How to Upgrade Gear in Patch 10.1
We would like to begin our Dragonflight gearing guide with the basics and must-know details. To start with, the newly-implemented gear upgrade system works in a simple and straightforward way. You will see a small text tip for any item that can be upgraded when you point to it. It shows an upgrade level and a progression step. To get access to the next step, you need to go through 3 or 4 item levels. Before you complete an upgrade, you can preview the final version of the item when interacting with any Item Upgrade NPC.
In the screenshot above, you can see the Champion upgrade level and 4 out of 8 steps completed. As for other upgrade levels, we have compiled the following table to make your life easier:
Gear Type | Item Level Range | Upgrade Limit |
Explorer | 376-398 | 8 |
Adventurer | 389-411 | 8 |
Veteran | 402-424 | 8 |
Champion | 415-437 | 8 |
Hero | 428-441 | 5 |
Even though the Hero upgrade level is extremely difficult to reach, it is still possible to do this. If you manage to get to this point, you will have practically the most powerful gear currently available in the game.
How to Gear Up Fast in Dragonflight 10.1
To ensure your gearing process is fast and efficient, you need to take the following actions:
- Discover Zaralek Cavern, complete local quests, and other activities you encounter inside of it;
- Keep farming reputation with the Loamm Niffen faction;
- Farm as many Flightstones as possible to use them in future gear upgrades. The first week’s cap is 2200 pieces;
- Farm Drake's Shadowflame Crest Fragment to upgrade your Season 2 gear up to level 424. The weekly cap is 150 fragments;
- Stock up with gold and reagents to recraft items from Season 1;
- To obtain your first Spark of Shadowflame you must complete the Power Unified quest and finish a weekly quest where you are to gain 1500 reputation. By combining x2 Splintered Spark of Shadowflame, you can create one spark every two weeks;
- Starting from May 7th, you can activate the Darkmoon Top Hat and WHEE! buffs at the Darkmoon Faire. These buffs do not stack yet each of them boosts your experience and reputation gain by 10% for an hour;
- At this point, it is time to find a friend or a guild member who is good at Enchanting to use their services in the future.
After that, you should concentrate on the following steps:
- All Mythic+ dungeons and raid modes become available;
- Keep farming Flightstones;
- Keep farming Drake's Shadowflame Crest Fragment, Wyrm's Shadowflame Crest Fragment, and Aspect's Shadowflame Crest Fragment. You get an increased weekly cap of 150 fragments on top of those you already have, making it 300 in total;
- Try to stay around 2000 RIO to purchase a token item of a heroic level (431-437). If you are looking for a PvP analog, try to earn the Challenger II rank;
- Keep farming dungeons and raids. Try to get as many Splintered Spark of Shadowflame as possible;
- Once you get your hands on a few items from dungeons and raids, you can upgrade them by using Flightstones. However, do this only if you consider them to be worthy.

How Discounted Upgrades Work
As we have already explained, the upgrading process works in a straightforward way. Answering another question of how to gear up in Dragonflight, you just need to collect a required number of Flightstones and Crests to increase a certain item’s level. Depending on what ilvl you are striving to achieve and what item slot is upgraded, the cost will be different.
For example, upgrading weapons is more expensive if compared to other equipment slots like chests or belts. However, you can get a discount if you already have an item of a certain level in that given slot. For instance, if you have 434 gloves, upgrading all other gloves up to this level will be cheaper. Keep in mind that PvP items do not activate this feature for PvE items.
The Flightstone discount reduces the amount of this currency needed by 60%. Besides, this feature is account-wide. Unlike with other equipment slots, you need to have two rings and trinkets of a particular ilvl to get access to this discount for these particular slots.
As for the Crest discount, you need to receive a gear piece of a certain item level for a chosen slot to make all future upgrades free for this particular slot up to this ilvl. However, this feature is NOT account-wide. Unlike with other equipment slots, you need to have two rings and trinkets of a particular ilvl to get access to this discount for these particular slots.
Despite having a discount system, you still need a lot of gold to buy the required materials. Farming it on your own is a tedious and time-consuming process. Instead, you can Buy WoW Gold with our company’s help. We will get it delivered to the chosen server in the shortest time possible.
How to Farm Flightstones
Practically any Season 2 activity grants you Flightstones. Therefore, obtaining this currency should not be a problem even for beginners. You can complete various Zaralek Cavern events, Mythic+ dungeons, or kill raid bosses. Everything mentioned and others reward you with Flighstones, as you will need tons of them. As usual, the harder the content, the richer rewards.
If you are a master of Enchanting, you can use Empowered Flightstones to create Titan Training Matrix V. This crafting reagent can be purchased from Dustmonger Topuiz in Loamm. Its cost is x150 Flightstones. Once you gather all the required materials, create Titan Training Matrix V to upgrade your gear up to ilvl 395.
To get as many Flightstones and Shadowflame Crests, you can use our Mythic Carry and WoW Raid Boost services. Our professional players will gladly finish a dungeon run of any difficulty or slay the toughest boss for you. We offer fair prices and guarantee the result.
How to Farm Shadowflame Crests
Being a rarer currency, obtaining Shadowflame Crests is a much more difficult process. As a rule, you get it from slaying raid bosses or finishing high-level Mythic+ dungeon runs. You can complete a variety of open-world activities but you will get a very limited amount of this currency from them.
To make things clearer, we would like to share a table containing all types of Shadowflame Crests and the sources you can get them from. We are going to start with the lowest-tier crafting reagent, which is also the easiest one to obtain.
Item Name | Source |
Whelpling's Shadowflame Crest | Raid bosses of LFR difficulty, Mythic+ dungeons below +6, World quests, treasures, and other activities in Zaralek Cavern, and Fragments from Spinsoa. |
Drake's Shadowflame Crest | Raid bosses of Normal difficulty, Mythic+ dungeons between +6 and +10, Weekly events in Zaralek Cavern, and Fragments from Spinsoa. |
Wyrm's Shadowflame Crest | Raid bosses of Heroic difficulty, Mythic+ dungeons between +11 and +15. |
Aspect's Shadowflame Crest | Raid bosses of Mythic difficulty, Mythic+ dungeons above +16. |
As you can see there are only a few sources you can get high-rank Shadowflame Crests from. Therefore, obtaining them can be a tough and time-consuming process. If you are looking for lower-rank Shadowflame Crests, namely Whelpling's Shadowflame Crest and Drake's Shadowflame Crest, you can get up to two each of them from Spinsoa located in Loamm. Each crest costs x15 Unearthed Fragrant Coin. The latter can drop from Clinking Dirt-Covered Pouch, which is possible to obtain from world quests and bonus objectives in Zaralek Cavern.
How to Obtain Enchanted Crests
If you are a master of Enchanting, you can create various Enchanted Crests. They are used when crafting or recrafting items to make them even stronger. The highest-tier Enchanted Crest can increase your item level up to 447. This is an amazing number for any player yet it requires much time and effort to achieve this result.
Here is a list of all Enchanted Crests currently available in the game:
- Enchanted Whelpling's Shadowflame Crest requires x1 Whelpling's Shadowflame Crest and can increase your item level up to 395-408;
- Enchanted Wyrm's Shadowflame Crest requires x2 Wyrm's Shadowflame Crest and can increase your item level up to 424-437;
- Enchanted Aspect's Shadowflame Crest requires x4 Aspect's Shadowflame Crest and can increase your item level up to 434-447.
To see how powerful these crests are, reach Renown 20 with Loamm Niffen and be rewarded with x1 Enchanted Wyrm's Shadowflame Crest.
How to Obtain Lower-Tier Shadowflame Crests
If, for some reason, you are looking for lower-tier Shadowflame Crests, you can get them from Vaskarn in Loamm. This NPC can be found at the following coordinates /way 14022 56.6 56
You can exchange higher-tier crests to get lower-tier ones:
- x1 Wyrm's Shadowflame Crest costs x1 Aspect's Shadowflame Crest;
- x1 Drake's Shadowflame Crest costs x1 Wyrm's Shadowflame Crest;
- x1 Whelpling's Shadowflame Crest costs x1 Drake's Shadowflame Crest.
Of course, a trade like this can hardly be called fair yet you can use this feature for your own purposes. For example, you can easily get your hands on Dragonflight catch-up gear used for alts.
