How Our Clash of Clans Tier List Works

There are over 90 troops in the game. So, to rank them all fairly and to find the best troop in Clash of Clans, we need a good ranking system. So, instead of giving you a tier list, we’re going to be doing 5 of them, one per each of the troop types:

  1. Elixir – Elixir troops are trained in the standard Barracks. Upgrading the Barracks unlocks additional Elixir troops. You can also enhance their abilities by researching them in the Laboratory, making them more powerful.
  2. Dark Elixir – Dark Elixir troops are special units unlocked and trained in the Dark Barracks. Similar to Elixir troops, you can increase their strength by researching them in the Laboratory.
  3. Super Troops – Super Troops are enhanced versions of regular troops with unique abilities. You can temporarily upgrade a standard troop to its Super Troop counterpart using Dark Elixir or a Super Potion once you reach Town Hall 11 and meet the base troop's level requirements. They can also be received earlier through Clan donations. Super Troops require more housing space and have proportionally increased training times. Only two types of Super Troops can be active at any given time.
  4. Builder Base – Builder Base Troops are trained in the Builder Barracks and used for battles in the Builder Base. Upgrading the Builder Barracks unlocks more troops. Their abilities can be enhanced by researching them in the Star Laboratory.
  5. Clan Capital – Clan Capital Troops are used for Raids in the Clan Capital. Some troops are deployed in squads that must be released together. These troops are trained in specialized Barracks located in various districts, and upgrading these Barracks enhances the troops' abilities.

There are also Temporary troops, but these are time-limited units that are only available during certain events. They’re not going to be featured in our Clash of Clans troop tier list. Instead, we’re focusing on core game units. The format of our tier list is going to be pretty classic. We’ll have tiers S to D, where S is the tier for the strongest and most meta troops, whereas D tier is for troops that likely aren’t worth your time. Here’s what each of the tiers means: BLOG20

  • S Tier: Troops in this category are the elite forces of "Clash of Clans." Their performance and versatility outshine all others, making them indispensable for any attack strategy. These units can handle a wide range of situations and are essential for top-tier gameplay.
  • A Tier: These troops are highly effective and versatile, though not quite at the pinnacle like S Tier units. They excel in many scenarios and can be the backbone of strong attack strategies, offering a reliable option for most battles.
  • B Tier: Troops in this tier are solid performers that strike a balance between strength and versatility. They are useful in many situations and can complement stronger units effectively, making them a valuable part of diverse attack compositions.
  • C Tier: Troops here are effective under specific conditions but lack the overall strength and adaptability of higher-tier units. They can be useful in niche strategies or supporting roles but struggle to handle tougher bases on their own.
  • D Tier: These troops are the least effective and are generally not suited for taking down strong bases without significant support from higher-tier units. They are best used in very specific scenarios or as filler troops in larger strategies.

With that being said, first, we’re going to give you one big tier list that has all the troops from all categories, but then we’re going to take a few names from each of the tiers in each of the categories and explain our rankings for individual troops.

Clash of Clans Troops Tier List

Below, you will find the complete tier list of troops. As with any tier list, it is necessary to make a disclaimer – any ranking made is purely subjective. Furthermore, tier lists are prone to quickly becoming outdated. Therefore, if you don’t agree with what you see below, please bear in mind that this tier list is not ideal. We will do our due diligence and update it when we see a meta shift or addition of new troops in the game.

Now that you have some idea as to what troops are good and which ones are not so good in each category, it’s time to take a closer look at each of the categories separately. To be fair, we didn’t list absolutely all troops in Clash of Clans because the ones that we left out are the heroes and pets, which are quite different in nature compared to regular troops.

Clash of Clans Elixir Troops Tier List

Elixir troops are the first kind of special troops that you build in your Barracks or Laboratory. Like many other units, Exlir troops can be upgraded when you level up the Barracks.

Tiers Elixir Troops
S Tier Yeti, Root Rider, Electro Titan
A Tier Baby Dragon, Electro Dragon, Miner, Balloon, Dragon Rider, Druid
B Tier Wizard, Dragon, PEKKA, Wall Breaker, Healer
C Tier Giant, Archer, Goblin
D Tier Barbarian

As you can see here, some of the classic troops have been pushed down a couple of tiers by newer and more effective troops. This tends to happen in all games that have continuous support and regular content updates. Now, let’s see who’s made it into our S Tier.

S-Tier Elixir Troops Explained

As of this moment, we have three Elixir troops worth of S Tier; let’s meet them:

  • Yeti
  • Root Rider
  • Electro Titan

The Yeti is considered an S-Tier Elixir Troop in Clash of Clans due to its high health and attack power, combined with the unique ability to spawn Yetimites that deal additional damage. This makes the Yeti a versatile and powerful asset in both offensive and defensive strategies. Offensively, Yetis are effective for funneling and tanking, especially when paired with Healers in strategies like the Yeti Smash, where they push deep into bases. Defensively, despite their vulnerability to air troops and Poison Spells, they can still be useful at certain Town Hall levels. The strategic deployment of Yetis and their ability to distract and destroy key defenses contribute to their S-Tier status.

Robot Rider is another solid S-Tier unit in this top troops tier list. It’s often seen being used by top players. The Root Rider is considered an S-Tier Elixir Troop in Clash of Clans due to her unique combination of high hitpoints, defense-targeting capabilities, and wall-breaking abilities. Riding atop a mobile tree root, she can quickly dismantle Walls and defenses, making her highly effective in both offensive and defensive strategies. Offensively, Root Riders excel in tanking and breaking open bases, allowing other troops to funnel through. When paired with spells like Rage or Haste, they can bypass Walls even faster, though they may not fully destroy them. Defensively, their high hitpoints and ability to break Walls make them formidable obstacles, and they can be effectively paired with other troops like Valkyries, Witches, and Heroes for powerful synergies. Despite their slow speed and low damage, their versatility and strategic advantages at higher Town Hall levels solidify their S-Tier status.

The Electro Dragon is an S-Tier Elixir Troop in Clash of Clans due to its high damage output and unique chain lightning attack. Unlocked at Barracks Level 13, these powerful air units excel in offensive strategies, particularly against bases with clustered buildings. The Electro Dragon's chain lightning can hit up to five targets, dealing massive damage across multiple structures. This makes them especially effective when combined with the Grand Warden in air mode, as he can boost their health and support them by destroying defenses. Additionally, using spells like Rage or Haste can enhance their destructive power, allowing them to quickly obliterate key targets.

Defensively, Electro Dragons are formidable due to their ability to damage multiple troops at once with their chain lightning. Their presence can significantly disrupt enemy attacks, especially if the opponent lacks appropriate countermeasures. While they are vulnerable to Poison Spells and can be stalled by Air Sweepers, their overall damage potential and strategic versatility make them a top-tier choice for both attacking and defending in high-level gameplay.

Clash of Clans Dark Elixir Troops Tier List

Dark Elixir troops are considered more advanced compared to the previous category, mainly because the resource required for their production is unlocked at higher levels of Town Hall. Nevertheless, there are some strong and weak units in this category.

Tier Dark Elixir Troops
S Tier Minion, Bowler
A Tier Hog Rider, Ice Golem, Headhunter
B Tier Valkyrie, Golem, Lava Hound, Witch
C Tier Apprentice Warden

When it comes to the best of the best among Dark Elixir troops, we can highlight Minions and Bowlers.

S Tier Dark Elixir Troops Explained

Out of 90+ units in the game, there are only 10 Dark Elixir troops, and only two of them are meta right now.

  • Minion
  • Bowler

The Minion is definitely among the Clash of Clans meta troops due to several key factors. Firstly, they are fast and versatile air troops with immunity to Seeking Air Mines, allowing them to avoid certain aerial defenses. They can engage both ground and air targets effectively, providing utility in various attack strategies. Minions are highly efficient in picking off unprotected buildings, especially in Clan Wars and corner structures, thanks to their mobility and ability to bypass ground defenses.

Their low housing space (only 2 units) makes them ideal for group rush strategies and efficient farming attacks, particularly in combination with Balloons in the Balloonion and Lavaloonion strategies. These combinations utilize Minions for cleanup and additional damage once primary defenses are down, with spells like Rage, Haste, and Healing enhancing their effectiveness. Their ability to overpower single-target defenses, such as Air Defenses, due to their sheer numbers is another strategic advantage. BLOG20

Defensively, Minions can be a formidable addition to the Clan Castle, providing aerial defense against ground-only troops and complementing other defensive units with their moderate damage output. Their swarm potential can overwhelm defenses if not properly countered, making them a versatile and powerful option in various scenarios.

The Bowler is one of the Clash of Clans best troops for attack due to its unique attack mechanics and strategic versatility. The Bowler throws a large boulder that bounces, dealing splash damage on the initial impact and again on the second bounce. This ability to hit multiple targets in a straight line makes Bowlers highly effective in both offensive and defensive strategies.

On offense, Bowlers excel when protected by tank units such as Golems, Ice Golems, or P.E.K.K.As. They can quickly take out multiple buildings, making them valuable for funneling and sniping structures on the edge of bases without taking damage themselves. The BoWitch strategy, which combines Bowlers with Witches, is particularly powerful at Town Hall levels 10 and 11 due to the synergy between the two troops.

Defensively, Bowlers are vulnerable to splash damage and concentrated attacks. Eagle Artillery and Giant Bombs can wipe out groups of Bowlers due to their relatively low hitpoints for their housing space. However, when used effectively, they can disrupt enemy attack formations and deal significant damage to advancing troops.

The Bowler's upgrade path also enhances its effectiveness. As it levels up, the Bowler gains visual changes and increased damage, with the boulder gaining crystals that match the themes of higher Town Hall levels, adding to its intimidation factor.

Clash of Clans Super Troops Tier List

Super troops are the empowered versions of their regular counterpart, which the name implies. They basically do the same thing as the original version but with greater effectiveness and some bonus effects or abilities. A unit can become Super for a limited time if you use a Potion on it. But be mindful of the fact that Super troops take more housing space.

Tier Super Troops
S Tier Sneaky Goblin, Super Bowler, Super Wall Breaker
A Tier Super Wizard, Super Archer, Rocket Balloon, Super Miner, Super Minion
B Tier Super Barbarian, Super Witch, Super Hog Rider
C Tier Super Giant, Super Dragon, Inferno Dragon
D Tier Super Valkyrie, Ice Hound

Out of 16 Super troops, only 3 of them are considered meta. It doesn’t mean that the rest of them are worthless, though. It all comes down to case-by-case usage. Some of these units are more specialized and perform the best in certain situations. Meanwhile, S Tier is more or less a must-have.

S Tier Super Troops Explained

We decided to put three Super troops into our S Tier:

  • Sneaky Goblin
  • Super Bowler
  • Super Wall Breaker

The Sneaky Goblin is a Tier Super Troop in Clash of Clans due to its unique abilities and strategic advantages. Its Cloak ability grants invisibility for 5 seconds after deployment, allowing it to approach and loot resource buildings without being targeted by defenses. With enhanced damage and hitpoints compared to regular Goblins, Sneaky Goblins are more effective and durable in resource raids.

They prioritize resource buildings, including the Clan Castle and Town Hall, dealing double damage to these structures. This focus ensures efficient resource gain and swift destruction of high-value targets. The ability to boost Goblins into Sneaky Goblins from Town Hall 11 onwards offers strategic flexibility, making them useful for both farming and war attacks. Additionally, Sneaky Goblins can be donated to Clanmates with a level 4 Clan Castle or higher, increasing their accessibility to lower Town Hall players. These factors collectively make the Sneaky Goblin a top-tier troop in the game.

The Super Bowler is a Tier Super Troop in Clash of Clans because of its enhanced abilities and significant strategic impact. By boosting a Bowler to a Super Bowler, it gains the ability to throw larger purple boulders that bounce three times, dealing splash damage with each impact. This extended range allows Super Bowlers to hit multiple targets in a straight line more effectively than regular Bowlers.

Requiring Town Hall 12 to boost but available for donation to players with a level 6 Clan Castle from Town Hall 10, Super Bowlers become accessible and advantageous for various attack strategies. They automatically target the closest building but will switch to engage enemy troops if nearby friendly troops are attacked.

The increased range, splash damage, and accessibility of Super Bowlers make them a highly valuable asset in both offensive and defensive strategies, contributing to their S Tier status in Clash of Clans.

The Super Wall Breaker is an S Tier Super Troop in Clash of Clans due to its enhanced abilities and strategic utility. Unlockable by boosting a level 7 Wall Breaker, the Super Wall Breaker rolls on a large barrel bomb, moves faster, and deals significantly more damage than a normal Wall Breaker. Its Mega Bomb ability ensures that its bomb detonates even if it fails to reach its target, making it extremely reliable for breaking through walls.

Players need Town Hall 11 to boost Wall Breakers into Super Wall Breakers, but they can be donated to players with a level 5 Clan Castle from Town Hall 9 onward. This accessibility, combined with its ability to destroy walls up to two levels higher in one hit, makes it a crucial asset in both low and high-level gameplay.

The Super Wall Breaker's priority targeting of walls and its guaranteed explosive damage enhance its effectiveness in breaching defenses, making it a valuable troop for both offensive strategies and overcoming fortified bases.

Clash of Clans Builder Base Troops Tier List

The Builder Base mode is a separate game mode where you attack and defend custom-built bases that exist separately from the main castles and villages. A special type of troop has been added specifically for this game mode. Here’s a tier list for them:

Tier Builder Base Troops
S Tier Electrofire Wizard, Power PEKKA
A Tier Beta Minion, Bomber, Baby Dragon, Cannon Cart, Sneaky Archer, Night Witch
B Tier Hog Glider, Raged Barbarian, Boxer Giant, Drop Ship

There aren’t that many units in this game mode compared to the base game, but there are still a few that can be ranked as the best.

S Tier Builder Base Troops Tier List

As of 2024, the meta consists of two units:

  • Electrofire Wizard
  • Power PEKKA

The Electrofire Wizard in the Builder Base is considered an S Tier troop due to its versatile capabilities and strategic flexibility. It's the final troop unlocked at Builder Barracks level 12, requiring Builder Hall level 10. It features two distinct modes: Inferno Mode and Electro Mode.

In Inferno Mode, the Electrofire Wizard emits a continuous Inferno beam that ramps up in damage over time, making it effective against single targets and tanky defenses when supported by tanks like Boxer Giants or Power P.E.K.K.As. This mode is also useful for funneling and clearing outer defenses.

Switching to Electro Mode allows the Electrofire Wizard to unleash chain lightning attacks that can hit up to four targets, ideal for sniping X-Bows and dealing with clustered defenses. This mode requires strategic placement due to its slower preparation time and decreasing damage per additional target hit.

The Power P.E.K.K.A in the Builder Base is highly regarded for its substantial hitpoints and powerful Overcharge ability. Unlocked at Builder Barracks level 10, requiring Builder Hall level 8, it serves as a tank and high-damage unit. The Overcharge ability allows it to perform an explosive leap, dealing area damage, which can be triggered manually or occurs automatically upon death.

Offensively, the Power P.E.K.K.A's high health makes it ideal for absorbing damage and triggering traps, while its Overcharge ability can take out clustered enemy troops like Zappies. It can act as a substitute for the Battle Machine, especially during upgrades, but lacks the regenerative ability, necessitating careful use. Supporting it with other troops is crucial, as only one Power P.E.K.K.A fits in each Army Camp.

Defensively, it can be countered by Push Traps, Double Cannons, and Crushers. Guard Posts can stall it effectively, especially if troops are behind Walls, buying time for defenses to eliminate it. The Power P.E.K.K.A's Overcharge ability and massive health make it a formidable force, contributing to its status as an S Tier Builder Base troop.

Clash of Clans Clan Capital Troops Tier List

This is a type of units made specifically for yet another dedicated game mode called Clan Capital, which is a cooperative game mode where Clan members work together to attack and defend the Clan Capital. This mode emphasizes teamwork and strategic planning, with unique troops and spells distinct from those used in the Home Village and Builder Base.

Tier Clan Capital Troops
S Tier Rocket Balloons, Sneaky Archers
A Tier Hog Raiders, Raid Cart, Flying Fortress, Super Wizard, Battle Ram, Super Miner
B Tier Super Dragon, Super PEKKA, Minion Horde, Super Barbarian, Super Giant
C Tier Mountain Golem, Inferno Dragon, Mega Sparky
D Tier Skeleton Barrels

There are a lot of units in this game, but we can only highlight a few of them. Perhaps the meta will shift by adding new S Tier-worthy troops.

S Tier Clan Capital Troops Explained

We decided that two troops are good enough for S Tier in Clan Capital wars:

  • Rocket Balloons
  • Sneaky Archers

Rocket Balloons are considered S Tier Clan Capital Troops in Clash of Clans due to their high damage output and strategic versatility. Unlocked automatically after the Balloon Lagoon district is available, Rocket Balloons are defense-targeting air units with rockets that significantly boost their speed for the first four seconds after deployment. This speed boost allows them to quickly engage and destroy frontline defenses, making them extremely effective in the initial phase of an attack.

While the Clash of Clans best troops for defense are Ice Golems and Baby Dragons, Sneaky Archer troops prioritize defensive structures and can bypass other buildings and enemy troops while defenses remain, ensuring they focus on the most critical targets first. Their ability to deploy in pairs makes them highly efficient at sniping individual defenses, and deploying them in larger numbers can lead to the rapid dismantling of enemy fortifications. BLOG20

Despite their fragility and vulnerability to splash-targeting defenses, Rocket Balloons' high damage and speed make them invaluable for taking out key defensive structures. Their strategic deployment, often in conjunction with tank units like the Flying Fortress or spells like Healing and Rage, maximizes their effectiveness and mitigates their weaknesses. Their unique ability to cross water and trigger traps also adds to their tactical flexibility, reinforcing their status as S Tier troops in the Clan Capital.

Sneaky Archers are highly valued in Clan Capital for their stealth and efficiency. Unlocked after the Barbarian Camp district, they remain invisible to defenses for the first five seconds, allowing them to target and damage key structures without being attacked initially. Deployed in squads of five, they deliver significant damage but have low hitpoints, needing support from tank units like Super Giants to protect them once visible.

Their initial invisibility is ideal for quickly eliminating defenses, and they can trigger hidden defenses like the Hidden Mega Tesla. However, they are vulnerable to splash damage from defenses like Multi Mortars and Super Wizard Towers, and traps can easily wipe them out if not checked for. Despite these vulnerabilities, their high damage output and stealth make them essential for effective offensive strategies in the Clan Capital.

Conclusion

There are a lot of troops in Clash of Clans, and each category of units has its uses. Even though there are over 90 troops in total, not counting heroes, pets, and limited-time troops, it’s really difficult to know which troops are worthy of your time and resource investment.

With this tier list, you hopefully have a better understanding of which units are good and which aren’t. As we’ve said before, a tier list in a game like this is something that will be regularly updated, so don’t forget to come back from time to time to see how the meta evolves!
