The Best Way to Gear Up in TBC Classic Anniversary

The best way to gear up in TBC Anniversary is not tied to a single activity, but to getting the gear that you need from the source that it drops from. Dungeons, raids, and PvP are what you’ll be doing if you want that BiS. The problem is – you can’t really just stick to one, you gotta do them all, or at least several of them to find the best possible gear.

Doing a little bit of everything, obviously, takes longer than focusing on something specific. Dungeon and reputation gear covers the basics. PvP provides raid-level upgrades without lockouts, and raids, most of the time, are the source of the final upgrade for your loadout, once they become available. This guide will show you all gear sources leading up to the max level endgame content so that you can work out your own TBC Classic Anniversary gear progression.

Dungeon Gear

TBC Classic Anniversary dungeon gear is still the first thing you focus on when chasing the BiS from lvl 60+. There haven’t been any changes to how this works (thankfully), so it is still the most reliable way to get good gear in the early endgame phase. No matter what class or role you’re playing, you’ll be able to upgrade your gear pretty significantly through dungeon farming alone.

While leveling, dungeon gear always gives you a nice boost in ilvl and an overall upgrade. It’s a bad, bad idea to ignore dungeons. And besides, at level 70, normal dungeons are still relevant if you want to get specific things that your build might be missing – trinkets, weapons. Turning over dungeon quests rewards guaranteed rare-quality items. Below are the most important dungeons and standout loot pieces that you should get first for your character.

Hellfire Ramparts

Crow Wing Reaper, Shoulderpads of Assassination

The stuff from these dungeons replaces most pre-Outland gear and provides weapons and stat upgrades big enough to carry you all the way to early level 70 content.

At level 70, most players will be using these dungeons to get ready for the raids, find high-impact trinkets and weapons, and prepare for Heroics, PvP, and early raids. Dungeon gear is not intended to be long-term best-in-slot, but it is the starting point that you need to get through before you do more difficult content.

Heroic Dungeon Gear

Once you hit lvl 70, you’ll get access to a higher difficulty of dungeons - Heroic. This difficulty is the source of exclusive loot that just won’t drop on Normal difficulty. Heroics are tuned to be pretty hard and are best viewed as a targeted gearing path and not as a full replacement for raids or PvP. Their value comes from specific high-impact items, especially trinkets, rings, gems, and some stuff for your professions.

Below is a full list of TBC Anniversary heroic dungeon gear that players go for when preparing for raids.

Heroic-only loot is THE source of trinkets, rings, gems, and weapons, which tend to scale better than armor slots and remain useful well into early raiding and PvP. Many of these items are considered pre-raid best-in-slot for specific specs.

Heroics are also the primary source of:

Because of their difficulty and how much time they take, it's best to run Heroics when you’re looking for a specific piece of gear. Farming them aimlessly for minor armor upgrades is not really worth it. Get the items that matter, then move on. BLOG20

Raid Gear

Raids are the main source of big upgrades in the Anniversary edition. With Tier 4 launching in a post-nerf state, early raids are faster and take less time to run than extended Heroic dungeon farming. So, raid gear will quickly replace all of your dungeon gear (for most specs) and become the BiS stuff you hunt for as phases roll out.

Instead of listing every drop, the tables below focus on tier tokens and TBC Classic Anniversary raid gear you should care about.

Phase 1 – Tier 4 Raids

Raid

Notable Items

Karazhan

Fiery Warhorse’s Reins, Nathrezim Mindblade, Ring of a Thousand Marks

Gruul’s Lair

25

Shoulders, Legs

Dragonspine Trophy, Aldori Legacy Defender

Magtheridon’s Lair

25

Chest

A’dal’s Signet of Defense, Band of Crimson Fury

Karazhan gives you the first Tier 4 pieces and a bunch of strong weapons. Gruul’s Lair is mandatory for physical DPS due to the Dragonspine Trophy. Magtheridon completes Tier 4 with a powerful role-specific ring via quest.

Phase 2 – Tier 5 Raids

Serpentshrine Cavern

Helm, Legs, Gloves

Belt of One-Hundred Deaths, Tsunami Talisman

The Eye (Tempest Keep)

25

Chest, Shoulders

Ashes of Al’ar, Warp-Slicer

Tier 5 is going to be your first major stat jump. SSC and Tempest Keep gear replaces nearly all Phase 1 items, especially for casters and healers.

Phase 3 – Tier 6 Raids

Notable Items

Hyjal Summit

Helm, Gloves

Band of the Eternal Defender, Archimonde loot

Black Temple

Chest, Legs, Shoulders

Warglaive of Azzinoth, Ashtongue trinkets

The TBC Classic Anniversary endgame gearing and hunting for the tier 6 defines late-game builds. Black Temple introduces legendaries and class-defining trinkets that remain relevant through Sunwell.

Catch-Up and Final Raids

Notable Items

Zul’Aman

10

None

Hex Shrunken Head, Shard of Contempt

Sunwell Plateau

25

Belt, Boots, Wrists

Thori’dal, the Stars’ Fury, Glaives-level stat upgrades

Zul’Aman acts as a catch-up raid with extremely efficient loot for alts. Sunwell Plateau is the final gear destination and replaces almost every previous item.

Getting into raids as early as possible is much better than sticking with Heroic dungeons, gear-wise. Try to do raids as soon as they unlock.

PvP Gear

TBC Classic Anniversary PvP gearing is a totally normal path to take, if that’s the type of content you prefer. You can mix it with PvE, and you probably should. The old Rank 14 system is gone. All PvP gear is now earned through Honor, Marks, and Arena Points, with no rank or title requirements.

Season 1 PvP gear is about the same as Karazhan, Gruul, and Magtheridon loot, in terms of power, with the main difference being stat allocation. PvP gear prioritises Resilience over damage, which reduces critical strike chance and damage taken from crits.

Many classes mix PvP and PvE items. You’ll often see how burst-focused specs go for PvE weapons or trinkets, and fill defensive slots with PvP pieces.

Honor Gear

Honor is the source of the best PvP gear TBC Classic Anniversary, which is acquired through Battlegrounds and world PvP. All pieces can be purchased without rating requirements.

Medallion of the Alliance / Horde

Level 70 version grants Resilience and CC removal

Weapons

Off Pieces

Cloaks, Bracers, Belts, Boots

Only source for PvP off pieces

Honor can be capped, and Marks can be stacked up before launch, making this the fastest way to enter level 70 PvP with usable gear.

Vendors are located in Stormwind and Orgrimmar, with equivalent Champion Halls for each faction.

Arena Gear

TBC Classic Anniversary arena gear represents the strongest PvP-specific equipment and requires Arena Points, earned weekly by completing at least 10 matches.

Gloves, Chest, Legs, Helm

1700 Rating

Weapons

2000 Rating

Shoulders

Arena gear pieces form the Gladiator set (Season 1). These items have no PvE equivalent and are mandatory for competitive PvP.

Key Anniversary Edition changes:

  • Teams are removed. Rating is personal.
  • All players start at a 1500 rating.
  • Arena Points are earned weekly and do not have a catch-up stuff to chase.
  • Playing 5v5 grants the most points per week.

Most players run 10 low-effort 5v5 games weekly to fund Arena gear, then push rating in 2v2 or 3v3 if desired.

Reputation Gear

TBC Classic Anniversary reputation gear is identical in stats to Honor set pieces and exists to reduce Honor grind, especially for alts.

Reputation

Item Slot

The Sha’tar

Chest

Cenarion Expedition

Gloves

Honor Hold / Thrallmar

Helm

Keepers of Time

Legs

Lower City

Shoulders

These pieces count toward PvP set bonuses and can be mixed freely with Honor gear. Off pieces are still Honor-only.

Reputation gear is available earlier in the Anniversary edition compared to the regular TBC Classic. So, players will definitely make use of reputation farming to get gear on their way to max level.

Profession and Crafted Gear

Crafted gear plays a small but critical role for certain classes.

Profession

Key Items

Blacksmithing

Stormherald / Deep Thunder

Tailoring

Spellstrike Set

Leatherworking

Drums of War

Jewelcrafting

Unique PvP Gems

The most interesting in this list is Deep Thunder, which is widely considered better than Season 1 Arena weapons for Warriors due to its stun proc. Crafted weapons often replace Arena weapons entirely for specific specs.

Quest and Attunement Requirements

Attunements and other quests are a good source of the TBC Classic Anniversary fresh 70 gearing.
