AION 2 Gladiator Class Overview

I picked Gladiator to be my main because I played glad in the first AION. In this game, Gladiator is an off-tank, meaning your role is still tanking, although you can deal tons of damage. You can’t spec fully into DPS. And on top of that, as you deal damage, you build up Enmity (the game’s definition of aggro) through one of the passives, so naturally, you will want to do that in group content. By the way, it’s not recommended to have a Templar and a Glad in a party, because their buffs don’t stack. But that’s only valid for the true endgame content when things get serious.
Here's what to expect from the class:

Main weakness |
Never enough MP to keep the damage at the max at all times |
I picked Gladiator because this is the class with the cool big sword. I love the fighting style too - aggressive with lots of AoE and jumps or gap closers. But as much as I love it, if you want to be considered for an endgame game content group, you need to know how to tank and do it well, which involves investing in and using a block, which takes actual skill. Tanking also requires some other knowledge. I’ll explain everything you need in this guide.

Best AION 2 Gladiator PvE Build

There’s really only one way to play Gladiator in PvE, and that build revolves around making
Overhead Slam spammable and without cooldown. You won’t be able to do that until way later into the endgame, but even with cooldowns, the rotation doesn’t really change.
You have a buff called
Rage Burst that makes
Overhead Slam available for 10 seconds.
Overhead Slam's level 16 Specialty removes its cooldown, letting you spam it nonstop. Then your
Lunge Stance at level 20 gives you cooldown reduction when you crit, which in turn helps you use
Rage Burst more. The goal is to keep buffing and using the
Overhead Slam nonstop.
So, you’re going to be working towards getting these things done for your Glad:

Don't worry if you're nowhere near these levels yet. Gladiator works perfectly fine while leveling, and we'll go through the early setup separately.
Don’t worry, I will break down each skill, passive, and stigma separately. On top of that, even as you’re leveling up, Gladiator is still pretty fucking powerful even with the
Overhead Slam cooldowns.
One more thing: a skill reaching level 16 doesn't mean you can equip three Specialties. You still have two Specialty slots at that point. The third becomes available at level 20. So, you’re going to have to compromise.
If you're confused about how to get your skills past level 10, I've explained the entire system in my AION 2 Skill Progression Guide. It covers regular skill points, Daevanion bonuses, Arcana, Soul Bindings, and how to reach those important level 16 and 20 milestones.
Best Gladiator Skills and Specialties
Gladiator has the same number of abilities as any other class in the game, but you’re not going to be using all of them. In fact, not only will you not add all of them into your macro, you won’t even need to put them into your quick slot for manual access, because some of them are useless. Trust me on this: a good build specializes in dealing the maximum amount of damage, and that means mixing up the right skills and not using the ones that don’t do much.
Your most important choices come from picking the right Specialties on skills as you level them up. At first you’ll have 1-2 specialty slots, so make them count. Check out the table below where I listed the specialties that you must have on your skills.

HP absorption Specialty (Lv. 8) |
I also listed them in order of priority.
Overhead Slam
Overhead Slam is your most important skill in the game. It is responsible for 50% of your damage! It can only be used once one of 3 conditions is met:
- Target knocked down (unless it's a boss)
- Incapacitated Immunity Target (when a boss is stunned)
- When
Rage Burst is active
At level 8, take the Specialty that adds
Upward Strike as a chain attack. This gives you yet another attack to the combo right after
Overhead Slam itself. Very nice! Then at level 12, grab the Critical Hit on hit, which will add even more damage.
Getting this skill to level 20 is going to be an even bigger power spike compared to leveling it to 16. But it’s very hard, I admit.
Rending Blow
Rending Blow is a right-mouse button that deals more damage but spends MP. This is your second most-important skill in the game. Make sure to always level it up as much as you can.
It’s very important to get the Specialty that makes this skill mobile, meaning it allows it to be used while moving. That can be unlocked at level 8. You will always, always go for that one option first. For the second most important specialty, it’s best to get the one that gives you more damage when you hit fewer targets, which will make it more effective against bosses.
Keen Strike
Keen Strike is your left-click attack that generates mana. There was a debate whether or not you should stop using this in the endgame, but due to how the Critical Hit is capped at 50% in the game, it's best to keep using it, because you’re not going to get over 50% crits when you stop using
Keen Strike. And the +20% MP restored Specialty helps a lot during leveling. The other thing you’re going to want to get is Multi-Hit once you level it up to level 12.
Ruinous Blow
Ruinous Blow is a massive damage button with a longer cooldown. It also serves as a gap closer, so I’m using it in the same macro rotation as the other skills. The third perk is that this also gives you 20% increased damage, and that is massive! You’ll want to take +20% Skill Speed and Extra damage on hit for this one.
Gladiator Skill Leveling Priority
Now, you’re going to need a plan for what to level up and in which order. This is it; just follow this for the skills:
- Get
Rending Blow to level 8 for the mobile skill Specialty. - Get
Overhead Slam to level 8 for the
Upward Strike chain attack. - Upgrade
Keen Strike to improve MP recovery during leveling. - Bring
Overhead Slam and
Rending Blow to level 12 for their useful intermediate Specialties. - Prioritize
Overhead Slam level 16 to remove its cooldown. - Get
Rending Blow to level 16 for MP restoration on critical hits. - Work toward
Overhead Slam level 20 once your other major upgrades are covered. - Invest in
Ruinous Blow,
Sword Aura Rampage, mobility, and utility skills afterward.
To get additional skill levels, you're going to need Daevanion Boards, Arcana, and eventually bonuses from your gear. I recommend starting with my AION 2 Daevanion Board Guide, where I explain how the boards work, which nodes give you Active and Passive Skill levels, and how to spend your points without wasting them.
Best Gladiator Stigmas
Stigmas are also super important for your builds, especially because they give you cooldown reduction, damage buffs, and a block. You don’t need to unlock all of them, but it is absolutely imperative that you unlock the ones listed here. Including the
Focused Block.

Stigma |
What It Does (Level 1) |

![]() |
Rage Burst |
Deals damage to a target within 4m and inflicts Wounded for 10s, reducing the target's Attack by 10%. Increases the caster's PvE Damage Boost by 10% and PvP Damage Boost by 5% for 10s. Triggers [Overhead Slam] on the target for 10s on hit. Cooldown: 45s. |
-15s cooldown (Lv. 5). Upgrade first to use Rage Burst and Overhead Slam more frequently. |
![]() |
Lunge Stance |
Increases Combat Speed by 20% for 10s. Cooldown: 60s. |
50% chance to reduce all skill cooldowns by 1s on Critical Hit (Lv. 20). Your main long-term Stigma priority. |
![]() |
Zikel's Blessing |
Increases Attack by 20% and Accuracy by 100 for 10s. Cooldown: 120s. |
+50% Stagger Gauge Damage (Lv. 5); +10% PvE Damage Boost and +5% PvP Damage Boost (Lv. 10). Upgrade after the core Stigma milestones. |
![]() |
Focused Block |
Temporarily increases Block Damage Reduction by 100% and guarantees Parry. Restores MP and Stamina once on Parry. Sustained Skill. Cooldown: 20s. |
+1 consecutive use (Lv. 5). Allows two consecutive uses and helps trigger Experienced Counterstrike. |
Rage Burst
Rage Burst is what makes your entire damage rotation possible. Besides damaging and weakening the target, it allows you to repeatedly activate
Overhead Slam for 10 seconds. Once
Overhead Slam has its cooldown-removal Specialty, this becomes your primary damage window.
Upgrading
Rage Burst to level 5 reduces its cooldown by 15 seconds, making the ability available substantially more often. I would prioritize this upgrade early because it has a direct impact on how frequently you can use your strongest attacks.
Lunge Stance
Lunge Stance increases Combat Speed, which means when you spam your
Overhead Slam, you’re going to use it more in those 10 seconds when it's active. It’s a super great buff for all of your damage skills regardless. The way it works is it makes every attack animation faster, so you’ll spam more of them.
At level 20,
Lunge Stance gains a 50% chance to reduce all skill cooldowns by one second whenever you land a critical hit. Since Gladiator attacks frequently and can eventually guarantee critical hits on
Overhead Slam, the effect becomes extremely powerful.
Zikel's Blessing
Zikel's Blessing is your second buff. This one increases your Attack by 20% and Accuracy by 100 for 10 seconds. I recommend putting both buffs on the same button so it's easier to use them. For upgrades, or specialties, you’re going to want to grab the first 2. The first increases damage done to the stagger gauge, and the second one is another PvE damage boost.
Focused Block
Focused Block IS NOT TO BE IGNORED! Not only does it let you properly tank and absorb damage without the need to dodge and waste your stamina, but it also procs a passive called
Experienced Counterstrike. This is the best passive, and it is not to be neglected either. Getting
Focused Block to level 5 grants an additional use, making it considerably easier to manage during longer boss fights.
Best Gladiator Passive Skills
There’s a bunch of Passives, and you gotta know which ones are worth leveling up since Skills and Passives share the same pool of points you use on leveling them up.
Experienced Counterstrike is the most important of the bunch here. It's not just a personal damage boost; it's also one of the reasons a well-played Gladiator can be valuable to an entire dungeon party.

Utility |
Why Experienced Counterstrike is Important
Experienced Counterstrike seems to be a passive that not all Gladiators understand. First of all, it increases front damage, which is how you should be attacking the bosses - facing them. That alone makes it a number one passive for a tank. On top of that, it provides a damage boost to you AND your party!
A good Gladiator should regularly check whether
Experienced Counterstrike is on and if it isn’t, it's the right time to hit the block button again, which is your Stigma.
The other two offensive passives worth mentioning are
Murderous Burst and
Impact Hit.
Murderous Burst benefits from your high attack frequency, while
Impact Hit provides Double Chance, which can significantly increase damage when it activates. Their relative value will depend on your current stats and how developed your character is.
Blood Absorption is also worth having, especially when you're learning encounters or playing solo. However, I wouldn't prioritize maxing it over your main offensive passives.

Best Gladiator Rotation and Macros

Now we get to the part where we put those Skills and Stigmas into the combo-wombo. You don’t have to put the skills into the same quick slots as I did, as long as you have the same macro.
When you use your buffs, then the gap closer, then your macro, that makes it a combo.
So, in one skill chain you should have (in order from 0-3):
Ruinous Blow (gap closer + buff + insane damage)
Rage Burst buff
Rending Blow damage filler
Then your Macro would look like this:

So, this skill chain and
Overhead Slam are assigned to any other quick slot button. That is your macro. The important thing is that
Keen Strike stays outside the macro.
Here’s how you use it:
- Buff up with
Lunge Stance and
Zikel’s Blessing for a massive damage start - Use a gap closer like
Leaping Slam or
Rush Strike (can also use that to catch up to targets that move a lot) - Hold LMB+RMB to use macro and animation cancel to
Keen Strike so that you’re spending and restoring MP at the same time.
If you haven't used macros before, check out our AION 2 Macros Guide for a detailed explanation of how skill chains, macro rows, and execution priorities work.
Gladiator Leveling Guide
Leveling Gladiator can feel a little underwhelming compared to classes that deal enormous damage almost immediately. Although I didn’t feel it when playing the class myself. It might feel slow because your buffs have long cooldowns - 45 seconds, 1 minute, etc. Also, if you forgot to make the
Rending Blow mobile, my condolences.
As for leveling your character, just focus on the main story and don't spend too much time farming random mobs or upgrading gear you're going to replace anyway. I've covered the fastest route to level 45, including Ascension quests and which activities you can skip, in my AION 2 Leveling Guide.
You can still use the same macro even before you level up all the important skills and stigmas to level 16. Gladiator still deals tons of damage, and if you know the boss encounters, farming gear in Expeditions will still be easy. I’ve seen so many Gladiators who fail to dodge boss mechanics because they don’t seem to have the
Focused Block at all or they’re not using it. Meanwhile, I don’t even waste my time by using a gap closer to get back to the boss. As soon as the damage is absorbed, I just go back to spamming my macro.
Here's how I'd approach your progression:
|
Stage |
Main Priority |
What Changes |
|
First Milestone |
Rending Blow Lv. 8, Overhead Slam Lv. 8, Keen Strike MP recovery |
Unlock your first specialty on skills |
|
Second Milestone |
Overhead Slam Lv. 12, Rending Blow Lv. 12, core Stigmas |
Get that second specialty for skills and get them Stigmas! |
|
Near level 45 |
Finalize your macro |
Your combo-wombo is ready to use on poor bosses |
|
Early endgame |
Overhead Slam Lv. 16, Rending Blow Lv. 16, Rage Burst Lv. 5, Focused Block Lv. 5 |
Get the third specialty and make that Overhead Slam spammable! |
|
Deep endgame |
Lunge Stance Lv. 20, Overhead Slam Lv. 20 |
Massive damage spike! |
Do get that specialty that resets
Leaping Slam when your target is dead. This will allow you to jump between targets, which is super useful on a melee class. You’ll waste less time farming packs.
Best Gladiator Stats and Gear

Gladiator's damage depends on more than your weapon and the level of your main skills. Your secondary stats also have a major impact on how smoothly the class performs. In particular, you want bonuses that allow you to attack more frequently, trigger additional damage, and use your strongest abilities more often.
This is also where simply comparing Gear Score can be misleading. Two Gladiators with the same overall power can perform very differently depending on which stats and skill bonuses they've invested in.
Gladiator Stat Priority
|

|

Helps avoid missing against enemies with higher defensive stats |
For attributes, Wisdom and Illusion are particularly attractive because of their connections to Double Chance and Cooldown Reduction. Those are two of the stats Gladiator benefits from tremendously as its build develops.
Watch out for that Critical Hit bonus and how much you stack it!! There’s a 50% critical hit ceiling in the Global client. Under those conditions, additional Critical Hit beyond the relevant effective cap would be less useful than investing in other offensive stats. The exact amount required can vary with the target and game balance, so check your effective rate before committing to a specific numerical threshold.
Gladiator Weapon and Equipment Priorities
Gladiator uses a greatsword, and your weapon should be one of the first equipment pieces you prioritize upgrading. The additional damage matters for both farming and maintaining Enmity during boss fights.
I would approach equipment upgrades in roughly this order:
- Improve your weapon before spending heavily on minor armor upgrades.
- Look for bonuses that increase
Overhead Slam's skill level. - Prioritize Cooldown Reduction, Double Chance, and other useful offensive stats.
- Upgrade defensive equipment as needed to survive the PvE content you're currently farming.
- Refine secondary stat lines once you have equipment worth keeping.
Overhead Slam level bonuses are especially valuable because getting the skill to level 16, and eventually level 20, changes how your entire build works.
Arcana is an important source of these bonuses, particularly Parchment and Chalice cards that can level up
Overhead Slam. Equipment bonuses may also help bridge the gap to the next important skill level.
I would prioritize reaching those milestones over chasing a small amount of additional raw power. If one upgrade unlocks a major Specialty and another only improves your displayed Gear Score, the Specialty is often the more meaningful improvement.
For more explanation of progression and equipment upgrades, see our How to Farm Gear Score in AION 2 guide.
Gladiator PvP Tips
Gladiator is also a pretty good pick for Abyss PvP, where being tanky and having plenty of AoE and crowd control can make a big difference. If you haven't explored Reshanta yet, my AION 2 Abyss PvP Guide covers how to enter the Abyss, farm Abyss Points, get PvP gear, and participate in faction PvP.
The biggest adjustment from PvE is that you can't simply rely on your boss damage rotation. Players move unpredictably, can escape your crowd control, and may punish you heavily for committing to an attack at the wrong time.
For PvP, I would focus on these abilities:
| Icon |
Skill |
PvP purpose |
![]() |
Leaping Slam |
Close distance and initiate fights |
![]() |
Rush Strike |
Chase opponents or re-engage after dodging |
![]() |
Mocking Blade |
Create Knockdown opportunities and provide healing |
![]() |
Overhead Slam |
Punish targets after successful control effects |
![]() |
Ankle Slice |
Restrict enemy movement |
![]() |
Defiance |
Recover from crowd control |
![]() |
Focused Block |
Mitigate incoming attacks and trigger passive bonuses |
One of the most important habits is not spending both gap closers immediately. If your opponent still has an escape available, you might find yourself standing in the middle of nowhere while they're already preparing their next attack.
Instead, use your first approach to force a reaction and keep another movement option available whenever possible. Against melee classes, you can play more aggressively around your blocks and control effects. Against ranged enemies, closing the gap and maintaining pressure become much more important.
I would also recommend keeping your PvP setup separate from your dungeon build. The skills above are useful starting points, rather than a claim that the PvE build is fully optimized for PvP.
Gladiator Tips and Common Mistakes
Gladiator isn't particularly difficult to understand, but several small mistakes can make the class feel much weaker than it should. Most of them come down to building the wrong abilities, managing MP poorly, or failing to use the defensive tools that also contribute to your damage.
Here are the things I would pay the most attention to:
- Don't spread skill upgrades evenly.
Overhead Slam and
Rending Blow are considerably more important than most other abilities. - Don't remove
Keen Strike entirely. Keep it available on LMB for MP restoration alongside your RMB macro. - Don't neglect
Focused Block. It can trigger
Experienced Counterstrike and improve the damage of your whole party. - Don't attack bosses from behind by default. Gladiator benefits from frontal damage bonuses.
- Don't waste your
Overhead Slam window. Use
Rage Burst when you're actually able to attack your target. - Don't spam
Sword Aura Rampage automatically. It's situational, and using it can interrupt a stronger damage sequence. - Don't judge the class exclusively by early-level performance. Several major improvements are locked behind skill and Stigma levels.
One final piece of advice: practice boss encounters rather than just practicing your rotation against a stationary target. A training dummy is useful for checking your damage and MP sustain, but it doesn't teach you when to block, how to reposition, or how to preserve your buffs during real mechanics.
Oh, and one more thing about tanking: turn on the boss orientation indicator in Settings → Info Display → Combat. Gladiator gets extra damage when attacking from the front, so this makes positioning yourself correctly much easier. I've covered other useful options in my AION 2 Best Settings Guide, including graphics and performance settings that can help during busy dungeon fights.
F.A.Q.
Is Gladiator a tank or DPS in AION 2?
Gladiator is classified as a tank in group PvE, but its gameplay combines tanking with substantial melee damage. You generate Enmity through your main attacks and can deal competitive damage with a developed build, although dedicated DPS classes generally have a higher damage-focused ceiling under comparable conditions.
What is the best Gladiator skill in AION 2?
Overhead Slam is the most important damage skill for a PvE Gladiator. Its level 16 cooldown-removal Specialty works particularly well with Rage Burst, while level 20 allows you to combine the Upward Strike chain, cooldown removal, and guaranteed critical hits.
What are the best Stigmas for Gladiator?
For the PvE build covered here, the recommended Stigmas are Rage Burst, Lunge Stance, Zikel's Blessing, and Focused Block. Together, they provide improved damage, faster cooldown recovery, Overhead Slam activation windows, and defensive utility that also benefits your party.
Should Gladiator stop using Keen Strike at level 45?
No, I wouldn't recommend removing Keen Strike from your gameplay completely. Keep it on the left mouse button and use it alongside your right-click macro whenever you need additional MP restoration. As your Critical Hit and Rending Blow improve, you can rely on Keen Strike less frequently during burst windows.
What stats should Gladiator prioritize in AION 2?
Cooldown Reduction and Double Chance are especially valuable for Gladiator, followed by offensive stats such as Critical Hit, Critical Damage, and Attack. Your exact priorities depend on existing equipment, effective critical hit limits, and whether you're still trying to reach important skill-level milestones.
