How The System of Weapon Camos Works In Black Ops 6
There are few important things to know about the camo system and the way it works in CoD BO6. Drawing inspiration from classic Headshot-based camo challenges and integrating features from more modern systems, the camo progression now feels smoother and more meaningful for each weapon. The revamped system eliminates barriers that interrupted camo progression in previous games, allowing players to unlock camos at their own pace without being restricted by weapon leveling.
The Black Ops 6 camo system features three main types of camos: Military Camos, Special Camos, and Mastery Camos. Just like before, you unlock each camo category after the other. In other words, in order to unlock Mastery Camos for your favorite gun, you’ll have to first unlock all Military Camos, then all Special Camos, and then finally, you’ll be able to work on any given CoD Black Ops 6 mastery camo.
The weapon camo system in Modern Warfare 3 adhered to a progression similar to that of Modern Warfare 2, where players first unlocked all base camos for a weapon before gaining access to mastery camos. Each weapon featured four base camos and four mastery camos. Additional camos were awarded through weekly challenges, short-duration events, and DMZ-specific tasks. Mastery camos in MW3 were separated between multiplayer and Zombies modes, meaning players unlocked them in their respective modes but could use them across both once earned.
The unlocking process involved completing specific challenges tied to each camo. For example, Gold Camos required players to complete all base camo challenges, while higher-tier camos like Polyatomic or Orion required challenges such as longshots or headshots for multiple weapons. In Zombies mode, camos were unlocked by fulfilling specific objectives like zombie kills or Pack-a-Punch challenges, following a similar tiered progression system. BLOG20
So, in some sense, the BO6’s system kept some qualities and ideas about unlocking camos that could be traced back to the very first iteration of said system. However, the clear trend for simplifying and unifying challenges for better transparency is something that sets the weapon camos system in Black Ops 6 apart from its predecessors.
1. Military Camos
Your camo journey begins with Military Camos, which are earned by completing progressively challenging milestones. These milestones vary by game mode:
- Multiplayer: Headshots with the weapon.
- Zombies: Critical kills (headshots).
- WZ: Weapon eliminations.
There are nine Military Camos for each weapon, and they must be unlocked one by one in a set order. Each camo is tied to a particular milestone, starting with simple challenges and escalating as you progress through the nine available camos. For example, the first Military Camo might require only five headshots, while the final one demands 100 headshots. These must be unlocked individually for each weapon, and once earned, the camo is available for that weapon in all game modes. And remember, the camos are no longer tied to weapon level, which means that as soon as you unlock a weapon, you’ll be able to start doing all camo challenges Black Ops 6 to unlock them.
2. Special Camos
After completing all 9 Military Camos for a weapon, you gain access to the Special Camos. Each weapon has 2 unique Special Camos per mode (Multiplayer, Zombies, WZ). These camos can be unlocked in any order, as opposed to the sequential progression of Military Camos. Special Camos are tied to challenges that reflect the strengths or playstyle of the specific weapon you are using. Once unlocked, these camos are pervasive — meaning they can be equipped on any weapon, provided that weapon has completed the Military Camos and unlocked the Special Camo category in at least one mode.
3. Mastery Camos
The final step in the camo journey is unlocking all mastery camos Black Ops 6. To access these, you need to have completed all Military and Special Camos for a weapon. Each game mode has four tiers of Mastery Camos:
- Multiplayer: Gold, Diamond, Dark Spine, Dark Matter.
- Zombies: Mystic Gold, Opal, Afterlife, Nebula.
- WZ: Gold Tiger, King’s Ransom, Catalyst, Abyss. BLOG20
Unlocking Mastery Camos involves progressively more difficult challenges. For instance, earning Gold Camo for a weapon requires completing all Military and Special Camos for that weapon. To unlock the next tier, such as Diamond, you must earn Gold Camo on a certain number of weapons within a specific weapon class. This progression continues with each tier requiring Black Ops 6 camo unlock across more weapon classes until you reach the final, most prestigious camos like Dark Matter, Nebula, or Abyss.
Let’s take a look at the full list of all weapon camo challenges Black Ops 6:
Category | Number of Camos | Names/Types |
Military Camos (MP, Zombies, WZ) | 9 per weapon | Granite, Woodland, Savanna, Splinter, Moss, Shade, Digital, Tide, Red Tiger |
Special Camos (MP, Zombies, WZ) | 2 per weapon | Varies by weapon |
Mastery Camos (Multiplayer) | 4 (per mode) | Gold, Diamond, Dark Spine (Animated), Dark Matter (Animated, Dynamic) |
Mastery Camos (Zombies) | 4 (per mode) | Mystic Gold, Opal, Afterlife (Animated), Nebula (Animated, Dynamic) |
Mastery Camos (WZ) | 4 (per mode) | Gold Tiger, King’s Ransom (Animated), Catalyst (Animated), Abyss (Animated, Dynamic) |
Let’s count the total amount of camos in BO6:
- Camos per Weapon:
- Military Camos: 27 total (9 per mode × 3 modes)
- Special Camos: 6 total (2 per mode × 3 modes)
- Mastery Camos: 12 total (4 per mode × 3 modes)
- Total camos per weapon = 27 (Military) + 6 (Special) + 12 (Mastery) = 45 camos.
- Total Number of Weapons: Developers have confirmed 33 weapons at launch.
- Overall Total Camos: Total camos = Total camos per weapon × Total number of weapons
- Total camos = 45 camos per weapon × 33 weapons = 1,485 camos.
So, there will be a total of 1,485 camos in Black Ops 6 at launch. And that’s not including the weapons from MW2 and MW3 that will remain to be available in WZ.
Camo Challenges Overview
This is the part of the guide about all Black Ops 6 camo challenges that will have to be updated. As of writing this, we know the challenges of unlocking the Military camos category. Each of the 9 Military camos requires you to do a number of headshots, regardless of the weapon type you’re using. That being said, here are the Military camo challenges:
Camo Name | Multiplayer (Headshots) | Zombies (Critical Kills) | WZ (Eliminations) |
Granite | 5 | 5 | 5 |
Woodland | 10 | 10 | 10 |
Savanna | 15 | 15 | 15 |
Splinter | 20 | 20 | 20 |
Moss | 30 | 30 | 30 |
Shade | 40 | 40 | 40 |
Digital | 50 | 50 | 50 |
Tide | 75 | 75 | 75 |
Red Tiger | 100 | 100 | 100 |
Note: Military Camos must be unlocked individually per weapon. In other words, you’ll have to do the same challenges for each of the weapons in the same category.
Next, we have the Special camo category. We’ll update you on this one as soon as we have more information.
Camo Name | Pre-Unlock Challenge |
Muddled | Earned after completing all nine Military Camos for the weapon. |
Machina | Earned after completing all nine Military Camos for the weapon. |
Here’s an example of a Special camo challenge. To unlock the Muddled & Machina special camo on XM4 you’ll need to:
- Get 30 kills shortly after sprinting with XM-4 in Multiplayer.
- Get a kill without taking any damage 30 times with the XM4
Once again, the requirements will likely be different for each of the three main game modes.
For the Zombies mode, you have Liquify & Mainframe. They also have their own special challenges. Here's an example for the XM4:
- Get 300 Eliminations with Napalm Burst equipped to the XM4
- Get 30 Vermin Eliminations with XM4
Finally, the Mastery Camos are unlocked one after the other, which you will unlock one after the other starting from Gold, Mystic Gold or Gold Tiger (depending on the game mode) and working your way up to the next Mastery Camo. Check out this Black Ops 6 camo list of challenges:
Camo Name | Pre-Unlock Challenge |
Gold (Multiplayer) | Earn all 9 Military Camos through headshots. |
Mystic Gold (Zombies) | Earn all 9 Military Camos through critical kills. |
Gold Tiger (WZ) | Earn all 9 Military Camos through eliminations. |

Nebula (Zombies) | Earn Afterlife on 5 weapons. |
Abyss (WZ) | Earn Catalyst on 5 weapons. |
Besides unlocking the previous camos, each mastery camo will have a unique challenge tied to it, which we will add as soon as we know what these challenges are. So, this should give you a good idea about how to unlock camos in Black Ops 6 for each of the categories. BLOG20
Conclusion
To sum the Black Ops 6 camo guide up, the camo progression system got rid of the personalized challenges in the previous CoD installment and made a step towards a more unified approach, at least when it comes to the first tier of camos called Military. The unique challenges are still there, but they’re now exclusive to Special and Mastery camos. But just because each weapon no longer has its own unique set of challenges doesn’t mean that unlocking camos has become easier or faster.
The grind to unlock all camos hasn’t changed in the slightest. Players are still required to unlock camos per individual weapon, which is a lot of work, considering there are 33 weapons at launch and 45 unique camos across 3 different game modes - multiplayer, zombies, and WZ.
At the end of the day, whether or not you like the changes in this year’s CoD’s camo system, it’s what we’re stuck with for the foreseeable future. All that’s left for us to do is to jump into the game and start working on unlocking those mastery camos!
