Slumber Plunges enemies in a short sleep unless they get hit. It’s great for crowd control or giving yourself breathing room. It can also help you reset in PvP fights.
Thermal Equilibrium This passive keeps your burn going longer. Every time you freeze someone, it refreshes your fire damage if they’re already burning. Helps sustain your combos in long fights.

Also, there are four core Mage skills you get automatically by leveling. These aren’t tied to talent points. One of them is Elemental Empowerment. It’s a toggle you turn on, and it adds area damage and debuffs to your weapon finishers based on your current elemental attunement.

Fire applies Burning and resets Firebolt and Fireball cooldowns. Lightning applies Volatile, which reduces enemy magic defense and resets Lightning Strike. Ice applies Chill stacks and resets Frostbolt, perfect for slowing enemies or setting up a freeze.

You can deactivate this toggle any time to clear your element and cast Prismatic Beam without attunement, which restores mana. That’s super handy when mana is running low during long fights.

Mage Weapons

Mage weapons in Ashes of Creation are all about one thing: magical power. No matter what type you’re using, your main goal is to equip whatever gives you the most magic damage. It’s really just about whichever gives you more magic damage.

Your ranged slot gives you three options: Wand, Focus, or Spellbook. Wands are considered best-in-slot because they’re faster and trigger your weapon tree procs more often. Still, if you come across a high-power Spellbook with crazy stats, don’t hesitate to use it. Ideally, a Wand and Focus combo is your go-to, but flexibility is key while leveling or exploring.

Now let’s get into something huge: weapon trees. These are separate progression systems that level independently from your character. Every time your weapon gains XP, you earn points to invest in its tree, up to level 25. These trees add tons of bonuses like extra damage, elemental effects, and even utility.

Here’s how the system works:

  • First, choose an elemental path: Fire, Frost, or Lightning.
  • Your weapon finishers then have a base 25% chance to apply that elemental debuff (Burning, Chill, or Volatile).
  • You can invest in branching nodes to boost effect duration, proc rate, or power.
  • More advanced nodes give bonuses like mana refund, extra crit, or double projectile shots.

For example, if you spec into Fire, your weapon might apply strong burns, and you can scale it further with nodes that extend the duration or increase damage. Frost setups let you build Chill stacks to freeze enemies, and Lightning setups reduce enemy magic resistance by applying Volatile.

You benefit from both your melee and ranged weapon trees at the same time. So, if your Spell Sword is set to burn and your Wand is tuned to chill, both effects can trigger together. This lets you layer multiple debuffs and create powerful combos with your spells.

Finishers come in types like Deadly, Extended, or Extended Deadly, and each brings its own bonuses. At higher levels, you’ll unlock things like Essence Harvest, which boosts your magical power every time a finisher hits. It stacks, too, up to five times.

Another neat feature is the accuracy boost that comes from leveling your weapon trees. Every five levels gives a bit more accuracy, helping you land your hits more reliably as your weapon grows stronger.

Single Target Rotation

Here’s the best single target rotation for Mage in AoC:

  1. Arcane Circle (use on cooldown every 90 seconds for 30% damage buff and triple stacking).
  2. Ball Lightning (use on cooldown, ideally before each Shatter).
  3. Set up Shatter: Hoarfrost/Cone of Cold or Frostbolt/Wand.
  4. Lightning Strike (fully charged).
  5. Firebolt x2 for Fuse.
  6. Combust.
  7. Firebolt x1 (because Combust uses up the previous burns — this reapplies a new one).
  8. Prismatic Beam (use on cooldown; aim to pair with Arcane Circle every other cast).
  9. Auto-attack until Hoarfrost/Cone of Cold are ready, then set up for another Shatter.
