Ascendant shard is an exotic material used by guardians for armor masterworking (Masterworking a single legendary armor piece will require you to spend one ascendant shard. However, masterworking a single exotic armor piece will cost you three ascendant shards.) You can obtain the shards by completing the Nightfalls on Master and Grandmaster difficulties.
These come with their own set of problems, such as not having the auto searching system, requiring a very high light level as well as powerful exotic weapons such as the Divinity, the Xenophage, or The Eyes of Tomorrow.
