What is The Hive of Gorgons in New World?

The Hive of Gorgons is a 10-player raid introduced in New World as part of the Season of Opportunity update. After defeating Medusa in the New Olympus zone, players face a new challenge as the Gorgons raise an army of the Hercyne, a mythical force threatening Aeternum. To counter this threat, players must assemble a group of skilled fighters to enter the Hive, solving complex puzzles and engaging in intense boss battles throughout the raid. Now, let’s talk about where is the Hive of Gorgons and what you’ll find inside.

The Hive of Gorgons Location

To find the Hive of Gorgons location, head to the southern area of Cutlass Keys. This region is characterized by its lush environment, featuring a blend of forests and coastal scenery. The raid entrance itself is situated above the Barnacles and Black Powder Expedition, a notable landmark in the area.

To access the raid, players can either navigate to the physical entrance, marked on The Hive of Gorgons location map, or use the game’s activities feature. If approaching from the map, make your way toward the southern section of Cutlass Keys, keeping an eye out for the raid's distinct entrance marker. This area is generally populated with hostile Earth-type enemies, so it's crucial to prepare accordingly.

Knowing how to get to The Hive of Gorgons is only the beginning. When preparing for the raid, players should equip themselves with infused Angry Earth coatings and Ward potions, as the enemies within the raid will primarily consist of Angry Earth types. Understanding the damage types is crucial for effective combat. As you enter the raid, it's advisable to stockpile on combat trophies, honing stones, and the appropriate stat food to maximize your effectiveness.

The Hive of Gorgons Bosses List

The raid is divided into several sections, each featuring distinct mechanics and enemy types that require players to adapt their strategies. You must navigate through a series of environments that present both combat and puzzle elements, ensuring that every encounter feels unique.

Basically, there are 3 sections of the raid, each of which culminates in a boss fight. Here’s the list of The Hive of Gorgons bosses:

  1. Echidna - Serves as the first boss of the Hive of Gorgon raid. Players will encounter a blend of mechanics that test their coordination and strategy. This boss features a variety of attack patterns, requiring players to manage their positioning and timing to avoid heavy damage. Achidna’s drops include the Aoth Conductors, a medium armor piece with unique perks like Magify and Magician's Boon, enhancing elemental damage for those equipped in medium weight.
  2. Typhon -The second boss, Typhon, ramps up the challenge with more complex mechanics. Players must navigate through a series of environmental hazards while managing adds (additional enemies) that spawn during the fight. Defeating Typhon rewards players with the Trisna artifact Hammer and the Gorgon armor set, which offers random perks and up to a gear score of 725. BLOG20
  3. Broodmother Medusa - As the final boss, Brood Mother Medusa combines the mechanics of the previous encounters and introduces new challenges. This fight requires players to adapt quickly, utilizing their knowledge from earlier battles to succeed. The Brood Mother drops the legendary Hoplight items, including armor and jewelry, each featuring multiple perks and opportunities for customization, such as gym sockets and a variety of random perks.

The Hive of Gorgons Armor Tier Set

  1. Gorgon’s Armor Set – drops from Typhon and includes all armor pieces for all 3 weight categories. It also comes with random perks. BLOG20
  2. Hoptile Armor Set – also drops from Typhon and includes all armor pieces for all 3 weight categories.

Besides all this, you can also get the Azoth Conductors. This is a Tier V Artifact legs slot item that drops from the Echidna boss in the Hive of Gorgon raid. These medium armor leggings offer strong defense with 249.9 Elemental and Physical Armor Ratings, alongside the Magnify attribute boost of +32, which can be selected. The piece is especially powerful for players in medium equip weight due to the Magician's Boon perk, which increases Elemental damage by 15%.

Other key features include an empty socket for adding a gem, the Refreshing perk that reduces cooldowns by 4%, and a Health bonus that increases maximum health by 2.4% of the base value. For players with a gear score between 600-625 or 675-725, there’s also a chance for a random perk. The item is bound on pickup, weighs 3.5 units, has 750 durability, and provides 3 coins if salvaged.

The Hive of Gorgons Bosses Guide - New World Aeternum

It’s time to finally present the The Hive of Gorgons tactics for each boss encounter. Remember, there are only 3 of them, but each is not to be underestimated. Coordination and execution are above all else. It’s okay if you wipe on your first try. This content is the pinnacle of PvE activities in the game, so this is going to be quite a challenge, even for seasoned players. Still, with this guide, you’ll have a much higher chance of succeeding. So, without further ado, let’s dive into it.

Echidna Boss Guide

Echidna is a massive four-legged beast and the first of three The Hive of Gorgons bosses. Right at the start, as it drops on the arena, it’s going to perform an attack that will spawn massive stone pillars. It would be great if some of your raid party could manage to end up on top of those pillars and use ranged attacks.

Your goal is to stun the boss by depleting its stamina gauge, which you will see under the boss’ health bar. Once Echidna is knocked out, everyone should get into melee range and do as much burst damage as possible. The boss will stay down only for a handful of seconds, so you better be quick about it.

One of the other attacks that Echidna does is shoot out these massive quills called Obsidian Crystals. Make sure to break them all down before damaging the boss. If you don’t, they’re going to explode, dealing massive AoE damage, and no one is going to escape that, which will result in lots of deaths.

By the time you knock out the boss for the second time, it should already be at half-health. At this point, the boss will enter the second stage, where it will jump around the arena, dealing more AoE damage as it lands on the ground. Make sure to jump to avoid the damage when it lands. So, let’s summarise:

  • Echidna’s Entrance: The boss spawns and immediately performs an attack that creates massive stone pillars. Try to position some raid members on top of the pillars for ranged attacks.
  • Stamina Gauge Strategy: Focus on depleting Echidna's stamina gauge (visible under its health bar) to stun it. Once stunned, the whole raid should switch to melee and perform burst damage quickly, as the stun duration is short.
  • Obsidian Crystals: Echidna will shoot massive quills called Obsidian Crystals. Break these down before attacking the boss, or they will explode and deal lethal AoE damage to the entire raid.
  • Second Stage: After the second stun, Echidna will reach half-health and enter the second stage. It will jump around the arena, creating more AoE damage on impact. Time your jumps to avoid the damage when Echidna lands.

Typhon Boss Guide

The second boss, Typhon, is smaller in size but much more nimble. You have to watch out for it’s telegraphed attacks. One of them deals damage in a line in front of the boss, and the other is a spinning attack that deals damage around the boss. Make sure to dodge or block those.

Typhon is giong to summon a few beasts in its aid:

  1. Hercyne Wolf (Regenerating Flesh) – slowly restores the boss’ health
  2. Hercyne Corvid (Empowering Flesh) – buffs the boss’ attacks.

Kill them as fast as you can.

Moving one with the Hive of Gorgons strategy for Typhon, at about 75% of health, Typhon is going to run to the next part of the arena that was blocked off by massive vines. This next stage is a lot like the first one in the sense that it also has four pillars that the boss sometimes crashes into and stuns. What’s new, though, is that sometimes, one side of the arena spawns a massive line of thorns, making it dangerous to stand in. On top of that, Tyhpon will periodically spawn Thorn Maidens that can trap players inside, dealing AoE damage if not destroyed on time. During this stage, the boss will summon Hercyne Wolf, whom you already know, and the Hercyne Spider adds, who don’t buff the boss but do chase after players.

Here’s how you make Typhon crash into a pillar – a random player gets marked, which means that after a short delay, the player will get stunned, and the boss will charge at them, killing them. If the marked player stands behind a pillar, Tython will charge right into it, breaking the pillar and stunning itself. BLOG20

Before the third stage, Typhon will summon another Hercyne Wolf, a couple of Corvids, and a bunch of Spiders.

During the last stage, you’ll only have 2 of these pillars to hide behind when marked. During this stage, Typhon will be much more aggressive, marking several raid members at the same time and summoning more minions. So, for this last 25-30% of Typhon’s health, everyone must be extremely careful and mindful of their surroundings. You must not miss any windows of opportunity to deal damage because otherwise, the density of attacks and adds is going to eventually overwhelm your party and you will wipe. In short:

  1. First Stage: Typhon uses two key attacks—a frontal line strike and a spinning AoE. These should be dodged or blocked. Throughout the fight, the boss summons two types of adds: a healing wolf and a damage-boosting corvid. Focus on eliminating them quickly.
  2. Second Stage: When Typhon reaches 75% health, it moves to a new arena section. Here, players can stun the boss by leading its charge into pillars. Be wary of the thorns that appear, along with adds like Thorn Maidens, which can trap players.
  3. Final Stage: In the last phase, Typhon becomes more aggressive, marks multiple players, and has fewer pillars to crash into. Timely coordination and focus on damage are crucial to avoid being overwhelmed by its attacks and summons.

Broodmother Medusa Boss Guide

Medusa is a leech-like creature with a yellow-glowing belly. When it moves, it leaves a trail of goo that damages players. Furthermore, it spews Hercyne eggs that need to be destroyed. It can also plant thorns, much like Typhon did before.

The vines above the arena will sometimes spawn Vicious Blooms that will use ranged attacks on players. These also need to be killed.

Some players may be put to sleep because of a certain Medusa attack. If that happens, there are several fountains placed around the arena with Cleansing Water, other players need to use it on the sleeping player. If a Hercyne Egg is not destroyed on time, it will hatch a Hercyne Gorilla or a Hercyne Boar, both very aggressive elite adds. Furthermore, sometimes, Medusa blocks the fountains using Obstructing Veins, which can be destroyed to restore the fountain.

The boss doesn’t have any outlined stages. It seems to just throw everything at once at your party. What makes this fight really difficult is that you constantly have to shift your attention to things other than the boss itself. There are lots of adds, and lots of AoE damage; Medusa periodically charges across the arena, basically killing everyone in its path. On top of that, some players will get mesmerized and stunned, which means others will need to rescue them using the Fountains. Then there’s a nasty tail attack that Medusa does. This fight is just a big mess overall, so everyone needs to have their head in the game at all time!

Conclusion

The Hive of Gorgons is an awesome new PvE activity that really does challenge a group of 10 players in their best gear. It really is much more challenging than any other expedition. It’s got pretty challenging boss encounters, too. They’re not extremely mechanic-heavy per se, but they do challenge all players by throwing an overwhelming amount of attacks at the group.

Thankfully, the rewards for doing this raid are well worth it. The developers made sure to make this raid super-important for endgame progression, as it is currently the only source of the new max gear score.

With our guide, you should now be able to complete a raid or at least know what to do in each encounter. Stay tuned for more guides on New World, right here!
