Diablo 4 Pandemonium Ruptures Explained

Pandemonium Ruptures in Diablo 4 Season of Death Awakening is a new seasonal activity that breaks the barrier between Sanctuary and Pandemonium, which I guess is kind of like hell in Diablo?
In any case, there are 3 kinds of Pandemonium Ruptures:
- Standard - can spawn anywhere in the world, with a higher chance of them appearing in Helltides.
- Surging ruptures - a more intense version that spawns inside Helltides during local zone events. Have a chance to spawn Realmwalkers if completed with Mastery.
- Colossal ruptures - the largest one that spawns near the world boss arena close to Zarbinzet. Guarantees a Realmwalker encounter.
Either one of those can be started by killing the cultists that surround what the devs call a Death Head Idol. Doing so will create a circle around the idol and spawn multiple rifts. Monsters will start spawning as well.
You can keep it active by killing monsters and sealing those rifts. The longer the rupture remains open, the better the rewards will drop. The monsters that spawn in these Ruptures actually belong to a new type called “The Risen”. I’d say that the most notable specimen is Exarch, who consumes the orbs that fall off of lesser Risen on death to power his attacks. Those orbs can be intercepted to prevent the Exarchs from getting the buff.
Randomly, a Rupture Goblin may spawn, and killing it will create another active rupture where it died.
Who are the Realmwalkers?
Realmwalkers are these massive monsters that can only appear in Surging or Colossal ruptures. Their attacks include bullet-hell-style arcane orbs flying around once they die; they leave a portal to the Deathtoll Chamber.
As you may know, Realmwalkers used to work differently before. They would spawn in a region on a timer. Then started walking around the zone “in search of sacred ground.” You would follow them around and kill Bloodbound Guardians around them. Once it reached the ritual site, it slammed into the ground and spawned Hatred Spires. In any case, now, they serve as access to the Deathtoll Chamber.
What’s Inside The Deathtoll Chamber?
Deathtoll Chamber is an arena that can be accessed in a number of ways:
- Killing the Realmwalker
- Clearing the Nightmare dungeon with the “Ruptures” affix
Check out my full guide for more info, but in short, the chamber is just one room with a Deathtoll Pillar in the middle of it. Once you activate it, you get a 60-second timer, as explained in the developer’s live stream. You’ll see two circles, the big one and a small one; your objective is to kill enemies that spawn fast enough to expand the smaller circle until it reaches the bigger one. If you succeed, you’ll be rewarded with valuable loot, including Superior Lair Keys, which are used to open Seasonal Lair Bosses’ (eg., Corrupted Reaper) Hoards in tiers from Torment I and above. Actually, Betrayer's Husks may be the ones that are used to unlock these chests, according to Fextralife, although all other sources claim otherwise. I’ll update this once the update is live.
Pandemonium Ruptures Rewards
Here’s what you can get for completing these Ruptures, besides the seasonal progress and challenges:
|
Reward |
How it comes from Ruptures |
|
Regular loot drops |
Monsters inside the Rupture drop gear, gold, materials, etc. |
|
Rupture chest rewards |
Blizzard said Rupture chests were improved after PTR feedback. |
|
Glints of Hope |
Closing Ruptures gives Glints of Hope, which you spend at the Zarbinzet reputation board. |
|
Pandemonium Fragments |
Earned primarily through the Zarbinzet Reputation Board and defeating the Corrupted Reaper. Sealing Ruptures also grants a smaller amount of post-PTR tuning. |
|
More rewards the longer it stays open |
Killing monsters and closing Tears keeps the Rupture active longer, and longer uptime means better rewards. |
To me personally, the most valuable reward is a chance to visit the Deathtoll Chamber and get those Superior Lair Keys. I’ll update this section and add more specific rewards as soon as the season is live.
