What is the Great Vault in WoW?

The Great Vault is World of Warcraft’s weekly reward system. It lets players choose one piece of gear based on their completed activities from the previous week. This is an extra loot mechanic, rewarding players for completing Raids, Mythic+ dungeons, and World Content.

Here’s how the Great Vault works in WoW:

  • Every week, it fills up with loot choices based on your completed activities.
  • You can unlock up to nine item choices, three per category.
  • You only get to pick one item, so more choices mean a better chance at something useful.

If you don’t like any of your options, you can take Algari Tokens of Merit instead. This currency can be exchanged for useful items like sockets, crafting materials, and more. The gear you get from this system scales with the difficulty of the activities you finish – higher challenges mean better rewards.

Great Vault Location

In The War Within, the Great Vault location has moved to Dornogal, the central hub of Khaz Algar. You can find it inside the Council’s Treasury building, located near the city's bank. The vault is marked on your map with a lock icon, making it easy to spot.

If you don’t want to travel all the way there, you can check your progress remotely. This is done by opening the Delves Tab in the Group Finder menu. You will still need to visit the Vault in Dornogal personally to claim your reward after the weekly reset.

Great Vault Reset Time

The Vault system follows a weekly reset schedule, meaning your progress resets, and you can claim a new reward once per week. The Great Vault reset time in WoW depends on your region:

  • North America, Latin America, and Oceanic servers – Resets every Tuesday at 15:00 UTC.
  • European servers – Resets every Wednesday at 04:00 UTC.

Make sure to complete your weekly objectives before the reset. This is how you can increase the number of available rewards before the next reward cycle. BLOG20

Great Vault Objectives Explained

This system offers an assortment of items to choose from whenever a weekly reset occurs. You can choose one item from up to nine possible rewards based on completed activities. Here’s how the Great Vault objectives work:

  1. Raids – Earn rewards by defeating bosses in Liberation of Undermine.
  2. Dungeons – Complete Mythic, Heroic, or Timewalking dungeons to add dungeon-based rewards.
  3. World – Finish Delves and World activities to unlock world-content loot.

Each category unlocks up to three reward slots. We highly recommend doing all the content possible to get access to all nine WoW Vault rewards each week. Tired of grinding yourself or simply don’t have enough time? SkyCoach can help you with Heroic Liberation of Undermine, the most challenging Delves, and the highest M+ Keys. Consider any content completed, as our PROs will take care of it in a jiffy.

Raid Objectives

Raid Objectives grants you reward slots for defeating bosses in the current raid tier. For The War Within Season 2, we’re dealing with Liberation of Undermine. The more bosses you take down, the more loot options you unlock. You can complete these objectives on any difficulty. Be prepared to obtain a reward depending on the most challenging boss you’ve managed to take down.

Here’s how raid progress translates into reward slots:

  • Defeat 2 raid bosses – Unlocks one raid loot option
  • Defeat 4 raid bosses – Unlocks two raid loot options
  • Defeat 6 raid bosses – Unlocks three raid loot options

If you complete content at different difficulty levels, each reward slot will reflect the highest difficulty you achieved for that specific objective. If you defeat a later boss without clearing earlier ones, your rewards will be drawn from that boss and any previous ones in the raid.

For example, if you clear 6 bosses but only defeat 5 of them on Heroic difficulty, your first two Vault rewards will offer Heroic-quality loot. However, the third will be Normal-quality since you didn’t defeat six Heroic bosses.

Dungeon Objectives

Dungeon Objectives unlock more loot options for finishing Heroic, Mythic, Timewalking, or Mythic+ dungeons. The system works similarly to the one we’ve just described above:

  • Complete 1 dungeon – Unlocks one dungeon loot option
  • Complete 4 dungeons – Unlocks two dungeon loot options
  • Complete 8 dungeons – Unlocks three dungeon loot options

Timewalking dungeons count as Heroic difficulty, while Mythic+ dungeons reward gear one key level higher than the highest key you finished. If you complete a mix of difficulties (e.g., 3 Mythic+ dungeons and 5 Heroic dungeons), the first slot will offer Mythic+ gear. Though, the remaining slots will provide Heroic-quality loot.

Dungeon rewards you earn with this system are higher item level than end-of-run Mythic+ chest drops. This makes it one of the best ways to get high-end gear without relying on pure RNG from dungeon runs. If you’re pushing keys or farming for upgrades, aim to complete at least 8 dungeons per week. This ensures you get the best selection of loot when the reset hits.

World Objectives

The Great Vault in The War Within now includes World Objectives, replacing the old PvP rewards system. These objectives allow players to earn extra loot by completing Delves and World activities:

  • Completing 2 World activities or Delves unlocks the first reward slot
  • Completing 4 World activities or Delves unlocks the second slot
  • Completing 8 World activities or Delves unlocks the third and final slot

Unlike previous expansions, world quests do not count toward this category. Instead, qualifying World activities include weekly events, special assignments, and larger world events. A few examples are The Theater Troupe in Isle of Dorn, Awakening the Machine in The Ringing Deeps, and Spreading the Light in Hallowfall.

Tier 1 Delves (which include standard world events) provide the lowest-quality gear, while higher-tier Delves significantly improve reward levels. However, Tier 9-11 Delves do not grant better loot than Tier 8. Therefore, running 12 Tier 8 Delves per week is the best way to increase your loot in this category.

Great Vault Rewards

Making your way towards all nine reward slots is your weekly goal to pursue. This is arguably the easiest way to get geared up at the start of Season 2 or any moment later. Your loot ilvls will also scale according to the difficulty of the activities finished. In this part of the guide, we explain how Great Vault rewards work in WoW:

  • Tier set pieces can drop in any category. You can still obtain tier set gear through dungeons and world content, even if you never step into a raid.
  • You can choose a currency reward instead. If none of the gear options work for your character, you can take Algari Token of Merit. This can be exchanged for useful items by talking to Ardgaz.

While there’s no specific WoW Great Vault loot table, the rewards you get are usually worth the effort. We highly recommend completing all the activities and unlocking all the slots to get geared up faster.

Great Vault Mythic+ Loot Item Level

To prove how vital it is to progress through this system, let’s look at what ilvl loot you can earn. Unlike the loot you get directly from dungeon completions, the gear obtained from this weekly system is of a higher item level.

M+ Level M+ Reward Great Vault Reward
Mythic Champion 1 (636) Champion 4 (645)
Mythic 2 Champion 2 (639) Hero 1 (649)
Mythic 3 Champion 2 (639) Hero 1 (649)
Mythic 4 Champion 3 (642) Hero 2 (652)
Mythic 5 Champion 4 (645) Hero 2 (652)
Mythic 6 Hero 1 (649) Hero 3 (655)
Mythic 7 Hero 1 (649) Hero 4 (658)
Mythic 8 Hero 2 (652) Hero 4 (658)
Mythic 9 Hero 2 (652) Hero 4 (658)
Mythic 10 Hero 3 (655) Myth 1 (662)
Mythic 11 Hero 3 (655) Myth 1 (662)
Mythic 12 Hero 3 (655) Myth 1 (662)

Aim to complete at least one high-key dungeon. This guarantees a high-level reward from the Vault. Running multiple Mythic+ dungeons (up to 8) increases your loot choices, giving you better chances at getting an upgrade. BLOG20

What is Algari Token of Merit Used for?

The Algari Token of Merit is a backup reward for players who don’t find a piece of loot they want. Instead of picking a gear piece, you can choose Merit Tokens. The number of Algari Tokens of Merit you receive depends on how many Vault slots you’ve unlocked:

  • 1 unlocked slot → 2 Tokens
  • 2 unlocked slots → 4 Tokens
  • 3 or more unlocked slots → 6 Tokens (maximum)

Once you’ve collected these tokens, you can exchange them at Ardgaz. This NPC is located near the Great Vault in Dornogal. Here’s what you can spend them on:

Item Cost What It Does
S.A.D. 6 Tokens Adds a socket to Season 2 gear (Helms, Bracers, Belts).
Golden Valorstone 1 Token Grants 75 Valorstones for upgrading gear.
Triumphant Satchel of Carved Undermine Crests 1 Token Gives 15 Carved Undermine Crests for gear upgrades.
Celebratory Pack of Runed Undermine Crests 2 Tokens Grants 15 Runed Undermine Crests for high-end upgrades.
Chest of Gold 2 Tokens Rewards 1,000 Gold for extra spending money.

You can only hold 12 Tokens at a time. Make sure to spend them before claiming more. These tokens reset with each new season. This means any leftovers from a past season will be converted into vendor trash worth 500 Gold per token.

While gear is usually the best choice, Merit Tokens are a solid alternative if:

  1. None of the Vault rewards are upgrades.
  2. You need Valorstones or Crests to upgrade your current gear.
  3. You want to add a socket to a high-value item.

As you can see, this system is super flexible and allows you to benefit from it even if you don’t like the rewards offered. Always feel free to go for this currency instead if nothing suits you this week.

Conclusion

This brings us to the end of our Great Vault guide, travelers of Azeroth. This system still remains one of the most important ways to gear up in Season 2 and further. By participating in your favorite activities, you can increase your reward options and improve your character's progression. If none of the loot options work for you, Algari Tokens of Merit provide valuable alternatives. Keep up with your weekly objectives to make the most out of every reset.
