Apex Legends New Legends Upgrade System Explained

Following the Apex Legends patch notes 02.13.2024, the groundbreaking Legend Upgrade system is a game-altering feature designed to elevate the Battle Royale experience to new heights. This in-match progression system introduces a dynamic layer to the gameplay, allowing players to customize their Legend's abilities and armor, tailoring them to suit individual playstyles.

The system is reset at the beginning of each match, providing a fresh opportunity to experiment with diverse upgrades. The pivotal currency for this system is EVO, serving as the catalyst to Level-Up your Legend throughout the game. As you accumulate EVO points, your Legend's armor tier improves, unlocking unique upgrade selections at Levels 2 and 3.

The Apex Legends patch notes Season 20 suggest huge impact, as each player's strategic choices in upgrading their Legend directly impact the dynamics of the squad. This introduces a layer of coordination and decision-making that extends beyond individual gameplay. Tactical decisions on upgrades can sway the course of a match, adding depth to the team's overall strategy. BLOG20

It's noteworthy that Legend Upgrades and EVO changes are exclusive to Battle Royale modes within Breakout as specified in Apex Legends update 02.13.2024. This limitation suggests a deliberate focus on refining the Battle Royale experience, creating a distinct identity for the Legend Upgrade system within the Breakout season.

Apex Legends Shield Cores

Shield Cores is a game-changer that tweaks how armor works in the Apex Legends new patch update. Say goodbye to finding Body Shields on the ground in Battle Royale – now, all Legends have something called Legend Armor. This armor gets better as you level up during a match.

The key component in this new system is the Shield Core. It's like the boss of your armor, holding the current shield health. You can swap or drop Shield Cores anytime you want, just like before. But here's the twist: when you defeat an opponent, they'll drop Shield Cores in their Death Box.

Now, picking up a higher-level Shield Core isn't just about having better shields. It gives you a temporary power-up – overcharging your armor. This means you get extra shield health for 30 seconds, adding a whole new layer of strategy to your battles. But remember, after 30 seconds, it goes back to your Legend Armor's max capacity.

Tactical insight: This change isn't just about shields; it adds a new layer to how you play. Now, you've got to think about when to grab Shield Cores from defeated enemies. It's all about making smart decisions during the heat of the action.

Apex Legends EVO - The New Points System in BR

There’s a new mechanic in Season 20 that involves a point slash currency system called “EVO.” The way it works is - by performing certain actions you will gain these points either for yourself or for an entire squad. Refer to the table below to learn which actions will add points to your personal score and which ones will add up to the team’s score:

Personal Gains Team Gains
  • Dealing Damage
  • Wiping entire squads
  • Knocking enemies or Assisting in Knocking enemies
  • Reviving teammates
  • Underdog XP bonus for higher-level knocks
  • Respawning teammates
  • Performing a Finisher
  • Interacting with Surveay beacons and other class-related interactable objects
  • Opening Care Packages and Vaults
  • Fighting the Wildlife, completing Trials, etc.
-
  • Interacting with EVO Harvesters

This table outlines the actions that contribute to earning EVO points, categorizing them into personal gains and team gains. Personal gains include dealing damage, knocks and assists, underdog XP bonuses, finishers, and interacting with EVO Caches. On the other hand, team gains involve activities like squad wipes, revives, respawns, various class interactions, world interactions, and utilizing EVO Harvesters. This new system not only rewards individual performance but also emphasizes teamwork, encouraging strategic collaboration among squad members.

Now, you’ve seen something about the EVO Harvesters. These are new interactable objects that deploy on the map in random places in each match. They can’t be used right away, but once available, they grant a large amount of EVO points to the entire squad.

Another new interactable object is something called EVO Caches. These are new type of containers that will only spawn in hot and highly contested areas and vaults. Opening them will also grant a lot of EVO and also increase the Legend level by one. BLOG20

Apex Legends New Ranked Rules

The developers admit that the ranked play has had a lot of issues in the past. So, in order to make this particular game mode fairer and more fun, they are introducing a few new changes in Apex Legends that will supposedly make things better:

  1. Level Requirement Reduction: The level requirement for participating in Ranked play is going back down to 20.
  2. Return of Splits: Splits, a seasonal segmentation of the ranked system, will be reintroduced.
  3. Season Reset: With the return of splits, the season reset mechanism will also be implemented.
  4. Starting RP Adjustment: At the launch of Breakout, every player will commence the season with 1 RP.
  5. Quick Split Reset: There will be a quick split reset during each split, causing a drop of six divisions in player rankings.
  6. Ranked Tier Badge: Players will receive a Ranked Tier Badge at the end of the season, representing the highest rank achieved across all platforms.
  7. Match Entry Fee: 20 RP

On top of it all, the developers have redesigned how you gain your score. The scoring system is not fair as it prioritizes frags over placement, and it does not depend on any hidden skill rating. Moreover, frags will grant a higher score the higher your placement in the match is. However, each frag will give you 50% less points after the sixth kill.

The bonus RP is granted to those who get placed in the top 55 several matches in a row. Here’s how the additional points are counted:

  • 2-match streak: Earn an additional +10 RP.
  • 3-match streak: Earn an additional +20 RP.
  • 4-match streak: Earn an additional +30 RP.
  • 5 or more match streaks: Earn an additional +40 RP.

Additionally, if you kill or assist in killing a higher ranked player, you’ll get 50% more RP. But it won’t work after the sixth kill.

Apex Legends Ranked Matchmaking and Reworked Tiers

Matchmaking is no longer based on tiers. Instead, the game will find you a game based on your RP. There have also been some significant changes to how the tiers are structured:

  • Promotional Trials are no more

The promotion process will no longer involve specific trial matches, and instead, advancement may be based on consistent performance over time.

  • Provisional Matches are no more

Provisional Matches are usually the initial ranked matches a player plays in a new season or after a reset. They help the system assess the player's skill level. The removal indicates that the ranked system may now use different methods to evaluate player skill at the beginning of a season, potentially relying more on previous season performance or other factors.

  • Demotion and Demotion Protection didn’t change

Demotion Protection is a system that prevents players from being demoted even if their performance drops below the usual threshold.

  • Ranked Tier RP requirements are somewhat increased

This suggests that the RP (Ranked Points) required to progress through the tiers will be higher compared to the previous season. Players will need to achieve a higher level of performance to climb the ranked ladder, reflecting a potential adjustment in the difficulty or competitiveness of reaching higher tiers.

In summary, these changes indicate adjustments in the processes of promotion, initial assessment, demotion, and the RP requirements for each tier in Apex Legends' ranked system for the Breakout season. These changes are likely made in response to player feedback and the ongoing efforts to refine and enhance the ranked experience.

Apex Legends New Map

Besides sweeping changes to the ranked system and some core BR mechanics, new seasons bring more content and some other minor yet still very much appreciated changes. But let’s start with the Thunderdome - a new map for all Mixtape modes is set in the legendary Kings Canyon. Suited for all modes, this map’s design is perfect for every tactic and strategy you can pull off.

Last but not least, the developers are adding the support of 120Hz monitors as a new video graphics preset that allows your console to meet the desired frame rate.

On a bit of a sad note, the official representation of clans in the game that were called Clubs are leaving the game. What little remains is the ability to put your clan/club’s tag in front of your nickname. Whether this feature was not as popular as the developers hoped for, they decided not to evolve it any further.

Conclusion

With the Apex Legends patch Season 20 release date around the corner, we prepare to embark on the thrilling journey where the game’s core is set to undergo a transformative experience. With innovations like the Legend Upgrade system, revamped armor dynamics, and a reimagined ranked play, Breakout promises a season of unparalleled excitement. The 5th Anniversary celebration introduces not just features but a new era of gameplay. So, Legends, gear up for a revolution on the battlefield, where every match is a chapter in the evolving saga of the Apex Games. Here's to the next chapter and the countless adventures it holds! See you on the dropship!
