a huge percentage of what you need on your own is going to cut costs massively and increase your leveling speed by a lot.
If you already have an alt dedicated to gathering stuff and really don’t want to mine on your Engineer, you can consider Blacksmithing as a second option. If you are playing a class that wears armor, you can streamline your resource spending, since both Engineering and Blacksmithing use the same materials.
Best Race and Class to Learn Engineering in Forever
Finding the best race for Engineering isn’t difficult at all: currently, only Gnomes have a racial ability directly tied to it. Engineering Specialization significantly reduces the rate at which the devices you use fail or backfire.
It’s hard to say at the moment if this trait is great, okay, or underpowered — testing all sorts of Engineering devices in all sorts of scenarios will require players a bit more time. However, if you plan to heavily commit to Engineering tools, there aren’t many reasons not to pick Gnomes.
As for the classes, Engineering is quite unique, because it fits everybody almost equally, so it’s never really a wrong choice. If you are really into hyperoptimizing every single little thing in WoW Forever, you could argue that Hunters might benefit the most since they get to craft rifles, ammunition, and scopes as well as utility tools, but I’d say it’s not that important in the grand scheme of things.
Engineering Legacy Bonuses in WoW Forever
As it’s always the case with Forever’s Legacy system, basically all professions benefit from it equally, and Engineering is no exception. There are no specific talents that target specific professions, so you’ll only get general boosts.
That’s not to say that these aren’t impactful — some look very impressive on paper.
- Working Overtime increases your chance to gain a skill increase from any tradeskill.
- Dedicated Study increases your skill level in your lowest tradeskill by a small amount or provides random Elemental Essences if you have already reached 300 in all 5 skills.
- Performance Bonus grants a chance to receive 100% additional Merchant's Favor when turning in a supply crate to the Azeroth Commerce Authority or Durotar Supply and Logistics.
- Field Guide reduces the cooldown on adding Camp features.
- Reagent Economy makes it so your class abilities no longer require reagents purchasable from vendors, and your Tier 1 camping features cost no reagents to craft.
