  • Complexity - how long does it take you to make an item? Some crafting professions have a long chain of steps you go through to make something. The shorter the chain, the better. I mean, you’d be making more money in less time.
  • Time to profit - how long does it take to level up a profession until it starts being profitable?
  • Competition - if everyone does it, you won’t make much money off it.
  • Drop replacement - can you get the same value in items just by farming mobs?

There are a couple of more things to consider, of course. Things like whether a profession is actually fully and well implemented or not. How much effort does it take compared to alternatives? Is it risky? Do you have to do something in PvP zones for your profession? 

There are a lot of factors to consider, and it takes a lot of hours to learn all this stuff. But the best professions can already be identified by just a handful of key qualities.

Everyone needs more than one shirt for different skills, and those shirts also give you combat power. Even those who never touch artisan systems still need them. Arcane Engineering

Arcane Engineering produces books as the most profitable type of item. That’s why it is among the best professions to make gold in AoC. Books are easy to make, require minimal processing, and serve a massive caster population - mages, summoners, healers, etc. Entry costs are low, and even basic versions sell reliably.

Higher-rarity books outperform mob drops and can’t be easily replaced through mob farming. That exclusivity keeps the profession profitable longer than most crafting paths. But when everyone realizes how simple it is, the value of books will go down, making this profession obsolete. So, it all depends on when you do it and what server you’re on. Higher-rarity books are just better than those that you can get by killing rare and named mobs, so you can’t really replace that with mob farming.

Scribe

Scribe is the crafting profession that actually produces the final product. Like I said earlier, scrolls are always needed during early and mid progression, especially by players pushing levels or funneling resources. Demand spikes quickly, and the production loop is straightforward.

The problem is that it relies on mining, the price of gemstones, and things only get weirder from there. Plus, you also need alchemy to make the powders to get to the higher-level scrolls. Eventually, the scroll price could fall off because once everyone hits level 25, scrolls for experience aren’t really needed.

Herbalism

Herbalism deals with almost every production skill. Especially when you get into apprentice scrolls. You can make it work for cooking, making magic powder, and pretty much everything in between. The skill is fun.

There are a lot of not very high-demand items out there, too. You might have problems selling something like the Snowdrop powder for the arcane engineering. Other than that, you can’t go wrong with herbalism.

Weapon Smithing

Tools drive the real value here. Pickaxes, axes, and sickles sell consistently and give tangible advantages to gatherers. Those advantages justify ongoing purchases.

A lot of people are picking up weapon smithing, though. And they’re all trying to price each other out of the market. This makes it worthless for making weapons themselves.

Animal Husbandry

Animal Husbandry is a poor choice for mostly the same reasons as hunting. It gets pretty expensive to level up, and the demand can screw you, too.

AoC Artisan Skills That Probably Are Not Worth It

There’s a long list of professions in AoC that were left out of the two previous sections. Are they all really that bad? That depends on who you ask. Artisan skills may be better on some servers and worse on others. Even though we’re led to believe that there aren’t that many people playing the game, there are enough players to populate multiple servers and create different economies.

Leatherworking

Leatherworking mostly sucks. At least it lets you make bags that give you different extra slots for crafting resources, which is always nice for people who do gathering. The good part is - no one else wants to do it, so if you do end up picking up this artisan skill, at least you’ll be on the winning side once you get to the expensive side.

Because you can’t make anything super useful besides bags, Leatherworking isn’t all that alluring. Note that we’re not even talking about making leather armor for sale, because usually you can get better options just by farming mobs.

Weaving

Weaving can be pretty good if you look at it as a funnel into tailoring. From that perspective, the skill is good. But otherwise, you have to make bolts like in carpentry, which sucks. Someone still has to make the skivvies, which are artisan skill pants, so there’s that.

Stonemasonry

Stonemasonry benefits from low participation. Armor molds and niche outputs sell better than most processing goods due to reduced competition.

There’s nothing much to do with this profession besides cutting ruby for 10 copper. 

Carpentry

With carpentry, you can make more tools and also bows. Those are pretty good for turning a profit. They’re also not crazy to make.

The problem is leveling. A lot of players are complaining about how slow the leveling is. Just like weapon smithing. You have to make a lot of throwaway bows for experience and then get your money back. Some players might be looking to buy fishing rods, but most are doing herbalism and mining.

Metalworking

Lots of players are making ingots, so the prices get undercut so hard that by the time you get to even something valuable, you’ll lose more on processing. Besides, not many players are buying ingots. Unless you’re doing weapon smithing yourself, it could be worthwhile.

Lumber milling faces the same problem as metalworking. Everyone makes boards, and pricing collapses quickly.

Profit only appears when materials are sourced cheaply and used internally. Selling boards alone rarely feels rewarding.

Tanning

You have to go with Leatherworking and tanning at the same time; there’s no way around it. It may need fewer things to level up, but it doesn’t do much on its own.

Lumberjacking

Wood is always needed, but the return per action is lower compared to mining or hunting. Processing costs and market saturation limit upside. It works best as a supplement, not a focus.

Fishing
